Invest in Lasting Purpose

When we hear the word “investment," our minds often go straight to the balance sheet—market trends, real estate portfolios, or the fluctuating value of a 401(k). While these financial foundations are undeniably important, preparing for this April issue reminded me that true investment is found in things that don’t depreciate.

In Weatherford, Brock, Hudson Oaks, and Willow Park, I see daily examples of our neighbors investing in a lasting purpose. We do this when we pursue personal growth, strengthen our faith, and prioritize our health. We do this for our families through presence, patience, and the shared moments that shape future generations.

At the end of the day, we invest in our community when we show up for one another, standing together in both celebration and challenge. While houses and capital provide a foundation, it is our connection to one another that provides the true “interest” in life. Scripture reminds us that where our treasure is, there our heart will be also; what a blessing it is to place our treasure right here at home.

As you flip through these pages, I encourage you to look at your financial portfolio alongside your personal one of time and heart. I also invite you to support the local businesses featured in this issue. When you choose to shop locally, you aren’t just making a purchase; you are fueling a purpose that keeps this a place we’re proud to call home.

May your investments this month bring you a wealth of prosperity, a high yield of peace, and dividends of love that last for generations.

Our community thrives because of the people who invest their time into making it better. If you’d like to nominate a local leader to be recognized, please send their story to me at diane.kinzer@citylifestyle.com or call (972) 467-1000.

DIGGING DEEP for Legacy

THE ENDURING VISION BEHIND FOSSIL ROCK PRIVATE WEALTH

ARTICLE BY JESSICA CRANDALL LAWRENCE | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Long before mForce Capital | Fossil Rock Private Wealth was a name on a door in Fort Worth, it was a piece of 100 rugged acres in Aledo. Founder Larry Milton once had to jackhammer through solid rock just to build a pool on this property. While digging into the stubborn Texas limestone, he kept uncovering fossils. These preserved remnants of life from another time came to represent something deeper.

The land became Fossil Rock Ranch, and eventually, it was the inspiration behind the private wealth entity he leads today.

Larry’s start in investments began in a torrent. His first day in the business was Oct. 19, 1987, otherwise known as Black Monday. It was the fateful day the market crashed over 22%.

Larry was in his first day of training with EF Hutton in Fort Worth.

“A very good friend of mine told me to keep my head down,” he remembers. “No one knew what was happening, and it felt like the world was falling apart. In hindsight, it was a great time to learn.”

Robert “Bobby” Brown, Senior Wealth Advisor, joined Larry in 2017 after beginning his career in Waco. A Texas Tech alumnus, Bobby completed the H-E-B management program before joining Merrill Lynch in Fort Worth, where he met Larry. Together, they lead Fossil Rock Private Wealth under the broader mForce Capital platform, founded by Larry’s longtime friend Brad Bruce.

“We wanted to tie in with a strong name that was already established in the community,” Bobby says.

Although Fossil Rock is anchored locally, they serve clients across the country. Their niche goes far beyond stocks. The team designs trusted investment solutions, working closely with estate attorneys and CPAs to build comprehensive financial plans that include estate planning, charitable strategies, and tactical asset allocation.

“We really get the opportunity to help people. We are the calm voice through bad markets and hard times.”

Larry has been a leader in wealth management since 1987, building long-term relationships across Fort Worth and Parker County. His wife, Jeaneane Grogan Milton, a third-generation Weatherford native, has been equally invested in the community. Jeaneane’s family helped establish The Project Opportunity Foundation, a program that ensures local students in need at Weatherford High School can complete at least two years at Weatherford College.

“We serve a wide range of clients,” explains Bobby. “From a grandchild who gets a $1,000 gift to someone who has liquidated a business with millions in assets. There is no minimum. We are here to manage your assets for you and give you time back with your family.”

Relationships are the cornerstone of Fossil Rock. Larry, now 65, and Bobby, 34, intentionally blend generational perspectives. Client meetings may last 90 minutes, with as much time spent talking about children and family as markets. They fly across the country to see clients and make annual South Texas tours.

“We earn our clients’ business every day,” Bobby says. “We do a lot of face-toface work. It’s very personal to us.”

The rest of their team, which consists of Senior Client Service Associate, Erin Smith, and Client Service Associate, Linda Castle, pride themselves on providing the highest level of service to their clients. Fossil Rock’s fee-based platform aligns their compensation with client growth. Perhaps most distinctive is their dedication to widowed women.

“Fossil Rock is here to serve the widows,” says Larry. “We call them ‘our girls’. They are very important to us.”

This dedication goes far beyond the typical financial management. The Fossil Rock team will sit for hours to negotiate a better price at a car dealership, send trusted tradesmen to bid on home projects, and personally walk clients through key decisions.

“In this business, we really get the opportunity to help people,” Larry reflects. “I’ve had clients raise children and grandchildren. We are the calm voice through bad markets and hard times.”

Just as he once dug through fossil rock to build something lasting on his ranch, mForce Capital | Fossil Rock Private Wealth now helps families preserve their wealth, their values, and their legacy. mforcecapital.com

FOUR SIMPLE WAYS TO INVEST IN YOUR MORNING AND START YOUR DAY OFF ON THE RIGHT FOOT

habits morning for success

One of the best ways to invest in yourself is by creating a consistent and intentional morning routine. No matter how unpredictable or chaotic the rest of your day may become, starting your morning with self-care and purpose sets a positive tone that stays with you throughout the day.  Once you develop a morning routine that truly resonates with you, you’ll look forward to it every night, knowing it will set the foundation for a productive and fulfilling day.

If you’re ready to elevate your mornings, here are some meaningful ways to invest in your routine and start each day on the right foot.

Be Your Own Barista:

One of life’s simplest pleasures is savoring a homemade coffee each morning. While skipping the drivethru may be tough at first, brewing your own allows you to appreciate the process—and chances are, you’ll end up preferring your own perfect cup of joe.

Get Your Steps In:

An hour-long gym session before work may not be realistic, but a quick morning walk is. Use this time to clear your mind, enjoy nature, and listen to your favorite podcast or artist—an easy way to start your day feeling relaxed.

Enjoy Some Breakfast:

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, yet often the most overlooked. Setting your alarm just minutes earlier to prepare a fresh, nutritious meal can transform your morning, fueling your body and mind for a more energized and productive day.

Read A Book:

Starting your day with a book is far more calming than scrolling through social media. Reading in the morning helps ease you into the day, providing a peaceful and mindful escape that sets a positive, focused tone for what’s ahead.

Redefining MVP: TIM TEBOW’S LIFE BEYOND FOOTBALL

An exclusive Q&A with City Lifestyle

PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

From championship trophies to global humanitarian impact, Tim Tebow’s journey has defied every standard playbook. In an exclusive conversation for the Share the Lifestyle podcast, Tebow pulls back the curtain on the moments that truly defined him, from a humbling middle school church retreat to the life-altering shift of fatherhood. This isn’t just a look back at a career; it’s an invitation into the heart of a man driven by purpose. Read the highlights below, then join us for the full, unfiltered experience by scanning the QR code at the end.

Q: WE ALL KNOW YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS ON THE FOOTBALL FIELD, BUT TELL US ABOUT THE CURL CONTEST.

A: I was competing for my future high school team (my brother’s team), and I pushed myself way past what was smart. I ended up collapsing and needing medical attention. But what stayed with me wasn’t the pain, it was the lesson. Would I be willing to do something that others aren’t? For much of my life, I strived to bring my best for a game, but I hope that I can say at the end of my life I was willing to do that for things that actually matter.

Q: YOU’VE ACHIEVED SO MUCH IN SPORTS. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS YOUR GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT NOW?

A: Becoming a dad. Nothing compares. From the moment I knew my wife was pregnant, I felt a new depth of love for our child, but when you bring your baby home, the responsibility hits you like nothing else. Suddenly, everything you see, every decision you make, you’re asking, “Is this corner too sharp? What happens if she reaches that drawer?” It changes how you see the world and how you see other people.

Q: YOU’VE SPOKEN OPENLY ABOUT DISAPPOINTMENT, ESPECIALLY AROUND FOOTBALL. HOW DID THAT SEASON OF LIFE SHAPE YOU?

A: I talked a lot about that very thing in my book Shaken . We all go through moments where our faith in our abilities and purpose feels rattled, but I believe it’s often in those storms when God can show us who we could become.

Q: YOU TALK A LOT ABOUT COMPARISON CULTURE. WHY DO YOU BELIEVE COMPARISON HAS BECOME SUCH A TRAP TODAY?

A: Because we’re comparing our real, everyday lives to someone else’s highlight reel. Social media shows people’s “best day,” often filtered and staged, and then we measure our reality against that. There’s a reason filters are so popular—it’s not real. We end up scrolling through images that don’t tell the full story, and without realizing it, comparison starts to steal our joy and our gratitude.

“We’re comparing our real, everyday lives to someone else’s highlight reel... comparison starts to steal our joy.”

Q: YOUR FOUNDATION FOCUSES ON THE “MOST VULNERABLE.” WHERE DID THAT CALLING BEGIN?

A: When I was 15, I met a boy in the Philippines who was treated as a throwaway because he was born with physical differences. That moment changed me. I realized God was calling me to pursue a different kind of MVP, not “Most Valuable Player,” but “Most Vulnerable People.”

Q: FINALLY, WHAT’S ONE THING PEOPLE MIGHT BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU?

A: I have some weird coffee habits, which include protein powder, collagen, and cream all mixed together. I love golf dates with my wife. And every night, I bring snacks to bed to share with our dogs. It brings me more joy than it probably should.

This conversation barely scratches the surface. Tim goes deeper into the moments that rattled him, the joys of fatherhood, and one story he has never shared publicly until now. Scan the QR code for the full, exclusive City Lifestyle interview on Share the Lifestyle Podcast.

A PLACE Where Hope LIVES

Center of Hope Equips Parker County Families for Lasting Change

PHOTOGRAPHY

On any given day at Center of Hope in Weatherford, the needs of the community are quietly and steadily unfolding. Some mornings are busier than others, but for Director of Development Courtney McKeown, the weight and the beauty of the work remain constant.

“You hurt for all the needs that you see in your community walking through the door,” she says. “But at the same time, you rejoice that you live in such an amazing community that pulls together to meet these needs each and every day.”

Center of Hope began in the mid-1990s under the name The Provision Center, founded by Terry Jones with a simple mission of providing food and financial assistance to anyone in need. As the organization grew, five Parker County churches united to create what is now Center of Hope. It’s become a Christ-focused center of benevolence designed to combine resources and volunteers for greater community impact.

The goal is to empower people to live successful, joy-filled lives. Between its Weatherford and Springtown locations, Center of Hope serves close to 25,000 households.

“The majority of people come in during a crisis,” McKeown explains. “But we know that the crisis is usually just the top layer. If we want to see lasting change, we must address the underlying needs.”

Those needs include education, career development, and emotional support. Programs include job training, financial management, computer literacy, parenting classes, life coaching, anti-anxiety and stress relief courses, citizenship preparation, and six levels of ESL.

Executive Director Staci Markwardt understands the center’s purpose deeply. She first walked through the doors in

2011 as a volunteer while recovering from a life-altering illness. By 2012, she joined the staff full-time.

“I wasn’t sure I was ready to return to the workforce,” she says. “Volunteering felt like a hopeful first step. What I didn’t expect was how quickly Center of Hope would capture my heart. It’s more than a job. It’s a calling. Every day I get to witness what happens when a community comes together with compassion, purpose, and faith.”

The scale of need has intensified. Center of Hope is now serving 127% more families than it did just two years ago. That’s an increase of roughly 1,200 families per month.

While immediate relief remains critical, leadership emphasizes long-term sustainability.

“Our goal is not just to help people survive a difficult season,” Markwardt says. “It’s to equip them with tools to move toward independent, stable living.”

For Madison Jakes, a former intern raised by a single mother with limited resources, that transformation was personal.

“They’re more than just a center,” Madison says. “They’re a little pocket of community.”

In high school, Madison struggled with anger after experiencing bullying. It got to the point where she says she struggled to look in the mirror. Through Center of Hope’s Jobs for Life program, she learned résumé writing and public speaking. She also completed computer courses and mental health classes.

“Before, when I would stand in front of people, I would stutter or shut down,” she remembers. “The mental health class helped me the most. It showed me it’s okay to not be okay. It’s okay to ask for help.”

Today, she says she can finally look in the mirror and feel proud.

“They pulled me out of that black hole and made me into the person I am today.”

The local church remains the foundation of Center of Hope’s model. Through partnerships with more than 60 churches, thousands of volunteers serve each year by stocking shelves, teaching classes, mentoring participants, and preparing meals.

And the growth continues. Although the organization moved into its 35,000-square-foot facility in 2020, it has already outgrown the space. This year, a second-story expansion will add classrooms and offices to meet rising demand.

For McKeown, the heart of Center of Hope is meeting people where they are and walking with them toward something better.

“This community shows up,” she says. “And when hope shows up consistently, lives change.”

HOW A PARKER COUNTY IRRIGATION & LANDSCAPE TEAM TRANSFORMS YARDS INTO PERSONAL OUTDOOR

RETREATS

REFRESH, RENEW,

REIMAGINE

After a Texas winter—however cold or mild—spring is always a welcome sight. As the famous wildflowers begin to bloom across the state, Weatherford residents may find themselves looking for ways to spruce up their yards and create their own personal outdoor sanctuaries.

“Spring is the perfect time to refresh your outdoor spaces,” says Noah Nye, founder of Top Tier Irrigation & Landscape. “We want homeowners to love spending time outside. It’s about creating spaces that are visually stunning and practical.”

Nye’s decision to open his own irrigation and landscaping business is backed by his personal history in the field. “I grew up in a large commercial landscape office, which gave me an early understanding of the industry and what it takes to do a job right.” As a high school student, Nye spent his summers installing irrigation systems. While attending college, he worked for large irrigation and landscaping companies.

Since opening in 2020, Nye and the Top Tier team have become locally known for creating beautifully unique spaces for every client in Parker County and beyond. The team often travels to nearby communities, such as Possum Kingdom Lake, to complete custom projects for clients.

Another one of Top Tier’s specialties is rerouting irrigation systems. While Texas residents often choose to install swimming pools to beat the summer heat, this construction can require the complete redesign of a client’s irrigation system. According to Nye, “These projects often include updating landscape beds, installing sod or turf, improving drainage, and completing masonry work, bringing the entire backyard together once the pool is finished.”

Though making a yard into a relaxing retreat can be a complex process, homeowners only have to make one call to set it into motion. “We manage every phase of the project so our clients can trust that everything is handled from start to finish without needing to coordinate multiple contractors,” Nye explains.

Whether it’s a spring refresh or a full-scale landscape redesign, Top Tier’s goal is to create uniquely beautiful spaces and develop a lasting impact around the Weatherford community.

“What I enjoy most about serving Parker County is the people,” Nye shares. “The relationships built through each custom project are what truly make this work rewarding. If you have ideas for your property, we would love to come out, hear your vision, and help bring it to life.”

Peace of Mind for Generations

Meet Thomas-Walters, PLLC, a Local Estate Planning Team Helping Protect Family Legacies in Parker County and Beyond

Investing is about planning a safe, secure future for you and your family. A major part of that is making plans for personal property and finances through estate planning. The experienced and knowledgeable legal experts at Thomas-Walters, PLLC, have a straightforward, uncomplicated process to guide clients through customized estate planning.

“Estate planning is deeply personal,” says the firm’s co-founder, Leslie Thomas. “A template can’t understand your family, your values, your assets, or your goals, but a customized plan can. That’s why Thomas-Walters builds plans around people, not paperwork.”

A customized estate plan allows clients to factor in their business and financial assets so they can decide exactly what happens to their estate and who the beneficiaries will be. A personalized plan may also be easier to adjust and adapt as life changes occur.

When clients come in for a consultation at Thomas-Walters, the team focuses on helping them understand the basics of estate planning. They take care to explain everything from wills and probate to the differences between trusts and estates. Choosing a trustworthy power of attorney, executor, or trustee to represent

personal interests is a major part of estate planning. This choice helps secure both the client’s and their family’s future, while ensuring everything is distributed according to their wishes.

While setting up an estate is a practical step for clients, it can be complicated, especially when it comes to variables in circumstances. In order to help clients thoroughly understand what their situation calls for, the ThomasWalters team takes the time to sit down with clients and review every option available, so there’s no confusion or fear throughout the process. This highlights one of the main goals of Thomas-Walters, which is client education.

As a public service to Parker County residents, the Thomas-Walters team often hosts seminars and workshops in local cities. These events give residents in Weatherford and the surrounding communities an opportunity to ask questions and feel better informed about estate planning. The mission is to empower clients and help them feel confident in their decisions, not to overwhelm them with statistics and legal jargon.

“Workshops show the difference between a stack of documents and a plan that actually works when a family needs it,” Leslie says. “They’re about community education. Clients in Parker

“Estate planning isn’t about preparing for the worst; it’s about protecting your family and your peace of mind.”

County are genuine and sincere. They ask great questions, share real concerns, and genuinely want to do right by their families.”

In a stressful time of grief, it can be difficult to focus on the details of legal documents and understand what needs to be done or what has already been arranged. That’s why an estate planning firm like Thomas-Walters is so helpful. They serve as a guide to clients and their families, making sure everything is handled without adding undue stress.

The way Thomas-Walters approaches the sensitive topic of estate planning also helps put clients at ease, during the planning stages and beyond. The team avoids using legalese and complex wording, instead focusing on learning more about the client’s individual circumstances.

And the Thomas-Walters office has a very special team member who helps add comfort to the process—Daisy, the office dog. Daisy provides a sense of ease for both the Thomas-Walters team and their clients. “Many clients walk in feeling nervous or overwhelmed,” Leslie shares, “and Daisy is often the first one to greet them, ready to make them feel at home. She helps people relax, breathe, and settle into the conversation.”

As long-term care costs increase, it’s more important than ever to plan for the future. Settling things now can lead to less stress on clients and their loved ones in the future, if long-term care becomes necessary. Customized plans for every family situation can also include things like special needs planning, which helps families set up funds for the care and provision of children with disabilities.

The main piece of advice the team has for those who are thinking about estate planning is to start now. “When people understand that estate planning is an act of love, not a legal chore, the process becomes easier,” says Leslie. “Estate planning isn’t about preparing for the worst; it’s about protecting your family and your peace of mind. And that’s something worth starting sooner rather than later.”

Plant You r Kitchen Garden

BACKYARD GARDENS OFFER FRESH VEGGIES AND FOOD FOR YOUR SOUL

A quick guide for simple ideas to start off your backyard kitchen garden. With endless health and medicinal benefits, combined with the beauty and enjoyment to be found, gardening is endlessly rewarding.

GETTING STARTED

• Plant your vegetable options right into your beds with flowers, the pollinators (bees, butterflies and more) are attracted to the beautiful flowers and your veggies will easily and abundantly go-tofruit, living harmoniously in one bed.

• Every garden needs a rain gauge - you’ll be surprised at how fun it is to check. There is nothing like rain water for your garden. (This is optional, but definitely fun).

• Get your family involved. It’s never too late!

• Just go for it, our local climate can be weird and often extreme but don’t let it stop you- the most success and fun I’ve had was just going for it. Experiment and see what you love and what works best for you!

• In most cases, when watering, don’t water the petals and leaves, (especially when they’re in direct sunlight) try to water straight to the soil. All they need is water, nutrients and light to thrive! (and maybe a little love helps too!)

• Don’t forget herbs: Lavender, Mint, Lemon Verbena, Oregano, Basil, Cilantro, Parsley and more. Don’t be afraid to skip the spice rack and grab your seasoning from the garden.

What to Plant

Whether starting from seed or seedlings, you can’t go wrong with these options. Start with foods you know you like to eat.

TOMATOES: They’re delicious, money-saving, good for eating fresh and for preserving. Tomatoes come in endless colors, shapes and sizes. Plant them in a sunny location with well-drained soil, ideally in full sun, and ensure they receive consistent moisture, supporting them with cages or stakes as they grow.

OKRA: Okra loves our hot summers and full sun. Don’t wait too long to pick your okra, ideally harvesting them when they are 2 to 4 inches long. Can be eaten raw on a salad or best served deep fried. (The flower that turns into the okra itself is uniquely beautiful as well!)

EGGPLANT: Eggplant is a short season vegetable and a relative of peppers, potatoes, tomatoes and tobacco. It thrives in heat and full sun and can be deliciously made into baba ganoush and many other delicious dishes.

PEPPERS: Like tomatoes, peppers have many purposes and variations. Plant them in a sunny location with welldrained soil after the last frost, spacing them 18 inches apart, and provide consistent watering while ensuring the soil doesn't become waterlogged.

Flowers Bring Pollinators

Flowers bring joy to all five of our senses, but they also bring pollinators to our garden in order to ensure your backyard kitchen will produce lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. Not to mention they also contain health and even medicinal properties.

HIBISCUS:

Make sure your hibiscus plants, whether tropical or hardy, get at least 6 hours of sun per day in order to achieve optimum blooming. Hibiscus flowers can be made into a delicious tea that can be served hot or ice cold (and is a good source of Vitamin C). With over 200 varieties of hibiscus world wide, their blooms only last a day or two! Stunning in all shapes, sizes and colors.

MARIGOLDS:

To the surprise of most people, marigold flowers are edible. Whether used fresh, dried, or infused into various beverages, Marigolds have a multitude of uses in the kitchen. An added benefit of planting these bright and low maintenance flowers next to tomatoes– they help keep pests away from devouring your tomatoes while also encouraging pollinators.

ZINNIAS: PLUMBAGO:

These bright, colorful garden gems have many benefits beyond their beauty and ease of care. Along with attracting pollinators, and being low maintenance they also have medicinal properties. Zinnias have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, they’re rich in antioxidants, and the natural compounds in zinnias can help calm irritated skin and reduce redness.

Plumbago is thought to have many health benefits, such as its anti-ulcer, anti-oxidant, and anti-cancer properties, resulting from its principal chemical components, which are concentrated in the roots, leaves, and stems of plants. This attractive light purple flowering plant thrives in the sun, and has moderate watering needs. Trim and prune to suit your own preferences of growth and it’s a welcome, abundantly beautiful member of any garden.
