As summer begins to wind down, children's carefree days and staying up late are exchanged for more realistic bedtimes and thoughts of the upcoming school year. Still, the simple pleasures of summer never get old. My children amaze me. I see them seeing the world. I try to feel the same wonder, fear, and excitement they are feeling. It’s so strange that they can somehow make me feel both young and old at the same time. I grew up always wanting a dog and never got one. Now my kids have been begging me for one of their own. I think I owe it both to them and that 10-year-old me to make it happen. I guess this will be the year. Our August issue is dedicated to the cutest members of our community— kids and pets. Here we highlight a local kid, Shahnt Madalian, who led the development of a software program that will allow all financial advisors to provide cryptocurrency to their clients. Me? I’m happy when my kids make the bed. We also introduce you to Dr. Fun Dad, Greg Rosenberg. Not only does he literally keep kids smiling for a living but he has also figured out how to keep his kids at home smiling...and laughing. Speaking of kids at home. We are blessed to know and honored to introduce you to the Sullivans. This Wayne family has opened their doors, arms, and hearts to children across the world. My hopes are by sharing their story, we inspire others to be the change needed in the world. Our recipe this month is simple enough that a child can make it but we'll all enjoy it! I’m talking about how to make the perfect banana split, courtesy of Diane Manganelli at Diane’s Dairy in Towaco. Yum! I didn’t forget our furry friends. To prep for a dog addition to the family, we visited Beautified Breeds where Alexandra Ciampa showed us how to properly wash and groom your family pet. When she says she treats every pet like family, she isn’t kidding. EVERY one of them loved her. Of course, providing some homemade treats probably doesn’t hurt. Lastly, we shared a few pages of "Puppy Love" pics sent in from throughout our communities. You might as well say "awwww" now. National Night Out in Fairfield The Fairfield Police department will be hosting their National Night

Out event on Tuesday, August 3rd, from 5PM-8PM, held at the Fairfield Municipal Building at 230 Fairfield Road in Fairfield. The night will include the rededication of the recently renovated Police Headquarters. In addition to the ceremony, there will also be food, drinks, law enforcement displays, giveaways, games, and an obstacle course. National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer and more caring places to live.

Chair Yoga Classes at Laurelwood Arboretum The chair yoga classes will be led by Patricia Engrissei, a registered yoga teacher (RYT 200) and YACEP (Yoga Alliance Continuing Education Provider). No experience is necessary to participate. Preregistration is NOT required. $5 fee per class for members of Friends of Laurelwood Arboretum and a $10 fee per class for nonmembers. The Crypto Kid THIS YOUNG MAN FROM WAYNE MIGHT JUST REDEFINE THE FUTURE OF FINANCE BEFORE FINISHING COLLEGE ARTICLE BY DON SEAMAN It’s easy to be proud of your kids. We celebrate their victories, revel in their achievements, and trust that we’ve done a good enough job that they’re going to be successful adults. We cheer when they hit a personal best for their swim team despite finishing third. We post Instagram pictures of their work when they win the “Best Artist Award” of their class. We take them for ice cream for their “A” in History. And then there are parents whose kid patents an idea before they’re done with school. Shahnt Madalian is a driven young man (he made Eagle Scout from Troop 108 of OLV in Wayne). He and his Quantify team have developed a fin-tech software system that “connects traditional financial advising tools to the crypto market.” Before you start asking questions of this entrepreneur about whether or not they’re going to take their business into an IPO, you might want to ask him first about finals. Shahnt is a senior at Fairfield University. He has a double major in physics and economics. The software they developed recently won the school’s Startup Showcase, an annual competition where five teams pitch their ideas to investors. The money they won will be used to further improve their system. This project wasn’t just developed to win a contest. It has real-world applications, and the contest will help give Quantify a leg

up to help smaller investors join the world of cryptocurrency. “For us, this wasn’t just a class project or competition, this was always real.” But the mentoring, particularly of Dr. Huntley, who runs the program, was “integral to the process.” “Originally it was going to be an app to help consumers invest in crypto more effectively,” Shahnt explains. “But after doing our market research, the team decided to pivot to financial advisors rather than the mass market. We saw a really distinct gap in this niche of smaller groups that really had no way of providing crypto to their clients.” It was a grueling process. “Hundreds and hundreds of hours, every day, weekends, from September to April went into this. It was a very long process. A couple of us are double majors. All of us are overcommitted and overextended.” Spoken like typical students who drop “fin-tech” and “compliance issues” into casual conversation, and who might just realistically change the world of finance. Right now, Shahnt is working on another project in his other love, XR. He’s looking for versatile, adventurous programmers to join his group to work on another new groundbreaking venture. It’s said that every astronaut who’s walked on the moon has been an Eagle Scout. Shahnt Madalian might be aiming higher than that. I wouldn’t bet against him.

Endure a grueling two-year process to adopt a child who will need multiple surgeries to have a shot at a normal life? No big deal. Spend another two years going through another adoption for yet another child (this time in Haiti) — and survive a gauntlet of bureaucratic hurdles that would’ve made Job say “never mind” as the world’s borders were locking down due to a pandemic? C’est la vie. In the Sullivan world, it’s what “anyone” would have done. But that’s not OUR world. We’re a society of camera-first social posters who ask “when is something going to be done…?” The Sullivans are the ones who simply do. “Mary Jo and I have known each other since we could walk,” Brian explains. “We started dating once we were in our twenties. We’ve always said that no matter what might happen in our future, we always wanted to adopt. So even before we were married and had our own kids, adoption has always been something we’ve felt very strongly about.”

THE SULLIVANS GO GLOBAL So while their future family had already become full with Gavin, Adanya, Julia, and Dolan, the Sullivans made good on their promise to adopt when they found their next Sullivan in China. Finn was born with spina bifida and a foot deformity that would require multiple surgeries. But with his sunny disposition and, like the rest of his family, a positive, can-do attitude, nothing stops him. He’s just a normal 9-year-old. A pure Sullivan. Like her brother, Grace was born under the shadow of a personal health crisis, born with a heart condition. Her adoption was a tactical nightmare. A pandemic delay in her being brought home from her rural orphanage in Haiti could’ve been disastrous for her long-term survival if the worst happened. But miracle after miracle intervened, getting her on the very last flight out before the borders closed.

The grace of “Gracie’s Army” carried her through and home to New Jersey. Finally, the Sullivans were complete.

THE HOUSE WAS NOT YET A HOME Now their home was full of Sullivans but the house wasn’t quite right. So they started over. This would be yet another yearlong process. This time, it would mean knocking down their house and rebuilding from the ground up. But even this didn't go according to plan. Partway through construction, a hurricane wiped out their progress and they had to start...yet again. Eight humans and two dogs shared a small townhouse while a new homestead worthy of such a crew was constructed. Twice. “We toughed it out,” Mary Jo admits with relief. “It was like living in a dorm for the kids. They’re so excited to be home.” But the dogs are even more excited. “Poor Rory (one of their two English Retrievers) was so stressed. She started losing hair in clumps. It was NOT easy for her. We even had to resort to using CBD oil on her to help calm her down.”

FAMILY, DONE RIGHT Despite their long absence, the Packanack neighborhood wasn’t without a Sullivan presence. Brian’s parents bought the house on the same street a few years ago, Mary Jo’s brother and his family live on the next block, and Brian’s sister’s family is two streets away. Along with allied neighbors, the process was well monitored. Family is everything for them. While the method that it took to establish their immediate family was anything but blueprint, how they are as a family could hardly be more textbook. Their family could be a study in resilience. Regardless of the situation, they always have an organic calm about them, guided by a strong moral compass. Aside from Gavin’s good natured trash-talking during family basketball games, you’ll never hear anything boastful from a Sullivan. CONTINUED >

“... every child deserves a family, every child deserves to know what it feels like to be unconditionally loved.” They’d never admit it, but the Sullivans — every last one of them — are role models. They’re genuinely the most Salt of the Earth people you’ll ever meet. As for Finn and Gracie, they’re both happy, thriving, and knitted inexorably into the fabric of the family. If the Sullivan family was a club membership, the waiting list would be a mile long. And this isn’t just hyperbole. A neighbor once said about them “I am in awe of their commitment to children and making lives better. The love that they give back to the world is genuine. A child adopted into the Sullivan family has won the lottery.”

Clearly, Brian and Mary Jo are strong believers in adoption and are happy to talk with anyone about taking their own adoption journey. Here’s why it’s such an important part of their DNA, in their own words: “Adoption reminds us that all life is precious! None of us come into this world perfect, all of our journeys are different and some of us have bigger hurdles and obstacles to overcome than others. But no matter what your hurdles or obstacles may be, every child deserves a family, every child deserves to know what it feels like to be unconditionally loved. The gifts that the adoption journey has provided our entire family has blessed us all in more ways than we can count.”

paging dr. fun dad! As a parent, the longest part of your day might just be the ride home from work, especially with a newborn in the house. It’s hard being away from your young kids. So when you’re together, you go over the top. Starting with family dance parties, of course. “Having a newborn in the mix for the dance parties is tough, but in ten years my oldest daughter will look at me with that ‘get outta here, dad’ look, so for right now, I’m enjoying every Friday,” admits Greg Rosenberg, the orthodontist dad who was voted “most embarrassing dancer” by two of his three kids. That’s really saying something when one of your children goes by the name “Dinosaur”. “We started having dance parties at my house every Friday night with my wife and kids. It gives us all a chance to cut loose a bit, get our blood moving, and even sometimes inspire an idea for work to boot.” He’s not kidding. During one of these sessions, his wife, Rachel, started to sing along with “Old Town Road”, only changing the lyrics to “Dr. Rose-n-berg…”. A parody music video on his practice's website was born. (It can be found here if you’re up for it :smileex p er ienceor t ho dont ic s .com / what-makes-us-different/) “Kids are always nervous going to the orthodontist, especially that first time,” he explains. “We try to keep that in mind as they come in to see us. As a dad, that’s what I’d want for my own kids, so we try to make it fun for them if we can.” As fun as it can be, considering.

“Whether it’s at home or at work, we try to keep a good amount of energy up. Playing upbeat music, having those dance parties, singing, joking around — nobody had to twist my arm to make that video. I was pumped! It was my staff that had to be talked into it!” Greg and Rachel are trying to stay ahead of the parenting curve. They’ve been prepping for the inevitable spell social media will have over their kids. They started teaching themselves TikTok last year, starting with a Halloween PacMan video that the kids will naturally one day loathe. But that’s not going to stop them. “Right now our kids are in that sweet spot of having fun with us without being mortified by it. Now with the new baby, we’re guaranteed at least a few more years of simply being 'fun parents'. A clean and happy Charlie!

I probably have the world’s only Labrador that’s afraid of water. Most dogs love it — you’ve likely seen plenty of videos of the canine joy when dog meets water. But mine? The worst thing you can say to him is “Charlie…bathtime!” So faced with the prospect of having to endure another tortuous bathing event, I called Beautified Breeds in Pompton Plains to let the pros handle it. Alexandra Ciampa, the owner of the shop, didn’t blink about Charlie’s anxiety. “You just take it slow if a dog is nervous” she explains. She exudes calm; there’s no doubt it puts the dogs at ease. She and her mom, Ann Marie, form a great team at Beautified Breeds. Charlie agrees. Alexandra confidently picked up my 65-pound dog and placed him into the tub. He uncharacteristically didn’t struggle. As Ann Marie was gently giving him a bath, she took her time and it was the easiest bath I’ve ever seen him endure. He didn’t even squawk when being blown dry. I was witnessing a canine miracle. And absolutely grateful for it. Alexandra’s been grooming for over eight years now. She and her mom are both certified groomers. Ann Marie followed her daughter into the business as she opened her shop in 2020, just the right time for all those pandemic pets who needed some attention. They love what they do. They’ll tell you as much, but it’s not necessary. You don’t go into this simply to start a business. You might open a yogurt shop because you see an opportunity. You become a groomer because of your love and care of pets. For Alexandra and Ann Marie, it’s their love. And they get to share it together.

In a crowded field (there are five groomers along with them on Newark-Pompton Turnpike alone), Beautified Breeds stands out. They’re family here, and treat your beloved pet as family. I’ve never seen such a nervous dog so relaxed. Each client who comes in leaves with a festive bandana tied around their neck and a homemade doggie treat Alexandra bakes herself (her second passion). Dogs don’t have an exclusive here, either. They’ll do cats there as well, so your feline family members will get the same gentle treatment as their puppy brethren. Sorry, horse owners, you’re on your own. She may be strong, but there’s no way Alexandra’s lifting THAT into her tub.

Classic BANANA SPLIT TO HELP COOL OFF YOUR AUGUST

For our "Kids and Pets" issue, we decided to remind everyone of a simple recipe that kids could make for themselves, the classic Banana Split. While it’s not rocket science to put together this traditional sundae, let’s face it - part of the joy of summer is in keeping things uncomplicated.

DIRECTIONS 1. Cut one banana in half, lengthwise. 2. Add three scoops of your favorite ice creams (pictured are Oreo’s ‘N’ Cream, Chocolate, and Valhalla Red Velvet. 3. Add your favorite toppings (Diane used chopped walnuts, sliced strawberries, marshmallow, and caramel, but you can certainly get creative here. 4. Finish it off with whipped cream and a cherry on top.
