FebruaryLocal Love Love can take many forms. It can be your elementary school crush (I’m looking at you Teresa Paolillo). It could be your first real girlfriend/boyfriend (hi Dana). Perhaps it is your parents who did everything they could for you. Or maybe it can be the person you choose to spend the rest of your life with (LeLane) and the children you now dedicate your life to raising and protecting at all costs (I couldn’t leave out Ava and PJ). These are the obvious ones and just a fraction of the different types of love that could be in your life. Heck, I love different networking groups I am in and also many of you throughout our communities. As we were planning out our February issue, our “Local Love” issue, we kept all this in mind. We asked Aimee Laitman, the owner of Aim2BeYou, to contribute with a story on accepting yourself and loving who you are(definitely worth a read). We take you down the path of the pretzel and it’s “ties” to love (who doesn’t love a good hot pretzel?). February is also Heart Health month so we are telling you the tale of Wayne resident Michael Sibelski, the man who had a “widowmaker” heart attack and if it wasn’t for the caring doctors at St. Joseph’s, he wouldn’t be here to celebrate the holidays with his wife and two daughters. You never know. How about the love of an activity? You all know it is baseball/ softball for me. I’m not as good as I once was but I can be as good as I was, once (I love that saying). I also love what I do with Wayne Lifestyle, to meet so many people and offer whatever help I can. In this issue, we are excited to announce the second annual “Picture This” student photo contest. We had 200 entries in our first one. Let’s double that this time. Help us out and tell every high school teacher you know about it. Last, but definitely not least…the love of food. It wouldn’t be February without a romantic meal you’re your special someone. We brought you a great recipe for homemade pasta that I know you will love. I’ll say it again…love can take many forms. In part, I've learned to find myself through wellness. I exercise, I eat healthy, and I try to align myself with my passions and purpose. I moved from having a corporate job to giving birth to my son, then to eventually taking a risk and opening my wellness business. I did not love my body or my journey or who I was inside. I learned how to do new and hard things, especially when they're so scary because I'm standing up for ME, which I of course had to first convince myself that I was even worthy of doing that. I moved, changed my friend circle and my routine. One of the scariest things I could've done for myself was ALL OF THOSE! However, when you know there's better out there for you and you know that something is missing in your life (for me anyway), I couldn't turn back. I run towards the goodness and past the fear. Being authentically and unapologetically me is one

of the scariest things I could think of doing, but I refused to live any less for myself. I've tried to be the "cool girl" my entire life, but really "cool " is just a mindset. Am I happy every single day and motivated? Absolutely not. But on the days that aren't the prettiest, I keep up with my self love routines: exercising or movement of some sort, choosing healthy nutrition options, and trying - the key word is "trying" - to be more gentle with myself. What do you do to give yourself some space during the day? Self-love could be a hot bath on a Friday night with a book, it could look like a self-love date to a local restaurant. Who wouldn't want to take YOU out?! It could be a walk around a lake or coloring. (Yes, there totally are adult coloring books and they're fabulous!) Self-love doesn't look the same for everyone and it can even look different for you on a weekly basis. You can literally do anything you feel called to do without fear of judgment from others, because I know we focus on that a lot. I'm still learning about what behavior patterns I have that no longer serve me, but at least now, I'm transforming them into productive behaviors. When we no longer seek validation from the outside, the inside becomes inevitably loved. In February, the month where we celebrate love, let's encourage each other to look into the depths of who we are, and to embrace and wrap our arms around every single piece of the real YOU. An Old Twist On Romance When you think about symbols of love, it won’t take long for you to imagine the biggest ones – hearts, roses, rings, holding hands, maybe doves or swans, or even a playlist. There are others, of course, that aren’t quite as universal, yet make sense. An anchor, a compass, a lotus flower. But what about one that’s hardly mentioned anymore but once was such a symbol of love that the phrase “tying the knot” may have begun there. It’s a simple pretzel.

Back in the 17th Century, pretzels were a common symbol of love in some European countries. In Switzerland, royal couples would exchange pretzels on their wedding day as a sign of eternity and their intertwined life. We asked James Crowley, manager of the Philly Pretzel Factory in Wayne, why pretzels remain a symbol of love for him today. “When they first were made by the monks in Europe, the called them ‘pretiola,’ which in Latin means ‘little reward.’ They’d give them out to children for saying their prayers, because they looked like arms crossed in prayer. When you get down to it, pretzels are a pretty simple recipe: flour, water, salt, and yeast. Love’s a pretty simple recipe also. It happened on a Sunday. Mike Sibilski was at home in Wayne, in his kitchen with his 21-year-old daughter, Julianna, when he felt a throbbing pain in his arms. Mike was having a heart attack. The sudden pain in his arms was out of the blue. He never felt any symptoms leading up to it, so it would've been easy to wait it out to see if it passed. What he did next made all the difference. Had he decided to simply lie down for a while to rest instead of telling his wife maybe they should go to the hospital, he’d be gone. There would be no watching his daughter graduate from college. No walking either Julianna or her 24-year-old sister, Cassie, down the aisle. No growing old with Anne. The “widowmaker” cardiac event he was having would’ve seen to that, without mercy. Instead, they headed straight to St. Joseph’s University Medical Center, for a rapid diagnosis and treatment within their state-of-the-art catheterization lab. It was on this mammoth machine that he had his stent inserted, saving his life. "The minute we arrived they jumped into action. So organized and methodical from the start. They were all so communicative throughout the process and you could really feel their concern for you. And I was very impressed - and relieved - at how painless it all was, despite the condition I was in," Mike explains. This catheterization lab provides doctors with a full-body image, showing details down to the vascular level, which allows them to see exactly where in the body a blockage could be. And in the case of a cardiac event, that’s crucial. While Mike was treated for his cardiac event in Paterson, Wayne now boasts a cutting-edge cath lab of their own, used primarily for diagnostic purposes, with Paterson handling most critical care cases.

Wayne’s lab opened in March of 2023. In Mike’s case, his 100% blocked artery required the trauma-center care provided in Paterson. For Mike, and so many others like him, it was life changing. And, although the process can be done in a single day, St. Joseph’s care doesn’t end there. It’s just the beginning. Recovery begins with education. Physical conditioning and good nutrition are keys to getting your heart health back, according to MaryAnn Hozak, DNP, RN, NEA-BC and Administrative Director for the Department of Cardiology at St. Joseph’s Health. “After a cardiac event, patients are directed to our outpatient cardiac rehabilitation, where they are medically monitored while exercising and regaining heart strength. Mike has participated in the outpatient cardiac rehabilitation program right near his home -- at St. Joseph’s Wayne Medical Center.” “Our goal is to instill a healthy lifestyle for our patients,” says Evonne Greenwood, manager of cardiac rehabilitation. “We educate patients on the importance of safe exercise, proper nutrition, medication management, and psychosocial support, just to name a few. We are consistently involved in progressing each patient through their individualized cardiopulmonary rehab plan and inspire and encourage them to continue this healthy lifestyle once they graduate.” Their program also offers a community component for patients, when they are well enough to exercise off hospital grounds. “We have a partnership with the YMCA in Wayne so that after their outpatient cardiac rehab program at the hospital is finished, they can continue their exercise program. We’ll have a nurse there on site to give them some reassurance that they’ll be doing it safely and they’ll be monitored,” says Hozak. CONTINUED >

Through the course of the program, Mike lost 55 pounds during his cardiac rehab, impressed with the accountability the monitored program offered. It all goes back to the healthy lifestyle change that St. Joseph’s encourages. Their rehab program is one of a full life reboot, including exercise, healthy eating - and not just for the patients. “It’s not always the patient who’s responsible for cooking in the home,” says Hozak. Hozak. “We work with the nutritionist at ShopRite to help our patients – and their families - with their shopping to create a healthy eating plan at home. We keep the entire family involved when someone has a cardiac incident. They’re all invested, they’re all anxious. We support the entire family as a team.” In Mike's case, that meant something even more dear to his recovering heart. He's the primary caretaker for his mother as well, so not only was her welfare at risk had he not been treated, he now has an opportunity to improve her overall nutrition through this program as well. Recovering from an “insult to the heart,” Hozak says, requires a holistic approach to rehab. Procedures like angioplasty or inserting a stent may win the battle, but it doesn’t win the war. You have to address what brought you there in order to recover fully throughout the rest of your life.

St. Joseph’s doesn’t stop with their inbound cardiac patients. One of the things that she's proudest of is their involvement with the community. In light of an increase in cardiac events happening in sports, they’ve worked with DePaul High School to add baseline EKGs to their student athletes’ physicals. The hospital team is present The hospital team is there at every Wayne Day and many other events throughout the year to connect with the community. “We’re part of the fabric of the community,” says Hozak. “And the community is part of the St. Joe’s family.” She should know all about why it’s such a family. She really is a St. Joseph’s lifer – not only did she recently celebrate her 40th year of nursing while working at the hospital in Paterson, she was born there. what you need

2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting 4 large eggs

what you do 1. Mound the flour in the center of a work surface with a well in the middle. Crack the eggs into the well and beat with a fork until smooth, then work flour into eggs with the fork. Use a bench scraper to work in the rest of the flour a little at a time. When the flour is incorporated, form the dough with your hands into a rounded mass for kneading. Lightly dust your workspace with flour and knead dough about 10 minutes, until smooth and elastic. Cover dough with a bowl or plastic wrap and rest 1 1/2 hours, or chill overnight. 2. To roll by hand, flour a clean work surface. Vigorously roll dough to a very thin circle and roll constantly with even pressure as it stretches for several minutes until as thin as possible, almost translucent. 3. OUR SECOND ANNUAL STUDENT PHOTOGR APHY CONTEST After the smashing success of our first contest, we are excited to announce the second annual student photo contest. To be eligible for the contest, entrants must be 14 years of age or older and be high school or private school students (grades 9-12) within the Wayne, Fairfield, Montville or Towaco towns and/or school districts. Open to students of Wayne Hills, Wayne Valley, Montville High, West Essex Regional plus would include non-public and specialty schools such as Depaul Catholic, Essex Campus Academy, Al-Ghazaly High School, Craig High School, Benway School, Pioneer Academy, Lakeview Learning Center, Trinity Christian School and if there are any eligible schools we missed, they would be included as well. Each individual photo requires a model and photography release form signed by all individuals who are personally and substantially identifiable in the photo as well as by the photographer and parent or guardian authorizing Wayne Lifestyle to display and advertise the submitted photos. Photos submitted without a completed model and photography release form will not be accepted. Model and photography release forms will be sent to each of the schools listed and will also be available on bit.ly/picturethis2024. Content of photos must be family-friendly and not limited to any distinct subject. All entry photos must be portrait and not landscape and be submitted in jpg format with a DPI of at least 300 and image dimensions of at least 2550 wide x 3300 high. There will be 3 winners chosen in each of the following categories: 1) “straight” photography and 2) digitally manipulated photography. Students can submit up to 2 photos for consideration. Winning photos will be digitally displayed on social media and in an upcoming issue of Wayne Lifestyle. Maximum 1 winning photo per student. Photos previously entered are not eligible Winners will be chosen by a panel appointed by Wayne Lifestyle. Original digital files and release forms, must be sent via email to wayne@citylifestyle.com and are due no later than April 1, 2024.
