Little Vine Vineyard LITTLE VINE VINEYARDS AND WINERY IN VILLA RICA, GEORGIA, IS BRINGING BACK A TRADITION OF FINE WINES ONCE PRODUCED IN WESTERN GEORGIA IN THE 1890S. This area of the state at one time was a major vineyard and winery center with some 20,000 acres planted in bunch grapes before Prohibition. The grapes at Little Vine Vineyards are the first commercial wine grapes planted in West Central Georgia since 1907, and the winery is the first constructed here in more than 100 years. Just as Villa Rica was home to the nation's first gold rush in 1826, Little Vine is striving to reestablish the golden era of winemaking here after a century-long hiatus.

Little Vine Vineyards began preparing the soil for planting in 2010 and planted the first grapes in March 2011. Seven hundred norton and 700 lenoir grape vines were planted on the first 3 acres to start the rebirth of the wine industry. The second 3 acres were planted a year later in 2012. Nine hundred blanc du bois, 350 villard blanc and 55 herbemont grape vines were planted at that time. Friends, neighbors, their church life group members and Vineyard and Winery Association members joined in the planting efforts. This was a new and exciting undertaking for everyone present, especially the owners, Jerry and Sherrie Culver. The fruits of their labor were realized the following year in 2013 with the first harvest. The first 3 acres produced approximately 9.5 tons of grapes. One half-ton of blanc du bois grapes were harvested from the previous year's planting. This day was more exciting than the planting days because they could actually touch, feel, see and taste the fruits of their labor from the previous years. The day was celebrated with good wine, good food and most importantly great friendships nurtured by the sweat of the brow and hands covered with dirt. The wines were developed basically after deciding what grapes to plant. It was necessary to plant hybrid grapes because the European varieties would not grow in this area. The midnight blue or blueberry was developed when the norton variety did not sell well here, and they had to improvise to use the wine. It's one of the winery's top-sellers along with Red Dirt Road Red and Red Dirt Road White and Three Ls.

WE HAVE BEEN REFERRED TO AS “THE CHEERS OF VININGS,” THE PLACE PEOPLE COME TO CONNECT IN GOOD TIMES, AND WELL, NOT-SO-GOOD TIMES.

WHEN FRANK SMITH OPENED SOHO IN 1997 WITH HIS COLLEGE ROOMMATES, HE HADN’T CONSIDERED WHERE HIS RESTAURANT WOULD BE IN 20 YEARS. “Those first few years were tough," he says. "Our goal was to keep the doors open and make the restaurant better each day. Vinings was a quiet, sleepy neighborhood back then compared to today.” Frank, a New Jersey native with 30-plus years of hospitality experience, moved to Atlanta in 1995 to work at Brooklyn Cafe in Sandy Springs. It was there he met his wife, Susan, from Syracuse, New York, a singer and entertainer with her own strong background in restaurants. The couple married in Italy, bought a home in Vinings and planted roots in the small but growing Atlanta suburb. In 2008 they doubled-down on the community where they lived, worked and played and bought out his partners. The Smiths rebranded SOHO as an “American Bistro,” a nod to their favorite European bistros, focusing on a neighborhood atmosphere, a progressive wine list and a flavorful menu that remained a Vinings go-to spot. But it wasn’t always so easy. The economic downturn in 2008 was their biggest learning experience as business owners. “No one knew where the bottom was, especially in our industry," Frank says. When Susan would come home from a shift, and she didn’t tell me the sales for the day, I knew it was bad. But we knew if we could just make it through the great recession, then we would be poised to create a neighborhood establishment for years to come.” Hard work and perseverance proved them right. “Our goal every day was to make SOHO the best we could," Frank says. "On a daily basis, we made sure every guest was happy, and they knew that Susan and I were grateful for their support. The Vinings neighborhood has always supported the local businesses; they are loyal, to say the least.” Reflecting on their 21 years at SOHO, the one element Frank and Susan are most proud of is the people and how SOHO has played a pivotal part in so many lives. “We have had our share of celebrations that all restaurants have—birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, engagements; but when a guest shares with me that they met their future spouse at the restaurant—and it’s happened often—that’s meaningful. We have been referred to as 'the Cheers of Vinings,' the place people come to connect in good times, and well, not-so-good times." Frank remembers 9/11 in particular. “I will never forget the weekend after 9/11; the bar was packed, and people just needed to talk to someone, share stories, to be a part of a community," he says. "To have SOHO be that place for the neighborhood at that time was extraordinary. Hard to believe that it was 17 years ago!” “I can’t talk about SOHO without recognizing the staff,” Frank says with pride. “Working with so many talented and dedicated people from just every part of the country, every age and walk of life—they all have stories. When SOHO can be a positive influence on their lives and help them navigate through the challenges life hands them daily, being someone who is there to just listen or mentor when we can, that’s an unbelievably rewarding emotion. Yeah, it’s definitely the people—that’s what we treasure the most as we approach our 21st anniversary. WHAT HAS CHANGED AT HLS SINCE THE CHANGE IN OWNERSHIP? We’ve kept the menu but added new creations by our chefs, Esteban Garcia and Wilber Cruz. The majority of our fish specials will be made with wild-caught, fresh, sustainable seafood from the Gulf. The environment is important to us, and sustainability ensures that our ocean resources aren't depleted. When the fishing boats come in, we're on the dock waiting. The fish are delivered from the docks to us at HLS. Once they arrive, our chefs filet them in-house. WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE DISH ON THE MENU? I would say the most popular is our grilled salmon picatta, cooked in a light lemon butter sauce, sprinkled with capers and parsley over a bed of sauteed spinach and a side of linguine. Fresh is best. Our guests know the difference between wild-caught fresh fish and frozen farm-raised fish. Several of our guests are from coastal areas, and they tell us it feels like they're back home. WHAT ARE THE CHEFS' CULINARY BACKGROUNDS? Both chefs have numerous years of experience, and they have a culinary background with seafood and Italian dishes. Since our family is of Italian heritage, they thought it would be great to marry the two since there are so many delicious Italian seafood dishes, as well. LOCAL THREE Considered by many to be the best brunch in the land, Local Three has

been serving Vinings for years with an array of delectable lunch and dinner offerings and a brunch menu that changes by the week. For chef Chris Hall, it’s all about innovation and variety. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ITEM ON THE BRUNCH MENU? Our brunch menu changes weekly, so this is a really hard one. It’s kind of like asking which of my kids is my favorite—nearly impossible to do. I think I would say my favorite thing about brunch, in general, is that we get the chance to change the menu all the time and reinvent ourselves! The French toast is definitely a fan favorite. We change it every week, so it never gets old! Also, any of the in-house baked goods from our pastry chef, Gary Scarborough, are a big hit, but those also change weekly. WHAT IS THE MOST POPULAR MAINSTAY ON YOUR BRUNCH MENU? As far as staples go, I would have to say it’s definitely the bacon. We use really high-quality bacon and cook it until it’s nice and golden and delicious. People eat it by the pound! It’s really insane how much bacon we serve. PRO TIP: A little-known secret is that we somewhat recently started serving our famous brunch on Saturday as well. To know pho is to love pho. A traditional Vietnamese dish is a delight to food enthusiasts everywhere. No longer do pho lovers have to make a small pilgrimage to delight in its steamy goodness. The owners of local sushi bar Kuroshiro have brought us Western Atlantans this culinary delight in their newest venture, Pho Dakao. Vinings Lifestyle sat down with owner Khoa Nguyen to give us more insight into his new restaurant and its star player. WHAT EXACTLY IS PHO, AND HOW IS IT PREPARED? Pho (pronounced “fuh”) is a popular Vietnamese soup, a comfort food and a social dish that is best enjoyed together with family and friends. Typically when you think of pho, it is a piping hot bowl of rice noodles in a beef broth served with slices of raw beef that cooks while you're eating, but pho can also come in other varieties such as chicken, tofu and shrimp. Preparing pho is an art. The secret to a great pho is its broth. We simmer our beef bones for 8 hours before the rich essences of the bones are mixed with flavorful herbs and spices, delivering a balanced flavor of star anise, cloves, cinnamon, ginger, onions and beef. WHICH DISH KEEPS PEOPLE COMING BACK? The Pho Combo with eye round steak, flank, brisket, tendons and tripe is our most popular dish which has the full experience of the flavors and textures that most people love about pho. Our pho is garnished with the traditional cilantro, jalapeños, lime and bean sprouts. Sriracha sauce and hoisin sauce are also provided, which people commonly either mix into the soup broth or mix together into a small plate as a dipping sauce for the meats.
