'Tis The Season For Kindness JUST LIKE PRACTICING AN ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE, PRACTICING KINDNESS CAN ELEVATE HAPPINESS AND REDUCE STRESS

Did you know practicing kindness is a form of self-care? A research team from UC Irvine noted a measurable improvement in wellbeing and life satisfaction, as well as a reduction in perceived pain, after study participants engaged in regular acts of kindness. Other research has even linked regular acts of kindness to slowed aging and heightened immune function, likely due to the stress relieving benefits of connecting with, and having compassion for, others.

Kindness produces positive ripples, big and small. These prompts can get you started: • • • • • •

Smile Send a note of encouragement Bring a co-worker coffee Give blood Donate books Pay-it-forward at the grocery store, gas station, etc.

It’s easy to be wary of hidden agendas, but the truth is that authentic kindness feels good. Scientists, like Dr. David Hamilton, Kindness Expert, can prove it by identifying the distinct cascade of chemical changes that occur in our bodies in response to kindness, physically altering our state. When one person is kind, it tangibly affects everyone in the wake of that kindness. If you are kind, you receive the benefits, as well as the person on the receiving end of your act. In addition, it affects anyone that witnesses the act, and anyone who hears of the act from you, the receiver, or witness. In this way, one simple act can touch many lives, inspiring emotional contagion far beyond the initial kindness. Giving a compliment, paying someone’s parking meter, offering a gentle touch, or a helping hand can increase optimism, improve mood and initiate feelings of belonging. Especially now, during the holiday season, we are reminded that connecting with, and caring for one another, can be both free and priceless.

Kind State of Mind How we practice kindness can vary depending on cultural norms, traditions, values and beliefs, yet we can all begin within through the practice of Loving-Kindness meditation. This practice starts with you and is about extending unconditional kindness to all people and things. Combining the evidence-based benefits of kindness and meditation primes you for giving and receiving kindness freely throughout your day. To experiment with this meditation: 1. Sit somewhere comfortable where you can safely close your eyes 2. Allow your breath to settle into a relaxed rhythm 3. Notice any tension in your body, inviting it to melt away with each exhalation 4. Use your imagination to conjure up images and feelings of physical and emotional wellness, inner peace and self-love 5. Thank your body, mind and spirit for all that you are, embracing all aspects of yourself, without judgment 6. With each inhalation imagine loving-kindness filling you up and spilling out into the world 7. Envision yourself connecting to specific individuals through this feeling and perceive them feeling it as they connect with you 8. Expand your connection until you have included everyone and everything on the planet (yes, even those with whom you have differences) 9. If you would like, you can affirm, “I am kindness,” “I give and receive kindness,” and any such sentiment that comes to your awareness 10. Before closing your meditation, ask for inspiration to guide you in your kindness practice throughout your day It’s OK if your thoughts wander. Simply return your attention to your breath and the warmth of loving kindness radiating from within you to others. When beginning this practice, start with a few minutes each day, gradually increasing to 10+ minutes daily. The Wayback Cafe and Cottages is the perfect place to unwind and enjoy the simple things in life. Designed with natural beauty and genuine hospitality in mind, this gorgeous getaway in the Texas Hill Country is the perfect go-to destination for creating cherished memories with loved ones or simply treating yourself to a well-deserved break. The Wayback offers incredible farm-to-table cuisine, cozy cottages for overnight stays, and a stunning setting for private events. Owners Vicki Bly and Sydney Sue opened their doors in January 2019

with the intention of running a small coffee shop. However, their concept later evolved into a casual boutique hotel that celebrates the natural beauty of the Texas Hill Country. Situated just 15 minutes away from downtown Austin, The Wayback is the best of both worlds: you can enjoy all the perks of city life nearby while also enjoying the tranquility of nature. “I grew up in West Texas with a love for family, animals and the beauty and freedom of wide-open spaces” said Vicki Bly, co-owner of The Wayback Cafe and Cottages. fell in love with Austin’s natural beauty. “It is important to us that our Hill Country landscape be preserved, and that people have a gathering place where they feel a connection with the beautiful surroundings of nature.” After successfully owning and operating a small bed and breakfast, The Bremond House in downtown Austin, developing the concept of the Wayback came naturally. In 2014, she partnered with her daughter, Sydney Sue, after purchasing 3 acres of land between Bee Cave Road and the Barton Creek Preserve. “I immediately fell in love with The Wayback when we purchased the land in 2014,” Sydney reflected, “There was a beautifully stacked rock wall in the back of the property hidden between trees and a brush. When I noticed something so old and special to the land, I knew it had a past but a whole new story to tell.” The dream of creating a space for gathering, relaxation and enjoyment with a good meal has certainly grown to fruition. “We chose the name “The Wayback” because we want this to be a place where people sense they can take a break from the fast pace of living in a city, where they can enjoy a good meal, sit under the oak trees and be with friends and family,” shared Vicki. The menu, curated by Head Chef Ron Matty, rotates seasonally in recognition of the gradual changes in the local harvest season. For example, the latest seasonal menu listed starters like a Seared Tuna with charred pineapple, black garlic Sumiso, kimchi hot sauce, and sambal cucumbers. A definite recommendation is the Housemade Fettuccine with Grilled Shrimp plus Kalamata and Castelvetrano olives, radicchio, arugula, lemon zest, sun dried tomatoes, parsley and parmesan; it is amazingly fresh, colorful, and its flavorful texture bursts with every bite. In addition to the delicious food the wines are organic, beers are local, and the cocktails

are fun. Whatever choice you make, you’re sure to be left with a smile. In Bly’s words, “The Wayback for me is a place for people to experience something that cannot be found in everyday life. INGREDIENTS ½ cup butter ½ cup granulated sugar ¼ cup brown sugar 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1 egg 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour ½ teaspoon baking soda ½ teaspoon salt 1 cup chocolate chips

INSTRUCTIONS Preheat oven 350F. Mix melted butter with sugars. Stir in other ingredients. Drop spoonfuls of dough 2" apart onto baking sheets. Bake for 10 minutes.

Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amount up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”
