Celebrating Kids & Pets

Dear neighbor,

This issue is really special to me. As a dad, I get to see firsthand the joy kids bring and the positive impact they have on our communities.

Kids are the future and greatest blessings in our lives. Their innocence, curiosity, and endless potential can change the world in amazing ways. They represent our biggest efforts and investments. That’s why we’re excited to share the best for West Austin's kids in this issue.

We also have to recognize our pets. Their companionship makes a big difference for both kids and adults. Pets offer unconditional love and teach us important life skills in a nurturing environment. The bond between kids and their pets is powerful, nurturing qualities like empathy, responsibility, and companionship.

As we celebrate the joys and benefits that both kids and pets bring into our lives, I hope this issue brings a smile to your face and highlights their importance. Thanks for being a part of our community, and happy reading!

With gratitude,

August 2024

CREATING FAMILY SPACES

conversation

Brooklynn Carney, founder of Wil and Faye, is seen as a top interior designer in West Austin. Renowned for their creative and talented team, Wil and Faye stands out for creating beautiful and functional spaces for growing families and their pets. We caught up with Brooklynn to learn more about her approach and tips on design.

A
with Brooklynn Carney, Founder of Wil and Faye
“When designing spaces for a growing family, we recommend focusing on a few key things: durability, cleanability, and safety.”

When designing spaces for families with children, durability, cleanability, and safety are key. Brooklynn advises, “When furnishing a living room, for example, invest in the main furniture items like the sofa, area rug, coffee table, and media stand. Look for pieces that can be climbed on with sticky fingers and live to tell the tale—solid wood frames and performance fabrics are the way to go.” She recommends Joybird and Anabei for their durable and stylish sofas.

Storage is another crucial aspect. Providing storage for toys and crafts while ensuring safety is essential. “Try storage ottomans, arched/curved consoles, and round side tables,” she suggests. Keeping accessories minimal and choosing materials like wood or metal over ceramic and glass can prevent breakage. “Less is more when you’re accessorizing a room

for tiny humans. Keep things soft and cozy, avoid ceramic and glass materials, and opt for wood or metal vases instead.”

Pet-friendly interiors also require balancing practicality with aesthetics. Pets can bring challenges like scratches and stains, but there are ways to address these without compromising style. “For pet-friendly area rugs, check out Ruggable, Revival rugs, and Flor. Ruggable and Revival both have machine washable options, and Flor features a wide range of residential carpet tiles. I always get a couple extra tiles in case of an accident or tough stain,” she shares. To avoid chewable furniture legs, she suggests opting for pieces with no legs or metal legs. “A thin wood leg can resemble an enticing stick, so no leg or a metal leg for a chair or casegood can sometimes be the best option,” she explains.

Brooklynn’s design services cover every stage of a family’s needs. “Since we do everything from consulting to furnishing and styling, to renovations and new builds, we pretty much have all the bases covered for any kind of revamp our clients are looking for!”

Understanding the busy lives of parents, Brooklynn offers a comprehensive approach to home design. “We design, procure, warehouse, and install everything from large furniture to bedding and tableware, without requiring our clients to lift a finger!”

For families seeking a quick yet impactful home transformation, the VIP week service is ideal. This expedited, fully remote process alleviates the stress of a prolonged design schedule. Brooklynn says, “A drawn-out design schedule can get tiresome and add unnecessary stress, but after a couple of days of prep work, measurements, and a video, we’re able to fully dive into a project and design up to four rooms in a 5-day period. The cherry on top is that we’re able to accomplish the full design completely remotely!”

If you have seen this on a truck license plate, you just may be ready to join the BrockStar family! We aren’t like any normal family, but we assure you that you will want to be a part of it. Owner and operator Brock Anderson is a native Texan. While spending his younger years in the urban sprawls of Dallas his desire to create an amazing family business was fortified out on the high plains of Texas. In the small city called Farwell, nestled in the Panhandle area between Lubbock (Wreck’m Tech) and Amarillo, Brock gained his wealth of knowledge on all thing’s pests from his father Ron, a PHD Entomologist. During this time Brock worked as one of the only employees in his father’s crop consulting company. During that time, he learned the value of hard work, proper pest identification and loyal customer service. This instilled a passion in Brock to one day create a company that is customer focused and geared toward educating his clients. Let’s be honest, bugs ain’t sexy but the science behind them is Ryan Reynolds hot.

After attending Texas Tech, Brock started his company in South Austin in 2012 with a leap of faith and a desire to help people with the specialized knowledge he had learned. Taking his catchy nick-name “BrockStar”, and running with it. The first years were rough, he worked two jobs to make ends meet. While pushing through all of the “you should focus on something that makes more money” and “I don’t think this is going to work for you” negative Nancys. Knowing that in America, all it takes is a dream and the drive and you can accomplish anything!

The company is based on values held dear to him and his family: (1) Go local whenever possible (2) Treat your clients like you would treat your own family (3) Better living through chemistry

Brock prides himself on growing his company organically, sticking to his keep’n it local mantra, and only doing business with families that fit the brand. Brock has created a client list from referrals and enjoys nurturing those friendships through the years.

OUTDOOR PLAY & PETAREAS

In our conversation with John Patton, Owner of ForeverLawn Austin, we discussed the inspiration behind the company’s innovative artificial grass solutions. ForeverLawn Austin grew from a passion for transforming outdoor spaces and tackling common landscaping challenges, especially for families with kids and pets. Explore the benefits of choosing ForeverLawn Austin.

CAN YOU SHARE A SUCCESS STORY OR FEEDBACK FROM CLIENTS WHO HAVE INSTALLED FOREVERLAWN PRODUCTS?

Absolutely! One of our most rewarding success stories comes from a local family who had struggled with maintaining a backyard that could withstand their two energetic dogs and three young children. They decided to install our K9Grass™ and Playground Grass™, and the transformation was remarkable. The parents were thrilled with how the products eliminated muddy paws and the constant need to reseed their lawn. They were especially pleased with the added safety features, knowing their kids could play without worry. They’ve told us that installing ForeverLawn was one of the best decisions they’ve made for their home.

Transforming Outdoor Spaces with ForeverLawn Austin’s Artificial Grass Solutions

WHAT SETS FOREVERLAWN APART FROM OTHER ARTIFICIAL GRASS COMPANIES?

ForeverLawn stands out because we are a solution-based company and of our commitment to quality and innovation. The solution is composed of a superior premium product, a customized installation, and an understanding of the maintenance protocol to properly maintain. Our products, like K9Grass™ and Playground Grass™, are specifically designed with unique features to address the needs of kids and pets. For instance, K9Grass™ has antimicrobial protection built into the blades, which helps keep odors and bacteria at bay, creating a cleaner environment for pets. Our Playground Grass™ is engineered with safety in mind, offering a soft, cushioned surface that meets critical fall height standards to protect children during play. We use high-quality materials and advanced manufacturing techniques to ensure our products are durable, long-lasting, and safe.

HOW DOES FOREVERLAWN ENSURE THAT ITS PRODUCTS ARE ECO-FRIENDLY AND SAFE FOR BOTH CHILDREN AND PETS?

We prioritize eco-friendliness in our products by using sustainable materials and practices. Our artificial grass includes 25% renewable or recycled materials, reducing the environmental impact. Additionally, we focus on creating surfaces that conserve water, require no harmful pesticides or fertilizers, and lower overall maintenance requirements. Safety is paramount, which is why our products are rigorously tested to ensure they are free from harmful chemicals and safe for both children and pets.

WITH SUMMER COMING TO AN END NEXT MONTH, WHAT COMMON PESTS SHOULD FAMILIES BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR RIGHT NOW, AND WHAT PEST CONTROL MEASURES SHOULD THEY TAKE TO PREPARE THEIR HOMES AND OUTDOOR LIVING SPACES FOR THE FALL?

Roaches, ants, wasps, and flies are still very active at this time. Make sure door thresholds and windows are sealed properly. 98% of insect entry is through poorly sealed doors, so ensure that weather stripping is solid. Also, as temperatures drop, rodents and squirrels will start nesting. It’s a good time to trim trees away from the roofline, at least 3 feet, and check the garage doors for gaps at the edges.

Brock and Heather Anderson of BrockStar Pest Services

WHAT UNIQUE ECO-FRIENDLY AND PET-SAFE PEST CONTROL SOLUTIONS DOES BROCKSTAR PEST SERVICES OFFER, AND WHAT SETS YOUR TEAM APART IN DELIVERING THESE SERVICES?

The products we use are all rated for residential use, so no one ever needs to be concerned about exposure. We don’t “spray” the inside of the home unless it is absolutely necessary, and then we do very spot-specific treatments to keep the amount of products inside the home to a minimum. We believe that pests can be stopped before they make entry.

CAN YOU SHARE A SUCCESS STORY WHERE YOUR SERVICES MADE A SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCE FOR A FAMILY WITH KIDS AND PETS?

Oh man, we have so many amazing stories, but the one that sticks out was a really bad bed bug infestation we handled in 2019. The client was experiencing a string of bad luck and had a guest bring bed bugs into the home while staying over the weekend. A few months had gone by, and the client and her two kids were getting eaten alive. She had tried over-the-counter products and had no luck. She had called four other companies that were referred to her, but they were all out of her price range. When she called us, she was sleep-deprived and on the verge of a breakdown. We inspected the property, and it was a significant infestation. We discussed the procedure and pricing, and she was not able to financially handle the cost. We made a decision to do this treatment for a quarter of the price. Once we completed the job successfully, her story of struggles touched us, so we took no payment. Again, relationships are very important to us, and we are not just the next company looking to take people’s money. We still get referrals from her!

“Safety is first and foremost when it comes to our treatments. Pets and kids are always top of mind, and we customize each treatment plan to fit each home.”
“A major industry misconception is that all the products we use are extremely toxic. Our general treatments use pet and kid friendly products in targeted areas, with the customer’s peace of mind as our goal.”

WHAT ARE SOME COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT PEST CONTROL WHEN IT COMES TO HOMES WITH CHILDREN AND PETS, AND HOW DOES BROCKSTAR ADDRESS THESE CONCERNS?

A major industry misconception is that all the products we use are extremely toxic to everything and everyone around the treated area. While we do have some strong products in our arsenal, our general treatments use pet- and kid-friendly products in targeted areas. All of my clients have the information for each and every product used on the property. If they have any concerns, then we go in a different direction. Again, we customize with the customer’s peace of mind as our goal.

INSPIRING A LIFETIME LOVE OF LEARNING

The Magnolia School

Glenn Carter, Training Director; Ellen Carter, Head of School; Meghan Tapp, Admissions Director
ARTICLE BY MICHELLE WOOD | PHOTOGRAPHY BY TROY DONEY
“First and foremost, we make sure the kids are excited to learn.”

- Ellen Carter, Head of The

Magnolia School

Nestled in the city of Lakeway, Texas, The Magnolia School aims to inspire a lifetime love of learning in every child. This nurturing and innovative environment, led by Ellen Carter, Head of School; Glenn Carter, Training Director; and Meghan Tapp, Admissions Director, offers private Pre-K through Middle School education. Emphasizing exploration, empowerment, and tailored learning, their approach is backed by research and proven results.

The Magnolia School focuses on tailoring the right methodology for each child, rather than following a general plan for a large group. “We are passionate about giving kids a fun and positive school experience,” said Ellen Carter. Their approach to teaching is unique, particularly with the use of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). They ensure learning is exciting for their students and adjust their methods if students aren’t motivated. “We really wanted to create a school where the individual’s learning path dictated their instruction,” added Meghan Tapp.

Effective teaching is emphasized, with the belief that if a student can’t perform a task independently after instruction, then the teaching wasn’t effective. “We make sure the kids are excited to learn, if they aren’t we rearrange to make it motivating for them,” said Ellen. Combining science and education, they focus on problem-solving and individualized learning paths.

The school has numerous success stories that highlight its impact. Ellen recalled one instance, “We had a preschooler join us this spring coming from another school where she struggled to settle in and was reluctant to go. Her parents decided to start with just 2 mornings a week and by the end of week 2 she was begging to come everyday.” Glenn added, “My favorite stories are when students completely

change their academic profile. For example, we had one second-grade boy join our school because he was struggling to learn to read. After successful instruction, he became a vivacious reader with an insatiable appetite for fantasy.”

The small class sizes and collaborative approach give teachers a deep understanding of each child’s needs, which is especially beneficial for supporting children with special education needs—a priority at The Magnolia School.

Looking ahead, The Magnolia School is excited to expand its extracurricular activities to further enrich student experiences. In the fall, the school plans to offer two fine arts classes, including acting, dance, and drama, after school. Additionally, they are working on adding a chess club and have plans to participate in spelling bees and math competitions with other local schools. “We feel so blessed to be a part of the West Austin community,” reflected Tapp. “We believe that providing an alternative approach to education will greatly benefit the community by allowing each child to access academic success and develop a love of learning that will follow them throughout their lifetime, hopefully bringing innovation and creative thinkers to our community and build a fantastic future.”

Discover what makes The Magnolia School special by visiting its unique, nurturing environment at 3500 Ranch Rd 620 S Bldg G, Bee Cave, TX 78738.
