LIFESTYLE LETTER

A September Reset September always feels like a reset. Summer vacations come to an end, routines return, and many of us begin looking ahead to a new season. Our annual Style Issue explores style from several perspectives—not just what we wear, but how we live, decorate, and express ourselves. Throughout this issue, you'll find ideas that are practical, personal, and inspired by members of our own community. We feature local stylists who share why building a wardrobe around your own preferences often matters more than chasing the latest trends. A local home stager who talks about her design strategy and shares simple update tips for your home. We also introduce you to author Patricia Mousa Jordan, whose memoir reflects on family, identity, and the stories that shape who we are. One of the things I enjoy most about putting together each issue is seeing how many talented people are willing to share their knowledge and experiences with our readers. Whether it's through design, fashion, writing, or entrepreneurship, our community is full of people who are passionate about what they do, and we're grateful to help tell their stories. I hope you enjoy this year's Style Issue and discover a few new ideas, businesses, and neighbors along the way. As always, thank you for supporting Walnut Creek City Lifestyle and the local businesses that make this magazine possible.

LISTS

Build the Perfect, Stylist Approved Wardrobe Staples for Your Lifestyle As a personal stylist, I love helping clients discover their own unique style. One thing I notice is that so many “wardrobe staples” lists tell everyone to buy the exact same pieces, like a white button-down, black blazer, and dark denim. But personal style isn’t one-size-fits-all. Instead of focusing on specific items, think in categories. The goal isn’t to own exactly what someone else recommends; it’s to find your version of the pieces you’ll reach for again and again. These staples should support your lifestyle, reflect your personality, and make getting dressed feel easier.

YOUR GO-TO BLAZER

A blazer is one of the easiest ways to instantly elevate an outfit, but it doesn’t need to be black. Maybe yours is oversized, cropped, colorful, printed, or beautifully tailored. The right blazer should feel like something you’re excited to throw on over a dress, jeans, or trousers. Pro Tip: Layer a lightweight sweater tank underneath to add texture, or personalize your blazer with a brooch for a look that feels uniquely yours.

YOUR EVERYDAY TROUSER

A relaxed trouser is one of the hardest-working pieces in a wardrobe because it’s so versatile. Dress it up with a blazer for work or pair it with a simple tee and sneakers for the weekend. Pro Tip: Look for a pair that fits your waist comfortably and hem them to the shoes you wear most often.

12

T R E N D SE T T E R | STYL E + BE AU T Y

YOUR FAVORITE FLAT

A statement flat is an easy way to add personality without sacrificing comfort. Whether you’re drawn to ballet flats, loafers, or pointed-toe styles, this is a category where color, texture, or interesting details can completely transform a simple outfit. Pro Tip: Shoes are one of the best categories to invest in. Quality leather molds to your feet over time and often becomes even more comfortable with wear.

YOUR GO-TO CARRYALL

Your work bag should be both functional and polished. Look for one that’s large enough to carry your laptop, wallet, notebook, and daily essentials while still feeling comfortable on your shoulder. A structured silhouette often looks more elevated and holds its shape over time. Pro Tip: Keep a small pouch inside for chargers, pens, and other essentials. It makes switching bags effortless without leaving anything behind.

YOUR PERFECT PAIR OF DENIM

Great denim should fit your body, not the other way around. Whether you love straight leg, wide leg, barrel, or bootcut styles, prioritize a pair that fits well through your waist and hips and makes you feel confident. Pro Tip: Buy for your largest measurement and tailor the rest. For example, if your thighs are more muscular but your waist is

smaller, purchase the size that fits your thighs and have the waist taken in. Tailoring can completely change how denim looks and feels.

YOUR GREAT-FITTING BRA

A wonderful outfit starts with the right foundation. The fit of your bra affects how your clothing looks and fits. If it’s been a few years since your last fitting, it’s worth making the appointment. Pro Tip: Many lingerie stores, including the Thirdlove location in Walnut Creek, offer professional bra fittings.

YOUR SIGNATURE ACCESSORY

A signature accessory is one of the easiest ways to make your style feel personal. It could be a pair of vintage earrings, a printed silk scarf that adds color and interest, or a fun belt that pulls your whole outfit together. They don’t require much extra effort but can completely transform a look. Pro Tip: Don’t save your favorite accessories for special occasions. The pieces you wear most often become part of your signature style.

More Than a Haircut How Two Walnut Creek Stylists Help Clients Embrace Change Every few months, a young artist walks into Salon Hanover in Walnut Creek and asks stylist Christine Chou for something completely different. Something brand new. A new shape, a new length, a new energy. She wears sharply masculine cuts that somehow look striking against her delicate features. She doesn’t stick with one thing. She doesn’t want to. “For me, that’s a lot of fun,” Chou says. “It keeps me on my toes.” Chou has been cutting hair for 20 years. She and her business partner, Sophia Wong, met as apprentices at a legendary San Francisco salon, trained under a master who taught them to see hair as sculpture. Chou cuts. Wong colors. That division, decided early, became the architecture of a partnership that has now spanned two decades. “I treat her more like a sister than anything else,” Wong says. They have known each other longer than they’ve known their husbands. The duo moved to Salon Hanover in Walnut Creek in 2018, bringing with them clients they have seen for nearly 20 years. The salon they both trained at in San Francisco was known for a rigorous approach. Chou can cut with scissors and comb with one hand, a technique she says is now rare. Wong spent her apprenticeship mastering the chemistry of color. Not just application, but formulation. Not just what goes on the hair, but how it will settle, fade, and live over weeks. Technical skills are only part of the reason people return. The other part is what happens in the chair before any product is mixed or any length is removed. A client will sit down and say she wants a change. Maybe she got a promotion. Maybe a

relationship ended. Maybe she just woke up one day and didn’t recognize herself. Chou and Wong listen. Then they ask questions. “How much time do you have in the morning? What do you want to feel when you walk out the door?” “We really take into account their lifestyle,” Wong says. Sometimes the answer is a subtle shift. Sometimes it is a chop. “I love cutting short hair,” Chou says. When a new client comes in with a story and a desire to shed length, she gets excited. But she knows she has to be careful. “If it’s a client that I know really well, I will make sure this is really what they want,” Wong says. “If it’s a new client, I have to be a bit more cautious and really get to the root of why they want to do this.” They have seen trends cycle through and rename themselves. Baby lights, lived-in color, the wolf cut. After 20 years, they are less interested in chasing what is current.

“You need to think about what actually looks good on you,” Wong tells her clients. What they offer instead is not therapy, and it’s not makeover theater. It’s something closer to translation. A client brings in a feeling, an idea, a version of herself she wants to become. Chou and Wong look at her hair, her face, the life she has described, and figure out what that might look like. Then they carve the shape. Then they mix the color. Then she walks out the door. Twenty years of women in their chairs, twenty years of stories. “I’ve learned a lot of really great life lessons,” Wong says. “Talking to so many clients, things that I don’t really think I would have learned working in a different business.”

At Home With Rebeca Saint Meet the Founder of Velvet Home Staging

20

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | HO ME + D E SIGN

It’s after hours, and Rebeca Saint is relaxing at home. She’s tending to some houseplants, her smiling five-year-old daughter by her side. At the end of a long but exciting workday, there’s nowhere Saint, the owner of Velvet Home Staging, would rather be. Speaking from her Alamo residence, she shared her belief that “every home has a personality.” Her job is to work with it. Whether preparing a property for sale or creating a move-in-ready space, Saint wants potential buyers to experience that same feeling she has when she walks through her own front door — a sense that they’ve come home. Her passion for people and where they live has made her a leader in local luxury home staging. But long before she was transforming houses, Saint was equally passionate about traveling.

After earning a degree in tourism in her native Venezuela, she spent the early part of her career organizing VIP experiences for Formula One races, World Cup tournaments, and other major sporting events. The job allowed her to explore Europe, South America, and North America, where she developed an appreciation for different cultures, architecture, and design styles. That appreciation would later shape the design philosophy behind Velvet Home Staging, which has served approximately 600 homes throughout the San Francisco Bay Area since it opened eight years ago. Saint added that among the communities she works in, Walnut Creek is one of her favorites and one of Contra Costa County’s most vibrant cities, where homes sell quickly.

ARTICLE BY DEBBIE COHEN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY REBECA SAINT Ironically, Saint didn’t set out to become a sought-after designer. After moving to the United States 15 years ago, she spent time remodeling and decorating her condo. A friend admired the finished space and asked who had staged it. “I said, ‘What is staging?’” Saint recalled with a laugh. That simple conversation led her to take on small home improvement projects before she eventually purchased her staging business, which operates from a warehouse in central San Leandro. “At first I had no clue what I was doing … but I made it happen!” Saint does not believe in a “onesize-fits-all” design strategy. Creating an emotional connection is just as CONTINUED >

important as selecting the right furniture, she said. One of the most overlooked details is scent. “Fresh scents, clean carpets and subtle diffusers help buyers feel welcome from the moment they walk through the front door.” Although she has built a successful life in the Bay Area, Saint still carries Venezuela close to her heart. She paused to reflect on the recent earthquake there and expressed concern for loved ones affected by the tragedy. Saint strives to balance entrepreneurship with motherhood, noting that she often brings her daughter along to warehouse visits and walkthroughs. In an increasingly digital world, Saint prides herself on being fully present — for her family, her friends and her clients. “I like a personal touch,” she said. “I’ll show photos of a finished house that I especially love to my mom, my husband, and my daughter!”

“I like a personal touch,” she said. “I’ll show photos of a finished house that I especially love to my mom, my husband, and my daughter!” As fall approaches, Saint recommends simple seasonal updates rather than a complete redesign. Warm-toned throw pillows, lanterns near the front door, and natural accents like pampas grass can instantly create a cozy atmosphere. After immigrating to a new country and changing careers while building a life with her family in the East Bay, Saint discovered that home is not defined by a single address. Rather, she said: “It’s a feeling.” Visit: Velvethomestaging.com/

MORE THAN

a Bag

A BLEND OF FASHION AND FUNCTION 24

FASH ION F OR WA R D | STYLE + BE AU T Y

A purse does more than hold your phone, keys, and wallet. It quietly pulls an outfit together while also handling the practical side of everyday life. That balance between fashion and function is what makes a great purse feel less like an accessory and more like part of a personal style. Some bags are designed to stand out. A bold color, metallic detail, or structured shape can instantly become the statement piece of an outfit. Even with simple jeans and a white T-shirt, the right purse adds personality and intention. Other times, a purse works best when it blends in. Neutral tones, soft leather, or minimalist designs create a polished look without stealing attention from the rest of the outfit. These subtle bags are often the ones people reach for every day because they work with almost everything.

FASHION TRENDS MAY CHANGE EVERY SEASON, BUT THE ROLE OF A PURSE STAYS THE SAME.

Of course, style only goes so far if a purse is impractical. The best bags are the ones that fit real life. A roomy tote helps someone move from work meetings to errands without missing a beat. Even a small clutch has a purpose for evenings out when only the essentials matter. Fashion trends may change every season, but the role of a purse stays the same. It adapts while still serving a purpose. That’s why people often invest in bags they truly love. A good purse is dependable, but it also can make a fashion statement. In many ways, a purse is one of the few accessories that people use every single day. It carries necessities, reflects personal style, and can completely change the tone of an outfit. Whether bold and eye-catching or simple and understated, a purse proves that fashion and function can exist beautifully together. S EP TEMB ER 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/WAL N UTC R E E K

Q&A With Patricia Mousa Jordan What began as a personal keepsake for her children and grandchildren has become a published memoir for author Patricia Mousa Jordan. In her debut memoir My Palestinian American Life, Jordan reflects on growing up in a close-knit immigrant family, preserving cherished memories, and navigating life between two cultures.

Q: Tell us a little about yourself, the book and what inspired you to write it now? A: I was born and raised in the Detroit vicinity of Michigan. My parents were newly immigrated from Ramallah, Palestine. I grew up with a constant influx of relatives that my family brought over from Palestine. I grew up working in the family grocery stores and, upon moving to California at 17, built a career in the grocery business. Writing a book for my family was always on my mind and I’ve been working on My Palestinian American Life for about six years, mostly on weekends as I worked full-time. Q: Was becoming an author always something you wanted to do, or did this memoir come about unexpectedly? A: It started as a legacy book for my family; my children and grandchildren something that I could pass on but it turned into much more than that. I would read chapters to my mom, who still lived in Michigan, and share some of the stories with family and friends, and everyone inspired me to get the book published.

Q: What was the biggest challenge of writing about your own life and your family? A: The biggest challenge is knowing that your family may remember things differently than you, but it became very clear to me that this was my story and my memories, and that was OK. In the end, all of my sisters, I have four, have been delighted with the book and are so happy that I was able to trigger so many new memories for them. CONTINUED >

Q: Did you discover anything about yourself while writing this book that surprised you? A: I was surprised to learn through writing my memoir that many of my stories, some of the more challenging moments in my life, were very tender still. Writing a memoir is one of the most cathartic experiences, and I am so grateful to share my stories with the world. As I say in my book, not sharing them is their burial, and I have so much gratitude for the abundance and joy in my life and would like to leave that behind to breathe on long after I’m gone. Q: The memoir touches on identity, family and belonging. What do you hope readers take away from your story? A: My stories are stories of childhood, of resilience and strength, of tradition and family, and of living in a country while yet part of you has been left behind in the country of your parents and ancestors. My readers and reviews share how much these first-generation stories have resonated with them. It’s really a story for anyone who grows up into cultures and this is such a part of the American identity. Q: Is there another book in the works? If yes, tell us a little about it and when we can expect it. A: I am working on my second book, my Palestinian American Kitchen, which will be published in 2027. This is a book that everyone has been asking me to write since food has been central to my life. It is a book of Palestinian dishes that not only includes recipes but stories and tips on all the amazing ingredients in a Palestinian kitchen. It will not be like other recipe books and I am so very excited about its evolution. It’s the natural extension to my memoir. Visit Mypalestinianamericanlife.com/

Meet Walnut Creek’s Superstars! ARTICLE BY WALNUT CREEK CITY LIFESTYLE | PHOTOGRAPHY SUBMITTED BY READERS From cuddly companions to camera-ready characters, we received an incredible collection of furry friends and heartwarming stories. Meet some of our featured superstars.

Pip The force is always with Pip, a 5-year-old Labradoodle. She loves to steal socks, shoes, baseballs, and napkins, and her family gets their daily exercise chasing her around the house to retrieve them. At 50 pounds, Pip thinks she’s a cuddly lap dog who loves to watch her favorite TV show on the cooking channel.

André An indoor cat who follows his hoomans and sometimes jumps on their lap. He is quiet but very sweet, with an intense gaze you can get lost in.

Pip

Archie A thirteen-year-old Havanese who is gentle-natured and extremely intelligent. Dislikes being cuddled, but expects everyone he meets to be a friend. His joie de vivre (joy of living) comes from his conviction that he is the emperor of his kingdom!

Chloe Meet this one-year-old English Cream Lab who enjoys traveling with her dad everywhere. She is a realtor assistant, attends inspections, and is part of her dad's video marketing shoots.

Kenai André
