Home, Community, & Texas Tradition

Home. Just four letters, yet it holds so much meaning. It is our sanctuary, our foundation, and the place where life unfolds. Home is where routines take hold, memories are layered over time, and comfort is found in both the familiar and the thoughtfully chosen. While home looks different for each of us, its meaning is universal.

As a proud Texan, home has always been more than an address. It’s a feeling rooted in tradition, community, and pride. It shows up in shared meals, outdoor gatherings, and the spaces where people come together. It’s reflected in how we care for our homes and how we show up for one another. That spirit comes alive every spring with Rodeo Austin, a celebration that honors Texas roots while reinvesting in the future through youth programs, education, and opportunity, reminding us that strong communities begin at home.

Willie Nelson said it best, “Once you’re in Texas, it’s like you’re home.” That sentiment rings true here in West Austin, where neighbors come together and giving back is simply part of everyday life. Supporting our youth and investing in the next generation matters deeply to me, and it is inspiring to see how many local organizations, builders, designers, and businesses are committed to that work.

In this Home & Design issue, you’ll find stories of the people and places influencing how we live, from the homes we create to the communities we nurture. Many of our readers tell us they keep West Austin City Lifestyle long after its cover date, treating it as part of their home. That is something we are incredibly proud of, and we remain committed to creating a publication that feels thoughtful, lasting, and worth returning to.

Thank you for welcoming us into your homes and into your lives. Here’s to celebrating West Austin living, inspired design, and the people who make it all feel like home.

Happy March,

March 2026

It’s All in the Details

Local experts committed to quality work and lasting results for your luxury home.

Designing and maintaining a home in West Austin takes intention, experience, and partners who value quality work done the right way. Homes throughout the area reflect careful decision-making, from the earliest construction choices to finishes and long-term upkeep. Materials are selected with purpose, craftsmanship is prioritized, and durability is never an afterthought. The result is a community built by homes designed to function well today while standing the test of time. With that in mind, we’ve taken a closer look at four local businesses that consistently reflect these standards.

Amazing Exteriors, Landers Flooring, and Bumble Roofing focus on essential elements that support both function and appearance. From exterior solutions designed to protect and improve efficiency, to flooring selections chosen for durability and design, to roofing systems built to withstand Texas weather, each brings a practical, detail-driven approach to their craft. Their work reflects an understanding of quality materials, skilled installation, and solutions tailored to each home. These foundational elements often determine how a home performs over time, not just how it looks on move-in day.

Olson & Daffendorf brings a custom homebuilding perspective shaped by thoughtful design, experienced planning, and an emphasis on livable spaces. Their projects reflect a balance between architectural vision and the realities of daily living, resulting in homes that feel both intentional and comfortable. Together, the businesses featured here share a commitment to craftsmanship and long-term value. Their collective work supports homes designed to be lived in, cared for, and enjoyed for years to come.

Rodeo-worthy flavor, no judges required.

Champion WAGYU BURGER

Rodeo Austin is here, and the buzz of BBQ cook-off competition has everyone talking about who will take home the title. You don’t need a smoker, a pit crew, or a judge’s scorecard to feel like a champion. Sometimes, the win is as simple as a perfectly cooked Wagyu burger, juicy, rich, and unapologetically bold. With premium cuts sourced locally, you can bring competition-level flavor straight to your own kitchen and grill like you mean it.

DIRECTIONS:

1. Remove Wagyu burger patties from the refrigerator and let them rest at room temperature for 15 to 20 minutes.

2. Preheat a grill or cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat until fully heated.

3. Season patties generously on both sides with kosher salt and freshly cracked black pepper just before cooking.

4. Place patties onto the grill or skillet and cook for 3 to 4 minutes on the first side without pressing down. Allow a deep golden-brown crust to form before flipping.

5. Flip patties once and continue cooking for an additional 3 to 4 minutes, adjusting time slightly based on preferred doneness. Wagyu benefits from medium-rare to medium to retain its buttery texture.

6. Add cheese during the final minute of cooking and loosely cover the pan or grill to encourage even melting.

7. While burgers finish cooking, butter brioche buns and toast cut-side down until lightly crisp and golden.

8. Assemble burgers by layering patties onto toasted buns and adding desired toppings and sauces.

9. Serve immediately while warm and juicy, letting the quality of the meat take center stage.

CColton Turnquist brings a rare combination of market expertise, athletic focus, and deep local knowledge to West Austin real estate. Originally from Austin, Colton competed nationally on the golf teams at both the University of Texas at Austin and Baylor University, later traveling professionally in golf competitions. Raised around the real estate industry by his parents, Michele and Steve Turnquist of Turnquist Partners Realtors, Inc., Colton learned early the value of client education and trust.

After joining Turnquist Partners in 2014 following his time with Douglas Elliman in New York City, Colton continues to apply the discipline and focus of a professional athlete to guide buyers and sellers in West Austin. He provides expert insight into what today’s buyers and sellers value most, from functional floor plans to timeless home features and the evolving role of livability.

WHAT ARE BUYERS AND SELLERS PRIORITIZING MOST RIGHT NOW IN WEST AUSTIN?

It’s a nuanced question because every buyer’s needs are different, shaped by lifestyle, family size, and long-term plans. That said, most buyers are ultimately looking for functional floor plans that make sense for how their families live day to day. Spaces that flow well, offer flexibility, and maximize usability tend to stand out regardless of personal taste. On the seller’s side, the focus is on making the home as move-in ready as possible. If a seller wants to achieve top dollar, the home generally needs to present a step above the competition currently on the market.

WHICH HOME FEATURES CONTINUE TO HOLD VALUE REGARDLESS OF MARKET SHIFTS?

Buyers are increasingly focusing on multiple and larger living rooms that give their families space to gather, relax, and spread out. Large, spacious kitchens continue to be a major priority, especially as they serve as the heart of the home for both daily living and entertaining. Additionally, generous primary bathrooms and closets remain key factors for buyers and are features that will never go out of style.

HOW HAS “LIVABILITY” CHANGED WHAT BUYERS ARE WILLING TO COMPROMISE

ON?

Livability is always a changing landscape, with buyer priorities shifting as lifestyles and circumstances evolve. During the COVID era, pools and multiple home offices were huge factors as people spent more time at home and relied heavily on remote work. As work-from-home continues to slow, those features are no longer as important to many buyers. The same is true for pools, which, while still offering fun and aesthetic appeal, have faced increased concern due to concrete cancer issues, creating some negative perceptions. Today, access to community amenities and nature appears to be a stronger driving factor for buyers when evaluating livability.

WHAT ADVICE DO CLIENTS OFTEN OVERLOOK AT FIRST, BUT LATER APPRECIATE?

This varies greatly between buyers and sellers, as each side experiences the transaction very differently. For buyers, negotiation strategy is critical, and the option period can be difficult to navigate because inspection reports often feel overwhelming and make it seem like the home is falling apart. Having a knowledgeable inspector who can clearly break down what truly matters versus routine maintenance is crucial for buyer confidence. On the seller’s side, the process is much more personal since the home represents years of memories and a significant part of their lives. Successfully guiding sellers means supporting them through the emotional side of the transaction while thoughtfully managing the terms of the deal.

OVER 50 Years OF Texas BARBECUE Tradition

A beloved West Austin staple built on heritage, hospitality, and slow smoked barbecue.

ARTICLE BY STEVEN VALENTIN

PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF THE COUNTY LINE

Over 50 years ago, The County Line Barbecue began when a group of young Texans set out to create something special in Austin, rooted in barbecue and local heritage. In 1975, founders Bruce Walker, Ed Norton, Skeeter Miller, Rick Rocky, and Randy Goss transformed a historic speakeasy into the original County Line on the Hill, housed in Cedar Crest Lodge, a 1934 stone building perched atop one of Travis County’s highest hills.

Built on four guiding principles, The County Line focused on high-quality smoked meats, including ribs, brisket, sausage, and chicken, paired with classic sides like cole slaw, potato salad, and beans. Generous portions, reasonable prices, friendly table service with linens, and authentic Texas settings defined the experience.

Opening night sparked a tradition when menus were hand-written on Big Chief Tablets, which later became keepsakes filled with drawings and messages from guests and artists. As Austin grew, The County Line expanded to new locations, including County Line on the Hill, which opened in June 1975 in an old speakeasy.

The brand continued to grow with the opening of County Line on the Lake in 1980, additional locations across Texas and the Southwest, and the launch of Air Ribs in 1990. In 2025, The County Line celebrated its 50th anniversary.

Located in a former speakeasy with sweeping Hill Country views, The County Line on the Hill at 6500 W. Bee Cave Road, Austin, Texas 78746, serves legendary barbecue and is open daily for lunch and dinner, with sunsets as memorable as the meal.

MID-CENTURY WARMTH, REIMAGINED

There’s a certain moment when a house stops feeling new and starts feeling like home. It isn’t marked by square footage or finishes alone. It is something quieter, more emotional. In this home, designer Kate Manz set out to do exactly that: give a newly built home a heartbeat and a soul.

Rather than treating the house as one sweeping statement, she approached each room as its own story, layered with meaning, memory, and texture. The result is a home that feels collected, personal, and deeply lived-in.

“My love for design goes hand in hand with the people and stories that bring it to life,” she says. “I absolutely love seeing the evolution from concept to completion and all the elements and people that help bring those ideas to reality.”

That philosophy becomes especially important in the home’s expansive open-concept living area, where scale could easily overpower intimacy.

THE OPEN CONCEPT, REIMAGINED

The main living space is defined by bringing the outside in with sweeping outdoor views and generous proportions. Rather than fighting that openness, embrace it.

“The big open concept room really highlights the expansive outdoor views,” she says, “but making intimate spaces within that open room was really important.”

A layered niche wall, created in collaboration with the interior architect Nick Flower, brings both structure and softness to the room. It introduces texture, depth, and a place for unique objects and family heirlooms to live, turning negative space into a personal gallery.

ENTRYWAY: A WARM WELCOME

The entryway sets the tone with a simple but powerful goal: Welcome to my home.

Natural stone underfoot grounds the space, while a soft vintage rug and living greenery immediately soften the experience. Art with personal meaning invites guests to linger rather than rush through.

POWDER BATH: SMALL ROOM, BOLD SPIRIT

If there’s one place Manz encourages clients to take risks, it’s the powder room. Here, she leaned into terracotta earth tones, layering textures and tile sizes for visual interest and warmth. Patterned and solid tiles work together, while textured wall coverings and a sculptural stone sink elevate the space from functional to delightful.

LOUNGE: A STUDY IN CALM AND DEPTH

Designed as a counterpoint to the openness of the main living area, the lounge is a cocoon, both peaceful, layered, and deeply versatile. It’s a place for reading, movie nights and slow mornings.

Rich tones and varied textures do the heavy lifting here, creating depth without heaviness. Soft lighting and custom upholstery make the room feel both intentional and effortless.

At its core, this home is a reminder that design isn’t about perfection, but rather it’s about feeling. By treating each room as its own narrative while weaving in warmth, history, and human connection, a space was created that already feels loved.

Supporting The Next Generation

Rodeo Austin’s youth programs build leadership, responsibility, and opportunity through agriculture, education, and hands-on experience.

BY MICHELLE WOOD

PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF RODEO AUSTIN

Rodeo Austin has returned to the Travis County Expo Center this March, bringing ProRodeo events, livestock shows, concerts, carnival attractions, and more from March 13–28, 2026. Beyond the excitement, the event reflects something deeply familiar to Central Texas, a shared sense of home built through tradition, education, and community involvement. Throughout the month, students step into the spotlight, presenting livestock projects and educational work that are the result of months of preparation. Youth Agricultural Competitions, including livestock events, skillathons, public speaking, and the Youth Art Show, highlight the experiences that help young Texans build skills, confidence, and leadership, values that strengthen families, communities, and the places they call home.

HOW TO SUPPORT YOUTH PROGRAMS

1. Support the Youth Livestock Auction

The Youth Livestock Auction supports students raising steers, swine, lambs, goats, poultry, and rabbits. Purchasing an animal or registering as a buyer helps offset project expenses and allows students to reinvest in future projects while gaining practical experience in planning, accountability, and financial decision-making.

2. Contribute to Youth Scholarships

Scholarships support students continuing their education after participating in youth programs. These awards recognize involvement across livestock, leadership development, public speaking, and academic achievement, helping students build on skills developed through years of structured participation.

3. Sponsor Youth Agricultural and Educational Programs

Sponsorships fund a broad range of youth initiatives, including livestock shows, skillathons, public speaking competitions, and the Youth Art Show. This support helps cover operational needs and educational resources, ensuring diverse programs remain accessible to students with varied interests.

4. Volunteer Across Youth Competitions and Events

Volunteers assist with livestock shows, auctions, school tours, educational contests, and art exhibitions. Their involvement supports smooth event operations and creates opportunities for students to present their work, compete, and engage with the community.

5. Donate to Youth Education and Creative Initiatives

Direct donations support programs beyond livestock, including skillathons, public speaking, and the Youth Art Show. Flexible contributions allow resources to be directed where they are most needed throughout the year.

6. Attend and Share the Mission

Attending youth competitions and sharing program highlights helps expand awareness and encourages continued community support for youth education and development.
