Rethinking What Truly Matters

When we hear the word “investment”, most of us immediately think about money. Is this a good investment? Am I saving enough for retirement? Should I invest in real estate, crypto, or gold?

Financial investment is important, and in this issue, you’ll find thoughtful perspectives from local experts who help guide those decisions every day.

But lately, I’ve been thinking about investment in a different way.

What am I investing in personally?

Some days, investing in myself looks like squeezing in a workout when my calendar says I don’t have time. It’s choosing long-term strength over short-term convenience, trusting that the effort itself is an investment, even before the results show up.

Other days, investment shows up in quieter choices. Putting my phone face down in the evenings. Turning off notifications. Choosing to be fully present with my kids rather than dividing my attention between them and a text that can wait.  Because attention is an investment too—and where we place it compounds.

As a publisher, I also think about investment in our community. Every story we tell, every local business we spotlight, every partnership we build is a decision to invest here—at home.

Strong communities, like strong portfolios, don’t happen by accident. They’re built intentionally over time.

Money, planning, and strategy all matter deeply when we think about building a secure future. But just as important is how we choose to spend our hours, our focus, and our energy each day.

This month, as you read about financial investment and future planning, I invite you to also ask yourself: Where is my time going? What—and who—am I investing in?

Because in the end, the most meaningful returns are rarely measured in dollars.

With gratitude,

April 2026

BEYOND THE PORTFOLIO

INVESTING IN YOUR FAMILY'S LEGACY AND YOUR PEACE OF MIND

When I spoke with Omar Chyou in February, we were coming off a volatile week in the stock market. Market conditions have long been a source of anxiety for investors, but Chyou, a wealth enhancement professional, reassures me.

He says that things are “generally good” despite turbulence early in the year. Addressing the common concern about market overvaluation, Chyou explains that the market is not “overvalued,” but rather “expensive,” depending on one’s outlook on AI and corporations for the remainder of the year.

When investors believe the market is overvalued, it often suggests a fear that prices will inevitably drop, leading to a market correction or crash.

And this is the kind of fire-extinguishing a VP Financial Advisor like Chyou can do for you and your family.

For Chyou, the goal is to build more than just a portfolio—it’s about building a legacy with families, fostering a level of trust that can extend to advising on major life events like job changes or buying a house.

He illustrates his holistic approach with a recent example:

“We had a client who was concerned about their daughter overspending in college,” he says. “The three of us got together and had a conversation about the negative effect of interest rates on debt and compounding interest. It’s about more than numbers; it’s about guiding their entire financial world.”

Chyou recently switched his focus from a broker-dealer model to wealth enhancement. This change means he is “held to a fiduciary standard,” which requires him to justify every recommendation based on a client’s financial plan.

This shifts the client conversation significantly.

“We start with in-depth financial planning and build an investment management plan that fits the needs of the financial plan,” Chyou says. “It’s different conversations before the investment piece. More personal.”

A common challenge he sees is the significant amount of cash many clients are holding, often due to market fear, a reluctance to take risks, or simply not knowing what to do. On this point, Chyou is clear: “Cash is a way to lose money safely. Savings yield 0 right now.”

He acknowledges the need for emergency funds and significant purchases but warns that holding too much cash can be harmful, especially when cash yields are lower than inflation.

“It’s important to seek guidance if holding cash doesn’t match your goals or if you’re feeling anxious about the market,” he advises.

For Chyou, working with a client goes beyond managing investments. It involves “truly understanding their finances,” including a cash flow analysis, Monte Carlo projections, and consideration of complex issues such as tax liability, college funding, and aging parents.

The objective is to “chip off on certain areas to be in a better position than [they] started,” and ultimately, to “give clients back the gift of time.”

Chyou can act as a financial therapist for some.

CONTINUED >

“We talk about the emotions around money,” he says. “I want to provide freedom and safety, and peace of mind, taking the fear out of investing.”

Remembering prominent market crashes, like the Great Crash of 1929 or the financial crisis of 2008, he points out that clients often feel “worse about losing a dollar than they feel good making a dollar.”

His team provides “emotional support for the market rollercoaster,” helping to “mute out the noise” of the market.

When asked about how he’s using AI in his workflow, Chyou sees a role for the technology.

“If used properly, [AI] can be an incredible tool to help streamline processes for time but not for answers,” he believes.

AI can help “analyze data and questions,” but he cautions that it can be misguided.

“Be aware that AI may get it wrong,” he warns. For complex financial plans and for privacy, the judgment and experience of human professionals are irreplaceable.

Chyou’s final piece of advice is to “get help earlier than later,” emphasizing that “time is our friend,” whether the financial need is to fix a problem or grow a portfolio.

Investing In Those Who Serve

How CCCFD is redefining support for the firefighters who protect the community.

The Contra Costa County Fire Protection District (CCCFD) has long understood that taking care of its people is fundamental to caring for the community.

From rigorous physical training to ongoing professional development, the district has consistently invested in preparing firefighters for the demanding realities of the job.

Now, through a new partnership with Restoration First Responder Network (Restoration), the fire district is extending that commitment to an equally critical area: long-term mental and emotional wellness.

Firefighting is not a job that ends when a shift is over. The calls, the losses, the responsibility, and the cumulative exposure to trauma often come home with the people who serve.

The fire district's leadership recognizes that preparing firefighters for the mental demands of the profession is just as essential as preparing them physically.

The partnership reflects a proactive approach to supporting the men and women who respond to hundreds of critical incidents throughout their careers.

Restoration brings a model specifically designed for the unique culture of the fire service. Led by Executive Director Sherie Mahlberg, a licensed therapist with decades of lived experience inside the fire service, the

network was built to address gaps that traditional therapy models often fail to meet.

Mahlberg’s perspective is deeply personal. Married into the fire service for more than thirty years, she raised her family within the rhythms, risks, and realities of first responder life.

That firsthand understanding is the foundation of Restoration’s approach.

Rather than asking firefighters to explain their world before they can begin healing, Restoration meets them where they are.

Its clinicians understand shift work, station life, chain of command, and the unspoken rules that shape firehouse culture.

Many members of the Restoration team are married to first responders or are retired first responders themselves, creating an environment where trust can form quickly, and stigma begins to fade.

Through this partnership, CCCFD firefighters and their significant others will have access to a comprehensive range of services.

These include individual counseling with culturally competent, licensed clinicians; critical incident stress response services such as defusings and debriefings; line-of-duty death response and survivor support; leadership and command staff consultation; and proactive annual

check-ins designed to identify stress early, before it escalates into crisis.

Centralized scheduling by staff who understand the fire service ensures care is accessible and responsive.

Deputy Fire Chief Aaron McAlister emphasized that this partnership aligns with the district's existing approach to physical health. Firefighters train at the academy, receive ongoing conditioning, and are supported when they sustain physical injuries on the job.

Mental performance, he noted, deserves the same level of preparation and attention. By engaging Restoration, the fire district is investing in preventative care that supports long, healthy, and sustainable careers.

This approach reflects a broader cultural shift happening within the fire service.

Mental health is increasingly viewed not as an optional resource, but as essential equipment for doing the job safely.

Restoration’s model supports firefighters throughout their careers, not just in moments of crisis, helping normalize care and reinforce that seeking support is a sign of professionalism, not weakness.

For the Contra Costa County community, this partnership represents a commitment to those who serve on its behalf.

By investing in the well-being of firefighters and their families, CCCFD is strengthening its workforce's resilience and ensuring that those who show up on the community’s hardest days are supported with the same dedication they give in return.

It is an investment not only in firefighters, but in the long-term health and safety of the entire community.

Redefining MVP: TIM TEBOW’S LIFE BEYOND FOOTBALL

An exclusive Q&A with City Lifestyle

PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

From championship trophies to global humanitarian impact, Tim Tebow’s journey has defied every standard playbook. In an exclusive conversation for the Share the Lifestyle podcast, Tebow pulls back the curtain on the moments that truly defined him, from a humbling middle school church retreat to the life-altering shift of fatherhood. This isn’t just a look back at a career; it’s an invitation into the heart of a man driven by purpose. Read the highlights below, then join us for the full, unfiltered experience by scanning the QR code at the end.

Q: WE ALL KNOW YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS ON THE FOOTBALL FIELD, BUT TELL US ABOUT THE CURL CONTEST.

A: I was competing for my future high school team (my brother’s team), and I pushed myself way past what was smart. I ended up collapsing and needing medical attention. But what stayed with me wasn’t the pain, it was the lesson. Would I be willing to do something that others aren’t? For much of my life, I strived to bring my best for a game, but I hope that I can say at the end of my life I was willing to do that for things that actually matter.

Q: YOU’VE ACHIEVED SO MUCH IN SPORTS. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS YOUR GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT NOW?

A: Becoming a dad. Nothing compares. From the moment I knew my wife was pregnant, I felt a new depth of love for our child, but when you bring your baby home, the responsibility hits you like nothing else. Suddenly, everything you see, every decision you make, you’re asking, “Is this corner too sharp? What happens if she reaches that drawer?” It changes how you see the world and how you see other people.

Q: YOU’VE SPOKEN OPENLY ABOUT DISAPPOINTMENT, ESPECIALLY AROUND FOOTBALL. HOW DID THAT SEASON OF LIFE SHAPE YOU?

A: I talked a lot about that very thing in my book Shaken . We all go through moments where our faith in our abilities and purpose feels rattled, but I believe it’s often in those storms when God can show us who we could become.

Q: YOU TALK A LOT ABOUT COMPARISON CULTURE. WHY DO YOU BELIEVE COMPARISON HAS BECOME SUCH A TRAP TODAY?

A: Because we’re comparing our real, everyday lives to someone else’s highlight reel. Social media shows people’s “best day,” often filtered and staged, and then we measure our reality against that. There’s a reason filters are so popular—it’s not real. We end up scrolling through images that don’t tell the full story, and without realizing it, comparison starts to steal our joy and our gratitude.

“We’re comparing our real, everyday lives to someone else’s highlight reel... comparison starts to steal our joy.”

Q: YOUR FOUNDATION FOCUSES ON THE “MOST VULNERABLE.” WHERE DID THAT CALLING BEGIN?

A: When I was 15, I met a boy in the Philippines who was treated as a throwaway because he was born with physical differences. That moment changed me. I realized God was calling me to pursue a different kind of MVP, not “Most Valuable Player,” but “Most Vulnerable People.”

Q: FINALLY, WHAT’S ONE THING PEOPLE MIGHT BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU?

A: I have some weird coffee habits, which include protein powder, collagen, and cream all mixed together. I love golf dates with my wife. And every night, I bring snacks to bed to share with our dogs. It brings me more joy than it probably should.

This conversation barely scratches the surface. Tim goes deeper into the moments that rattled him, the joys of fatherhood, and one story he has never shared publicly until now. Scan the QR code for the full, exclusive City Lifestyle interview on Share the Lifestyle Podcast.

WHEN SHOULD YOU START Retirement Planning?

Sooner Than You Think

For many people, retirement feels like a distant milestone—something to think about “later.”

Careers are busy, children are growing, and daily life leaves little room to imagine a chapter that may still be years away.

For most, retirement planning doesn’t begin with a calendar date but with a sobering realization: time is moving faster than expected, and financial decisions are becoming more interconnected.

There is a common misconception that retirement planning starts when work ends. In reality, it often begins much earlier, shaped by life’s transition points.

Buying a home, changing careers, raising children, caring for aging parents, and reaching peak earning years all influence the path toward retirement. Each phase brings different priorities— and different financial considerations.

Early in a career, retirement planning tends to focus on building habits: saving consistently, understanding risk, and taking advantage of long-term growth.

Mid-career often introduces competing demands—college tuition, mortgages, and lifestyle expenses—while also offering opportunities for higher earnings and strategic tax planning.

As retirement approaches, attention shifts toward income strategy, Social Security timing, healthcare costs, and managing market volatility.

What changes over time is not the importance of planning, but its purpose.

Stock Photo
Stock Photo

Early planning is about direction, while later planning is about coordination. Decisions about savings, investments, and withdrawals begin to affect one another more visibly.

A market downturn, an unexpected expense, or a change in employment can ripple through a financial picture that has grown more complex.

Being invested goes beyond managing money. It means taking the time to understand purpose and what matters most.

With added complexity, retirement planning may become harder to manage on your own. Each person approaches retirement with a different set of goals, aspirations, and lifestyle expectations.

Those choices shape not only how money is used today, but how it supports future independence and legacy.

Developing a plan requires more than calculations; it requires understanding what someone is personally invested in. Money may be the tool, but the real investment is in the lives it supports.

There is no single right moment to begin planning for retirement. The right time is when financial decisions start to carry long-term weight—and for most people, that arrives sooner than expected.

“The right time is when financial decisions start to carry long-term weight—and for most people, that arrives sooner than expected.”

With thoughtful guidance and a clear understanding of personal priorities, planning becomes less about fear of the future and more about preparing for it with intention.

HOW TO DESIGN A RELAXING SPACE

INVESTING IN HOME DESIGN CAN GIVE YOU A PEACEFUL SANCTUARY WHERE YOU CAN ESCAPE FROM THE STRESSES OF DAILY LIFE. SO GO AHEAD, TAKE THE PLUNGE AND REVAMP YOUR LIVING SPACES – IT’S WORTH EVERY PENNY!

invest inyour living space

There are many things that can help a room feel relaxing, but let’s keep it simple and focus on my top three. I would say that one must incorporate good lighting, great textures, and a decluttered space to truly get the cozy vibes. Let’s tackle each.

GOOD LIGHTING

It’s imperative that there are multiple sources of light in a space. Rooms need a soft warm light, so I always like to use a light bulb between 2,700k and 3,000k. Also, all lights should have the same temperature light bulb to avoid clashing. It’s not enough to just have recessed or pendant lighting. I add a table or floor lamp to a space to truly have ambient light.  Candles are a must for me. They can be scented candles (an extra way to add relaxation) or I like to use remote control tapered candles, so I don’t have to worry about cleaning up wax later.

GREAT TEXTURES

Textures are seen in toss pillows, rugs, draperies, throw blankets and furniture upholstery. Textures add color, pattern and visual interest. I like to use at least three different textures to help a room feel lived-in and welcoming.

DECLUTTERING

So many times, a person thinks that every nook and cranny and every wall need to have something, and this is not the case. A decluttered space is actually more relaxing because overcrowding of items doesn’t quiet the mind. Decluttering a space can be overwhelming, I get it, so just do it in stages.  You’ll love the outcome when the room is tidy, organized and you are only surrounded with what brings you joy.

YOUR SMARTEST HEALTH INVESTMENT?

IT MIGHT JUST BE A PAIR OF DUMBBELLS

“Muscle is your retirement account.”

When we think about investing, we tend to picture stock tickers, real estate portfolios, or perhaps a well-timed leap into a promising start-up. We rarely picture a kettlebell.

And yet, if you ask the physicians, trainers, and women I’ve been interviewing lately, strength training may be one of the highest-yield investments you can make — not just for your body, but for your future.

In this Investment Issue, we’re talking about growing wealth. But what if we broadened that definition? What if true wealth includes bone density, balance, energy, and the ability to hoist your own suitcase into the overhead bin at 72?

I recently spoke with a local strength coach in Walnut Creek who told me, “Muscle is your retirement account.”

I laughed — and then I stopped laughing. Because she’s right. After 30, we naturally lose muscle mass. After menopause, the decline accelerates. That loss impacts metabolism, stability, and even cognitive health. Strength training interrupts that slide.

Think of every squat as a deposit. Every deadlift as compound interest. Every push-up as a hedge against frailty.

The returns are impressive: stronger bones (a critical defense against osteoporosis), improved insulin sensitivity, better posture, reduced risk of falls, and yes — a metabolism that works with you instead of against you.

Studies even show resistance training supports mood and mental clarity. It’s diversification for your well-being.

And here’s the part that surprises many of the women I interview: strength training doesn’t mean morphing into a bodybuilder.

It means progressive resistance — challenging your muscles a little more over time. That might be dumbbells, resistance bands, machines, or simply your own body weight.

One woman in her mid-50s told me she started lifting because she wanted “arms that looked good in sleeveless dresses.”

What she gained instead was confidence.

“I walk differently,” she said. “I feel steady. Capable.”

Financial planners talk about long-term strategy. They caution against emotional decisions and encourage steady contributions.

Strength training asks the same thing of us: show up consistently. Lift a little heavier. Rest. Repeat.

You don’t need to overhaul your life overnight. A few sessions per week can begin shifting the trajectory. The key is thinking beyond bikini season. Think decades. Markets fluctuate. Trends change. But investing in your strength? That’s an asset that pays dividends for the rest of your life.

And unlike most portfolios, this one lets you carry all your own groceries.

HOW TO VISIT WITH HEART, INTENTION, AND RESPECT

ARTICLE

MAUI

NOW:

More than two years after the devastating Lahaina wildfires of August 2023, Maui is open, welcoming visitors again—and asking for something deeper in return.

“We need you to come back,” says John Pele, Executive Director of the Maui Hotel and Lodging Association. “You are an important part of our recovery. We want you to be part of our healing, part of our community, and part of our future.”

Tourism has long been one of Maui’s primary economic lifelines. But when travel dropped sharply after the fires, the impact didn’t stop with hotels—it rippled through every layer of the community.

Local restaurants, small shops, activity companies, artisans, musicians, and hospitality workers continue to feel the strain. Maui is slowly recovering, but not yet thriving.

And so, returning to Maui now is not simply about taking a vacation. It is an opportunity to travel with empathy, awareness, and meaning.

Much of Maui remains exactly as you remember it: the golden beaches of South Maui, the deep green rainforests of East Maui, and the majestic quiet of Haleakalā’s summit at dawn. Resorts and restaurants across Wailea, Kīhei, and Kā‘anapali are open and welcoming.

Lahaina, however, is different. Some areas remain closed as the community continues to heal and rebuild. The shift is emotional and visible, and visiting requires intention.

“Respect the space,” Pele says. “Some people are still healing. Others are asking for your business. It’s a balance.”

If you’re unsure how best to support, start by asking the people who know best: your hotel staff.

“No one knows Maui better than the people working in our hotels,” Pele says. “They’ll guide you to local restaurants, family-owned stores, and activities that benefit the community.”

There are many ways to bring intention to your visit. One of the most meaningful is to give back—whether through time, support, or donation.

Pele shared the story of a couple from Canada who spent their vacation volunteering alongside a local nonprofit.

“They told us it was the most fulfilling trip they’d ever taken,” he says. “They left feeling like they were part of something, not just passing through.”

For some travelers, volunteering may mean assisting with community-based environmental projects or cultural restoration efforts. For others, it could mean supporting organizations that are helping residents rebuild their lives.

For example, the Maui Humane Society continues to face overwhelming demand, caring for pets displaced by the fires and working to prevent overcrowding and euthanasia. Donating time, supplies, or resources to groups like this can have a real and immediate impact.

Giving back doesn’t have to be formal, either. Supporting locally owned restaurants, markets, and craft shops keeps dollars directly in the community. Asking questions, learning names, and engaging with compassion turns a trip into a relationship.

Travel can be transformative, and Maui invites you to let it be. You can still sink toes into warm sand, swim in luminous blue water, and watch the sky turn rose-gold at sunset—but you are also invited to connect more deeply.

“You can go to a beautiful beach anywhere,” Pele says. “What makes Maui special is the culture and the people. If you leave here with a sense of connection, then your visit meant something—to you and to us.”

Now is a moment where your presence matters. Maui is not asking visitors to look away from what happened, nor to treat the island simply as a postcard backdrop. Instead, it offers something more meaningful: the chance to be part of healing and renewal.

Travelers who come now have the opportunity to support families, restore livelihoods, and stand beside a community rebuilding itself with strength and dignity.

Maui remains Maui—full of beauty, warmth, and aloha. But by traveling with intention, you leave not only with memories but with a sense of connection, understanding, and shared humanity. And that is something far more lasting than a lei.

CAN’T-MISS EXPERIENCES, DONE WITH CARE

• Beach time in Wailea, Kīhei, Kā‘anapali, or Nāpili—enjoy the water, but respect reef and shoreline guidelines.

• Haleakalā Crater—go at sunrise or sunset for an unforgettable moment.

• The Road to Hāna—a beautiful journey, but go slowly, respectfully, and pull over only in designated areas.

• A day supporting small businesses in West Maui—shop, eat, and listen.
