The holidays are here, and as the spirit of the season is among us, we often try to replicate what made the season feel so magical to us in our youth. The traditions we set for our own families often mirror some of what we experienced as a child, whether it is the smells, the sounds, the lights, the holiday activities, or a combination of them all. Creating memorable experiences with my children adds to the magic of the season and warms my heart. Seeing them get excited about our matching pajamas each year, or visiting the houses all lit up and in sync with music, is what I love about creating holiday traditions. This month, we’re highlighting the magic of the season and what our city offers to spread holiday cheer. We’ve compiled a gift guide to make your shopping easier with products that support our local businesses. We’re also sharing what our area has to offer this holiday season for entertainment and ways to create your own family traditions. While this season can be beautiful for some, it can be painful and lonely for others, especially those who have recently lost a loved one. In the true spirit of the season, let’s take care of those in our community that need assistance or are alone. My hope for you this season is that you feel love and peace, extending grace, empathy and love to one another. Happy Holidays!

PEAR & BRIE CHEESE SALAD SKEWERS
INGREDIENTS 2 pears (or substitute green apple) 8 ounces of brie cheese 2 cups baby arugula 1/4 cup raw walnuts, chopped Balsamic glaze
INSTRUCTIONS Cut pear and brie into 1/2-inch cubes. Leaving the rind makes skewers less sticky to handle! Take (4-inch) skewer, add pear, arugula, and cheese. Gently press chopped walnuts onto brie cheese to stick. Drizzle balsamic glaze overtop.

your local holiday gift guide Not sure what to give? Look no further than these fantastic gift ideas that’ll make your holiday unique and meaningful If you’ve heard it once, you’ve heard it a thousand times, “I don’t want anything for Christmas this year” or “Save your money, I don’t need anything” and the mother of all platitudes, “Your company is the only gift I need.” Holiday hogwash. You want a good Christmas gift, and you know it. So does your neighbor, your friend, and your kid’s teacher. Your daycare lady doesn’t want another coffee mug, your kids don’t want underwear, and believe me when I say your Mom DOES NOT WANT NOODLE ART. It’s time to take back the power. Do it passively or do it aggressively, just do it. Make yourself a good, old-fashioned wish list. Create it on Amazon, write it on the back of your Target receipt, or carve it in stone, petroglyph style. Then share it. Take this gift guide out, highlight, circle, or write your name by your favorites like you did when you were a kid. Then leave it open on the counter. Or repeat after me, “This year I want *insert something that you totally deserve because you’re awesome* for Christmas.” Ralphie’s Christmas loot would’ve come to a screeching halt after the famous deranged bunny suit pajama incident had he not been relentless in his pursuit of getting an “official Red Ryder carbine action, 200shot range model air rifle with a compass in the stock and
this thing that tells time.” Nearly 30 times in the movie, by the way. The kid knew what he was doing. Think about it this way, if you’re a passenger on the minimalist train, wouldn’t you rather make space in your house for something you love instead of another scarf? Or some say ‘tis better to give than to receive so be your generous self and look at your list as the gift of stress-free shopping. Maybe triple-circling the Christmas Cider candle (raises hand) feels a little forward but what’s wrong with feeling a little of that nostalgia, when Christmas was all about the pile of presents under the tree? Of course, we know in our heart of hearts that the true meaning of Christmas is peace on earth and goodwill toward men but there’s a sweetness in reliving one of the most memorable Christmas time traditions of dropping your letter in the mail and dreaming about its journey to the North Pole. And opening that special something? There was nothing better. Ralphie schemed, he blurted, and he even straight up asked Jolly Old St. Nick himself. If he pressed on, despite the incessant warning that he’d shoot his eye out, you can make a little list and drop a few hints. It’s homemade bunny suit pajamas or a BB gun. It’s up to you.

The City Lifestyle
Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amount up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”
