LIFESTYLE LETTER
February - Love Is In The Air! February - Local Love Art comes in many different forms, and it gives us a glimpse of someone’s heart—a part of them we don’t see on the surface. We are all drawn to various expressions of art in different ways, and we tend to appreciate artistic expression that makes us feel something and that resonates with us. I have always admired the vast creativity that artisans of all kinds pour into their craftsmanship. Our February issue is dedicated to sharing about local products, makers, and artists in our area. As you read about a few local artisans in our community and their stories of passion and self-expression, we hope you are inspired to pursue what you love. After all, February is the month of love. With the hectic schedules we often keep, it is easy to let our hobbies, talents, and special interests fall by the wayside. We urge you all to read about Joe LaPorta, who is not only a fantastic accountant but also the organizer of the North Jersey Nomads Hiking Club. He makes sure to still find the time to hike with his faithful canine companion, Duke. We all have to be deliberate, like Joe, about allowing ourselves time to pour into interests that we love and that fill us up. As you go through this issue, you will find artists and love in many different shapes and sizes. From some of the great pizza landmarks showing off their heart-shaped Valentine’s pizzas (possibly the most delicious photoshoots ever) to 5 very talented local musicians you really should give a listen to. You will meet the amazing men of Aha! who will help your business find the love it has been so desperately looking for. Also, because we love you, we’ve brought you a special Valentine’s recipe direct from the Landauer Café in Towaco. So, while you fill your home with chocolates, flowers, and valentines (and perhaps college basketball) this month, remember to give yourself some time to do what you love. Find what makes you feel alive, and don’t forget to share it with us. And while you are at it, don’t forget to shop local and support our local makers and artists right here in our community. See you around!

BRINGING YOUR AHA! MOMENT TO LIGHT
Find the love your business needs at Aronsonhecht.com
Phil Aronson and Jeff Hecht are the backbones of AHA!, but it didn’t start out that way. The company came to life in 1984 as the Arthur Hecht Agency, founded by Jeff’s father, a veteran of the New York ad agency scene. Fast forward to 2012, when Jeff launched his own agency, borrowing the AHA! logo rebranded to the Aronson Hecht Agency. It was the first of the agency’s branding efforts. It certainly wouldn’t be the last. From a practical sense, AHA! is an agency that does the things that you’d think an advertising agency would do in today’s world: branding, web design, e-commerce, graphic and logo design,

video production, SEO management, social media, reputation management — it’s all there on their website (aronsonhecht.com). What you will not find on the site is the most important thing that they offer: their advice to you. “I was in the business of solving problems as Chief Technology Officer of a global telecom company. At AHA!, we don’t just build sites. We will offer advice to our clients as to how to improve things within their business. We look to work with small and medium-sized businesses and say, ‘look, make us your marketing department. We will handle all of the things that a smaller business doesn’t have time for, but desperately needs in order to grow and thrive.’” Jeff’s experience started with global telecoms in the long-distance business but saw an entrepreneurial new path to success as that industry began to wane. In addition to a hightech sales position, he also began a computer gaming store, long before the days of Gamestop and Dave & Busters. He learned website design for the new local business that he opened, pioneering things like live video streaming way back in 2001. It wasn’t long before others who’d come into his store took notice and hired him to develop websites for their local businesses. The store was eventually sold as the web design business took flight.

Phil Aronson - Chief Visual Officer
That’s when the rebranded AHA! was reborn. But his sales and technological wizardry would need a partner. Not long after, he was talking with his lifelong friend, “you’re one of the most creative people I know. Come join me and help me build this business.” Creative brainchild Phil had a vastly different path. He grew up in the advertising business as well, as his father was at CBS for over 30 years as VP of Advertising and Promotion. He was married to Emme, a former supermodel who’d graced the cover of Vogue, People’s “Most Beautiful People”, etc., deciding to leave the Madison Avenue agency he’d founded with his twin brother (where they worked with such brands as Bauer, Titleist, and Häagen-Dazs) in order to manage her career. Along the way, he’d carved out a path for her to become an influencer — before that was even a thing — handling her PR, her image, two clothing lines, books, and more. Meanwhile, he’d also become an author, singer-songwriter, and, as he puts it, a “life-changer.”

T R E N D SE T T E R | PR OFES S I ONAL S E RVI CE S
When they divorced, his new stage was about to open to him. Building upon his website acumen and activating their advertising past, the agency began adding services to support what their clients would need most. “A website isn’t a field of dreams,” Jeff explains. “If you simply build it, they’re not coming. You need SEO, pay-per-click advertising, paid search, social media management, so forth, because it helps our customers grow.” Wellness for your body, your mind, or your business is not a quick-hit, instant fix. It comes from a sustained commitment to long-term, lifetime success. And that’s what drives AHA! to partner with their clients. Keeping a business healthy is hard work. Jeff and Phil recognize the value that they have, the experience they can bring to those who need it but can’t manage it on their own. As Phil likes to say, “our clients become our friends — and we don’t let our friends down.”

Joe LaPorta- The Friendly
Accountant As Great As He Is, You’ll Love His Best Friend, Duke, Even Better 18
F E AT U R E | FIN AN CE + L E GAL S E RVI CE S
ARTICLE BY DON SEAMAN
Meet Duke. He’d like you to get to know his human, Joe LaPorta. Joe’s an accountant by trade and a hiker by choice. And for Duke, he’s the best human ever. There’s likely plenty of humans who would agree with Duke. Joe’s a gregarious man, friendly, open — not the usual sort that you’d expect to be an accountant. It’s his way. He says that sometimes he thinks it’s a curse. “I’ll be at the grocery store and I’ll make four friends in line.” What accountant could say that? “If I have to put words to it, my claim to fame is that I’m called ‘the friendly accountant’,” he admits. “I’m not one to talk about myself, but I’m very approachable and I treat people the way I want to be treated. I try to educate and be friendly. I find that there’s a lot of value when you try to educate.” This transparency doesn’t cost anything extra. It’s just Joe living the way he is. “But if anybody’s going to get anybody’s attention, it’s not me. It’s gonna be Duke. He’s a beauty, a Bernese Mountain Dog. He was my daughter’s dog, but when her living circumstances changed, it became a permanent dog sitting situation. Then we bonded, and that was just that.” Although Duke’s his roommate now, his three daughters are his world. “What could be more important in life?”, he asks. But now, one will have to settle for visitation rights with Duke. Outside of his daughters and dog, one of Joe’s biggest passions is hiking. He’s the organizer of the New Jersey Nomads, a hiking club that boasts about 2,300 members. “You meet a lot of people and it’s just a healthy way of living. And Duke loves it — and they love him. But I have to have an appointment set up at the groomer on my way home. If he sees a mud puddle, he’ll be in it. He won’t be brown, black, and white anymore. He’ll be all black — nothing you want to bring into your house.” Professionally, Joe’s carved out a niche in construction accounting as the owner of JLP Accounting. “The construction industry is my forte. I actually love it. You really gotta be up on it or you could sink really fast, even if you’re a seasoned accountant.” Construction has been part of his business for a majority of his 30 years in accounting. But it’s far from the only work he’s been doing. His local clients include sports shops, beauty salons, and landscapers, among others. So if you find yourself hiking some trails somewhere and a huge, (possibly) mud-covered dog wants to introduce you to his human, you might come off the trail with a new accountant and a couple of new friends.

THE
Music
MAKERS ARTICLE BY DON SEAMAN
Musical talent is everywhere. Here are five standouts from our area who you really should know about.
Ted Wyman:
Like so many, Ted started his musical journey after seeing the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show, and was urged to play bass early on. He’s played with a number of bands for many years, including one that opened for Vanilla Fudge. Recently, he's shared large outdoor events with headliners including The Allman Brothers, B.B. King, and Buddy Guy. His current power trio, Cold Sweat, often plays in the area, including an upcoming date in Wayne at the Greenhouse Bar & Grill on April 22nd. “I am so grateful that the passion I have had for music over the last 57 years is still going strong and has given me, my bandmates, and the multitudes of people, friends, and family, a glimpse into this driving force I share with so many talented musicians...and the magic that can happen playing together.”

What makes dining romantic? Is it champagne and candlelight? A picnic basket, a blanket, and a sun-kissed meadow? One of the most endearing scenes is of two dogs in an alley with a shared string of spaghetti. But romance is tactile, symbolic, and ideally, a hands-on experience. So for the month dedicated to amore, we’d like to offer a more modern take on it: the heart-shaped pizza.
