As I sit down to write this it feels like summer, including hurricane season and the year 2022, is finally in the rearview mirror. I am, like many of you, very much looking forward to the months ahead. It seems to me that cooler weather makes it easier to imagine making changes to improve our Health & Wellness, and that’s what this issue of Venice City Lifestyle is all about. For many of us, the idea of a New Year’s resolution presents an opportunity to reset some of our goals. For others, it can recall the frustration of less-than-successful attempts from years gone by. That’s why we approached this issue from a mindset of making long-term changes one step at a time. A plant-based diet – mainly fruits, vegetables, and whole grains – has been found to improve our health. But no one said it was easy to shift from another way of eating. “Eat for Your Life” suggests we pick just one new, disease-fighting food to try at a time. Sports figures and celebrities – along with many of our neighbors – are all flocking to the pickleball courts. Maybe that’s because it’s easy to learn and a fun way to get exercise. Until recently, however, it was hard to find pickleball-specific fashion. “Pickleball in Style” remedies that lack. This fashion feature reveals some of the top pickleball looks, brands, and accessories, many of which are now available at Venice’s Kristine Grace Resort Wear. As Village On The Isle celebrates its 40th anniversary, CEO Doug Feller reviews the million-dollar improvements implemented at the continuing care retirement community over the past seven years. I’m sure you’ll agree that VOTI “Has it All for Active Seniors.” 2022’s hurricane season may be over but that doesn’t mean its impact isn’t still being felt here in Venice and with our neighbors just south of us. Luckily, companies like Mattamy Homes are doing what they can to help our communities recover from Hurricane Ian. Nothing happens all at once: not coming back from disaster or developing more healthy habits. I think making incremental changes – and not having to be perfect – is what can lead to a more peaceful, filling, and fabulous 2023. Speaking of FABULOUS, Happy Birthday to my granddaughter Emily! "Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food." This famous adage is attributed to 4th Century Greek physician Hippocrates, who was one of the first people to link food closely to health. Although, for Hippocrates, food was not to be confused with actual medicine. Maybe that distinction, that food is food and medicine is medicine, is still true, but today's science about the impact of food on our mental and physical health informs us somewhat differently. Research has shown that specific foods, essential nutrients, and certain dietary patterns will boost our level of health and decrease our risk of chronic disease. One finding I particularly support is that diets high in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and other plant foods, and low in simple carbohydrates – such as the Mediterranean diet – are linked to a reduced risk of inflammation, cardiovascular disease, certain cancers, and lower rates of chronic disease. Recent findings also show that the Mediterranean diet may reduce the accumulation of belly fat specifically, according to Consumer Reports. Fat stored in the abdomen is more harmful to health than fat stored in the hips or thighs, raising the risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes. That’s why, after clients lose weight through my 26-day detox and phased diet plan, I advocate for the Mediterranean diet. It's a life-long, healthy way of maintaining weight loss and improving longevity. What's more, certain foods, spices and drinks have been identified as powerful health builders and disease busters. Here are some of the most promising.

• Berries: Blackberries, blueberries, raspberries, and strawberries are a rich source of numerous phytochemicals that research suggests have a variety of positive effects on human health, including reducing chronic inflammation and cancer risk. • Broccoli: Broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables contain a number of phytonutrients that have been shown to reduce inflammation and oxidative stress, which has benefits for cardiovascular health, healthy blood sugar and cancer prevention. • Cinnamon: Cinnamon has been found to have blood sugar-balancing attributes, even with just ½ teaspoon a day. • Cranberries: Research suggests that cranberries may prevent urinary tract infections, possibly because they prevent bacteria from adhering to cells inside the bladder. Opt for pure cranberry juice, rather than juices with added other juices and sweeteners • Pomegranates: The seeds of the pomegranate are packed with antioxidants and are high in vitamin C and potassium. Plus, the seeds are a great source of fiber. • Fish: The omega-3 fatty acids in fish have anti-inflammatory properties. The American Heart Association recommends eating at least two 3.5-ounce servings of fatty fish each week, such as salmon or black cod, to help prevent cardiovascular disease. • Garlic: According to the American Institute for Cancer Research, there is probable evidence that garlic and other members of the allium family (onions, leeks, shallots, scallions) reduce the risk of developing common cancers. • Ginger and turmeric: These spices are known to have anti-inflammatory and analgesic (pain-relieving) properties. Ginger also can help ease nausea and vomiting. • Green tea: The phytochemical EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate) in green tea has been shown to have some anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory effects and may have heart health benefits. • Nuts: Studies have shown nuts to be helpful for cardiovascular function and healthy blood sugar and weight levels.

The Mediterranean diet is a lifestyle approach to healthy eating that includes a balanced variety of foods.

Word of advice: you don't have to make these dietary changes all at once. Just pick one or two from this list to add to your diet (and consider eliminating one of the 'worst' foods at the same time) and see how much better you feel. As it celebrates its 40th anniversary, Village On The Isle (VOTI) has been taking stock of all the improvements it’s implemented to continue its reign as one of the most preeminent continuing care retirement communities on the Gulf Coast of Florida. In January 2016, the not-for-profit, faith-based organization launched a $100 million, 10-year expansion plan for its 16-acre campus. Since then, VOTI constructed the Emerald Terraces: 48 independent living apartment-homes ranging from 1,250 to 1,620 square feet – all with walkout balconies. It also constructed a 66,000 sq. ft. replacement Health Center as a stateof-the-art facility, with 64 private rooms, and amenities for residents who may need around-the-clock nursing care, or short-term rehabilitative support. The Health Center houses the Tidewell Care Center at VOTI, with eight private suites that provide dedicated inpatient hospice services. VOTI has also renovated its assisted living residences and memory care facilities, is currently updating the décor in other buildings, and still has more construction to go. “Our goal for our independent living residents is to live their lives just as they did in their prior homes. We

want them to enjoy the freedom to do what they want, whenever they want to,” explains CEO Doug Feller. The community “has a very friendly, family-like atmosphere,” he adds. The lifestyle for retirees at VOTI is purposeful and active – on the property and because it is located right on Venice Island, close to the beaches and downtown Venice. On campus, VOTI offers a broad range of services and amenities, with a full calendar of events featuring a mix of social, cultural, spiritual, educational, health/wellness, and service-oriented recreation. Location-wise, “Venice Island has a different kind of flair,” says Doug. “I have a resident who tells me that he’s always wanted to live on 'The Island'. He calls his place here ‘his island condo.’” Another element of premier living at VOTI is dining. Renovation was completed on the 10,000 sq. ft. Hibiscus Dining Room – to the look and feel of a fine restaurant – in time for Valentine’s Day 2021. The cuisine was also upgraded, says Doug.
