This is the time of year when the Texas Hill Country truly shines. In West Austin, with its rolling hills, green expanse, and the beautiful waters of Lake Austin and Lake Travis, now is the best time to enjoy all that our area offers. Throughout the seasons, these lakes remain as undeniable anchors for the community, playing a central role in what makes our region extraordinary. The neighborhoods of West Austin offer more than just picturesque views. They provide a lifestyle that’s intertwined with the natural surroundings. As the holiday season ramps up, we all understandably become busy and might overlook the beauty that lies just outside our doors. As someone who calls this region home, I’m thrilled to spotlight a few of the gems that my family and I enjoy, especially during the fall holiday season.

Lakeway Marina has been a community staple since the 1960s and provides a range of services, from boat rentals to annual maintenance. It’s the perfect go-to spot for both locals and visitors to appreciate the lake’s beauty during the fall. If you’ve never experienced the thrill of a kayak ride during the golden hour at Lake Travis, let me tell you, it’s something you won’t want to miss. And if you’re seeking other rental options, Austin Pedal Kayaks, Keep Austin Wet, and Float On are at your fingertips. For those in need of a change of scenery and some of the most impressive views of Lake Travis, I highly recommend taking Highway 71 towards Spicewood. Just before you reach the Pedernales River, a turn down Pace Bend Road will lead you straight to the heart of Pace Bend Park.

Its nine-mile stretch along Lake Travis showcases numerous camping sites ideal for a weekend retreat under the stars. The limestone cliffs at the park’s west end provide an excellent view of Lake Travis. It’s also a haven for water enthusiasts, even during the cooler seasons, offering opportunities for canoeing and kayaking from a handy boat ramp. Those in search of tranquility can find solace in the park’s secluded areas and beneath its shade-providing oak trees, perfect for lounging in a hammock. For those with an adventurous spirit, the park’s scenic trails and inviting picnic spots are ready for you to explore. Beyond the Lake Travis shores, there is even more to discover. West Austin City Lifestyle is thrilled to share our recent conversation with Elle Spikes, a local realtor, about finding a home with family in mind. A community advocate in West Austin’s real estate scene, Elle is a native Texan with “real estate in her DNA. With a deep-rooted passion for the industry and an appreciation for the region, Elle brings a commitment to giving back to the community she loves. Her personal journey has been marked by multiple relocations with her family throughout Texas, the West Coast, and back to where her heart belongs, West Austin. This has fueled her commitment to helping others find their dream homes. “I know firsthand the stressors that come with trying to find a home under pressure in an area you know little or nothing about while trying to get your kids plugged in and acclimated all at once,” Elle recounts.

Now living in the Lake Travis area, she encourages newcomers and locals alike to explore its potential. “It’s big enough to offer many ways to fill your day but small enough that it’s pretty likely you will run into someone you know at the grocery store,” she says. “You can be on the golf course in the morning, the lake by lunchtime, and catch a beautiful Texas sunset outside at a local Hill Country brewery, listening to live music over dinner, all in the same day.” During our talk, Elle spoke of her admiration for the region, “West Austin has so much to offer no matter the season of life you are in. It embodies the spirit and energy of Austin while offering a strong sense of community, the best of outdoor lifestyle, great schools, and all within the beauty and uniqueness of the Hill Country.” Elle notes that while each season presents its own set of opportunities, fall stands out in particular. “Every season has its advantages but buyers generally benefit in the fall from lower prices and less competition,” she notes. “When there are fewer buyers on the market, sellers are more motivated and more likely to reduce the price. At the same time, the fall is still a good time to be a seller because so many of the families living in West Austin are settled in for the school year and not interested in having their house on the market. Less homes on the market means less competition for sellers looking to move.” Regardless of the season, Elle brings a personalized dimension to her work, “Who you work with matters when it comes to understanding the personalities of the various West Austin communities and finding which one is the best fit for you to call home.”

Every November in Central Texas, families gather to give thanks, and the Bee Cave Arts Foundation introduces yet another reason for gratitude – BuzzFest. This vibrant fusion of art, technology, and community has emerged as a transformative force in the local art scene. From its humble beginnings, BuzzFest has grown exponentially in stature and influence. Deby Childress, the Director of the Bee Cave Arts Foundation, emphasizes the foundation’s commitment to a wide range of artistic expressions, saying, “The Bee Cave Arts Foundation promotes all types of art - painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography,

etc., but we had never featured art that involved technology, art, science, and electronic music. This is a popular area, and we wanted to feature this type of work. We also wanted to host an outdoor public art event that would be enjoyed by all ages.” This forward-thinking music, tech, and art festival has gained momentum thanks to a partnership with masters Barna Kantor and Kyle Evans of dadaLab, known for their work at the intersection of art, science, and technology. In just three years, BuzzFest has evolved from a budding idea into a nationally recognized event. She continues, “During our first year, we and found that we hosted 19,000 people for the 3 day event. Restaurants had their best days ever since opening. Get Present To Get Thankful

As we head into the holidays it can be easy to fall into the hustle and bustle of to-dos, shopping lists, and packed schedules. Have you ever felt overwhelmed, forgotten the underlying theme of giving thanks, and spent mindless minutes scrolling through reels in a desperate attempt to regain sanity, or take a mini vacation from it all? Research shows that breaking this pattern and carving out time and space amidst the busyness to unplug, is a way to bring ourselves back to the present moment, focus on what’s most important, and reinvigorate our sense of thankfulness. When we unplug, we take a break from the constant barrage of information and content flooding our daily lives. We can use this time and space to reflect internally, as well as to become more present and connected with our loved ones. Before you turn the page, thinking you don’t have time to unplug, let’s consider the benefits. Depending on your digital use, unplugging can relieve mental clutter within minutes or hours. Prolonged sessions of unplugging can lead to better sleep and mood. When we unplug, if we intentionally train our attention on the positive things around us, we naturally reduce stress, as well as feelings of anxiety and depression. This can improve relationships, promote connection and belonging. All this

1 (9-inch) Pure Butter Pie Crust 1 1/2 cups pecan halves or pieces 3/4 cup evaporated milk 2 large eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 cup (1/2 stick) unsalted butter, melted 6 pouches (1 1/2 cups) light brown sugar 1/2 cup granulated sugar

DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 400°F. 2. Thaw a 9-inch pie crust. Place on parchment lined cookie tray. Pour pecan halves or pieces in pie shell and set aside. 3. Using a whisk combine evaporated milk, eggs, vanilla, salt and melted butter. Whisk in brown sugar and granulated sugar. Pour filling over pecans; pecans will float to surface. 4. Place in oven at 400°F. After 10 minutes reduce heat to 350°F and bake until center no longer trembles, about 35-45 minutes. Enjoy!
