Founded in 1983 by Michael Levine in Dallas, Texas, The Dallas Brass offers a unique fusion of traditional brass instruments and percussion, creating a musical experience that spans classical masterpieces, Dixieland, swing, Broadway, Hollywood, and patriotic tunes. What sets The Dallas Brass apart is not just their exceptional musical prowess but their commitment to enriching communities through music. The ensemble has graced renowned stages such as Carnegie Hall, the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and European venues. Their extensive repertoire is showcased in seven impressive recordings, including "Debut," "A Merry Christmas with Brass," and "American Musical Journey." In addition to public performances, the mission of The Dallas Brass is to actively engage with young musicians to inspire the next generation of musical talent. To do so, the band travels

across the country to collaborate with high school and middle school bands, emphasizing inspiration over instruction. Derek Blankenship, a former professional trumpet player and current Executive Director of the Venice Institute for the Performing Arts (VIPA), fondly recalls just such a high school experience. Engaging in activities locally and globally, LWML provides Christmas gifts for babies at Harvest House, creates quilts for infants baptized in the parish, sends uplifting cards to homebound and hospitalized members, and offers refreshments following funeral or memorial services. Global Outreach: Seeds of Hope with LWML The LWML collaborates with the missionary group Hope Seeds: a Christian charitable ministry that

The group recently completed 3700 seed packages for impoverished communities worldwide. Hope Seeds not only delivers seeds but also educates communities on planting and cultivating their own produce. “America’s Preacher” Has Local History FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH OF VENICE REMEMBERS BILLY GRAHAM

Six years after the departure of the esteemed Christian evangelist, Billy Graham, his enduring spiritual and cultural legacy persists - right here in Venice.

In late 1937 or early 1938, while a student at Florida Bible Institute, Graham received an invitation to preach at the First Baptist Church of Venice, then a young congregation without a permanent pastor. During the sermon, Graham urged parishioners to step forward as a symbol of accepting Jesus Christ, with 11 individuals responding. This was his first "alter call," and it was a precursor to the thousands who would later do the same in his global ministry. Pastor Tom Hodge, referencing church archives, highlighted the warm reception from the First Baptist Church community as the catalyst for Graham's journey as an evangelist. The church archives contain letters and testaments from that time, and a personal note from Graham, emphasizing the lasting impact of that historic event. Though witnesses from Graham's early days in Venice have passed on, their legacy is preserved in these archives. For example, Janice Stephens, a former church historian, recalled the pride felt by older members as they witnessed a young man's calling evolve into a worldwide phenomenon. As the First Baptist Church of Venice continues to honor Graham's legacy during Sunday services, the connection between the revered evangelist and the town remains an integral part of local history, forever etched in the heart of the church and its members.

The Making of ‘A Tribute to First Responders: Past, Present & Future’

How the Leadership Venice Class of 2023 'Gave Back' to the Communit y and Honored Frontline Workers

The Tribute’s Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony was presided over by (LR) Venice Fire & Rescue (VFR) Asst. Chief Kyle Hartley; VFR Chief Frank Giddens; Venice Mayor Nick Pachota; Venice Police Dept. Chief Charlie Thorpe, and Master Police Officer Paul Joyce.

Every year, a select group of professionals and leaders in our community come together in the Venice Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s Leadership Venice program, where they meet top community members and learn all about the ins and outs of our wonderful city. Each Leadership Venice class takes on a major charitable project to complete before graduating from the program. The 2023 Leadership Venice class was an exceptional example in many ways, but especially for its quick decision-making and focused attention to its chosen project: constructing a Tribute to First Responders: Past, Present & Future, in Heritage Park. The centerpiece of the project is a repurposed 30-foot tall flagpole originally used at the site of Fire Station 51 on the City Hall campus.

The pole was set to be discarded after the 46-year-old Fire Station was demolished in 2020. Still, the resourceful Tony Rosen, a maintenance electrician for the City of Venice Public Works, saved and stored it for three years. “During the demolition of Firehouse 51 (in 2020), one of my co-workers called me and said, ‘Hey, Tony, they’re taking down the flagpole. We need to go get it,’” Rosen explained. “I’m a veteran, and one of our jobs at Public Works is to maintain the flagpoles and handle and retire them properly. I care about those things,” he added. Fast forward to early last year. Rosen was talking with colleague Cordy Crane, who is the Executive Assistant to the Venice City Manager, about her participation in Leadership 2023. She told him about the need to initiate and complete a class project to benefit the Venice community. He told her about the flagpole. “Tony told me he had always hoped (the flagpole) could be placed somewhere in the City. I thought it would be the perfect project for our class. Then we came up with the idea of making it a tribute to First Responders,” she said. Crane swiftly created a PowerPoint presentation and distributed it to her classmates

on the first day of Leadership 2023. The next week, “we all voted and agreed to move forward on the project. By default, I became the project coordinator,” she said. Crane divided the class into teams based on their interests and the project’s needs, such as funding, marketing, construction, and design planning. She also built a timeline by working backward from the required completion date in October 2023 and set goals on the calendar to ensure that the project moved along in a timely manner. “What really impressed me was how this class (Leadership 2023) came together so quickly,” said Barbara Hines, Leadership Director for the Venice Area Chamber of Commerce Foundation, which runs the program. “They decided on the project at their second meeting. That has never happened before, and it stood out!” The class also finished on time, which hadn’t occurred before in the five years that Hines has led the program in Venice. Both Rosen and Crane agree that the project couldn’t have happened, especially so swiftly, without the (unofficial) help of Venice Public Works, and Crane’s position in City government. “I was grateful to my Director,” said Rosen. “He just turned me loose and said, ‘do what you need to do.’”

What’s more, Rosen refurbished the flagpole on his own time. “It was a lot of elbow grease and some mechanical buffing to get it polished up and ready,” he said. He also saved everything he could use from the prior setup, rebuilt the anchoring sleeve himself to save money, and purchased and donated an eagle finial for the top of the pole. As for Crane’s participation: “I can’t emphasize enough how hard Cordy worked to get everything to happen. I couldn’t have jumped through all those hoops,” said Rosen. Today, because of the forethought, planning, and hard work of the Venice Leadership Class of 2023, plus donations from many organizations and private citizens (see sidebar), the City of Venice boasts a new area treasure. A Tribute to First Responders: Past, Present & Future is located in the greenspace that runs down the middle of West Venice Avenue from Avenue des Parques to The Esplanade. The area features benches, a paver walkway, a backdrop wall, several plantings, and plaques to honor local police and fire departments. This wonderful addition to the community is open to all. RECIPE FOR CHOCOLATEDIPPED STRAWBERRIES ingredients • Fresh strawberries • Dark or Milk Chocolate (your preference) directions 1. Melt chocolate in a small pan on low heat, or slowly in microwave. 2. Use a skewer to hold each strawberry as you dip and twirl it in the melted chocolate. 3. Set carefully on parchment paper to cool. 4. Once cool, enjoy! Or cover and place in refrigerator for later.

BECAUSE. CHOCOLATE. C h o c o late Fond ue • 2 cups heavy cream • 1 pound premium semisweet chocolate (recommended: Lindt or Callebaut) • 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract • 1 tablespoon brandy • Strawberries, bananas, pineapple, brownies, waffles, marshmallows, Oreos, pound cake, pretzels or any other dipping item of your choice! Put approximately four inches of water in a saucepan and bring to a slow boil. Place a mixing bowl on top and pour in the heavy cream. Let heat. Or, use a double boiler. Meanwhile, break up or chop the chocolate into small pieces. When the cream feels hot to the touch, add chocolate and whisk until smooth. Whisk in vanilla and brandy (optional). Pour into the fondue pot and light the handy fuel underneath. Keep the flame low as not to burn the fondue. Arrange dippers on a platter and enjoy. For the grown-ups, a spiked chocolate drink from our friend, Martha Stewart.

1/2 cup milk 1 cup heavy cream 1/4 cup whole coffee beans 2 ounces semisweet chocolate (61% Valrhona), chopped • 2 tablespoons Kahlua • 1 teaspoon confectioner's sugar • 1 tablespoon dark chocolatecovered coffee beans, chopped In a saucepan over medium heat, combine milk, 1/2 cup cream, and whole coffee beans. Bring to a simmer, turn off heat, cover, and steep beans for 1 hour. Strain liquid and return to saucepan; discard beans. Bring the milk-and-cream mixture back to a simmer, add chocolate, and whisk until incorporated. Remove from heat; whisk in Kahlua. Whip remaining 1/2 cup cream and the confectioners' sugar until soft peaks form. Divide the hot chocolate between 2 cups and garnish each portion with a dollop of whipped cream and a sprinkling of chopped chocolate-covered coffee beans.

When my kids were little, we would address valentines to classmates, deliver flowers to neighbors and decorate the house with hearts and snowflakes (cut from white coffee filters). For dinner, I would make their favorite meal: dessert! Why not? I'd melt chocolate (the good stuff) and let them line up their dippers. They thought dessert for dinner was magical. Of course, I'd fed them a protein-packed after-school snack and served "dinner" early so they could get their sugar wiggles out before bed. Delightful! Happy Valentine's Day!

what you need

2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting 4 large eggs

what you do 1. Mound the flour in the center of a work surface with a well in the middle. Crack the eggs into the well and beat with a fork until smooth, then work flour into eggs with the fork. Use a bench scraper to work in the rest of the flour a little at a time. When the flour is incorporated, form the dough with your hands into a rounded mass for kneading. Lightly dust your workspace with flour and knead dough about 10 minutes, until smooth and elastic. Cover dough with a bowl or plastic wrap and rest 1 1/2 hours, or chill overnight. 2. To roll by hand, flour a clean work surface. Vigorously roll dough to a very thin circle and roll constantly with even pressure as it stretches for several minutes until as thin as possible, almost translucent. 3. Dark Chocolate Truffles what you need 1/2 cup heavy cream 8 ounces bittersweet chocolate, chopped 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 1 cup cocoa powder, for dusting

what you do 1. Bring the cream to just a simmer in a saucepan over low heat. Pour the cream over the chocolate in a bowl and let stand about 10 minutes to melt the chocolate. Add the vanilla, stir until smooth and set aside to cool for 1 hour at room temperature. 2. Beat chocolate at medium speed until thick and light-colored. Spread over the bottom of a baking dish, smooth and refrigerate 2 hours until firm. 3. Pour cocoa powder onto a deep plate or shallow bowl, and using a melon baller or small ice cream scoop, scoop out balls of chocolate.
