November is National Gratitude Month, a time to celebrate and give thanks. As we approach the end of another year, we want to take a moment to express our gratitude for all of you. We are grateful for this amazing journey that we have been able to share with our community and appreciate the connection this publication creates every month. As I reflect on the season, I’m reminded of my childhood Thanksgivings and our large family gatherings. For many years, before dinner, my cousins and I would each recite a few lines from a poem. The poem was about geese flying together in “V formation” and was meant to illustrate that, as family, we were truly stronger together. I am often reminded of that poem and so grateful to see the acts of kindness and generosity in our community that shows that same strength and togetherness. Our community is stronger together. Your stories inspire us and we cannot express enough how thankful we are for your support, whether that be through reading our content or sharing your own experiences. Together, we thank you for supporting local businesses in the community, because without them, this publication would not be possible. November we give thanks and are asked to share an attitude of gratitude. However, an attitude of true gratitude is something to be cultivated in our hearts and minds over time. Gratitude is not about settling for what we have, making do without complaint, or thinking we should feel a certain way. In its purest form, gratitude is free of judgment and full of possibility. It is about acknowledging the things that contribute to us in our lives and appreciating them for what they are, no matter how big or small. In 2014, I launched my first annual 30 Days of Gratitude for myself and my clients, inspired by the research of UPenn’s Robert Emmons. He demonstrated that an active gratitude practice noticeably increases happiness and overall WELLness, while decreasing perceived ailments. After 8 years of this practice, I can say it really works. Could your attitude of gratitude use a reboot? A Gratitude Journal is a great start: 1. Select a dedicated notebook 2. 4-7 days/week note 5 things for which you’re grateful 3. Reflect on how each one is a gift in your life 4. Continue for at least 4 weeks 5. Check-In: What do you notice? As with any personal growth practice, allow space for grace. Some days will be easy. Other days, when things go sideways, it may feel more challenging. In these times, suspend judgment and go back to basics. Who and what can you connect with in a meaningful way? Is the sun shining? Are you able to step outside for a breath of fresh air? Who has your back? What you place your focus upon grows. An attitude of gratitude is an invitation to expand our capacity for receiving from everything around us. When we give thanks, the cycle of gifting and receiving is complete. The more we perceive gratitude as a practice and way of being, the richer and more rewarding our experience of it becomes. A few years ago, Faith and Maile met at their church and immediately became best friends. Maile, a local florist, and Faith a photographer, found their skillsets complemented each other perfectly. Bonding over their mutual love of design, they decided to pursue their passions together by offering locals a Pinterest worthy experience. By curating beautiful luxury picnics they’ve achieved their goal, in Mckinnon’s view, “There is something so special about experiencing new things together for the first time, and a luxury picnic is definitely a first for most people. It’s like an event where their Pinterest boards come to life. The elements of a luxury picnic - the great outdoors, delicious food plated to perfection, lively conversations, games, the beauty of florals and the sparkle of lights - set the stage for memories that will last a lifetime.” On top of creating a picturesque ambiance, Honey Social Picnic Co. is committed to zero-waste, as Collins shared, “When we started our business, it was super important to us that we remained zero-waste. In the event planning space, this is really hard to come by.” Collins concluded, “My idea of a perfect picnic would include my closest friends gathered around locally sourced food on a fall day. We’d play music, have fresh florals lining the table, and talk for hours. Being outside recharges me, and it’s such a bonus when I get to be outdoors with the people that I love surrounded by things that make me happy.”

FAITH’S FALL TIPS FOR A PICTURE-PERFECT TABLESCAPE • Forage for flowers and greenery. You can lay it down the center or incorporate it into arrangements. • Watch a tutorial on compote floral arrangements. They are fairly easy to make and are sure to wow your guests. • Make place-setting cards. They can be so simple yet give your tablescape a personal feel. • Bring in all of the delicious, fall earthy tones with things like napkins, serving bowls, candles, menus, etc. Adding textures can’t hurt either inspiration can be found on Pinterest! • Set the mood with candles, and not just for romantic dates! Fall is a time to be cozy, and the added warmth candles bring to a table is unmatched.

B U T T E R O L I V E O IL T UR K E Y INGREDIENTS • 1 whole turkey • ½ cup of Butter Olive Oil • 3 stalks of celery • 1 yellow onion • 1 teaspoon sea salt • 1 teaspoon of ground pepper • 3 sprigs of fresh rosemary • 3 sprigs of fresh thyme • 3 garlic cloves DIRECTIONS Clean and pat dry room temperature turkey. Cut onion and celery stalks to insert into turkey cavity along with herb sprigs and garlic cloves. Pour Con' Olio Butter Olive Oil under the breast skin and outside of the turkey. BEE-ING GRATEFUL FOR BEES It is time to give thanks for all the little things in life - like bees! These hardworking creatures bring sweetness to our lives and ensure that our crops are pollinated. Without them, our Thanksgiving feast would be very different. I sat down with Tanya Phillips, a local beekeeper and owner of the Texas Honey Bee Farm to learn more about these powerful creatures and her mission to educate adults and children about the importance of bees.

MW: HOW DID TEXAS HONEY BEE FARM BEGIN? TP: My journey into beekeeping began in 2011. It started from a simple curiosity about bees and beekeeping, I just thought bees were very interesting. As I started studying them in depth and taking a master beekeeper course, I really began to understand how important their role is in our food supply chain. I quickly realized that there weren’t a lot of local resources in the Austin area to learn about bees and buy supplies, so it was a natural progression to begin teaching classes on beekeeping.

MW: WHAT IS ONE OF THE GREATEST BENEFITS TO BUYING LOCAL HONEY? TP: There are two sides to this: one is getting a special raw food that is antimicrobial

and antibacterial, which thousands of customers have told me helps them with seasonal allergies. The other is knowing when you buy it direct from the beekeeper, you are helping support their hard work. Beekeepers lose 10-30% of their colonies every year, and then make splits from their stronger hives to replenish their colonies.

MW: BESIDES EATING IT, WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE WAYS TO USE HONEY? TP: Honey is fun in lip balm, soap, face masks, and other skin care items, but it’s difficult to work with like that because it’s hard to emulsify it into the product. It separates quickly. My favorite way to eat it is fresh honey still in the honeycomb with a slice of apple, cheese, and a berry on top! It’s so delicious!

MW: WHAT ARE THE MOST PRESSING THREATS TO HONEY BEES AND WHAT CAN WE DO TO HELP? TP: I would say that urban sprawl is a big threat, but it can be helped by planting a lot of flowers that bees need for both nectar and pollen. Bees need flowers that grow at all times of the year, too, not just in the spring.

MW: WHY ARE YOU GRATEFUL FOR HONEY BEES, AND IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE? TP: I’m grateful that honey bees are natural hoarders and they work tirelessly to collect lots of nectar and pollen on every possible day they can fly. Pollination of our fruits and vegetables is a byproduct of their foraging and I LOVE fruits and vegetables! One bee collects 1/12th of a teaspoon of honey in its lifetime of foraging and flies approximately 500 miles before their wings wear out and they can’t fly any more. The worker bees are all females and they literally work themselves to death to ensure the survival of their colony! So as we enjoy our holiday feasts this Thanksgiving, let’s remember the bees.
