In the Spirit of Thanksgiving In this season of giving thanks, we can find ourselves reflecting on the many blessings in our lives. The spirit of Thanksgiving encourages the conscious expression of gratitude. Its focus is spending time with those that you love and welcomes giving back in a meaningful way. It’s often easy to get caught up in the have-nots and material possessions. In this wonderful time we hope to slow down, reflect on what makes us truly thankful, and focus on being happy just where we are. Psalm 107:1 states, “Start each day with a grateful heart”. As I get older and my kids grow, it becomes apparent to me how much I take for granted. It takes practice for me to slow down and see all that I have in my life and am grateful for, especially when I feel pulled in 1000 directions as a parent and business owner. When I actually slow down and look at my kiddos playing, laughing and embracing life, I feel an overwhelming sense of love and gratitude. It is one of my greatest blessings. Our November issue is dedicated to stories of gathering, gratefulness and giving back to our community. We are thankful for the residents and businesses who support so many wonderful organizations and help make our city vibrant. We are especially thankful for our advertising partners who help bring this magazine to your doorsteps each month. They are part of our vision and purpose of bringing inspiring stories and the good news of the community directly to you. Providing Hope to Victims of Abuse HOW SOUTHERN VALLEY ALLIANCE HAS SAVED AND CHANGED LIVES IN CARVER COUNTY FOR 40 YEARS

Supporters of Southern Valley Alliance gather to celebrate the groundbreaking of their new facility in Shakopee

As the holidays near, many of us look forward to spending time with family and friends. For victims of domestic abuse, however; the added stress of the holiday season can be a time of fear and hopelessness. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV), nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States. Often people are embarrassed and afraid to tell anyone, and they don’t know where to turn for help. This is where a handful of people are making a big difference. For 40 years, Southern Valley Alliance (SVA) has been changing the lives of women, men, and children in Carver and Scott counties. To date, they’ve provided services to 23,000 members of our community, allowing them to live healthy lives free of abuse. Katie Schaumann, SVA Community Engagement Coordinator, emphasizes the importance of a community rallying behind victims of domestic abuse. According to Schaumann, domestic violence, despite being very dangerous, is one of the most underreported crimes.

“We hope through our services and programs we can help educate the community and prevent abuse from occurring in the future,” Schaumann said. “We want survivors of abuse to know they’re not alone, and abuse is not their fault.” One of SVA’s clients is grateful for their services: “Whoever answered the crisis line at 2:30 a.m. reassured me that I was doing the right thing, and my kids are worth being safe. It changed my life, probably saved my life.” SVA’s services include a 24-hour, seven-day-a-week crisis line, crisis intervention assistance, court advocacy, safe housing partnerships, support groups and education. Schaumann also provides training to schools, law enforcement, faith communities and healthcare providers. In addition, SVA partners with the Carver Scott Humane Society to provide temporary foster care for pets to allow victims to focus on safely exiting unhealthy relationships. To better provide services to the area, SVA just broke ground on a new facility in Shakopee. Schaumann said the current Belle Plaine location can’t serve the expanding needs of programming. The more visible location in Shakopee also allows clients easier access to SVA’s services, which include the ability to help walk-in clients. In the spirit of sharing and giving this season, consider giving your time or resources to SVA. With a handful of dedicated staff and much to do, SVA welcomes volunteers of all skills and backgrounds. SVA provides all necessary training needed, and the time commitment varies with each position. Many of the volunteer opportunities can even be done from home. If interested, email volunteer@ svamn.org, or visit the SVA website at http://www.svamn.org/. Jon Anderson has dreamed of being a business owner ever since he was a kid. But September 11th, 2001, detoured his dreams. Luckily on his detours through Iraq and Kuwait, Jon discovered grit in faraway deserts, brought it back to Minnesota, and has put it to work for us.

MI-BOX’S JON ANDERSON IS PUTTING HIS GRIT TO WORK RIGHT HERE IN CARVER COUNTY

Jon spent most of the first two years of his marriage to his wife, Christina, on the other side of the globe. He missed the pregnancy and birth of their second child and describes returning to civilian life as something akin to dying and coming back to life. “The world has moved on without you, so you and your family must figure out how you fit back together.” And that takes time and grit. “It takes grit to succeed,” and Jon has put the grit he learned to work. He started his adventure into moving and mobile storage in a Kuwait desert, making calls to coordinate and determine how he could open a Mi-Box in Minnesota. Overcoming hurdle after hurdle, five years later, he opened Mi-Box in Norwood Young America. They serve Carver County, the whole metro area, and much of greater Minnesota. People have come to expect things to be brought to their door. The convenience works for Mi-Box’s customers, and it pays off in saving them time.

“Entrepreneurship works really well for military people. You got to be willing to take risks. You got to be willing to fail,” and Jon says, “as a veteran, you are used to taking risks.” Jon puts his Army experiences to work every day in his business and uses his company to serve veterans. As a way to support and show gratitude for their service, his business offers discounts to veterans. He has also stored all of the flags for “Flags for Fort Snelling,” a non-profit dedicated to restoring the annual tradition of remembrance in honor of our fallen. His continued service as part of the Minnesota National Guard honors and protects veterans and all Minnesotans. In fulfilling his childhood dream of owning a business, Jon attributes much of his success to the things he learned while serving his country. In all of his travels and studies abroad, and there have been many, Jon has learned one thing about people the world over,

“I can’t stress this enough, the common folk, no matter where you go, they want a job, they want a family, they just want to live.” Thankfully for us, he has settled here in Carver County, using his grit to create jobs, build a family, and help us all live a better life together. We’re reminded in this month of Thanksgiving and Veteran’s Day of our gratitude for those who have served to protect our freedoms. Thank you Jon, for the sacrifices you’ve made and dedication to our country and communities.

that Christmas is next month ✓✓. With most of the effort put into appetizing spreads and scrumptious feasts during the season that’s a little food obsessed, who has time to make things pretty? Contrary to that little voice in your head that’s telling you to put down the “yes” button and step away, this just might be the best time of year to tap into your creative side, take a deep breath, and dabble in a little DIY fall tablescaping. From theme creation to gathering items and seeing your design come to life, creating your own gorgeous tablescape will leave you feeling accomplished and fancy. First, gather rich colors of the season by hand picking flowers from your own backyard such as hydrangeas, sedum or your potted mums, then hang them to dry. Statice, bunny tails, broom corn, and straw flowers are some easy-to-dry options as well. Next, for a timeless dining experience, start with putting out place settings. A neutral cloth placemat is a great place to start. Add layers with a laser-cut wooden placemat or charger, then stack salad plate over border plate and add a napkin. Don’t forget eye-catching glassware and equally stunning flatware to give it shabby chic charm.

You only need to go as far as your front porch to add beautiful finishing touches. The white pumpkins that lined your front steps are perfect small centerpieces at each place setting as a gift to your guests. Weave deep green faux eucalyptus leaves through your tablescape and wrap them around white pumpkins and classic candlesticks. Finish with crisp white taper candles as a stark choice to add atmosphere to your occasion. Much like choosing an outfit with color schemes and accessories, the same is true for the art of setting your table. Changing up the print and texture of your napkins, switching out your color scheme, or getting creative with your glassware has the ability to completely shift the mood. This season, create a warm, rustic arrangement with pops of gold tones and creamy accents to set your table in fall style. Bring the outdoors in with dried foraged delights, sweet Halloween pumpkins, and gratitude place cards for a cozy and inviting atmosphere for you and your guests.

Community Tree Lighting
