LIFESTYLE LETTER

New Beginnings and Routines

January 2023 PUBLISHER

Amy Janzen | amy.janzen@citylifestyle.com EDITOR IAL COOR DINATOR

Emily McKeever | emily.mckeever@citylifestyle.com

For many of us, this time of year is full of excitement. It presents us with a reset, new horizons, and goals to pursue. But for others, January can be a reminder of attempts from years past and the burden of expectation that this year will be different. We approached this issue of Waconia City Lifestyle from a mindset of not supplying quick fixes to check boxes in the short term but valuing what is sustainable over the long haul. We wanted to provide inspiration for making lasting, realistic, long-term improvements to your physical, emotional, and mental health. This issue is especially close to my heart. Six years ago after our son was born, I suffered, unknowingly at the time, from postpartum depression. As I became more lost and feeling a fog in my life, I brought in exercise and emotional support, which truly helped me get past the struggles. My mind and body felt restored by being active and helped me feel motivated to do more for myself. I realized that I cannot show up for my family with my glass half empty. I wholeheartedly love supporting and advocating for mind, body, and soul self-care. The mind can be our own worst enemy. I believe having techniques to manage stress is so helpful in combatting those negative thoughts. I hope this issue helps you look at life with a new lens in the new year and offers exciting ideas and do-able ways to take care of yourself. When it comes to anything in life - business, finance, food, home, and personal health – it’s not what you do some days that moves the needle - it’s what you do MOST days. For better or worse! It’s not the sometimes choices we make, it’s the most of the time choices that make the difference. Healthy consistent habits will keep you feeling your best. So plan the vacation AND work to establish more regular rest in your work week. Join a fitness community or gym AND enjoy that dessert you’ve been wanting to try at Bakery on Main. It’s not what you do some days - it’s what you do most days that will lead to a more peaceful, filling, and fabulous 2023. Happy New Year! We’re rooting for you.

S TA R T W I T H THE BASICS ARTICLE BY AMANDA WAGNER

Sometimes, starting is the hardest part. But these daily habits are about simplifying the process to improve your health.

Whether it’s the beginning of a new year or simply the right time to get started, we complicate the process of getting healthy. But a strong foundation begins with the basics. It’s not about perfection or doing everything at once. Instead, it’s a focus on small, incremental improvements – daily enhancements that build upon one another to have a big impact overall. Julie Stevens, founder and owner of The Healing Path knows it’s about what you do consistently that makes the most significant difference. Julie regularly shares these simple things with her clients to improve their health. These practices are approachable, accessible, and have a positive effect if done consistently. 1. Drink high-quality water. This sounds simple, but only some people drink enough water each day. Julie noted you need at least half your body weight in ounces. If you consume caffeine or alcohol, you need more. And this is the easiest place to start because anyone can do it. Quality matters too; reverse osmosis and Berkey are two options Julie suggests. 2. Breathwork to reduce stress. Breathing, you do it every day. But intentional breathwork is different. Box breathing is a great option and can be done anywhere. You start by

14

H EA LT H Y LIF E ST Y LE | HE ALTH + W E LLNE S S

breathing in through the nose for 4 seconds. You then hold for 4 seconds. Next, you exhale through your mouth for a count of 4 seconds. Doing this several times a day can significantly reduce daily stress. The key is consistency and building it into your existing routine. You can do this exercise during your daily commute, immediately following lunch, or in the shower. 3. Prioritize sleep. The key to sleep is a solid routine because you are setting yourself up for success. Ideally, you should go to bed and wake at the same time at least 6 days a week, aiming for 8 hours a night. You should remove electronics from your room, stop watching screens at least an hour before bed and create a dark, calming environment. Sleep is a time of healing. These practices may seem simple, but it’s often the simplest activities that make the biggest difference. Julie started as a massage therapist 24 years ago, but her view of health and wellness has evolved over time. Now, after earning her doctorate in naturopathy, she is focused even more on a functional approach to medicine. It’s important to listen to the body, learn how it works, and treat the root cause of a problem, instead of just treating the symptoms.

Overall Well-Being

1 2.

| What and when you eat matters.

Food is a big hurdle for many because it comes with a lot of emotions. But the steps to eating better are simple. Eat something raw at every meal, prioritizing vegetables, fruits, legumes, and whole grains. Consume processed foods sparingly. Make breakfast and lunch the biggest meals of the day, because it is when digestion is strongest.

2

| Move your body daily.

Life has become very sedentary, so movement matters more than ever. Get outside, preferably in the sunlight. Walk, stretch, or skip for 20-30 minutes. This supports your lymphatic system and helps detox your body.

3 3.

| The power of positive thinking.

As the saying goes, whether you think you can or you can’t, you’re right. Your words and thoughts have power. Choose your thoughts wisely, speak kindly and positively to yourself.

4

| Detox your life.

Toxic people and toxic experiences can impact your mental and emotional well-being. They bring negativity and make everything feel harder. Removing toxicity from your life might be difficult but will be well worth it.

Young uses his experience with mental illness to work with his clients

Men And Mental Health: Overcoming The Stigma How Randy Young is supporting and guiding men through mental health issues in Waconia

M EN TA L WE LLB IN G | LOCAL S E RVI CE S

Many of us view January as the month of new beginnings. The holidays are past us, and things have slowed down a bit, but we are still in the dark, cold months of winter. We often look at ways to use this time of new starts to eat healthier, exercise more, or drink less alcohol. But we often overlook one of the most important aspects of our lives: our mental health. This is where Randy Young is here to help. Young is the owner of Revive With Randy, a Waconiabased organization focused on men’s mental health. He’s working to not only guide and support men but also remove some stigma surrounding men talking about their struggles. He is a Certified Peer Support Specialist (CPSS), providing support and encouragement to those working through mental health issues. Formerly an IT enterprise architect, he became a CPSS after suffering a mental breakdown in 2020. His sister-in-law, Heather Boll, (also a CPSS and owner of The Hive in Waconia), helped him work through that time and get on the other side of it. “As a CPSS, I use the experience I’ve had with mental illness to help others put a game plan together to manage their mental fitness,” he says. “This usually includes a regular session to keep working on the plan, see how things are going, and help with any issues. I don’t fix mental illness; we manage mental illness together.” Getting through his dark time inspired Young to start a men’s group, called Speakeasy. The group meets for two hours at The Hive in Waconia on a regular basis. It’s

a place for men to connect and heal from issues impacting their lives. In addition, he offers tools and resources to help men with their struggles as well as individual sessions, which are available for men ages teen to adult. “Mental illness has no age boundaries,” he says. “It does not discriminate. It impacts all walks of life.” For men, in particular, talking about feelings and mental struggles still has some stigma. Young explains it’s a man’s nature to be strong, which, for some, does not equal being vulnerable. Cultural and societal pressure can also make men feel they need to be tough and not show emotion. He also recognizes the impact of getting a constant influx of negative news and social media. Mental health is becoming less taboo of a topic, thanks in large part to celebrities and professional athletes talking about it. Michael Phelps, Kevin Love, and Dak Prescott are some of many who have opened up about their struggles with anxiety and depression. “The crazy thing is, as a man, I think one of the strongest and bravest things you can do is be vulnerable, show emotion, and ask for help,” Young says. He commends Minnesota Gophers football coach PJ Fleck with making mental health awareness a priority with his team. Fleck and his staff meet with members of the team each week to talk about what’s going on in their lives, and it doesn’t need to be about football. Fleck has also been open about his own struggles with mental health. There are signs to be aware of if you or someone you know is grappling with mental health. If someone is suddenly short-tempered, stops doing what they love, or

“What works for one person may not work for another.” is hesitant to do what they previously enjoyed, it could be a red flag. In addition, if someone tries to escape the pain with alcohol or drugs, it’s a sign they’re struggling. Young recommends some easy things men (and women) can do when they’re feeling down, anxious, or overwhelmed. “What works for one person may not work for another,” he says. “The key is finding the right combination.” Some things he suggests in trying to reduce stress and anxiety: • Eliminate caffeine • Listen to relaxing music

• Use an oil diffuser with a scent you like • Meditate and take time for yourself • Reduce stressful situations, like being in a large crowd. In these dark days of winter, when all of us can get to feeling a bit cooped up and alone, Young recommends finding something you like to do and encourages trying new activities. Young offers in-person help, group sessions, and phone or Zoom sessions. To make an appointment or to join the men’s Speakeasy group, go to http://www.hivemn.com.

Detox, cleanse, abstain, purge. It doesn’t sound fun but Dry January, a break from drinking that accompanies holiday parties and gatherings, doesn’t have to be boring. The celebration can continue with near-beer’s upgrade, the mocktail. Non-alcoholic beverages aren’t solely for after the majority of your holiday cheer was spread ‘round the eggnog bowl. Erin Jensen, founder and creator of The Wooden Skillet, is who to turn to for delicious, refreshing options and so much more. Mix them when you host the first barbeque of the summer or when family visits from out of town. The alcohol might be missing but the flavors and fun won’t.

LEGGINGS 3 WAY S ARTICLE BY HALEY WILLIAMS

Our suggestions for styling faux leather leggings As we move through the season of spandex when most of us feel we’d rather not leave our stretchy pants, we wanted to feature three distinct looks using the same pair of Foil Snake Print Faux Leather leggings from Spanx. Whether you’re brunching with the babes or getting ready for date night, these versatile leggings can carry you through from casual to chic. While there are endless ways to wear them, we’re going to show you three ways to start styling them today.

BRUNCH AFTER BARRE Who doesn’t love a good brunch with the girls after your workout complete with mimosas to celebrate? Assuming you are sweaty from leg lifts and flutter kicks, our suggestion is to layer your sweaty tank with loose layers and a light jacket to swiftly transition you from the barre to breakfast. A hat is always a good option to have on hand in case you worked too hard and that hair is showing it. We opted for easy-to-slip-on sockless sneakers that breathe. Since feet are one of the ways the body regulates temperature, you want to go airy with your footwear after a workout. Lastly, don’t forget a cute tote or bag. Consider throwing in a clean tank and any makeup or face wipes you may need for freshening up on your way.

MOTO MAMA What we love about Spanx is their inherent ability to elevate your look, regardless of the occasion. Stretchy pants in a faux leather snake design? Say no more. Pair them with edgy booties or colorful pumps for a more elegant aesthetic. Playing with different textures is a good way to add interest and intrigue. Consider a chunky sweater with some unexpected details like the bare shoulder shown here, a thick boucle or intricate detailing. We love a good leather jacket with hardware details draped over the shoulder(s) for chilly evenings as you traverse the town. Pair this look with a gorgeous sparkly clutch and chunky bracelet.

SATUR DAY Whether you’re headed to a child’s sports game or a bar to watch the big game with your friends, leggings offer the structure and flexibility you’ll want as you find your spot among the fans in the bleachers or indulge in some lovely libations. Layers are life for this look. We tied a button-down around the waist which is so nice through the colder winter months as both an outfit accessory and a layering piece. Fur-lined high tops provide practical footwear for this look — because who doesn’t love some killer sneaks? A shacket and crossover bag complete the look.

Whether you want a bit of a boost, a hint of a lift, or just a little tuck, you won’t go wrong with this versatile shapewear. And with these styling tips, you’re ready to throw them on for any occasion!

Snag some of the key details of the outfits here! 30
