Sergio Garcia and his wife Angela Garcia, local golf icons, have dedicated themselves to making a difference in the lives of Texas children and families. Sergio, is a Spanish professional golfer with numerous international wins, including a win at the Masters and a Ryder Cup record of 28.5 points. Angela, is a former University of Texas golfer who later pursued a successful broadcasting career. Together, they sat down with West Austin City Lifestyle to talk about the Sergio & Angela Garcia Foundation and FORE Kids ATX, an annual event to raise funds for their charity projects. SERGIO, AS A PROFESSIONAL GOLFER, AND ANGELA, WITH YOUR GOLFING BACKGROUND AT THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS, HOW HAS THE GAME OF GOLF SHAPED NOT JUST YOUR PERSONAL LIVES BUT ALSO YOUR PHILANTHROPIC VISION, ESPECIALLY WITH THE INCEPTION OF FORE KIDS ATX? SG: For me, obviously, golf has given me the possibility of helping a lot of people, and that’s something that I’ve always been very thankful and very lucky about. The least I can do is to give back as much as I can to those people who need it because of everything I’ve been able to achieve throughout my career and in golf. CONTINUED >

AG: I have always been a big believer in what the game of golf teaches young people: how it instills integrity, honesty, and the joy of outdoor activities that span generations. A son can play with his father and his grandfather. There aren’t many sports or activities that offer this multi-generational experience. Most of the young people we meet who play golf are extremely respectful, confident, look you in the eye, and take their hats off when they go inside. They have learned so much from participating in such a wonderful sport, and we believe that every kid, regardless of their background, should have the opportunity to play golf. AS PROUD AUSTINITES, YOU’VE SELECTED CERTAIN ORGANIZATIONS TO BENEFIT FROM FORE KIDS ATX AND ITS CHARITY EVENT. WHAT’S THE STORY BEHIND THESE CHOICES? WHAT PERSONAL CONNECTIONS OR EXPERIENCES MADE THESE ORGANIZATIONS STAND OUT FOR YOU? AG: It was not easy to pick the initial charities that FORE Kids ATX and the Sergio and Angela Garcia Foundation would support because there are so many great and worthy organizations in Austin. However, we strongly believe in the work that the organizations we support do, and we stand behind our choices 100%. Dell Children’s Medical Center is a no-brainer because they provide world-class healthcare to every child in Central Texas. We’ve had to take our own son to Dell Children’s several times, and the care we received was incredible. Foster Village is essential in helping foster kids and the families that take them in. They provide everything from diapers, car seats, cribs, shoes, toys, to backpacks for school. They also offer therapy and play therapy for foster children and support biological children of foster families as well as foster parents. Save Muny is working to save Lions Municipal Golf Course in the heart of Austin, Texas, ensuring that children have a place to enjoy the outdoors and learn the game of golf, which means a lot to us and our foundation. The UGLI Foundation, our Anti-Bullying Foundation, is of utmost importance as bullying continues to rise in schools and on social media. Our mission is to end bullying forever, making the world a better place for children. LOOKING AHEAD, WHAT ARE THE BROADER DREAMS AND OBJECTIVES YOU HOLD FOR YOUR FOUNDATION? HOW DO YOU ENVISION ITS EVOLVING ROLE IN THE COMMUNITY? AG: We love the organizations that we already support, and we know of several others that we would like to get involved in. We also want our event, FORE Kids ATX, to become the premier event in Austin, Texas when it comes to fundraising. People come, they give donations, they give sponsorships, and in turn for that, they get to have an incredible experience with local celebrities and celebrities from all over the world, golfers, culinary figures, other athletes, actors, singers, musicians. The word is spreading that FORE Kids ATX is an incredible event, and we encourage people to secure their sponsorships and tables early in 2024 because it’s going to sell out even faster than last year. Opened in January 2021, Pinthouse Brewing, an expansion of the Pinthouse Pizza family of brewpubs in the Greater Austin area, is celebrated for its commitment to making everything in-house. Renowned for its award-winning beer and exceptional food, it also offers a warm and inviting atmosphere. Krystal Angelo, the Director of Diversity, Inclusion, and Philanthropy at Pinthouse, shares how the establishment’s commitment to embracing families has shaped its distinct identity and role within the community. AT THE HEART OF PINTHOUSE’S SUCCESS IS NOT JUST A PASSION FOR CRAFT BEER AND GOOD FOOD, BUT ALSO AN UNDERSTANDING OF HOW BEER CAN BRING PEOPLE TOGETHER. CAN YOU SHARE HOW THIS PHILOSOPHY OF BEER AS A UNIFYING FORCE HAS INFLUENCED PINTHOUSE’S JOURNEY AND CONTRIBUTED TO ITS ROLE AS A CHERISHED GATHERING SPOT IN AUSTIN? Ultimately, I think Pinthouse offered something new(ish) to Austinites: a place where you could casually grab a bite and have a world-class pint with your entire family. However commonplace it is now, “allowing” kids at a brewpub was not very popular back in 2012. We believe that the brewpub model should be a part of the social fabric of a community, and by including entire families, we think we’ve helped to shape an inclusive social fabric.

COULD YOU SHARE A PARTNERSHIP THAT HAS BEEN PARTICULARLY IMPACTFUL FOR YOU AND THE COMMUNITY? One special beer release that continues to give me the feels is our annual Manimal release, in honor of an Austin brewing community friend, Peder Pederson. We release this beer every October 20th and donate a portion of the proceeds to mental health initiatives for folks working in the craft brewing industry.

Through our friends at Odell Brewing Company, we brought a very special program to Austin: “The House That Beer Built.” Odell initiated the program in 2013 with Habitat for Humanity. They loved the program and asked if it would “travel.” Odell was certain that HTBB would be a great fit in Austin, with Pinthouse at the helm. So we gathered some Austin brewery friends and got to it. Pinthouse successfully participated in HTBB for the 2014, 2016, and 2018 builds. HOW HAVE PINTHOUSE’S COMMUNITY EFFORTS BEEN RECEIVED BY YOUR TEAM AND REGULARS, AND COULD YOU REFLECT ON THE BROADER IMPACT THESE INITIATIVES HAVE HAD IN AUSTIN? We know that our community efforts are well-received by our regulars, Team Members, and community partners. Our charitability is certainly one way we can communicate our company’s ethos to folks, which helps attract and retain our amazing Team Members. Fortunately, we have been able to donate over $300,000 to the Greater Austin community since opening in 2012. LOOKING FORWARD, WHAT EXCITING PROJECTS OR EVENTS IS PINTHOUSE PREPARING THAT THE AUSTIN COMMUNITY SHOULD BE EXCITED ABOUT? We are excited to launch our new programming: “Pinthouse P.I.N.T. Project: Provisions and Initiatives for the Needs of Texans” in early 2024. The focus of the PINT Project will be to help combat food insecurity in Central Texas. Each quarter, Pinthouse will partner with a different organization within the food insecurity sector. Through in-pub

In addition to providing monetary funds, Pinthouse Team Members will also have the opportunity to volunteer with these community partners. And PINT Project has a Charity Golf Tournament on the horizon as well, which we’re all pretty stoked about! LASTLY, WHAT IS YOUR PERSONAL FAVORITE BEER FROM PINTHOUSE’S SELECTION? However, obvious, my favorite beer has got to be Electric Jellyfish. From its humble beginnings as a newfound - albeit not initially beloved - “hazy IPA,” to Austin’s ubiquitous IPA with its captivating can art (shout out to our amazingly talented graphic designer, Wes Lebert). It’s truly remarkable how cherished it is by Austinites (and beyond!). Electric Jellyfish has become a part of Austin culture in a way that none of us could have imagined or predicted. At M Robinson Fine Jewelers, the focus is not only on high-end jewelry but community involvement. The store’s community-centric initiatives gained momentum amid the challenges of 2020. CEO Raymond Gill recalls, “During community uncertainties, we stayed connected through Facebook Live events called ‘Spirits and Sparkles.’” These events paired local wineries and distilleries and highlighted jewelry pieces. “Since that year, we have continued to find ways to keep growing and nurturing our relationships with the community which resulted this year with us hosting our first Giving Tuesday Sip and Shop event with Abigail E. Keller Foundation.” The Abigail E. Keller Foundation provides medical support to terminally ill children and their families. Gill shares, “We were so touched. The store’s atmosphere contributes to its unique role in community events. “Our store is warm and welcoming,” Gill states, highlighting the spacious showroom that caters to large gatherings. “Abigail E. Keller Foundation was able to meet its goals for Giving Tuesday. In addition, our store was so taken aback by the giving hearts of the guests that we doubled our contribution to the cause.” In discussing the significance of jewelry, Gill reflects, “When someone comes into the store to buy a piece of jewelry, they are looking for that perfect piece that has a purpose, just like many philanthropic endeavors have a cause. That one piece is

something that will be a symbol of someone’s love like a watch for graduation...[and] that watch reminds them daily of what they have accomplished and the love that got them where they are.” Looking ahead to 2024, the store plans to continue its community engagement. “We’re excited to host various events throughout 2024, including another Giving Tuesday Sip & Shop,” Gill notes, inviting everyone to participate and share their stories. A delicious pink cocktail perfect for ladies celebrating ladies and made with Pantalones Tequila. Galentine’s Day, on February 13th, is the ideal time to celebrate your closest friends. Elevate your celebration with the Pink Heart Paloma, featuring Pantalones Blanco Tequila co-founded by locals Matthew and Camila McConaughey. This cocktail combines pomegranate’s rich flavor with grapefruit’s zest for a delicious tribute to friendship.
Pink Heart Paloma ingredients: • • • • •
2 Tbsp Pomegranate Arils 1/4 Lime 1/3 cup Pomegranate Juice 2/3 cup Grapefruit Juice 3 oz Pantalones Organic Blanco Tequila • 4 oz Club Soda
directions: Step 1. Grab your cocktail shaker and throw in a lime wedge and a handful of pomegranate arils and muddle with a wooden spoon or a drink muddler. Step 2. Next, pour in a mix of pomegranate juice, grapefruit juice, and Pantalones Tequila. Fill your shaker 2/3 full with ice, cover it up, and give it a 30-second shake. Step 3. Strain into two glasses filled with fresh ice and top each with club soda. Garnish with a grapefruit wedge and a sprig of mint.
