GUMMY SMILE? CROWN LENGTHENING IS A VERY COMMON PROCEDURE TO COSMETICALLY TREAT A ‘GUMMY’ SMILE. DATA SHOWS THAT THE SMILE IS OFTEN THE FIRST THING PEOPLE NOTICE ABOUT ANOTHER PERSON.

SOME MAY THINK THAT THEIR TEETH APPEAR SHORT, BUT THEY ARE ACTUALLY THE PROPER SIZE!

Having a good smile can not only make someone look more attractive but can also have an impact on many other aspects of a person’s life, including their personal and professional relationships.

They only appear short or tiny because they are covered with excessive gum tissue. This can be fixed by removing the excess tissue to expose more of the tooth structure. The tissue can also be reshaped to allow for a more even gum line.

CROWN LENGTHENING IS ALSO BENEFICIAL TO PATIENT HEALTH. Gums that extend too far over a natural tooth can be more difficult to clean. A lengthened crown is more hygienic and easier to clean, reducing the chances of gum disease later on.

ALL OF THESES BENEFITS CAN BE ACHIEVED WITH THE CROWN LENGTHENING PROCEDURE!

Crown lengthening is performed in a periodontist’s office under local anesthetic. During the procedure, the surgeon gently removes gum tissues and bone to expose the underlying tooth.

IT’S YOUR MOUTH...YOUR HEALTH.

UPCOMING HOLIDAY PARTIES MIGHT CALL FOR AN UPDO; LUCKILY, A LOCAL SALON SUITE OWNER PROVIDES STEPS TO TRYING ONE YOURSELF. ARTICLE DANIELLE ALEXANDER | PHOTOGRAPHY AMY GILLESPIE

LADIES, ARE YOU HEADING TO A HOLIDAY PARTY THIS YEAR? McKenzie Oha, owner of Salon and Co. in West Bloomfield, encourages you to consider an updo. “I think a simple updo is something that will add a little something special,” she said. “Since there were no holiday parties last year, I think it’s important to embrace getting dressed up, putting your favorite new outfit on and doing your hair! You should cherish the time you spend with your loved ones and take those photos!” If you’re interested in trying an updo yourself, Chelsey Langerman, who owns a salon suite inside of Salon and Co., has provided tips for a simple yet beautiful low bun on the next page; however, if you’re in the mood to get pampered, Langerman and the other stylists at Salon and Co. are extremely experienced in updos and makeup— accommodating a combined total of over 500 weddings (and counting) this year! 1. NOTE: If you cover your work space with paper, make sure not to set the slime down onto the paper. It may stick and tear the paper! Keep it in the bowl or in your hands at all times. 2. Begin by pouring your school glue into a large mixing bowl. 3. Add in some liquid starch slowly, stirring with your fingers as you go. 4. Feel the slime begin to form! If it is still really sticky, add in a little more liquid starch. 5. The more you play with your silly putty, the less sticky it becomes. 6. To add color, choose which color(s) you would like your slime to be. Add in a little paint, and mix thoroughly. If you want to create both red and green slime, divide your slime in half, then mix some of each color separately! 7. Try blowing a bubble in your slime by placing the straw in your folded up silly putty, then exhaling into your straw. 8. If you wish, add in your mix-ins to create the textured slime of your dreams. 9. When it’s time to put the slime away, seal it in a plastic bag. GIVING AWAY AFTER A SUCCESSFUL CAMPAIGN LAST YEAR, LIFESTYLE PUBLICATIONS IS GIVING $300,000 TO RECIPIENTS IN NEED THIS CHRISTMAS SEASON AND BEYOND... AND WE NEED YOUR HELP!

ABOUT SIX YEARS AGO ANNA SAROL, THE DAUGHTER OF A SINGLE MOTHER, WAS PARALYZED IN A GYMNASTICS ACCIDENT WHEN SHE WAS A FRESHMAN IN HIGH SCHOOL, BUT UNTIL LAST YEAR SHE DID NOT HAVE A STAIRLIFT IN HER HOME. The stairlift was made possible when Lifestyle Publications gave her family $10,000. “I watched my community come together to help me get this equipment to my house, and words can’t explain how appreciative my

family and I are,” Anna says. The money for Anna’s stairlift was part of a giveaway campaign from the company during the 2020 Christmas season that benefited more than 80 recipients across the country with a final distribution of $250,000 throughout the year. When the company opened nominations, they were flooded with submissions. Community leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you nominated people that were in need of assistance. As the eyes and ears of the community, these readers were able to help identify people who might have

otherwise gone unnoticed or unrecognized. One such nominee was Kathy*, an aunt who is raising her three young relatives. The children came from an abusive situation, and Kathy, a single guardian, works tirelessly to provide for them. Nevertheless, the family was already living in poverty despite her working seven days a week when Kathy lost her job during the pandemic. She resorted to selling tamales to help pay the rent. When a case manager with a Big Brothers Big Sisters foster youth mentoring program heard about Lifestyle’s campaign and call for nominations, she quickly thought of Kathy. “When I shared the news that Kathy was selected and would be receiving $3,000, she cried, screamed, and was in disbelief,” the case manager said. “She immediately wanted to give back to me and the donor by providing endless tamales. This funding allowed the children to have a small Christmas tree for the first time ever. Kathy was able to pay her rent and utilities for three months, and the children were able to experience a holiday season in peace without financial stressors.” In yet another case, Emily* who worked as a janitor at a school, was a recipient and was struggling to afford simply buying groceries for her children. Before the ongoing difficulties of the pandemic even started, a tornado destroyed the school she worked at just a couple weeks before the initial shutdown in March 2020 which resulted in a loss of income for her. Emily was incredibly surprised and grateful to receive assistance from the giveaway. *Names changed for privacy

Looking for a good book recommendation, I touched base with West Bloomfield Township Public Library’s staff, who shared which ones they’d recommend for all ages this month. For the littles, Coordinator of Youth Services Jill Bickford suggested A Thousand White Butterflies by Jessica BetancourtPerez and Karen Lynn Williams: “This picture book tells the touching and optimistic story of a young immigrant’s first days in a new country. Beautiful illustrations add to the joy and simplicity of this heartfelt story.” Young Adult Librarian Steve Ketcham
