Show the Love!
February is the month most often associated with love—but in a community like ours, love shows up in many meaningful ways. It’s found in the small businesses that serve with heart, the neighbors who show up for one another, and the local organizations working quietly to make life better for those around them.
From charming boutiques and cozy cafés to incredible restaurants, our local gems bring charac ter, warmth, and vibrancy to our community. They are truly the backbone of Weatherford and our surrounding area—run by neighbors, friends, and families who pour their hearts into the places we cherish most.
In this issue of Weatherford City Lifestyle, we’re celebrating what it truly means to love local. From entrepreneurs who lead with passion, to service and care that strengthen our community, this month is a reminder that connection is at the core of everything we do. We’re also honored to begin highlighting local nonprofit organizations making a lasting impact right here at home.
Show the love this month—and always—by shopping local and supporting our neighbors and friends. Whether you’re searching for the perfect Valentine’s Day gift or planning a special date night, we have you covered.
As we move into a new year together, I’m deeply grateful for our readers, partners, and community leaders who believe in supporting local and investing in the place we all call home. Thank you for allowing us to share your stories and for being part of this journey.
Wishing you a February filled with connection, kindness, and love — in all its forms.

A LOCAL HEART FOR HOME MAINTENANCE
A FAMILY-OWNED BUSINESS SHOWING LOVE TO HOMES IN OUR COMMUNITY

Our homes are a refuge from all the elements of spring, including weather, insects, pollen, and many others. Yet, we don’t always give our homes the attention they deserve. So, how can you show your house a little TLC this February? Start with a checkup from the experts in home maintenance services.
HomeSmiles Fort Worth owners Jason and Georgia Thomas are both born and raised Texans. While Georgia grew up on a cattle ranch in the western half of the state, Jason was raised near the Piney Woods of East Texas. They both pursued careers in healthcare, which led them to Houston.
After living in the city for 26 years, they were ready for a change. “We wanted to get away from the humidity and the traffic,” Georgia says. So, when the chance to live in Parker County came along, they took it. “A family member had a house up here for sale. We said, ‘Let us help you out. We’ll lease it for a year and see if we like the area.’ We leased the house, and we ended up buying it. And that’s where we’ve been since.”
After years of working in the healthcare system—and dealing with burnout caused by the impacts of the pandemic— Georgia decided it was time to pursue a different career path.
The Thomas family launched HomeSmiles Fort Worth in February of 2025. “We love the values of the corporate office, and we love to be outside working.” And, to clear up any confusion, “No, we’re not a mobile dentist,” Georgia jokes. “People see the name, and they think it’s a dentist, which is kind of funny.”
As a home maintenance service, HomeSmiles focuses on the well-being of your house. Their technicians cover a range of services, from sprucing up your home exterior with pressure washing to changing your air conditioning filters, which reduces dust and allergens in your house. The team also works with commercial and multi-family properties, offering services like dryer vent

cleaning and gutter debris removal. While handling these maintenance tasks separately would typically require 5 or 6 different contractors, HomeSmiles can cover them in one visit and a fraction of the time.
Though their technical name is HomeSmiles Fort Worth, the team is based in Weatherford. “We cover all of Parker County and the west side of Tarrant County—basically I-35 and west,” Georgia says. Their services also extend to surrounding communities, such as Granbury and Mineral Wells.
For the Thomas family, choosing Weatherford was all about finding a community that matched their lifestyle. “I’m a country girl at heart,” Georgia shares. “And I think that’s what drew me to this area. My neighbors are cows and horses, and that’s what I love. And I don’t have to feed them,” she jokes. “Weatherford still has that country feel, even though it’s grown just in the 3 years we’ve been here.”
customers, but for things like that, if you can do it yourself, why not? If we can be part of that education, we can possibly help save one life.”
HomeSmiles also understands that, even though there are some maintenance tasks homeowners can handle themselves, not everyone wants to or is physically able to do them. “Maybe you don’t want to get on a ladder, or maybe you shouldn’t get on a ladder.
“Choosing a home
maintenance
“Choosing a home maintenance service is really about keeping up with the upkeep of your house,” Georgia explains. “A home is the most expensive asset most of us have, and yet, we don’t keep it up the way we do a car. I like to tell people that home maintenance checks are like an oil change for your house.”
service is really about keeping up with the upkeep of your house.”
With that growth comes a wave of new homeowners who might not be aware of the best practices for maintaining their homes. In these situations, HomeSmiles focuses on homeowner education. When it comes to replacing air filters and changing smoke and carbon monoxide detector batteries regularly, Georgia says, “Let us do the first one, and then show you how to do it, so you can do it moving forward. Obviously, we would love to have lifetime
With potential safety hazards, such as the thousands of dryer vent fires that occur in Texas each year, it’s a good idea to consider calling the experts to come out and give your home a checkup. “If you look at what it would cost you to have repairs, it’s going to cost you much more than preventative services. Home maintenance is something we do for homeowners that, in the long run, will save money and possibly save lives.”
Georgia also emphasizes that HomeSmiles techs are trained to visually check for any potential problems around your house that can lead to major damage if left unchecked. Regular service calls
help keep your house energy efficient, increase the life of appliances, and maintain the value of your home. Though the HomeSmiles team doesn’t handle more than small repairs, they can provide the names of reliable and trustworthy contractors for homeowners to consult if something does come up.
With single service calls, comprehensive home maintenance packages, and HomeSmiles 365 (a yearly subscription plan that guarantees your house gets the seasonal care it needs), HomeSmiles can help you handle your to-do lists year-round, freeing up more time to spend with the people you love.
“Home maintenance is something we do for homeowners that, in the long run, will save money and possibly save lives.”
Bonus tip: If you’re looking for ways to spruce up your home and show it some love this February, the HomeSmiles team knows exactly how to make your home smile! With a little window washing, gutter cleaning, and tree debris removal, your home will look fully refreshed just in time for another gorgeous bluebonnet season in Texas.

BECAUSE.
CHOCOLATE.
Chocolate Fondue
• 2 cups heavy cream
• 1 pound premium semisweet chocolate (recommended: Lindt or Callebaut)
• 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract
• 1 tablespoon brandy
• Strawberries, bananas, pineapple, brownies, waffles, marshmallows, Oreos, pound cake, pretzels or any other dipping item of your choice!
Put approximately four inches of water in a saucepan and bring to a slow boil. Place a mixing bowl on top and pour in the heavy cream. Let heat. Or, use a double boiler. Meanwhile, break up or chop the chocolate into small pieces. When the cream feels hot to the touch, add chocolate and whisk until smooth. Whisk in vanilla and brandy (optional). Pour into the fondue pot and light the handy fuel underneath. Keep the flame low as not to burn the fondue. Arrange dippers on a platter and enjoy. For the grown-ups, a spiked chocolate drink from our friend, Martha Stewart.
• 1 tablespoon dark chocolatecovered coffee beans, chopped
In a saucepan over medium heat, combine milk, 1/2 cup cream, and whole coffee beans. Bring to a simmer, turn off heat, cover, and steep beans for 1 hour. Strain liquid and return to saucepan; discard beans. Bring the milk-and-cream mixture back to a simmer, add chocolate, and whisk until incorporated. Remove from heat; whisk in Kahlua. Whip remaining 1/2 cup cream and the confectioners” sugar until soft peaks form. Divide the hot chocolate between 2 cups and garnish each portion with a dollop of whipped cream and a sprinkling of chopped chocolate-covered coffee beans.

When my kids were little, we would address valentines to classmates, deliver flowers to neighbors and decorate the house with hearts and snowflakes (cut from white coffee filters). For dinner, I would make their favorite meal: dessert! Why not? I'd melt chocolate (the good stuff) and let them line up their dippers. They thought dessert for dinner was magical. Of course, I'd fed them a protein-packed after-school snack and served “dinner” early so they could get their sugar wiggles out before bed. Delightful! Happy Valentine's Day!

DIS COVER THE VALAIS REGION OF SWITZERLAND, WHERE ALPINE TRAILS, THERMAL SPRINGS, AND LOCAL TRADITIONS CREATE RESTORATIVE TRAVEL.
AN ALPINE ESCAPE
In Switzerland’s Valais region, wellness and adventure are always part of the same itinerary. Morning could bring a high-alpine hike, afternoon a soak in mineral-rich springs, and evening a table set with traditional cuisine, always including delicious wine and cheese. For travelers, the best part will be finding the perfect balance between exploring the outdoors and relaxing with wellness-infused activities in the heart of the Swiss Alps.
A CAR-FREE ALPINE ADVENTURE IN ALETSCH ARENA
An easy train ride from Zurich lands visitors in the Aletsch Arena, a high-alpine region on the south side of the Bernese Alps, home to three villages: Riederalp, Bettmeralp, and Fiescheralp. Known for its ski slopes in winter and hiking in summer, the area is entirely car-free, making walking and local buses the main modes of transportation through its quaint chalet-lined streets.
One of the main attractions of the ski-in/ski-out area is the Aletsch Glacier, the longest glacier in the Alps. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the 12-mile glacier is visible from several vantage points, shaping every experience in the area.
WHERE TO STAY
ARTICLE BY GABI DE LA ROSA
Located in the heart of Bettmeralp, Hotel Panorama provides no-fuss accommodations steps away from the picturesque Chapel Maria Zum Schnee. The hotel’s restaurant offers delicious regional cuisine, including raclette paired with Swiss wine. A good bottle of Pinot Noir or Gamay is also easy to come by because the Valais region of Switzerland is one of the largest wine-producing areas in the country, with vineyards dotting the steep slopes of the Rhône Valley. In addition to wine and cheese, eating cholera, a covered vegetable pie invented in the region during the cholera epidemic, is a must.
Take in sweeping alpine views across Switzerland’s Valais region.
WHAT TO DO
Begin at Viewpoint Moosfluh, the closest and lowest vantage point of the Aletsch Glacier. From there, trailheads lead to Villa Cassel, once the home of a British financier and now a museum focused on history and conservation. The hike passes through a thousand-year-old forest with views of both the glacier and the Matterhorn.
Walk over Goms Bridge, a nearly 1,000-foot-long suspension bridge that connects two hiking areas over the Rhône River. For a final look at the majestic glacier, take the cable car to Viewpoint Eggishorn. At nearly 10,000 feet above sea level, it offers panoramic views of the Matterhorn, Mont Blanc, Jungfraujoch, or the “Top of Europe,” and the most comprehensive view of the Aletsch Glacier.
HISTORY AND ALPS MEET IN MARTIGNY
A short train ride takes visitors to one of the largest cities in the Valais region of Switzerland. The city is a crossroads between Italy and France, with a history dating back to Roman times. Visitors can tour Roman ruins, including a well-preserved amphitheater, ancient settlements, and Roman baths.
WHERE TO STAY
Martigny Boutique Hotel is minutes from the train station and is one of the few establishments in the city employing people with disabilities. The light and bright hotel provides a comfortable base for exploring the city.
WHAT TO DO
Take the steepest funicular in the world, the MontBlanc Express, on a scenic ascent through the Alps. The funicular connects to a smaller train that leads to the Trient Valley on the French-Swiss border, where, at the top, a full day of activity begins. Hiking, biking, zip-lining, or traversing the Emosson Dam, which straddles France and Switzerland, are all options. The crystal clear blue waters of Emosson Lake are perfect for a picnic or a break between adventures.
Back in Martigny, Barryland, the only theme park in the world dedicated to St. Bernard dogs, offers a look at the history of the dog, bred by monks in the 17th century for alpine rescue work. The Barry Foundation, founded in 2005, continues to preserve the breed and educate visitors about it. Guests can watch the dogs train, play, and interact as they learn about their role in the region.
Roman influence remains visible across the city, including at Les Bains Publics at Hotel Borsari, where visitors can soak in cement wine barrels located in the hotel’s spa. The baths sit on the site of a former wine tank factory and offer a circuit of hot and cold pools in a historically inspired, wine-colored setting.

Love Weatherford
One Local Nonprofit's Mission to Clean Up Parker County
Jeff Oakes, founder of Love Weatherford—a local nonprofit organization—discovered a love for serving his community through trash cleanups after a life-changing event.
While working in construction almost 25 years ago, Jeff suffered a back injury. This led his wife to pursue a career as a nurse anesthetist and become the breadwinner. She is now a professor at TCU, allowing Jeff to be a stay-athome dad.
When the Oakes family moved to Weatherford, they settled several miles outside of town. While they loved
living in the country, they were surprised by the litter that piled up along their street.
After 2 years of seeing trash on his own road—and more of the same as he drove around town—Jeff decided to do something about it. Taking inspiration from a church-group meeting, he began doing community service in the form of trash pickup. He spent 30 minutes outside cleaning up his street. The next day, he picked up more litter. In 4 days, spending just half an hour each day, Jeff cleaned up his street.
And he was hooked on the good feeling he got from giving back to the community. He decided to clean all

the way to town—a distance of 10 miles. Wanting to share this gratifying feeling (and having some free time while his kids were in school), Jeff started a Facebook group to organize cleanups around the city. In April of 2023, Love Weatherford became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. The group has drawn over 1,000 volunteers, cleaned up more than 40 tons of litter and debris, and helped inspire other Parker County towns to clean up their communities.
Love Weatherford has spent the last several years working hard to keep streets inside the city free of debris. However, in our recent interview, Jeff shared that they are heading in a new direction, turning their attention toward the countryside roadways in desperate need of their help.
• WHAT’S NEXT FOR LOVE WEATHERFORD?
The next thing for Love Weatherford is to keep going and see what opens up to us. Sometimes just continuing on is a big accomplishment, especially with the discouragement that happens.
I would love for our movement to catch on in other areas! Texas deserves to be clean and beautiful.
• WHAT IS LOVE WEATHERFORD’S MISSION STATEMENT?
Our mission statement: “Volunteers making Weatherford cleaner, safer, and more beautiful.”
With so many people involved, we are succeeding!
• WHAT DOES A TYPICAL CLEANUP INVOLVE?
There isn’t a typical cleanup, other than using trash bags and grabber tools. Sometimes, it’s seeing a mess alongside the road, pulling over, and cleaning it up. Sometimes, it’s somebody contacting us asking for help, and there are only two or three people. Other times, it’s a huge group. Or someone will text or post on social media that there’s a couch, mattress, boat, etc. that’s been dumped, and we go out and pick it up.
• WHAT’S HELPED LOVE WEATHERFORD KEEP ITS MOMENTUM OVER TIME?
There are countless things that have kept Love Weatherford going. There are way too many to mention all of them, but some of the top things are the good feeling that comes with doing this kind of work, the large number of volunteers, generous donations, and working with people who are completing court-ordered community service.
• HOW HAS THE WEATHERFORD COMMUNITY SHOWN UP IN WAYS THAT SURPRISED YOU?
I don’t know if any of these were surprises because our community is so wonderful. Some wonderful examples include people who have written articles about our movement, those who have offered grants, and organizations that have partnered with us on projects. We also have churches, schools, businesses, HOAs, and scouting groups contacting us because they want to help with cleanups.
“By keeping our city clean and beautiful, we preserve our incredible legacy.”
• IS THERE A RECENT MOMENT OR STORY THAT REALLY CAPTURES THE HEART OF LOVE WEATHERFORD AND HOW YOUR ORGANIZATION GIVES BACK TO THE COMMUNITY?
The other day, we were out picking up trash on Ric Williamson Memorial Highway on a cold morning. Somebody in the community saw us, drove all the way to a coffee shop, and ordered us all hot chocolate! That warmed us up, body and soul. In the summer heat, people sometimes drop off cold drinks, or they pay for our lunch. Love like that is what keeps us going! Our volunteers also love it when people drive by and honk to show their appreciation! It lets us know that they care, and we aren’t alone.
• TELL US WHAT YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT WEATHERFORD AND THE COMMUNITY HERE.
I love Weatherford’s rich history. If our town looks dirty and trashy, no one is going to care about our past. I believe that by keeping our city clean and beautiful, we preserve our incredible legacy. We are a very special and loving community.
I’d also like to say how very grateful I am for all the volunteers, donors, and people who have done so much in so many ways. They are the ones who have kept Love Weatherford going and growing!
Jeff Oakes
Volunteers, donations, and supplies are always welcome! To learn more and become a part of keeping Weatherford beautiful, send a message to jeff@loveweatherford.org or visit the Love Weatherford Facebook page.
