The holidays are here and, as the spirit of the season is among us, we often try to replicate what made the season feel so magical to us in our youth. The traditions we set for our own families often mirror some of what we experienced as a child- whether it is the smells, the sounds, the lights, the holiday activities, or a combination of it all that reflects that best. When I was little, one of our Barone family traditions would be to wait outside for Santa to slowly pass by on the back of the firetruck, handing out candy canes and giving hugs to all the excited children. But the magic memory that will stay with me the rest of my life was the year I was sick in bed with Bronchitis. There was no way I could be out in the cold so, my hero of a dad, seeing me so sad, waited outside and flagged down the Santa firetruck. Bribing them all with cups of blackberry brandy, he convinced Santa and all the firemen to come inside so Santa could wish me a Merry Christmas and hand me a bunch of candy canes. Here it is, over 40 years later, and I can still feel that same joy and excitement I did then, but with more love behind it. One of the newer traditions that LeLane and I have been sharing with the kids is decorating holiday cookies together. So the cookies in the photo above this letter were the best of the batch last year. I knew then I wanted to share them with you all so I saved the photos to show you this year. Special things can truly come from family traditions. Make sure you keep the ones passed down through the generations...and make a few new ones too. This month, we wanted to highlight the magic of the season and what our communities have to offer that helps spread holiday cheer. We also wanted to share ways to give back this holiday season. While this season can be beautiful for some, it can be painful and lonely for others, especially those who have recently lost a loved one. In the true spirit of the season, let’s take care of those in our community who need assistance or who are alone. My hope for you this season is that you feel love and peace and that we all remember to take care of each other extending grace, empathy, and love.

C a ke: INGREDIENTS • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened • 2 cups granulated sugar • 3 large eggs • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract • 3 cups all-purpose flour • 1 teaspoon baking powder • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1 cup milk • 1/2 cup Bosco Chocolate Syrup DIRECTIONS 1. While preheating your oven to 350 degrees, grease and flour a 9x13 inch baking pan. 2. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla. 3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Add to the wet ingredients alternately with the milk, beating just until combined. 4. Divide the batter in half. Stir the Bosco Chocolate Syrup into one half of the batter. 5. Spoon alternating dollops of the vanilla and chocolate batters into the prepared pan. Swirl the batters together with a knife. 6. Bake for 50-60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. 7. Allow cake to cool completely before frosting.

In a large bowl, cream together the butter and powdered sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the milk and vanilla extract until smooth. 2. Stir in the Bosco Chocolate Syrup until well combined. 3. When you think of the holiday season, what comes to mind? Many envision lighting the family menorah or tearing open holiday wrap to reveal an amazing gift under the tree. But unfortunately, there’s a solemn side to the most wonderful time of the year for others. The concept of purchasing gifts tends to create a looming feeling of anxiety and pressure for many around the globe. Each year, parents do the best they can to not strain themselves financially while still giving their children a memorable holiday experience. Families all across the world, even locally, are in need of assistance to make this holiday season a spectacular one. And luckily, the Wayne Unit of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Northwest New Jersey is stepping in to make that happen. Each year, Wayne’s Boys & Girls Club hosts a Giving Tree event that gives residents the opportunity to donate specific gifts to local families in need during the holidays. The families and children receiving the gifts remain confidential and even though most of the gifts tend to be toys for the children, the families are allowed to request gifts that cater to their everyday needs such as dish towels, sheets, blankets, etc. Families attend a special holiday dinner in December, prior to the holidays, which gives parents the opportunity to secretly collect the gifts they will be able to give their children during their designated holiday celebration. The event enlists a staff of local individuals to spread the spirit and ease the stress of the holidays. Dan Dipsey, one of the organization’s unit directors, reveals that there is a genuine sense of holiday magic behind this touching event. “Everybody coming together is really a sight to see. In a wild world, it gives us a feeling that there is still some hope left. It’s truly a wonderful thing to be a part of.” Local students who are a part of the organization’s Keystone Club help out with the event by organizing the donated gifts and loading them into family vehicles prior to the event ending. Although the event only lasts a couple of hours, tons of work and collaboration is put into it by the Wayne community, in particular Connie Venturelli, School Nurse at Ryerson Elementary School. The Giving Tree sincerely captures the essence of giving during the holiday season, especially for those who donate and volunteer. “People who volunteer don’t get anything out of this except goodwill and a genuinely good feeling that comes with giving back, but it always becomes their favorite event because they're doing something selfless.” Clearly, the annual Giving Tree event isn’t put together overnight. Donators, volunteers, and the staff of the Boys & Girls Club all come together to make the magic happen.

“A lot of work gets put into this event,” Dipsey reveals. “And it's not something we like to brag about, but it's something that really gets us going for the following year and inspires us to keep pushing through the cold days of winter.” Every year, the Giving Tree is able to provide over 100 children with gifts for the holidays. Local restaurants and businesses donate enormous amounts of food such as various pasta trays and pizza pies to help feed all of the event’s guests. There’s even some entertainment at the annual event for both children and parents. “We've had a local high school band come to perform holiday songs and we've even had Santa make some appearances,” Dipsey said. “We play games. It’s a good time.” The Giving Tree reminds local residents that there's always an opportunity to make a difference in someone’s life, especially during the holiday season. The Wayne Unit of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Northwest New Jersey is inviting the local Wayne community to come together once again for their annual Giving Tree event where generous acts of kindness continue to be appreciated year after year. Tips for creating the perfect board: • Start with the larger items first and build around those. If you are using jars on the board, place those first. • Be sure to have enough to fill the space. it is best to overfill so that the board doesn’t look sparse. Stack, stack and stack some more. • Use a variety of colors and textures when choosing the foods you want to use. Pick cheese with color and patterns, fruits and veggies that come in a variety of textures and colors and a protein that can make a statement. • Be sure to place similar colors in away from each other to help give symmetry.

• Walnuts, Pecans, Pistachios and any favorite nut • Grapes, berries, persimmon • Crackers

Place the jars of sauces and olives on the board first. Next place the cheeses on opposing sides. Add meats and fruits next. Layer in crackers, nuts and seeds and fill in any spots with extra nuts. Use fresh Rosemary or fresh greenery to add wreath accent in the center of the charcuterie board. Garnish with fresh cranberries.

Ahh, holiday joys. Timeless memories of caroling, goodwill, and Hallmark-moments of togetherness and merrymaking. Theoretically. It’s just as likely to be a panicked few weeks of Amazon sellouts, tangled Christmas lights, mall traffic, and travel-related migraines. If you’re lucky, maybe this year it’ll be somewhere in between. Here are some less-than-stellar holiday stories that might just show you that sometimes you just have to chalk it up to ‘tis the season…

THE GIFT THAT KEEPS REGIFTING “My grandmother was getting older and a bit more forgetful. She was never a particularly attentive gift giver to begin with and really wasn’t all that plugged into things. Well, one year she gave me a Christmas present she seemed a little prouder of than her typical dress

“After a long Saturday afternoon of setting up all of our decorations in the yard, we noticed that it was getting pretty windy out so we took a look to see how everything was faring. At that precise moment, our 8-foot tall inflatable snowman blew straight up into the air in a sudden gust. We found him four houses away, smack dab in the middle of our neighbors’ Nativity scene. Joseph looked pretty surprised to see Frosty as his fourth king.”

ELF OFF THE SHELF “Whoever invented the Elf on the Shelf probably didn’t have a dog. We learned the hard way just how important it is that they find a high perch. Our dog is pretty big, so one morning we found our now armless elf looking a little less than jolly in her dog bed. I guess the next day our elf must’ve gotten some better training along with his stitches when he went back to the North Pole that night – he never went near a tabletop ever again!”

IF ONLY WE HAD SANTA’S SLEIGH “It might not be a disaster, but I’ll never forget the time it literally took me 5 hours to get out of the mall parking lot one year on the Saturday before Christmas. Shop local, folks!”

AN UNEXPECTED HOLIDAY VISITOR “When we get our Christmas tree, we always leave it outside overnight in a bucket of water to get it ready for the transition to being indoors. Well, this one year we let our dog out into the yard for his nightly run around. Unfortunately, he ran into a skunk while he was out there. Not only did he get sprayed, but our new tree took the brunt of it. Unfortunately, we didn’t realize that until we’d gotten it into the house and it started to dawn on us pretty quickly that we’d need another new tree this year. We kept the dog, though.”

A QUICK-THINKING SANTA “We were new parents swept up in the magic of Christmas with our newborn, trying to do all the classic things that we could. So we took her to the mall one night to “sit” on Santa’s lap. After about an hour of waiting in the line, our daughter fell fast asleep the second we were next. Never wake a sleeping baby, they say, but this seemed like a good time to ignore that advice. Once we woke her, she proceeded to scream at the top of her newborn lungs and our holiday addled, new parent brains went blank. But the quick-thinking Kris Kringle told us, “Don’t worry - I got this,” and held our sleeping baby, putting a gloved finger to his lips to say “shhhh...” and she fell right back to sleep.
