Additionally, Steven Durant of West Bloomfield (pictured on the cover with his girlfriend and brand new son) said he is choosing joy and gratitude despite having lost his daughter following a car accident in 2016 and having to work through his own health challenges ever since (page 16). As a working mom of two, I know that I am always grateful for quick, healthy recipes. Luckily, in this issue, we also feature our good friend Karen Akouri of drench, who shares her Southwest Salad recipe (page 28) that incorporates her brand new dressing: Southwest Vinaigrette. And since it always warms my heart to see the myriad ways in which others celebrate the holidays, we caught up with four local business owners who share what they’re “bringing to the table” this Thanksgiving, as well. Check out their answers on page 24. This month, we hope your home is filled with the aroma of freshly baked pies, the

GUMMY SMILE? CROWN LENGTHENING IS A VERY COMMON PROCEDURE TO COSMETICALLY TREAT A ‘GUMMY’ SMILE. DATA SHOWS THAT THE SMILE IS OFTEN THE FIRST THING PEOPLE NOTICE ABOUT ANOTHER PERSON.

SOME MAY THINK THAT THEIR TEETH APPEAR SHORT, BUT THEY ARE ACTUALLY THE PROPER SIZE!

CROWN LENGTHENING IS ALSO BENEFICIAL TO PATIENT HEALTH.

Having a good smile can not only make someone look more attractive but can also have an impact on many other aspects of a person’s life, including their personal and professional relationships.

They only appear short or tiny because they are covered with excessive gum tissue. This can be fixed by removing the excess tissue to expose more of the tooth structure. The tissue can also be reshaped to allow for a more even gum line.

Gums that extend too far over a natural tooth can be more difficult to clean. A lengthened crown is more hygienic and easier to clean, reducing the chances of gum disease later on.

ALL OF THESES BENEFITS CAN BE ACHIEVED WITH THE CROWN LENGTHENING PROCEDURE!

Crown lengthening is performed in a periodontist’s office under local anesthetic. During the procedure, the surgeon gently removes gum tissues and bone to expose the underlying tooth.

IT’S YOUR MOUTH...YOUR HEALTH.

Not only did Durant suffer serious physical ailments, but he lost his young daughter, Rosaria, who died after the accident. The Detroit native ended up retiring from his career as a supervisory examiner at the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) and moving back to Michigan (where his family was) to receive care at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. All while grieving the loss of his daughter, Durant has spent the last five years not only working through health challenges like learning to walk again, being put on a feeding tube and giving himself daily injections, but he also got divorced. Despite it all though, he says he’s choosing to be grateful— and he has his girlfriend (Ola

Since college, he has been in charge of the turkey, and since he and his wife (Tracie) bought their home, they have hosted Thanksgiving every year, always bringing smiles to family members through cooking. “I perfected my Thanksgiving turkey recipe years ago,” Dr. Fienman said. “I usually roast one and smoke one. The smoked turkey is a big hit.” Fienman’s Tips to an “Expertly-Prepared” Turkey: Don’t cook an extra large bird over 20 pounds as they end up dry and tasteless. Opt for two smaller birds (about 12 pounds) for a big crowd. I have perfected a citrus and herb recipe, heavy on the garlic. Use fruit wood, Cherry and Apple, to smoke the bird. Use a meat thermometer to know when you are done cooking.

J O H N C A LV I N John Calvin of Calvin Law Center, PLLC grew up in a very big family and was the ninth of 10 children. Clearly, Thanksgiving was always a very large undertaking in his house. A fond memory he has of this holiday during his childhood is his mom always making it a point of going around the table to ask what each child was thankful for that year. “That is something I bring to the table with my family,” he explained. “I love being able to impart to my own kids how important it is to remember the good things in our lives and to share them with others.”

LOOKING TO TRY A NEW SALAD RECIPE THIS MONTH? Karen Akouri, local resident and owner of drench (the clean and natural dressing line), shares ingredients and directions for drench’s version of a Southwest Salad. The recipe calls for drench’s Southwest Vinaigrette, which is made with both olive and avocado oil and is the latest addition to the drench dressing lineup. “It’s great on anything with avocados and makes a great marinade and finishing sauce for fajitas,” Akouri said. “We never use canola oil or soybean oil. All of our dressings are free of the most common allergens: gluten free, dairy free, nut free, egg free, fish free, refined sugar free and non GMO Project Verified.”
