SUN PROTECTION 101: ESSENTIAL TIPS FOR HEALTHY SKIN
Dr. Adam Greenberg, M.D., FAAD, Medical Director of Sunshine State Dermatology, offers four key sun protection tips for vibrant and healthy skin in sunny Florida: Sunscreen Wisdom: Frontline defense begins with sunscreen. Dr. Greenberg recommends a minimum of 30 SPF, applied every two hours. Opt for products with "broad spectrum, UVA & UVB protection." He favors eco-friendly options containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. Clothing Matters: Dr. Greenberg emphasizes the effectiveness of clothing with a minimum 30 UPF factor in blocking harmful rays. Stressing full coverage during outdoor activities, especially swimming, he highlights the significance of protective clothing for overall skin health. Hats with UPF: Nurse Practitioner Jessica Wyckoff warns against relying solely on a baseball cap for sun protection. She recommends hats with UPF protection and wide brims to add an extra layer of defense against harmful UV rays. Preventative Dermatology: Dr. Greenberg underscores the critical role of preventative procedures in detecting pre-cancerous sun damage. Regular skin examinations, aided by a dermatoscope, identify subtle changes. Emphasizing the risk of untreated actinic keratoses progressing to squamous cell skin cancer, he advocates timely interventions like cryotherapy or topical treatments for proactive mitigation of sun-induced skin malignancies.
Rejuvenate your skin, by reinventing the way you treat it.
Everyone has the right to feel beautiful inside and out. “By 2030 One Billion people will be 60 or older” Keep them guessing?

Relax For Heart’s Sake
Combat chronic stress for better health!
ARTICLE BY EMILY LEINFUSS

You’re probably aware of the established risk factors for heart disease. High blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, diabetes, obesity, and physical inactivity are well-known culprits. But did you know that your heart’s health is also compromised by chronic stress. “We know that heart disease is a complex condition with many contributing factors – one of which is psychosocial, or psychological stress, confirmed cardiologist Dr. Edmund Bermudez, MD of Sarasota’s First Physicians Group. It is partly the maladaptive behavior that stems from chronic stress–such as anxiety, depression, or lack of sleep–that contrib-

adrenaline prompts an increase in heart rate and blood pressure, which can lead to hypertension. Psychologically, even moderate stress is known to impair self-control: that 'maladaptive' behavior Dr. Bermudez talked about includes overeating, becoming too sedentary, and smoking or using alcohol excessively.

utes to adverse outcomes over time, said Dr. Bermudez. But psychological stress 'has an impact independently of all those other cardiovascular risk factors,' he added.
HOW CHRONIC STRESS COMPROMISES HEALTH
The impact of stress on our health and heart is physical, mental, and behavioral. Physiologically, it activates ‘fight or flight,’ which causes adrenal glands to release the hormones adrenaline and cortisol. Chronic exposure to cortisol can affect functions like metabolism, immune response, and inflammation regulation. In addition,
It's important to note that the physiological impact of stress is complex and interconnected, influencing various systems in the body, and that “everyone feels and reacts to stress differently,” said Bermudez. However, for the most part, the effects of stress manifest slowly over time – with one clear exception.

complications, including heart failure. While it's often reversible, broken-heart syndrome underscores the close link between emotional well-being and physical health, noted Dr. Bermudez.
TOP STRESS REDUCERS FOR YOUR HEART HEALTH
Dr. Bermudez explained that the sudden onset of intense stress can cause “broken heart syndrome,” which is also called stress-induced cardiomyopathy or takotsubo syndrome: when part of the heart enlarges and doesn’t pump as effectively. This could be brought on by the death of a loved one or even a divorce, breakup or betrayal. The symptoms of stress-induced cardiomyopathy mimic the chest pain and difficulty breathing experienced during a heart attack, but it’s not caused by blocked arteries. It is believed to result from a surge in stress hormones that temporarily stun the heart muscles. Takotsubo syndrome gets its name from the Japanese word "takotsubo," meaning octopus trap, because the affected heart takes on a shape that resembles the pot used for trapping the eight-armed mollusks. Although the change is temporary, weakening of the heart's left ventricle can lead to serious

While it may not be possible to get ahead of something as sudden as broken-heart syndrome, there are many roads to reducing stress and increasing our health. • Exercise: The most reliable way to combat the harmful effect of stress on our heart and health is exercise. “We know that exercise really does help manage chronic stress, and that it also can have a positive benefit on mood and behavior,’ said Dr. Bermudez. It also helps decrease the risk of heart disease by improving overall cardiovascular health. Aim for 150 minutes of moderate intensity a week, he added. • Quality Sleep: Prioritizing quality sleep is a fundamental aspect of maintaining heart health. Establishing good sleep hygiene practices, such as a consistent sleep schedule, creating a comfortable sleep environment, and managing stress, can positively impact your overall cardiovascular wellbeing. • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. CBT focuses on identifying and altering negative thought patterns and behaviors that contribute to stress. Over time, it can help reduce the risk of chronic health issues associated with prolonged stress, such as cardiovascular problems and compromised immune function. • Become a Pet Owner: Pets are known to help manage anxiety, and even depression, by providing

companionship and support. Taking care of one’s pet also helps you to become more active–an important goal in stress-reduction and heart health. • Go Outdoors: Spending time in nature is known to offer many physical, mental, and emotional health benefits including stress reduction, improved mental wellbeing, improved sleep quality, and more. When considering the factors associated with heart health, chronic stress is often overlooked. But understanding its impact is crucial. Furthermore, strategies such as regular exercise, getting quality sleep, and other stress-management tactics are a great way to reduce stress, increase heart health, and improve one’s overall quality of life.

Celebrating Venice City Lifestyle’s 5th Anniversary with GRATITUDE
ENGAGE , INSPIRE & CONNECT 40
LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | L I FE + CU LT U RE
First and foremost, in celebrating Venice City Lifestyle’s fifth year in print (we launched in January of 2019) I owe all my gratitude to the many business owners who have partnered with me since day one and who are still my partners and great friends. I thank you for trusting and believing in me when I presented you with nothing more than a mockup, a vision, a dream, and shared my passion for how we could all together make a huge impact in our community! No pandemic or natural disaster in these past hard-pressed years has stopped us. Your loyalty has allowed us to continue to help brand your businesses, products, and services, all of which continue to add value to our community’s economy. It has also given us the opportunity to share hundreds of heartfelt stories with our thousands of readers locally and nationally on a monthly basis. I honor each and every one of you, as well as those who have joined us in recent years. Thank you for celebrating our 5th Anniversary with us! Your tributes in the following pages literally brought me to tears! Our impact in the community greatly expands as we all grow together! It is about the people, and yes, the dollars keep us all in business and enable us to survive and thrive, as well as to give back to those in need. But ultimately, it’s we the people who encourage and impact each other. My “why” is to “Engage, Inspire, and Connect” the hearts of the people and businesses in our lovely community, giving each of us a sense of belonging, a purpose, and a desire to help support each other in good times and not so good times. That, in turn, helps our community bond and flourish together! Venice City Lifestyle’s purpose is to inspire community engagement by sharing heartfelt stories, informative information about a local business, a nonprofit in need, an event to connect with others, recognition, participation in a community project, cheering on in support of each other’s wins, and being there to comfort in their losses. We’ve come a long way in the past five years. We started as “Venice Lifestyle,” and our first year was nothing short of amazing. We won two Addy Awards for our December 2019 cover, “Believe,” a word I live by and actually wear a “Believe” ring that reminds me to keep believing everyday.
The year 2020 was full of heartache and loss for everyone. However, the silver lining that kept us in business was that we direct mail to homes and businesses, and that our parent, Lifestyle Publications, introduced a technology-forward digital platform that was both national, at CityLifestyle.Com and local, at CityLifestyle. Com/Venice. That’s when we changed our name to Venice City Lifestyle: effectively combining our print and digital presence countrywide! We also became a 2020 Finalist for Small Business of the Year. Then, at the end of 2023, Venice City Lifestyle was honored to become Venice’s 2023 Small Business of the Year award winner. 2023 has been a life changing experience for me and the growth of Venice City Lifestyle. My acceptance into the Venice Area Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s Fifth Annual Leadership Class has opened doors to many business opportunities: priceless friendships and bonds were created between classmates and our amazing Leader, Barbara Hines. You’ll learn all about it in our February issue, “Love Local”. They say—whoever “they” are—that most small businesses take at least two to three years to be profitable and become truly successful once they’ve hit the seven to 10-year mark. Businesses are built over years, not months, according to Forbes Magazine, and I agree. There’s lots more to come! As we wrap up our 5th Anniversary year, I’m looking forward to an amazing 2024. But I would be remiss not to recognize everyone who contributed to the growth and success of Venice City Lifestyle. That’s my first Editor, Tony D’Souza, and Harald & Petra Prion of Prion Photography, along with my current Editor, Emily Leinfuss, Stephanie Snow of Stephanie Snow Photography, and the City Lifestyle Team in Kansas City. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart for helping me create a high-quality, luxury-focused publication that is inspired by our community! Thank you, Venice, let’s continue to grow together! Passionately, Charmaine Tincher Owner/Publisher

The Lapiplasty Advantage for Bunion Relief EXPERT ADVICE FROM PREMIER FOOT & ANKLE SPECIALISTS
“The Lapiplast y procedure dramatically reduces the risk of bunion recurrence with almost 100 percent of patients maintaining correction after one year”
Have you heard of the “new bunion procedure” called Lapiplasty? Is it really as great as the advertisements say? Let’s discuss it! A bunion, otherwise known medically as hallux abductovalgus, is an angular deformity of the great toe and the bone behind it (the first metatarsal) creating a prominence at the great toe joint. Studies show that approximately one-third of the adult population suffers from this often painful condition. A common misconception is that a bunion is a simple overgrowth of bone that can “just be shaved off”. The root cause of a bunion is a muscle and tendon imbalance. Our foot is meant to function in a “neutral position” causing less stress, strain and inflammation on the muscles, tendons, joints and ligaments of the foot. When the arch is supported and the heel is in a closed backed shoe, this “neutral position” can be obtained and sustained. Our natural body weight wants to flatten out the arch when standing causing an “un-neutral position” which causes unnecessary stress, strain and inflammation of the muscles, tendons, joints and ligaments of the foot causing

muscle and tendon imbalances and progressive deformities like bunions. Bunion deformities can be hereditary and those typically occur in the earlier years of life. One more important point is that arthritis in the great toe joint complicates a bunion and changes the treatment plan; this can only be identified and diagnosed on x-rays by your podiatrist. Not every patient with bunions needs surgery. Depending on anatomy or the severity of deformity, activity level, age and health, nonsurgical treatments may be enough to manage mild to moderate pain. Again, your podiatrist can help aid you in these treatments and decisions. The traditional correction of a bunion, otherwise known as a bunionectomy, has a non-weight bearing period anywhere from 4-8 weeks. Also, recurrence rates are very high and range from approximately 20-80 percent. Lapiplasty is a procedure that corrects the bunion farther back in the foot using advanced instrumentation and corrects the deformity in all 3-dimensions.
This restores the metatarsal to the proper alignment and reduces the bunion deformity while naturally removing the bump and straightening the toe. The unstable joint is then fused with small plates and screws which permanently secures the correction. The Lapiplasty procedure dramatically reduces the risk of bunion recurrence with almost 100 percent of patients maintaining correction after one year. The procedure technology and advanced fixation also allow most patients to weightbear, protected in a boot, within days of the surgery, much less than the average six weeks after a traditional osteotomy bunionectomy. Dr. Roggow and Dr. Bonjorno are not only trained and certified with Lapiplasty, our doctors are board certified and provide excellent conservative and surgical treatment of all conditions of the foot and ankle. Besides surgery, they specialize in wound care below the knee and diabetic lower extremity care. Please make an appointment with the office (premierfootandanklefl.com) to have your feet evaluated!
