LIFESTYLE LETTER
Happy Holidays!
December 2023 PUBLISHER
Dave Robertson | dave.robertson@citylifestyle.com EDITOR
Lauren Beaubaire | lauren.beaubaire@citylifestyle.com
The holidays are here, and as the spirit of the season is among us, we often try to replicate what made the season feel so magical to us in our youth. The traditions we set for our own families often mirror some of what we experienced as a child, whether it is the smells, the sounds, the lights, the holiday activities, or a combination of it all that reflects that best. A few of my favorite holiday memories are arriving in Oskaloosa, Iowa, and sleeping over with all of my many cousins in anticipation of gift exchanges. My Grandpa bribed all of his 13 grandchildren with “coffee noochie” (Equal parts coffee, cream, and sugar) while we watched Saturday morning cartoons and the adults slept in. Also, exchanging gifts with one another with the family tradition of sticking each bow on your head as you unwrapped each present. And attending church and singing Silent Night by candlelight and truly taking in the meaning of the holiday. This month, we wanted to highlight the magic of the season and share what Waconia and Victoria have to offer that helps spread holiday cheer. We meet The Grater Good and learn why good cheese makes everything merry and bright with their beautiful and delicious cheese boards. We make sure you’re ready and prepped for the holidays with a stress-free guide to holiday hosting, how to keep your pets safe this season, and how to get holiday-party ready with the help of a few experts. Plus, we share great gift ideas for everyone on your list. We also wanted to share what our area has to offer this holiday season for entertainment and ways to give back. While this season can be beautiful for some, it can be painful and lonely for others, especially those who have recently lost a loved one. In the true spirit of the season, let’s take care of those in our community who need assistance or are alone. My hope for you this season is that you feel love and peace and that we all remember to take care of each other, extending grace, empathy, and love. Happy Holidays!

HELP SANTA STUFF STOCKINGS WITH WONDER (AND SURPRISES!) THROUGH THE SUPPORT OF LOCAL BUSINESSES

You know him as the guy who can do it all. He works 365 days a year, he’s the boss of countless overly joyful staff, he maintains a long list of names and must decide naughty or nice, again and again, and he keeps track of who wants what in which color and style. Not to mention the stress of wondering if this will be the year the chimneys are just a little too snug, the trust he puts into the flying ability of nine hard-working but exhausted reindeer who are led by a single headlight and don’t even try to count how many miles his team covers in ONE NIGHT. You know who we’re talking about. Some call him Captain Christmas; to others, he’s Jolly Ol’ St. Nick, but to most, he’s Santa Claus, and he needs a break. If you want to get or stay on Santa’s nice list this year, you’re in luck! There is a fun variety of local businesses that can help you stay in good form with the big guy by padding the kids’ stockings with a few extras. And if you give Santa credit? Let’s just say your loyalty card is in the mail.
Who knows, maybe a couple of goodies will show up in your holiday hosiery too, that is, if Santa erased the middle school “broken window mystery of 1994” from your behavior record. For the game lover in your life, Mystic Fortress Games has several winning options. Slip a pack or two of Pokémon or Magic: The Gathering cards in that felt Frosty the Snowman stocking, along with a themed Spot It game for cuddly winter game nights. While you’re there, grab some whimsical vinyl stickers for chrome book or water bottle décor, too! Your favorite bookworm will love the colorful bookmarks at Chapter One Books. They can add to their collection of unique page-saving placeholders, and because no bookmark shall ever go solo, select a crisp paperback or two to accompany them. No worries if they don’t quite fit. Wrap them in holiday cheer (a.k.a. the ugly Christmas sweater paper) and place them just beside your festive fireplace. Warm their spirits and extremities with outdoor accessories from Nice Shirt Co. There you’ll find hats and mittens for all ages; some with a Waconia (or Minnesota Viking) color scheme, others in cable-knit for an ultra-cozy aesthetic or iconic fair isle (think snowflake-like motifs) so your youngsters can get that just-steppedoff-the-slopes-and-am-heading-to-the-chalet vibe. When outdoor enjoyment is over, they can drop a bomb in the bathtub, a holiday-themed bath bomb, that is. Who wouldn’t want to soak in gingerbread aroma this time of year? With a name like Tazzie Baby & Child, you know only an array of delightful treasures will come from this quaint children’s boutique. So,

imagine the delight in your little one’s eyes when their fingers brush against a soft Taggie blanket or as they run down the stairs and see an elf lovey peeking over the edge of their plush-topped stocking. And don’t forget an exciting finale to your crack-of-dawn adventure with a mini puzzle or tiny truck tucked in the toe, a perfect place for a surprise. Teens can be hard to shop for, and let’s face it, they can also be stinky. Lucky for you, the Beauty Room has you covered…for both! Spongelle body wash-infused buffers are an excellent way for your teens to spruce up in the shower or bath before a Christmas day get-together or before heading back to school. Choose between the Extreme Buffer with spicy cayenne pepper extract built-in or one with refreshing coconut verbena. And while underwear isn’t always a welcome gift (Moms, we see you), they’ll definitely welcome some travel-sized toiletries in upscale, luxurious brands. The holidays are both stressful and exciting. Many of us find ourselves in the midst of a festive whirlwind, juggling family gatherings, gift shopping, and meal preparations. But hosting your loved ones doesn’t have to add stress to your already packed schedule. We’ve enlisted the expertise of Kristin Campbell, the creative force behind Kristin Therese Designs, to share her advice on how to prepare your home for holiday guests while also enjoying the holidays too.
FROM HOSPITALITY TO DESIGN [AND BACK] Kristin’s journey into the world of interior design was a second career, and it all began with a twist of fate. She had been working in the travel industry with a focus on event and meeting planning, when she was laid off in 2009. This was an opportunity. She had always loved decorating, and decided it was time to pursue this interest. After getting certified as a home stager and designer, she dove headfirst into entrepreneurship. Kristin’s work primarily focuses on design, ranging from projects to consultations, color consults and e-design. She wants her clients to not just love their home, but feel comfortable and at ease. Currently, she’s working on a new certification as a vacation rental design specialist, because she believes everyone should stay in a space or home they love [even when away].
PLANNING AHEAD FOR A STRESS-FREE HOLIDAY For Kristin, stress-free holiday hosting is all about the planning. There are many things you can do ahead of time to make the holiday season as enjoyable as possible. 1. Prepare the guest room [and bath]: If your guests will be spending the night, get their space ready in advance. Consider what they will need during their stay and how they might use the space. Replace bedding with fresh linens, provide extra blankets, leave a bottle of water, and ensure a lamp is nearby to let your guests easily move around the room. If you have a guest bath, ensure it is well-stocked with essentials and has a welcoming touch. Little details show your guests that you’ve put thought and intention into their stay. 2. Plan the meal [and ask for help]: If you’re hosting a meal, consider making pies or prepping dishes in advance. Set the table to create a warm and inviting atmosphere. Don’t forget to ask your guests to bring a dish or drinks to make your job easier. They want to help! 3. Consider a kid-friendly space: If children will be attending, create a designated area with games, activities, and a special table for them. Make them feel welcome and entertained, while also ensuring the adults can relax and enjoy the holiday gathering too. CONTINUED >

4. Decorating [and where to find the right decor]: When it comes to design, layers, texture, and contrast add interest. Consider layering a tablecloth, runner, and placemats. Mix dishes, like white plates with patterned salad plates. Pull out special pieces like china bowls for serving. Use linen napkins and quality glassware. Don’t forget the fresh flowers. If your holiday decor needs an update, Kristin loves stores like Home Goods, where you can mix and match to create a festive atmosphere. 5. When in doubt, hire it out: A one-time cleaning service can ensure your home is the sparkling clean slate you know it can be. Even decorating is made easier with help from a friend. Hiring a decorator is a great way to get a fresh take on your own decor and elevate your home for the holidays. Another area you can outsource is the food. Consider catering the entire meal or just a portion of it. The goal is to find a balance between enjoying your guests and the day without being tied to the kitchen.

CREATING MOMENTS & MEMORIES At the end of the day, what matters most during the holidays is enjoying the company of your guests and creating cherished memories. The holidays are, above all, about spending time with family and friends. Kristin encourages you to skip perfection and focus on what truly matters – the warmth, love, and joy that you and your guests bring to the holiday celebration. Decorating and design doesn’t have to be stressful. With a little bit of planning and some necessary delegation, you can host family and friends while enjoying the holidays too. Remember to embrace the spirit of the season, create memorable moments, and make your guests feel welcomed in a space filled with love and thoughtfulness.
“If you’re hosting a meal, consider making pies or prepping dishes in advance. Don’t forget to ask your guests to bring a dish or drinks to make your job easier. They want to help!”

FASHION Eleece Pink, owner of The Stash of Waconia, a favorite local women’s boutique, already has her holiday party outfit planned. And she is ready to help us look our best and, more importantly, feel great. “At The Stash, our motto is that looking fashionable doesn’t have to cost a fortune,” says Eleece. “My biggest tip for everyone is to first go through your closet and find one staple piece you already own, like a base turtleneck. Then you can shop for something to jazz it up, like a fun blazer or red sequin skirt to go with that item.” One of the biggest trends Eleece is seeing for this holiday season is more sequins and sparkles. “People are getting more glam and dressed up this year. We’re seeing a lot more flashy and fun items.” While you might see more fashion fanfare this holiday season, Eleece assures there is no right or wrong outfit to wear during your holiday festivities. But she does recommend reading the room. “Knowing the
dress code beforehand will ensure you feel good in what you’re wearing,” advises Eleece. “You want to feel comfortable in whatever you put on and not worry the whole night if you’re overdressed or underdressed.” So, what is Eleece wearing to her holiday parties this year? “My family is more casual for the holidays, so I’m going with an elevated, comfortable look and wearing leather joggers and a fun sweater with some sparkle,” shares Eleece. If you need to dress up that staple item in your closet, The Stash is the perfect place to add that extra sparkle for your holiday party.
FOOD With frosting-laden cookies and decadent spritzer cocktails, eating healthfully can be one of the biggest challenges around the holidays. The good news is Erica Hoese, fitness and wellness coach at Elite Nutrition, shares her five tips to help you keep your health goals when heading out to holiday parties this season. CONTINUED >

1. “Number one is to drink water,” says Erica. “Water tends to be the first thing people cut out and replace with surgery, holiday drinks. Be sure to drink water 30 minutes before you head to the party, and if you’re going to have a drink, stick to drinks that have straight alcohol rather than fruity, surgery cocktails.” 2. Stick to your workout routine. “Don’t punish yourself after an indulgent night,” says Erica. “Stay consistent in your workout. It will help fire up your metabolism, and it usually just makes you feel good.” 3. Don’t skip meals. “Many people skip meals to ‘save’ calories for later, but often that backfires and leads to overeating later in the day. Having a protein-based snack 30 minutes before you head out can help prevent you from eating more than you planned.” 4. “Before you go to the party, choose the non-negotiable treats that you definitely want to have,” advises Erica. “Make sure you take the treats and food you actually love and will truly enjoy eating so you’re not mindlessly piling food on your plate just because it’s there.” 5. Enjoy! “It’s one day,” reminds Erica. “You don’t get fit with one workout, and you don’t lose all your progress with one meal. Don’t beat yourself up for eating treats. You can get right back on track after your holiday party.”

P E T-P R O O F I N G T H E H O L I DAY S ENSURI N G A SA FE SE ASON FOR YOUR FURRY FRI EN DS W I TH TIP S FROM D R. JE SSICA R ADTK E MA LTEZ Anticipation and merriment fill the air like the smell of holiday cookies in the oven; giving and love are the sprinkles on top. This time of year, spirits are made a little brighter, and comfort and joy are spread a little wider, but our sweater-clad arms don’t need to extend far to reach our precious furry family members. This ‘howl-day,’ while the Fa-la-la’ing is in full effect and sugar-fueled traditions aplenty, let’s not overlook the safety and, of course, festive spirit of Fido and Whiskers. Dr. Jessica Radtke Maltez, owner, and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine at Victoria Veterinary Hospital, says the biggest issue in the clinic around the holidays is pets ingesting food that is not safe. “We see problems with dogs and cats eating things they shouldn’t -- more than any other time of the year. If it is served during the holidays, it seems that a dog somewhere has eaten it.” And just as this time of year can be stressful for humans, the same goes for our pets. New people, loud wrapping paper, that large water bowl with the tree that…just… won’t…budge… can be very overwhelming for animals. “It’s okay to use gates, pet enclosures, crates, and the like.” With the colder temperatures settling in, Dr. Jessica says keeping a closer eye on our four-legged pals is a good idea. “Owners may think they’ll come back because it’s cold, but they end up wandering instead.” She says this especially goes for older dogs with dementia. While Dr. Jessica notes that dogs usually do well in the winter for quick bathroom breaks, ear tips can freeze, which she sees more often in outdoor cats. A line item to consider adding at the top of your Santa’s Helper List is getting your pet microchipped. “Often, when people are coming and going from a house during a party, a dog or cat can accidentally get out and go missing -- before anyone notices. Having your pet microchipped, along with the usual tag with your information, increases the chance they will find their way back to you.”

Who’s a good boy? Fido is a good boy, and Santa will reward him! Puzzle toys are a great option to keep canine friends busy and to slow their eating, and of course, catnip is always a treat for feline buddies. She says to use caution with toys and put away any tempting favorites after playtime. “Dogs who like to chew will often swallow parts that cause blockages that need to be surgically removed.” Rope-style toys, especially, can be shredded easily and cause blockages. “The last place you want to spend your holiday is in an emergency room with your pet!” We always hear the phrase, “safety first,” but for our ever-faithful companions this season, fun and safety can go hand in hand with a little preparation and extra attention. Oh, and don’t forget to toss in a shiny new frisbee or feather wand for them to delight in, under supervision, of course. victoriavet.net

Keeping your pets from eating something bad for them can be especially tough around the holidays, particularly with guests who may not know better and want to give your pup a table scrap or two. Dr. Jessica suggests calling your local veterinarian or checking with the Pet Poison Helpline if a dog or cat ingests something other than their typical food.

Celebrating the Holidays Can’t Get ‘Grater’ Than This
M E E T T H E G R AT E R G O O D AND LEARN WHY GOOD CHEESE MAKES EVERY THING MERRY AND BRIGHT
ARTICLE BY EMILY MCKEEVER
Along with her boards, Christine is now selling cheese wedges and blocks on her website and hopes to start doing farm tours next summer.

“Farming isn’t a job; it’s a way of life,” and it’s one that Christine Leonard, a 6th generation dairy farmer on the Leonard Family Farm and owner of The Grater Good, loves. “I love the rhythm and life of farming, the good and the bad times.” Christine grew up with dairy cows in her backyard and lightheartedly admits that she’s been playing with her food her whole life. It wasn’t until she headed east to the University of Wisconsin Stout for a degree in Food Science that she realized home was where her heart and passion lived. She’d been bitten by the farming bug, and no amount of “rubbing a little dirt on it” would sway her. Her parents were reluctant; they wanted her to think long and hard. “Farming is a lot of work. You milk twice a day, 365 days a year, and margins can be difficult,” Christine admits. She took more time away and became an assistant cheesemaker at Redhead Creamery, where she found another love: artisan cheese. “I’ve always been interested in farm to fork, how our food changes. There’s nothing like milking a cow in the morning, then eating a cheese curd made from that milk in the afternoon.” In 2018, Christine’s path on the map of life brought her back to the Leonard Family Farm, and a year later, aspiring for greater possibilities, The Grater Good was born. “Initially, I thought we could bottle milk or process our own cheese, but that’s not in the cards right now.” Christine utilized her relationships with grocers, artisan farms, and creameries and began making small cheese boards for friends. “When people started asking
if they could buy a few, I thought maybe I have something here.” She quickly learned a licensed commercial kitchen was needed to make her business plans work, so her dad and brother gutted an old announcing booth from the Minnesota State Fair, where all her edible artwork is created. It will come as no surprise that Christine believes cheese is the most important ingredient on her boards. “The cheese is where I begin, and I build from there in the way I want people to eat it. With intention.” On these roadmaps of flavors and textures she creates, Christine never places an accompaniment next to a cheese you wouldn’t eat it with. “I’d never put olives next to honey goat cheese because you’d never eat those things together.” Along with an array of locally sourced components, each of her boards comes with an informational sheet, a key to her roadmaps, that shares each cheese’s backstory and pairing suggestions. With the holiday season in full swing, Christine’s hope is that you place one of her boards in the center of a table filled with loved ones, slow down, and enjoy. Or, if you need a quick “something to bring,” she suggests grabbing a wedge of blue cheese, drizzling honey on it, adding candied walnuts, and bringing along a sleeve of crackers for an appetizer that’s sure to impress. “It’s also a perfect excuse to use the snowman plate that’s sitting in the back of your cupboard,” Christine laughs. And if you’d rather cover Frosty with your own creation, she says don’t overcomplicate it. “It’s okay to keep it simple with a couple of different cheeses, nuts, and jams.” You’ve been living under a cheese block if you haven’t heard of a Grater Good class or tasting, usually held at a winery or brewery. Christine also does private classes at people’s homes, making for a really great gift around the

Being with people fills Christine’s cup, and so do her cows. “They’re why we have a cheese business at all. I love working with cows.” Each of their 45 has a name, and each is a vital part of their family’s story. “Beautiful food from people who care” is their tagline, but perhaps it should be, “Beautiful food from people who care, are filled with passion and excitement for the next stop on their roadmap of life.” D ECEMB ER 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . The City Lifestyle
Giving Campaign
2023 30
G IV IN G BAC K | L IFE + CULTURE
“
This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”
The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.” “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds. City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep giving on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is truly rewarding and it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster a culture of generosity.”
