La Fontaine took its name from the great 17th Century French poet and fabulist, Jean de la Fontaine. Just like La Fontaine’s colorful imagery, our food is filled with colorful spices from France and Italy. This style of cuisine is called Provençale, the best of both worlds in Southern Europe.

The world of interior design is ever-evolving, and discerning homeowners with a taste for the finer things crave spaces that reflect their unique personalities and opulent lifestyles. Here are some of the latest trends that are redefining luxury living.
The pendulum is swinging back towards a more decorative and luxurious aesthetic. Dubbed "Grandmillennial," this trend embraces the rich textures and patterns of bygone eras – think lace, florals, and

chinoiserie alongside antique finds and heirloom pieces.
Liz Crivello, principal interior designer and owner of Collected Interiors based in Walnut Creek, noted that solid-colored furniture also takes a backseat as homeowners embrace a bolder approach, with lush plaids, vibrant florals, and handpainted wallpapers adorning walls.
"There were so many white, black, and natural wood tones that perhaps people were getting bored.
Symmetry Designs owner and principal designer Caitlin Campbell said people are tired of neutral, white rooms lacking interest, texture, and warmth.
"Many designers, including myself, have been anxious to see a shift from white walls and monotone color palettes for a few years.
"I have always been a lover of color and tend to infuse colorful pops throughout my designs," said Campbell.
Campbell said she often recommends saturated colors for cabinets, tiles, wall paints, and wallpapers.
However, those who are apprehensive can opt for colorful upholstery, rugs, window treatments, artwork, and accessories.
"If they tire of these design elements, it is easier and less expensive to change out down the road.

“It’s about creating a space that reflects your unique story.” said Crivello
"Warm jewel tones like emeralds, velvety eggplants, rose quartz, and goldenrod colors are (also) making a big comeback," adds Campbell.
Crivello recommends the hidden pantry for those who prioritize a clutter-free aesthetic. Imagine – a seemingly ordinary cabinet door that unveils a world of culinary possibilities.
This luxurious feature, typically found in high-end homes, allows for discreet storage of appliances and food supplies, keeping your kitchen looking polished and organized.

"People don't want to see the clutter on the counters anymore. They want it hidden, and that's one of the ways to do that," said Crivello.
Crivello says 4x4 Zellige tiles are taking center stage with their subtle sheen and beautiful color variations.
Zellige tiles, traditionally handcrafted, add a touch of timeless elegance to backsplashes, floors, and even ceilings.
While high-end, hand-made options exist, machine-made versions offer a more budget-friendly alternative.

While the classic all-white kitchen trend remains, Crivello said homeowners are discovering the warmth and sophistication of beige and cream colors. More people are moving away from grey-colored walls, furniture, and floors.
"Think less dated yellows and more about stripping and staining oak cabinets to reveal their natural beauty or adding a touch of elegance with a light whitewash," said Crivello.
Campbell said gold accents are also prevalent, and people can expect to see more warm finishes mixed with silvers and blacks in lighting, hardware, and other metal accents making their presence.
Crivello suggests dark and moody color palettes for a dramatic and luxurious feel.
Deep navy blues, olive greens, and charcoal greys create a sophisticated atmosphere, perfect for powder rooms, living rooms, and bathroom vanities.
Safety and seamless aesthetics go handin-hand with curbless showers.
This modern feature eliminates the tripping hazard of a raised threshold, creating a more streamlined and luxurious bathroom experience.
Crivello believes that luxury goes beyond aesthetics.

"It's about creating a space that reflects your unique story," she adds.
She also emphasizes the importance of incorporating heirloom pieces and travel mementos.
"I have some antique pieces passed down through generations and a painting that brings back memories of my honeymoon in Greece," she said.
These personal touches help to create a space that genuinely feels like your own. Luxury doesn't also have to be fragile. Today's discerning homeowners seek furniture that can withstand the wear and tear of everyday life.
Crivello says performance fabrics like Crypton and Sunbrella offer superior stain resistance, while durable wood and well-constructed cushions ensure your furniture endures the test of time.
She also emphasizes the importance of designing timeless rather than trendy spaces.
"Invest in classic pieces that you won't tire of easily, and personalize your space with pops of color or trendy accessories that can be easily swapped out," said Crivello.
More and more people are also coming around to the idea that fast fashion for homes is not a good idea, as many realize it's wasteful. The quality of something trendy often takes a backseat very quickly.
Campbell says many of her clients prefer to invest in high-quality pieces with interesting details, making them look expensive but timeless.
"Think stitched leather chairs, textured upholstery fabrics, and interesting wood frame details for dining chairs, sofas, armchairs, and accent furniture," adds Campbell.

ARTICLE BY LAUREL KELLAM
I’ve always loved to travel, but now that I have three kids, I enjoy traveling to destinations where we can learn new things. Earlier this year, we ventured to Thailand and plan to visit Brazil soon.

I’m an avid reader, and I mostly enjoy fiction. My favorite reads this year have been “James” by Percival Everett and “In Memoriam” by Alice Winn. What should I read next?

Our favorite local spot is CaliCraft. We’ll bring some games, grab drinks, and enjoy hanging out. I enjoy spending time outdoors. We spend a lot of time at Pinecrest Lake, Yosemite, and enjoy the Lafayette Reservoir locally.
My morning isn’t complete without a cup or two of coffee. We buy Philz Hazelnut whole beans for pour-over at home. My favorite spots downtown are Tellus Coffee and Rooted Coffee Co.

I enjoy new restaurants with family and friends. Our future issue will be on Food and Drink, and we’re looking to profile restaurants, chefs, and mixologists. Who should we talk to?

HGTV star shares her secrets to make a home look both beautiful and livable.

Tamara Day, star of HGTV’s Bargain Mansions, describes her style as “laid-back luxe.”
“I am a mom of four, and I like pretty, shiny things,” Tamara says. “The two don’t always mix well. I design with lifestyle and family in mind but with that touch of glam.”
This mixture of practicality and flare can be accomplished throughout the home on a budget, Tamara says.
When it comes to the kitchen, she says replacing the backsplash is one of the most cost-effective ways to refresh the room. Additionally, she says paint is the most inexpensive option to update cabinets, and there is a de-glosser on the market that will reduce the labor involved by helping paint adhere to cabinets.
“You can get a whole new kitchen with some fresh paint,” Tamara says.
In the bathroom, Tamara suggests putting up new light fixtures and wallpaper for a fresh look. She suggests using wallpaper on just one wall to create contrast.
“Wallpaper transforms everything and puts in a hominess factor,” Tamara says.
To give a new feel to the living room, Tamara suggests using decorative pillows as well as displaying design books and layering with a candle or other interesting object to create a sentimental focal point. She also suggests investing in good, quality sofas
and rugs because less expensive options will not typically withstand the amount of wear and tear they receive from a family.
Overall, Tamara says there is a balance between mixing expensive and inexpensive items and materials around the home, all without having it looking cluttered. She says every space needs something that is thrifted.
Tamara finds many people enjoy elements of different types of styles and have a hard time defining their personal style. To help narrow down to a preferred look, she suggests taking a hundred room images and sorting them into piles of likes and dislikes. She says when someone completes this exercise, they typically find a theme to their preferences.
Tamara has a natural eye for using great colors and textures in design. What is her approach to making a room look great?
HERE ARE TAMARA’S TOP TIPS:
Find a base color with pops of other colors.
“Every room needs a touch of black and a pop of color,” Tamara says. “The black will anchor it, but the color will give it life.”
If the home is urban, she suggests more bold pops. If it is a traditional home, use a mixture of colors. Additionally, she suggests using one basic color throughout a home with pops of other colors as opposed to having a different color in each room.
Consider wallpaper.
“Wallpaper can be scary for a lot of people, but there are so may wallpapers out there that are removable,” Tamara says.
Tamara says wallpaper adds texture and warmth, and she includes it in most of the homes she designs.
Layer with baskets, blankets and greenery. All three make a room feel cozy and add color and interest to a space.

Braids to Keep You Chic All Year Long
Braids are a great way to add style and uniqueness to your hair style rotation and have been a staple in hair styles dating back to the 3500 B.C. This historical hairstyle is here to stay, so we wanted to share some go-to impressive looks.

Part hair down the center. Create pull-through braids on each side of the head. Tie elastic at the end of the braids to create a ponytail at the nape of the neck. For extra volume in the buns, tease the hair in the ponytail before twisting it into a bun. Secure with hair pins and... Voilà!

Place a bandana on the forehead and tie it in the back. Create as many braids as desired in the back of the head, teasing the ends to avoid using elastics.

Part the top half of the hair in two sections. Create fishtail braids (or braids of choice) and tie them together in the back of the hair. Add a fashion accessory around a ponytail for a little extra fun!
