April — Let's Explore
April 2022 PUBLISHER
Phillip Barone | phillip.barone@citylifestyle.com EDITOR
Don Seaman | don.seaman@citylifestyle.com
Spring symbolizes new beginnings. Nature reveals its beauty through budding trees and flowers, and the fresh temperate air invites us to spend more time outdoors. And just as nature must renew itself, we too must renew ourselves in spirit. What better way to come out of your winter hibernation than to try something new? Maybe something you have wanted to attempt for years or maybe something you just thought of this winter. Is it something you ride in or ride on? Something you do with your hands or with your mind? Is it just for you or can it be shared with friends and family? It may be scary but I can tell you from experience, the momentary fear is nothing compared to the lifetime of regret for never trying it. Our April issue is our “Explore” issue and we have dedicated our time to finding a host of activities for you to explore. Things you may very well say “I can’t do that.” But having done every single one of these activities in this magazine myself at some point in time, I can confidently tell you that “You Can”. Not only do we suggest various activities, but there is also an article outlining a fun day trip that will let you explore some of the beauty around us in different elements: on the water, in restaurants, and in antique shops. We also explored a little “life hack” that we are sharing in regards to the propane for your grill. This will not only save you money but make your life easier and safer as well. You will also see our cover story in which we explore Patewood Farm alongside the most majestic horse you will ever meet- “Q”. There is a multitude of diverse spots around our towns to discover, whether it is a new restaurant with a great patio to enjoy with friends and family, a hiking trail to take in the surrounding scenery, or a niche boutique hotel for a relaxing staycation—there is something for everyone. We welcome hearing of all the great places to explore around us. Email us or head over to our Instagram and tell us where we need to explore next. We hope that the destinations featured this month give you something to dream about visiting in the near future. Here is to a happy spring full of adventure, peace, and sunshine.

SADDLE UP FOR A DV E N T U R E ! JERSEY IS FOR HORSE LOVERS
ARTICLE BY DON SEAMAN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JESSICA ANDERSEN PHOTOGRAPHY (JESSANDERSENGALLERY.COM)
It only took the Garden State 190 years to designate the horse as our state animal. In 1977, grade-schoolers in Harrington Park and Freehold petitioned the state legislature to make New Jersey’s love of horses official. It’s only fair — not only are we the most densely populated state in terms of people, we also hold that record for horses. Statistically, there are four horses for every square mile in our state. Now if you consider that Jersey also has more of its area covered in paved roadways than any other state you’ll understand why you don’t see horses everywhere. But when you find them, you’ll see why they’re so beloved.

For most people, the closest they’ll come to horse riding is on a trail ride for a special date. But there’s far more than that to this industry which brings in $3.2 billion to the state’s economy each year. Because of all of the care and attention that horses require, this is more of a lifestyle than a hobby, explains Suzanne Marshall, Patewood Farm in Blairstown. “The ‘horse life’ is a very active, healthy lifestyle. It keeps us crazy horse people young and teaches young people about responsibility, self-reliance, and discipline.” But before you run down to the used horse shop to help your teen become more responsible, keep

in mind that the average monthly cost to own a horse is anywhere between $1,200-$1,500 — and that’s not including the cost of buying one. But horses can do so much more than help ordinary kids grow into responsible adults. A growing segment of the horse industry is in therapeutic riding, which can help those people who have physical or emotional developmental issues, PTSD, or are in drug and alcohol rehab programs. In addition to private lessons and boarding, The North Jersey Equestrian Center in Pompton Plains offers therapeutic riding with a certified instructor. Far and away, the largest segment of people who casually go to a horse farm are those looking for trail rides. Many offer extras such as nighttime rides which include cookouts and bonfires. Some like Echo Lake Stables in Newfoundland go even further. Echo Lake offers a summer camp for kids where they can learn all about horses in a very hands-on way. They come in as a rank amateur and leave trotting around like crazy, according to Kathy Leaver of Echo Lake Stables. No matter if you’re just looking for a casual trail ride or want to jump right into a life with horses, there are plenty of opportunities for “equine therapy” locally and all across the state. As Suzanne explains, “Whether you want the glamor of competition or the comradery of trail riding – horses and the lifestyle that revolves around horses is exciting and endlessly fascinating!”

LET’S EXPLORE SOME NEW ACTIVITIES! AFTER ALL... VARIETY IS THE SPICE OF LIFE. In our world of routine and responsibility, you may find that all it takes to rekindle your spirit is to simply try something new. Here are a few suggestions you may not have thought of.
1. Hiking “It’s the serenity of chasing waterfalls, stumbling upon ruins, beautiful vistas, challenging rock scrambles, wooden boardwalks, finishing another state on the Appalachian Trail. We have hiked for years together. I love our weekly adventures!” - Jen Rech “I love the outdoors and hiking. It’s a sense of peace and accomplishment of completing a hike; especially if it’s a hard one or out of my comfort zone. In 2021 we did 42 hikes — 256.4 miles!” - Melissa Kirz
2. Skydiving Nothing’s more heart-pumping than strapping on a parachute and jumping out of an airplane. NY Tandem Skydiving in West Milford or Skydive The Ranch in Gardiner, NY will let you see for yourself. iFly Indoor Skydiving Centers are a low-altitude alternative. FYI: Skydive The Ranch is where our publisher did his first and only jump.
3. Acting Lessons
“Taking an acting class is a surefire way to get more in touch and familiar with yourself. You become more self-aware. You gain a better understanding of motivations and desires,” says Jackie Reid, owner of one Hollywood talent agency. Give it a try to see what it can do for you? ATC Studios in Clifton lets you explore your dramatic side while keeping your day job.

4. Sailing “Sailing is a great way to bring peace and quiet into our busy lives; the simple sounds of the wind as it fills the sails, or the water as it flows past the boat can be very relaxing and centering, a perfect antidote to the stresses of the modern world. When you cut the engine, turn the rudder, and the sails fill, you feel the power up…the lift of the boat as the sail and keel slice through wind and water. All my senses are alert to every movement and sound, looking for what’s ahead. I’m alive!" - Jeff Hecht
5. Climbing “It’s really exciting to start a new climb and a really, really great feeling to finish one. I did my first climb with my Girl Scout troop and have been hooked ever since. Now I’m on a rock climbing team in Montclair with kids from all over the area. I am always ready to go climbing.” - Lily Nazarko
6. Flying Lessons “I fly because it releases my mind from the tyranny of petty things.” - Antoine De Saint-Exupéry. Learning to fly opens up an entire world of exploration. If you have the itch to take to the skies, head over to Essex County Airport in Fairfield. Century Air, Air Fleet Training Systems, and P6 Aviation are each based there and will get you up in the air and exploring in no time.
7. Robotics Club If you truly believe that children are our future, let's get them exploring their own future in the exciting world of robotics. JDroids' mission is to provide after-school STEM and Robotics programs for elementary, middle, and high school students. Team 7026 is the #1 ranked team in North Jersey and does all of their building at Maker Junction in Totowa. Go to the JDroids Facebook page for more information or email them at jdroids7026@gmail.com.
8. Fencing “Fencing is great for conditioning your core and helps improve your balance and coordination. But let’s face it — it’s all about the friends you can make. Fencers always have your back, even if they’re on a different team. And knowing how to handle a weapon is never a bad thing. But the best thing is that you get to imagine that you’re Inigo Montoya from Princess Bride while you’re serving up a bagel against your opponent.” - Julie Seaman

A Day Trip To The Delaware River Spend Your Day On The River And Your Night In New Hope ARTICLE BY DON SEAMAN
Face it, we’re all still feeling pretty cooped up. But gas prices aren’t letting us go very far. So how about a quick road trip that’s only about an hour and change away that you can do in just a day or two? A trip along the Delaware might just have enough juice to get your blood going with some rafting, kayaking, or tubing along the river. There’s enough whitewater to make it exciting and enough calm to make it relaxing. There are plenty of companies along the river, but if you aim for River Country in Bucks County (rivercountry.net), you’ll be in range to change into some dry clothes and head a little bit further south to the quirky town of New Hope. New Hope, in case you’re not familiar, is home to some unique shopping experiences that can only be described as “eclectic”: a bustling art scene, the Bucks County Playhouse, and a diverse enough list of restaurants to give Montclair a run for its money. Salt House, Zoubi, and Havana are all spots worth checking out. New Hope’s sister town of Lambertville, NJ is just a walk across the bridge where you’ll find more of the same laid-back atmosphere, antiques, and history you’ll see on the other side of the river. And if you get over to Lambertville, there’s a hidden gem tucked away on Coryell Street that’s perfect for an after-dinner drink called the Boathouse. It’s a place that is mostly known to just the locals. After a day on the river and shopping, you’ll find that the couches there are deadly comfortable, so be warned ahead of time — this might be the moment you’re happy that you chose to reserve a room in a local B&B ahead of time.

Jack Gas: For Grill Propane Delivery, They Kick Gas! Exploring Ways To Make Your Life A Bit Easier ARTICLE DON SEAMAN For every suburban homeowner who does any grilling outdoors, we’ve all made the same mistake — you get everything ready for your big cookout: burgers, ribs, veggies, tools. You even have your “King of the Grill” apron on. And just as you go to fire up your grill, it becomes obvious that you’ve overlooked one basic thing. You’re out of propane! After putting all of your supplies aside and getting everything back in the fridge, you throw the filthy tank in the backseat of your car and head out to exchange your tank for another “full” tank of propane. You might be happy to hear that there’s an easier way to be prepared for this. And you won’t be ripped off, which is quite the bonus. Easier is always good. But wait — what? Why would I be ripped off?

Well, when you exchange your propane tank, which can hold 20 lbs. of liquid propane, you are getting back a tank that’s only been filled with 15 lbs. of propane… it says it right on the label! That’s correct —when you exchange your tank, that “full” tank is only 3/4 full. We found a local company called Jack Gas that will deliver a tank exchange to you. So, there’s no trudging about with a dirty, potentially dangerous propane tank in your clean car. And they'll deliver your tank with the full 20 pounds of propane, for the same price (and sometimes less) as the three-quarters full tank at your local exchange. They can even drop off your tank whether you are home or not. It ends up costing you less, with less hassle. With Jack Gas, you can be thankful for your tankful. Call them at (973)745-0396 or visit jackgas.com Just something we thought you should know about to help make your life a little easier.
