An inspirational man has the incredible power and privilege of shaping and mentoring the young people in their lives to grow and mature in a multitude of ways. Whether they are a father, a coach, an uncle, or a boss, being a role model and leading by example can make a lasting impact on those watching. We can all probably think of a man in our life that has had a big impact on us at one time or another. Whether it was someone pushing us to be a better version of ourselves, someone who sees the best in us, someone we look up to for guidance, or perhaps someone we don’t personally know but inspires us by their greatness. We recognize the impact these role models can make in our lives. Anyone who knows me knows that my father, Frank Barone, is still my role model. For a man that has seen so many ups and downs in life, he only manages to see the best in me. He not only helps guide me through my own life journey but has also taught me how to be a better father myself. I am forever lucky, and grateful, that he is my father, my friend, and my hero. This month we are honoring men and their contribution to the betterment of our community. We are highlighting men who put themselves second, work hard and inspire others to do the same. Can you handle the challenge of Stumpy's Hatchet House?

According to the greeting card industry, all men fall into these seven categories: 1. Master grillers 2. Lawncare enthusiasts 3. Sports fans who never take off their baseball cap, even in the shower 4. Woodworkers who deftly transform a redwood into a sawdust-filled room using only a hand plane 5. Fishermen, optimally sharing a boat or river with their dad/grandfather as they both learn and impart deep life lessons 6. Flannel-laden campers who stare wistfully into the medium distance with a steaming cup of coffee at daybreak 7. Beer drinking fart machines However, there’s one subsection that’s missing: Those who do marginally dangerous things for fun. That’s where a place like Stumpy’s Hatchet House comes in. Stumpy’s is an incredibly macho place based in Fairfield where you can go and throw axes at targets. It’s sort of like playing darts with large, handle-based implements of death. But until you’ve tried it, it’s hard to imagine just how great of a guy’s activity this really is. However, it’s great even if you’re not a guy. Girls can weaponize as well as anybody here. In fact,

according to location owner Michael Metzger, they host more bachelorette parties than bachelor parties there. Consider Stumpy’s as a place that’s more social than a training center. It gives people a place to bond, to celebrate together, and do a cool activity while they’re out. It’s not just about throwing axes. (They also have non-hatchet throwing things to do there, like Giant Jenga, Giant Connect 4,Cornhole,Whip and Skip, and a Brunswick Shuffleboard Table to round-out the man-cave experience.) Think about it: how many restaurants can you go to when you celebrate your birthday? The adult options are limited. Stumpy’s gives you a chance to blow off some steam, enjoy some time together, and get a great backyard feel even when the weather isn’t cooperating. It’s BYOB (beer and wine only), but they have plenty of ice. Snacks, too. And there are plenty of take-out menus for some great local spots for a quick delivery for something more. Just don’t look to buy a Father’s Day card here. Stumpy’s has too much of an edge for that. “The best thing that I’ve built? I always feel like the next thing I build is going to be the best thing I’ve built.” You’ve already got the ultimate OLED TV. You’ve got your couches, your favorite chair, and probably all the things that you’ll need to make your man cave comfortable and high-tech. But that’s the easy part. What about the “wow” factor? Unless you’re particularly handy and have a great eye for design, you’ll probably head online. But that will likely be a disappointment. Do yourself a favor. Head to the Game Room Store. Their flagship location is right on Route 46 in Fairfield. You’ll think you’ve landed in Man Cave Utopia. If you’re expecting to find the latest machines that would make Dave & Busters proud, think again. Here, you’ll find some old vintage video games, sure, but that’s not what it’s about. Most things here are custom-built, from pool tables to shuffleboard, poker tables, dart boards, ping pong tables, bars and stools, and much, much more. They also carry a wide range of wall decorations and art, many with a sports theme, and all with a definitive man cave vibe. Second generation owner, J.R. Masters, joined the family business in the 1980’s, after his playing career in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization was over. He came here to figure out his next step — and find it he did. His first custom project was a dartboard which he built using pallet wood. He’s upped his “game” significantly since then. Nowadays, he works in high-end wood and metal, using many things that would sometimes go ignored. These “upcycled” materials can be nearly anything, including old industrial oil cans, reclaimed furniture, antique wheels, beer canisters, old parking meters, or even roadside metal guardrails. He can find a use for nearly anything salvageable but he primarily works with expensive woods. Black Walnut live edge slabs

are red hot right now. And he transforms it all into very unique, very specific art. The custom bar sets on display will make you rethink your trip to your neighborhood watering hole. They are the store’s most popular products. Most take about six to eight weeks to create. “Probably the most impressive thing I’ve made so far was a custom-made bar that we built in their home. That was a really big challenge to do on-site. But as far as the best thing that I’ve built? I always feel like the next thing I build is going to be the best thing I’ve built.” The store began as a billiards store in 1974. But it was failing miserably, so his father began bringing in other products like chess sets, backgammon, and other small games. While the brand extensions helped to right the business, they never lost their connection to billiards. To this day, they still build custom tables and sell every custom accessory you’d need to play. “There’s always a backlog for pool tables. We’ve had supply chain issues for the past two years, so it’s been even harder to complete orders for them,” explains Masters. “We typically carry a large inventory and would be able to sell that down. Replacing it has been more expensive — and taken far longer — than in the past.” While it would be easy to drive past a store called The Game Room Store and think you understand what it’s all about, honestly, this is the one place where the incredibly overused phrase “you’ve got to see it to believe it” is spot on. Once you see it with your own eyes, you’ll know why they’ve been there for nearly fifty years. It’s really the art of gaming, and so much more. Sometimes it seems as if life is like a tennis match. You feel like there’s always something flying at you when all you can do is take a blind swing and hope that you can fend it off until you need to do it again. When you’re planning your career, you might feel as if you have little time to plan and all you can do is react. To do it right, you might want to find a coach who knows all about that. For that, you can turn to Kevin Doyle. Kevin is the owner of Strategic Franchise Consultants, a company he founded to help people realize their dreams and take control of their lives. He’s essentially a business matchmaker. lot of factors into account. If it sounds a bit like tennis, that’s not a coincidence. Not only is that a big networking tool for him, it’s also one of his passions. Kevin and his wife, Robin, play quite a bit together. Kevin didn’t come into this with his own future laid out. He was a CPA, but he’s wired to be a people person. So in doing his own pathfinding, he discovered that what he was really interested in was helping people. After working with a business broker, he found his calling and it wasn’t “bean counting.” He got out from behind his desk and started working with people to help them discover their own path. This former Marine doesn’t sit still for long. Most days, you’ll find him participating in local history events or yes, playing a ton of tennis at the Wayne Racquet Club. “Grillmaster” isn’t just a backyard title at Modern Propane

As grilling season heats up, we start to hear that classic summer tune that is sung way too often every year; titled Why Won’t This Thing Work? Just like that, your backyard barbeque has ground to a halt. You’re either out of propane (if you’re lucky), or worse, your grill is kaput. So as you grumble your way inside to put away all your carefully prepared cookout food and pivot to yet another pasta night, you make a mental note to pick up a new grill the next time you head out to get your garden supplies. What if there were a better way? Well, Doug Fleischer could be the superhero of your summer. At least the savior of your barbeque season. As owner of Modern Propane, he’s seen every possible grill issue that comes up. Pete’s House Cured Sous Vide Whole Chicken ARTICLE BY DON SEAMAN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY DON SEAMAN Chicken is anything but boring at Pete’s Meats. With just a few ingredients (and a little time), you can have a spectacularly flavored chicken that will turn heads. This month’s recipe comes courtesy of Pete’s Meats in Wayne.

INGREDIENTS • 3 whole chicken • 7.5 ounces white sugar • 3/4 teaspoon curing salt • 2.5 tablespoon kosher salt • 1.5 teaspoon black peppercorn • 2 bay leaves • 1.5 quart hot water • 1.5 quart ice water • 1/2 lemon DIRECTIONS 1. Split chickens & remove backbone 2. Start with hot water & combine all ingredients above to create the brine. Finish with cold ice water (stir continuously) 3. Put chicken in brine then refrigerate for 24 hours 4. Preheat your oven to 425 degrees 5. Remove chicken from brine & place on wire cooking rack. 6. Roast chicken for approximately 20 minutes until internal temp is 165 degrees 7. Cool chicken down in the refrigerator to 35 degrees. 8. Package chicken in a sous vide bag & vacuum seal. 9. Sous Vide chicken for 4 hours @ 165 degrees. 10. Remove chicken from bag & grill for 1 minute per side basting both sides with Pete’s lemon honey glaze. 11. Savor each bite and afterwards write a thank you email to Wayne Lifestyle for giving you this recipe!
