The DIO A beautiful sunset. The face of a loved one. A fine piece of art. Our sight makes it possible for us to appreciate all of these and so much more. But very poor vision, or none at all, robs us of those pleasures and the simple scenes so many of us take for granted every day. In Grosse Pointe Park, one organization has been helping the visually impaired and their families since 1972 – the Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology. Now part of Henry Ford Health, the DIO assists and educates the visually impaired to keep their independence and live satisfying lives in a sighted world. In addition, the DIO sponsors international meetings each year that bring together the world’s leading vision-related scientists to discuss advances in the field, including the most current findings on visual neuro-prosthetic devices to be placed in the eye or brain to restore sight to some of those who are blind. On a day-to-day level, the DIO offers support groups for those with little or no eyesight. Helped by the Friends of Vision, the DIO manages five separate support groups that meet monthly or twice a month at various locations in the metro area to discuss the challenges of living with visual impairment. Among the support group’s longtime members are Nino and Marie Pacini of Grosse Pointe Woods, who gradually lost their vision over many years. The couple is often seen

walking on Mack Avenue with their white canes, running errands. Marie says the DIO’s support groups have been a big help. “You’re meeting with people in the same situation as you. It can feel kind of lonely but in a room full of other people like you, you can share ideas and laugh about things.” For Nino, the support groups enable him to help others. “It gives me an avenue to give back to others going through vision loss,” he says. Each June, the couple dons white gloves to judge by touch the design of a group of classic cars at the DIO’s annual EyesOn Design car show. Often, they choose the same winning car as the sighted judges. Besides the institute’s support groups, the resource center (named for Martha Gorey, a longtime benefactor) houses a wide variety of low-vision aids, from closed-circuit magnifying machines and hand-held magnifiers to large print calendars, talking watches, clocks, and other resources. The DIO is closely affiliated with the ophthalmic technician training at Henry Ford College in Dearborn and the Henry Ford Health Department of Ophthalmology’s resident training program. Like all non-profits, the DIO relies on volunteers to help in many areas. In addition to the Friends of Vision, DIO has volunteer CONTINUED >

EyesOn Design leadership and vehicle selection committees that meet year-round helping staff plan and implement the EyesOn Design events. To aid its programs, the DIO recently received a generous $2 million bequest from the foundation of the late Art Van Elslander. “The money will fund a permanent position for studies in eye research,” notes Dr. Philip Hessburg, the DIO’s medical director, who started the institute 50 years ago. “Over these past decades, we are tremendously proud of the achievements that have been made for the blind and visually impaired. Our important and essential work continues.”

Janie Jones Shares How to Make Your Culinary Creations Shine

With special occasions and holidays around the corner, the time for your best efforts in the kitchen are nearly here. Considering the work you put in to impress your guests, you may also be looking to show off your culinary creations in photographs. Janie Jones, a photographer who decided to expand her portrait photography business at the start of the pandemic in 2020, found the lockdown provided the time and opportunity to get creative and try different facets to her photography. With ideas rolling around in her head, she began doing, creating, and trying new things. Through combining the desire to create and the love of styling, she discovered a talent for pairing her photography skills with food. She was soon booked with restaurants and other businesses, pivoting her business to primarily styling and food photography. Janie found her passion and longs for everyone to do what brings them as much joy as she has found. Her favorite thing to photograph, she says, is “a great flat lay with beautiful linens, dinnerware, herbs, spices and whatever else is in the dish. It just makes me happy!” It can make you happy too. At home, you can use Janie’s best ideas to elevate your own food photography throughout the season or anytime at all. Here’s what she suggests: 1. Start with the finished dish. Note the colors you find. 2. Consider the ingredients. Pull some aside to highlight the colors in the dish, such as fresh herbs, fruit, or sauces. 3. Find linens, cutlery, or other props to accentuate the food. 4. Less is more. Don’t "over-busy" the scene. 5. Natural light is best. Pull your table up in front of the window if you need to get good lighting. 6. Make sure the background or backdrop is neutral in color so you can really see the details of the food. and energized. My vision when entering this industry was to create a warm inviting space that meets all the client’s needs in one beautiful and relaxing setting. WHAT MAKES ZEALAND SPA SALON UNIQUE? What makes Zealand Spa Salon so unique is the variety of services we offer, including hair, makeup, waxing, facials, massage, nails, and the like. I’ve been working for the past 18 months to widen our service menu, adding dermaplaning and microneedling along with the intent to offer other services such as Botox, fillers, weight loss, vitamin injections, and more as we enter 2023. We aspire to fulfill all the needs of our clients while exceeding their expectations. We host monthly events, which range from makeup demonstrations to beauty bashes and blow-drying lessons. We are working on our 2023 event schedule which will venture outside of beauty by offering wellness events for everyone to enjoy. Zealand is also active in our community by donating to Hospitality House, Haven Oakland, and Wigs 4 Kids Michigan. Wigs 4 Kids is special to me, as I have a good friend that lost his young daughter to cancer. He is now on the board of Wigs 4 Kids and it brings me great joy to help such a wonderful organization. TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR TEAM. WHAT IS GREAT ABOUT THEM? Our client-centered staff at Zealand Spa Salon has a wide range of specialties to offer. Whether it’s a short fashion haircut, balayage, special event styling, highlights, hair donation, fashion colors, or anything in between, we have a stylist that is perfect for your unique vision. Our team is like family—we work very well together and have a bond that stretches far beyond our walls. Whether it be camping or vacationing together, dinners, boat rides, or just a night out, we genuinely enjoy each other’s company. I acquired Zealand Spa Salon in March of 2021. In that time have been steadily making improvements

and progress to the business. Personally, I love the feeling I get after having my hair styled, nails manicured, or a facial. My goal is to enhance that feeling for our clientele during their experience. Our skilled and talented staff help our clients build their confidence by showing them the best version of themselves. I love nothing more than interacting with our clients while operating the salon daily. Listening to what’s new in their lives, with families, vacations, coupled with what the current visit has them excited about makes my day complete. WHAT ABOUT OUTSIDE THE SALON? CAN YOU SHARE A BIT ABOUT YOUR FAMILY AND INTERESTS? I’m beyond lucky to have two wonderful children. Emma (23) is an ICU RN, who helps at the salon during our medical spa events. As we move into 2023, she’ll be at Zealand more to assist with the medical services we’ll be offering. Ethan (20 this month!) is furthering his education while working for Valvoline. I’ve tried to get Ethan to work at the salon, but it’s not his idea of fun! Both children graduated from Walled Lake Central High School. When not at Zealand, I love to travel, cook, bake, read, hike, and practice yoga. I especially love going on yoga retreats—my most recent retreat was in September at Joshua Tree National Park and it was absolutely AMAZING! NOVEMBER ALWAYS BRINGS THOUGHTS OF THANKFULNESS. WHAT ARE YOU THANKFUL FOR? I’m most thankful for Zealand and the new friends I’ve made along this journey. The wonderful people I have met thus far make it easy to go to work each day and I cannot wait to see what the future brings. I’m also thankful for the support of my family, friends, and team. This journey hasn’t been easy, and I wouldn’t be where I am today without the love and care of them all. I am also grateful for my wonderful neighbors—the teams at Lulu’s, Princess Grill, Commerce Nutrition, and Biggby not only take care of us with great food and drinks but have been wonderful to work with.

Insider Tips for Hosting: • Build a menu around the season. “In November, people crave turkey, sage stuffing and cranberry sauce,” Chef Kyle says. “Autumn dinners mean bigger-course meals with varied proteins, like turkey, duck and sirloin, hearty starches, and good fall produce, especially root vegetables such as butternut squash and pumpkin.” • Always greet guests with a beverage and appetizers. “Offer champagne for wine-lovers or a sparkling drink or signature cocktail. It’s all about serving guests to the highest caliber,” Kyle says. • Draw inspiration from the season’s changing colors, cooler temps and lower humidity to move back outdoors. “Think flannel blankets, wooden tables, fire pits, open grills, string lights and candles to create a really cool environment you haven’t been able to do all summer.”
