Our May issue is dedicated to celebrating the women in our lives. As I reflect on the different women in my life, I am thankful for each one and the impact they have made. One of the best qualities a woman can possess is having confidence in herself, but at the same time being able to see the beauty and talent in other women and call out greatness in them, too. Women celebrating women and encouraging each other to succeed rather than competing with each other is so beautiful and rewarding. Encouraging the people in our own life can be something that comes naturally to do, but the impact of intentionally looking for ways to build up those in our greater community is so powerful. We all want to be seen, and when we share encouragement with those around us, barriers break down and warmth follows. As we worked on this issue to bring you stories of remarkable women, we found ourselves wanting to tell our own stories of truly special women who have affected and molded our lives. That is why we brought you two bonus articles this month: The Moms Of My Life and Celebrating The Women In My Life. We hope they lead you down a similar path and drive you to express the love and thanks to the women who really made it all possible. We even provided you with a special drink recipe that you can make for them because, well, they deserve it. And if that’s not enough, we have a short gift guide here with some ideas on something you can pick up for them. Better yet, go together! In this month’s issue, we are sharing stories of women who have made their mark in our community in one way or another. We are also recognizing a few local entrepreneurs and women who are finding ways to give back to our community which has left me inspired. If it's time for your own entrepreneurial spirit to take flight, we compiled a special list of the Best Work From Home Businesses for Busy Moms. In a world that thrives on competition, let’s take time to encourage each other, appreciate the beauty in everyone and lift each other up, perhaps even a stranger. I also encourage you to take time to reflect on the inspirational women in your own life and reach out to thank them for the impact they’ve had on you... You won’t regret it.

THE NOBLEWOMEN

ARTICLE BY DON SEAMAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOHN AGNELLO

Five amazing women dream of a better world - and are doing something about it.

Catherine

Catherine Rabidis has been saving the world since she was 23. Ironically, she didn’t find her true purpose for doing that until she left her job working overseas for the federal government, taking on global issues. Now she’s making an immediate impact on the world on a far more personal level by providing life, disability and long-term care insurance. Along with a colleague, Catherine began reaching out to people in low-income communities who typically don’t have access to financial advice. “Anyone can participate in the system. It’s not just for wealthy people, or middle class people,” she says. After going to an inner-city church and talking to people after the service, she found something that was disturbing to her. “People were being exploited, even within their own communities.” For Catherine, it’s a matter of trust. What starts out in bringing people information, contacts, and resources for improving their financial lives opens it up to so much more. The people she helps become family. People invite her into their homes and lives. She’s gotten pictures at 4AM of newborns. When that happens, she knows she’s made a difference.

Moms Making a Special Difference Ethan with Pam

Recently, Terriann LoVerde from Accentuate with LoVe brought together two moms she knows who are dealing with similar circumstances of raising children with autism. Terriann felt that these women should know each other for all the good that they’re each doing.

Being a parent is said to be the hardest — and the best — job you can ever have. It’s a lifetime of highs and lows, of unforeseen challenges that can often seem overwhelming, even when everything is following a normal path. But what happens when the path isn’t so straightforward? For Amy Goldberg and Pam Donovan, their families had to take a different path. As parents of children with special needs, they would come to find that there were societal roadblocks that would make their transition to adulthood a nightmare. But these were not moms who were going to let that stop them, or keep their children from proving that they aren’t simply people with special needs — they’re special people.

WHAT STARTED WITH THEIR SONS IS NOW RESHAPING THEIR COMMUNITY ARTICLE BY DON SEAMAN

Jeremy with Amy

When Amy enrolled her three-year-old son, Jeremy (who was diagnosed with autism) in a public school setting for children with special needs, she quickly found out that it was not what he needed. They had to find an out-of-district option. But even that was a temporary solution. Once they turn 21 they are out of the program that has provided them with a consistent support and skill acquisition to help them build independence — and then they have nowhere to go. “Once they age out, they fall off the cliff. There’s no more funding from the school districts. And for a program that costs nearly $400 a day, it’s just not something that most families can take on.” Enter New Beginnings for Tomorrow. Seven years ago, Amy became their first employee as their head of fundraising for a facility that now serves 80 families with a lifetime of care for those with developmental disabilities. She’s found her calling, making sure that all people with developmental needs can find a place where they can thrive. For Pam, her moment of discovery came as she went to enroll her son, Ethan — also diagnosed with autism — in a program that promised hands-on learning and skill acquisition. Then she saw what came with it. “They sat them in a room and played a CD. That’s it.”, she said about their music program. That was enough to show her that he needed more. She also realized that there were no “normal” milestones in our culture for people with special needs. So she set upon an entrepreneurial path creating some for her son and others like him. Pam would go on to found Ethan and the Bean, a Little Falls coffee shop staffed by people with developmental disabilities. There, the workers learn valuable life skills and the community gets to experience a direct connection with these special people. She’s doing this for the greater good. Families who find themselves in these circumstances are instantly required to be untrained experts in an area that has no manual. For Amy and Pam, they’re taking that challenge head-on. They’re moms who just won’t quit.

“The burden always comes back to the parents. You’re always in that “fight or flight mode”, so you stay there. I’m trying to get out of that so I can be a visionary, not just for Ethan, but for others like him.” MAY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C O M / WAY N E

The Paloma:

A S OU T H OF T HE BORDER DRINK FOR BRUNCH WOMAN MADE, WOMAN OWNED DOÑA VEGA MEZCAL LIVENS UP YOUR BRUNCH TABLE

A Paloma made with Doña Vega Mezcal offers a break from that tired Margarita for your next boozy brunch. Doña Vega is founded and produced by a group of women who believe they have created the perfect mezcal.

INGREDIENTS • 2 ounces Doña Vega Mezcal • 3/4 ounce triple sec • 3 ounces grapefruit juice, freshly squeezed • 1 ounce lime juice, freshly squeezed • Club soda • Ice • Grapefruit wedges

DIRECTIONS 1. Add ice to the cocktail shaker. 2. Pour in the mezcal, triple sec, grapefruit juice, and lime juice. • Shake vigorously for 15 seconds. 3. Add ice to a highball or tumbler cocktail glass (a Nick and Nora glass adds a sophisticated touch). Strain the cocktail into the glass. 3. Add a splash of club soda on top. Slice a tiny slit into your grapefruit or lime wedge and perch on the glass for a garnish. A salted (or even sugared) rim is optional, or even a sprig of rosemary or mint! THE BEST WORK FROM HOME BUSINESSES FOR BUSY MOMS ARTICLE BY HAILEY SPINKS

After All, You’re Already The Master Of Multitasking Nobody quite understands just how time-consuming it is to be a parent unless of course you are blessed with the opportunity to be one. Yet, as we get older, it’s important that we remember to prioritize ourselves in the process. Working from home can be a huge help to household finances, but it can also be an opportunity to find something you love doing, without having to sacrifice precious family time. So, let’s get into five lucrative work-fromhome jobs that can help you make some extra cash AND expand your skills in the process.

START A VIRTUAL TRAINER FRANCHISE!

Do you have a special eye for grammar mistakes? Or maybe you were a total English nerd in school? Take your skills and turn them into a side hustle. With the age of digital marketing upon us, companies need content creators and proofreaders now more than ever before. Proofreading, copywriting, blogging, and managing social media accounts are just a few of the opportunities you can explore to start your own freelance business. The best part? You get to be your own boss and choose your own hours.

The key to this business is to understand you are running the business and NOT doing the training. This franchise brings technology, fitness, and business together by providing you with the necessary technology and know-how in order to start your own online personal training business. We are told the software and technology essentially runs it all. Our Zoom-based life for the last 2 years has shown the ease and benefits of partaking in online activities. With less than 30 franchises and an industry ready to explode, this could very well be the right time to sell online courses, livestream training sessions, and charge subscriptions for your own business. The startup can range between $50k - $85k. For more info, contact Kevin Doyle at kevin@sfcnj.com.

OWN YOUR OWN MEDICAL BILLING FRANCHISE!

BECOME A COMPANY’S MOST VITAL ASSET!

The perfect job for someone anchored to the home. The franchisor will help get you your medical billing certification and provide training and support to help you learn your craft and acquire clients. Certification only takes 5-12 weeks (depending on the time you can devote each week). The franchise only costs about $50k but they claim many local owners can earn 6 figure incomes with 3-5 clients. For more info, contact Kevin Doyle at kevin@sfcnj.com.

Being a virtual assistant has become an extremely popular and tremendously important part of an organization. With the global pandemic changing the way we define work; companies have begun to realize that they can outsource a lot of what they need to get done without having to drag people into the office. If you’re organized and great at communicating, do some research and see what companies are hiring virtual assistants— it’s more than you think. With the world that we live in, work-from-home opportunities are not few and far between. There are so many ways to connect with new people and find work that fulfills you beyond filling your pockets. You just have to do a little digging!

BECOME A FREELANCER!

SELL YOUR HOBBY ON ETSY! Dive into what makes you truly happy and turn your passions into a lucrative business through creating and selling crafted products. You can etch personalized phrases onto

28

But what you might not realize is just how unbelievable the urban experience is in this extraordinary city set at the foot of the Rocky Mountains, including a booming collection of sleek boutique hotels, one of the most engaging arts and live music scenes anywhere, and elevated restaurants, shops, museums and galleries amid lively and diverse neighborhood pockets that will have you experiencing total fulfillment from this metropolitan basecamp. Our team of local lifestyle fanatics at City Lifestyle are thrilled to collaborate with Visit Denver to present a customized visitor’s guide and exclusive GIVEAWAY* to this mile-high destination. It’s an urban landscape complemented with charming, walkable neighborhoods dedicated to giving visitors a taste of why it’s year-after-year ranked one of the best places to reside. With recent recognition and rankings, such as landing its spot as a top 10 city in the world to visit (Lonely Planet), leading the nation in attendance at performing arts events and exhibitions (National Endowment for the Arts), a repeat nominee for its foodie and craft beverage scene, and home to THE most attended concert venue of any size anywhere in the world (Billboard), Denver is bursting with profound cultural and lifestyle experiences, and we’re here to round up our recommendations for you. One neighborhood that sets Denver apart is Cherry Creek North, otherwise known as the Mile High City’s ultimate luxury shopping and dining destination with the highest concentration of small businesses. A well-known favorite of the locals, Cherry Creek feels like a city within a city with its urban oasis atmosphere. Get your street chic and fun-filled soles ready for 16 walking-friendly blocks of shopping, pampering, entertaining and feasting. With ample annual events

Enter for a chance to win a 3-night getaway to Denver! to check out, such as the Food & Wine and Cherry Creek Arts festivals, you can pair your festival-fan side with high-end couture hunting at Cherry Creek Shopping Center, perusing Hermes, Chanel, Stuart Weitzman and Louis Vuitton, just to name a few. As you work up an appetite, prepare to drink and devour the exquisite fare that Cherry Creek offers with more than 50 restaurants, making it almost impossible to choose and most definitely requiring a return visit. Whether your palate is yearning for a farm-totable, multi-course meal by an award-winning chef, or a burger and locally brewed craft beer with a side of fries, you’ll find flavor profiles to satisfy every craving. One such sophisticated and stylish restaurant destination includes Local Jones inside the urban chic Halcyon, a hotel in Cherry Creek. Equal parts nostalgia and composure, this neighborhood restaurant serves up great food in a socially engaging atmosphere, offering brunch and dinner menus. Try the Colorado green chile breakfast burrito with a ginger liqueur spritz in the a.m., and take your turn at the pasta bolognese and ‘Tell Me I’m Pretty’ spirited libation in the p.m.

Step outside the restaurant, and you’ll find the only hotel property in the country that offers a Vespa to zip around town. Halcyon feels a bit like your living room with a warm and inviting vibe. Soak up the social atmosphere both upon entry and at the Elevated Rooftop Bar, and bring your swimsuit for the pool deck complete with recreational curling, cabanas and breathtaking views of the city. Map out your foodie excursions by dabbling in an al fresco rooftop cocktail with a mountain view, decadent-filled chocolates cafe-side, and feasting on lobster rolls, tacos & tequila, crepes and so much more in this Denver district. All of it is waiting for you to create your own local foodie tour to satisfy your epicurean side. Additionally, the Cherry Creek corridor boasts dozens of refined spas, salons, art galleries and boutique hotels in addition to Halcyon, such as Hotel Clio and The Jacquard Hotel & Rooftop. This Denver neighborhood favorite offers an entirely unique experience, providing intentionally elevated and customized services and local experiences. Beyond the charm of Cherry Creek, Denver’s culture of arts and live music are thriving and growing by leaps and bounds. Take Meow Wolf, for example. Meow Wolf’s third permanent exhibition, Convergence Station, opened in Denver in September 2021 and is a not-to-be-missed experience. This four-story exhibition encompasses more than 75 unique installations, rooms and portals from 300 creatives. It tells a tale of what happens when a Denver city bus crashes into a rift during a rare cosmic event and opens a portal to four converged alien worlds. It has become one of the most talked about and nationally publicized attractions in Denver. Likewise, the Denver Art Museum hosts its global art collections representing cultures from around the world, with more than 70,000 works of art in 12 permanent collections along with several outdoor artworks not to be overlooked. The eight-story architectural marvel stuns with its dramatic façade, in part thanks to last year’s $175 million renovation project that expanded and reimagined the campus with new, dynamic spaces to explore. Denver’s open-air Red Rocks Amphitheatre featured the “most attended music venue in the world in 2021” thanks to its fantastic and rare aesthetic, history, and milestone moments that propelled it into its status it holds today. Freely hike and roam this geological wonder on non-event days, but don’t miss an opportunity to watch a performance under the Colorado stars and see where The Beatles played in 1964 and U2 filmed Under a Blood Red Sky in 1983, an event that boosted the venue into the global spotlight. Finally, don’t miss the downtown district favorites RiNo and LoDo. Denver’s urban-vibed River North Art District is a former industrial mercantile area turned into an artist magnet—blending urban charm and

industrial revival with a collection of maker and artist galleries, breweries and bars, restaurants and coffee roasters, and street art murals surrounding you at nearly every corner. Be sure to check out Bigsby’s Folly for its roaring ‘20s-inspired urban winery experience. Denver’s Lower Downtown micro district, coined the Dairy Block, is a historic pocket packed with culinary concepts and unexpected craftsman curations to explore. Peruse the featured events, stay overnight, and eat, drink and be merry. Visit Denver believes that travel makes the world a smaller and more connected place. It brings people together and fosters interaction among diverse cultures. We couldn’t agree more!

Find an unbelievable urban experience in this extraordinary city set at the foot of the Rocky Mountains.

The Moms Of My Life ARTICLE BY PHILLIP BARONE

The word “run” has overtaken the word “set” as the English word with the most meanings. I would argue there is one word they are both far behind. Mom. Just say it out loud. Mom. The meanings behind the word “mom” are profound and personal. Just saying it can flood us with so many emotions. Ones that can cycle you back through your entire life. “Mom” needs no explanation. While writing this, I can’t think of any other words that I can say that about. “Love”? No, I love a lot of things. I love my family, I love my friends, I love the Yankees, and I love a good backrub. They are all very different. How about “hate”? Nope. I hate cancer. I hate being left out, I hate failure and I hate stubbing my toe. Mom. That’s my mom. I’m just like my mom. I miss my mom. Any questions about the level of meaning in those? I have been blessed to have 4 “moms” in my life. Jamesine “Jamey” Barone was my mom. She held me when I was sick, she came to every baseball game I was in and she taught me to laugh at life. Then I lost her. That was 26 years ago. I am almost 48 years old and even now when I have one of those rough days, I would give anything for a hug from my mom. Janet Barone is the wonderful woman whom my father married 12 years later. Janet has managed to make my father completely happy. Not only that, but has always shown such respect towards the memory of my mom and at first caring, then love towards my brother, sister,

36

O UR TOWN | L IFE + CU LTURE

and I. Unbelievably, Janet has become a second mom to me. Celeste Frank is my mother-in-law. She is the glue of my wife’s family…as most moms are. I sit and watch her during the holidays. I see her interacting with each of her three children and her 8 grandchildren and I love it. Somehow, she allows me to experience what it would be like to have my own mom around to still teach those pearls of wisdom to 3 kids who think they have succeeded enough in life that they don’t need her advice; even though everyone in the room knows they do. To see her grandkids run up for a hug and share with her whatever exciting thing happened in their own tiny universe. She doesn’t even know how important she has become to me. Finally, my wife, LeLane. The mother of my 2 children. She drives nearly an hour each way to work, every day, to make a company better that will never know how much she does. Then when she gets home, not only does she have to deal with me (not the simplest of tasks) but she then takes on meals, children, cleaning, homework, and a multitude of tasks that will all leave her with as little praise at home as she gets at work. Yet, she does it and still finds the time to laugh, play and snuggle with our kids. That’s so “mom”. Until I saw what she goes through every day, in all the aspects of her life, I don’t think I was able to fully appreciate a mother’s love. The word “mom” has so many meanings and it brings warmth to my heart and nourishment to my soul. How about you? Say it again out loud… “Mom”.

CELEBRATING THE WOMEN IN MY LIFE Shining a small spotlight on three wonderful women who have impacted my life so profoundly. As we close out this special issue devoted to women, I’m reminded that I'm extraordinarily lucky to have three women in my life who have made my heart: my mother, who created it; my wife, who won it; and my daughter, who perfected it. Their bravery, resilience, and grace astound me. It started with my mom. I saw her suffer the loss of not only my father but also my stepfather. She raised me primarily as a single mom, never once missing as much as a day of work for over 40 years. Throughout my life, she’s taught me how to rise up despite my circumstances, to keep a smile on your face and to live by the Golden Rule. She’s inspired me to persevere. My wife and I met on a bus. Jen literally fell on me as we were standing when the bus stopped short. She fell on me and I fell for her. And by August, she was mine. By September, the entire world changed in a single morning as we worked in Manhattan. We soon moved to Montclair to start our family. It wasn’t long before we heard the siren song of Wayne and moved again, two children in tow. Not long after, there’d be a third.

Since we met, I’ve watched this driven, fiercely loyal, independent spitfire become an incomparable mother — thanks in no small part to her own mother. She’s the center of our whole world, the most incredible woman I’ve ever met, and undeniably my best friend. I thought I was prepared when my daughter was born. We all think we’re ready for that seismic shift in your identity. We’re all wrong. This little being changed who I am. I looked at her that day in absolute awe. That has not changed. It never will. She once told me I “smelled like purple.” Now I’m teaching her to drive. Somehow, I’ve been a dad for sixteen years. I haven’t called her “pumpkin” for over a decade. There are far more important things I can call her now. Socially aware. Supremely talented. Impossibly beautiful. Independent, fiercely loyal, a spitfire. She’s a lot like her mother. I have no doubt that she could change the world as much as she’s changed me. Three remarkable women who each hold a key to my heart. I celebrate having each of them in my life every single day.
