Holidays & Giving
CONTR IBUTING WR ITER S
The holiday season has officially arrived, bringing cheer, love, and the spirit of giving. Our wonderful city is bursting with seasonal displays and decorations. In balmy Venice, however, expect the unique touch of Floridian festivity: palm trees adorned with lights and tropical flowers in vibrant bloom, seamlessly blending into the seasonal joy. At Venice City Lifestyle, we consistently spotlight the exceptional. In our December Holidays & Giving issue, we are showcasing Boca Grande District Fire Chief, CEO of Fire Ninja, and President of Respect First Responders (R1R) Peter Kirvin. Peter's mission is to ensure the safety of frontline workers and our community. Witness the sheer beauty of movement in our photography-rich feature on the Sarasota Ballet’s 2023-2024 Season. There are still five programs of timeless choreography to be unveiled through April 2024! Moreover, on December 8 & 9, 2023, The Sarasota Ballet School will grace the stage with “The Nutcracker” at the Venice Performing Arts Center. Venice City Lifestyle is both pleased and honored to sponsor these captivating performances. No holiday issue is complete without a local gift guide. This year, immerse yourself in “Gifts with a Beachy Vibe,” curated by Downtown Wellen Park’s Breakwater Home Fashions. There's also our health feature from AMA Health Providers on how to “Navigate Holiday Eating with a Digestive Disorder.” The act of giving – to my children and grandchildren, and to Venice, my beloved city – is always close to my heart. I found it intriguing to discover that giving doesn't just benefit others. Dive into “The Power of Generosity” to learn why “Giving is Good for You & the World.” In this edition, we also shine a light on two generous local organizations. Epiphany Cathedral Catholic School's "Go Gold Day" champions childhood cancer research, and Lakeside Lutheran Church, together with World Renew and United Way, is sending repair teams to homes impacted by Hurricane Ian. Last, but certainly not least, our parent company, City Lifestyle, is spearheading its “4th Annual Giving Campaign.” Delve into the details and learn how you can nominate those who could use a supportive hand. Together, let's uplift and inspire! From all of us at Venice City Lifestyle, we wish you the absolute best during this most wonderful time of the year! Brightmore, Soléa and Grand Living bring vibrant 55+ lifestyles to Wellen Park
Brightmore, Soléa Wellen Park and Grand Living at Wellen Park, three different neighborhoods designed to redefine and elevate the active, engaging and social lifestyles for residents ages 55 and over, have debuted in Wellen Park, one of the nation’s top-selling communities. Sales of single-family homes and paired villas in Brightmore, Wellen Park’s first active adult community, began late 2023. Rental apartments in Soléa Wellen Park, a 55+ neighborhood, is planned for move-ins starting in February 2024. The recently opened Grand Living offers independent, assisted living and memory care, an active social lifestyle, and the convenience of dining, shopping, entertainment and outdoor recreation in Downtown Wellen. “These neighborhoods provide options for both Wellen Park residents who want to age in place and for their loved ones,” said Rick Severance, president of Wellen Park. “All of these neighborhoods will offer residents incredible amenities, a sense of community and a place to call home.” Brightmore features Mattamy Homes’ award-winning floor plans and a fun-filled lifestyle founded on a novel concept of 55+ living that’s rooted in well-being, an emphasis on social connections and new experiences, and future certification as an EnergyStar community with green, sustainable and healthy living features. The neighborhood offers over 600 one-story homes on cul-de-sac streets and homesites nestled along scenic ponds, lakes and wetland preserves. Sparrow Partners is introducing maintenance-free living for active adults at Soléa Wellen Park, its first Florida community offering rental apartments, private resort-style amenities and a full-time activity director coordinating daily resident socials, lifelong learning experiences, happy hours, activities and weekly fitness classes. The gated petfriendly community features four-story buildings with 204 one- and two-bedroom apartments ranging from 680 to 1,285 square feet under air.
Grand Living at Wellen Park offers luxury senior living with 156 independent and assisted living apartments, 36 memory care units and abundant amenities throughout its four-story building. Residences range from 450 to 1,300 square feet of living space and include studios, one- and two-bedroom apartments, and options with dens. Twobedroom plus den cottages with two-car garages are also available for lease. Wellen Park’s focus on well-being is designed to give residents greater opportunities to take care of themselves and encourage healthy vibrant lifestyles. Access to highquality, close-to-home healthcare is a top priority for Wellen Park and its current and future residents. Wellen Park continues to attract primary care physicians, specialists and medical facilities dedicated to serving the community, one of the fastest-growing in Florida – and the United States. “With easy access to quality healthcare for residents and various residential options, we have created a haven in Wellen Park for seniors to age gracefully in place,” Severance said. “Convenient access to top-rated primary doctors, specialists, urgent care and medical centers always factors into the decision of where to live. Seniors will find the perfect blend of independence, community and the assurance of first-class healthcare within Wellen Park.” Brightmore, Solea and Grand Living all offer a set of amenities that can make these neighborhoods an enjoyable place to live during their golden years. Residents can experience the very best of life, all while staying in an environment that is familiar, comfortable, and safe. In Wellen Park, aging in place is more than just a concept; it’s a promise for seniors who seek a vibrant lifestyle and accessible healthcare. To learn more about 55+ living at Wellen Park, call 941-271-0116, go to wellenpark.com or visit the Welcome Center at 12275 Mercado Drive in Venice, Fla.

TIPS & STRATEGIES FROM AMA HEALTH PROVIDERS ARTICLE BY AMA HEALTH PROVIDERS The holiday season is here, which means lots of delicious food, drinks, and festivities. This is often challenging for people, especially those with digestive issues. Multiple gastroenterological issues including acid reflux, celiac disease, chronic pancreatitis, irritable bowel syndrome, lactose intolerance, amongst others can be triggered by the abundance of holiday food and drink. Jaime Baquero, MD, a gastroenterologist at AMA Health Providers, advises everyone to be mindful of their eating habits during this time. He suggests eating small meals that are low in fat and high in fiber, avoiding excess alcohol and listening to your body. It's easy to lose control at large gatherings, so paying attention to what you eat and pacing yourself can help you stay comfortable throughout the season. It's important for everyone to pay attention to their body's reactions to food, not just those with digestive disorders. Symptoms like feeling full quickly, persistent diarrhea, or unexplained weight loss could be signs of a more serious condition. If you experience these changes, it's advisable to speak with your primary care provider, who may refer you to a gastroenterologist. Additionally, family history plays a significant role in certain conditions like celiac disease, inflammatory bowel disease, and colon cancer, so it's worth discussing with your loved ones. If you are experiencing digestive health issues, speak with your primary care provider or give Dr. Baquero a call at 941.559.0262 or to learn more, go to AMAHealthProviders.com.

EPIPHANY CATHEDRAL CATHOLIC SCHOOL’S GO GOLD DAY
Epiphany Cathedral Catholic School students, teachers and staff helped make "Go Gold" a success!
Participating in "Go Gold Day" is empowering for children.
STUDENTS, TEACHERS & STAFF SHINE BRIGHTLY IN SUPPORT OF CHILDHOOD CANCER RESEARCH At Epiphany Cathedral Catholic School, giving back is a core value. This was evident during "Go Gold Day," a recent event supporting childhood cancer research held, this year, in honor of Hannah Shroyer – the younger sister of Epiphany students Hayden and Hunter Shroyer. Hannah was only two years old when she was diagnosed with Stage 4 High Risk Neuroblastoma and a brain tumor. Thankfully, after years of treatment, she has been cancer free since 2021! Held annually at Epiphany since 2018, Go Gold Day 2023 successfully raised more than $2200 from tee-shirt sales. Those funds are directed toward the Tampa-based Children’s Cancer Center, which provides emotional, financial, and educational support to children and families grappling with pediatric cancer or chronic blood disorders. As part of an ongoing expansion, the non-profit currently supports 30 families in Sarasota and Manatee counties.

Go Gold Day is not just about fundraising; it’s about compassion, awareness, and support. It empowers kids to stand up for and with their peers, to show benevolence and empathy, and to be part of the solution: research. Similarly, the “Gold” in Go Gold Day stands for much more than a color. It symbolizes the intrinsic value and indomitable spirit of children battling cancer. Schools like Epiphany make a difference by demonstrating the power of supporting one’s community by giving back. When a community unites for a purpose, it can create significant and beneficial outcomes. Epiphany would like to thank the vendors who offered their talents and services pro bono. That includes Venice Aerial Photography for the amazing aerial photos of the whole school, including faculty and staff, and @graphicsbyjason for designing and printing the Gold Day tee-shirts.

Peter Kirvin’s journey to where he is today is an outstanding example of how dedication, passion, and a desire to serve can lead to remarkable achievements. A District Chief with the Boca Grande fire department, Peter's life and career are centered around one simple philosophy – giving back. His story starts in the aftermath of Hurricane Andrew. Working as a roofer at the time, Peter realized that he didn’t want a job that required doing the same thing over and over. It was during this search for purpose that some friends introduced him to volunteer firefighting, and he found his calling. "I fell in love with helping others, and there was always something different," says the Sarasotaborn Peter. Peter began volunteering at the Nokomis Fire Department in 2000 and was hired in 2002. He started working at the Boca Grande Fire Department a few years later while continuing to volunteer in Nokomis – until he was promoted: first to Lieutenant and then, in 2022, to Boca Grande District Chief. But his journey didn't stop there. After noticing various inadequacies in safety equipment, Peter took matters
into his own hands, thus birthing the company Fire Ninja (FireNinja.com) in 2012. "There were certain things you always wished you had on the job," he says. From safety glasses to vests, Peter's objective was clear – to ensure the men and women on the frontline had the best equipment. But it wasn't just about producing quality safety equipment: the mission was personal for Peter. He shares an incident where an eye injury to one of his team members became a catalyst for change. "At the time, safety glasses were hideous. No one wanted to wear them. I did a cool design, and it got traction." Peter's designs resonated with the needs of the firefighters. "I'm an officer. I'd get off the truck, like at a car accident, and I’d look back to see my guys fumbling with their safety vests," Peter recalls. His solution? The Ultrabright – a patent-pending vest designed for quick and safe use. What stands out in Peter's journey is his determination to give back. In 2020 this sentiment led to the birth of R1R (Respect 1st Responders), a nonprofit dedicated to helping emergency responders worldwide. “Everything developed organically,” he explains. “I have family in

Guatemala and, in 2018, after Volcano Feugo erupted, we donated thousands of vests and cooling towels.” From there, the giving grew. Today, R1R (r1r.org) operates as a hub for a network of over 120 distributors by collecting and rapidly sending out essential equipment to where it’s needed, whether domestically or internationally. Looking back at Hurricane Ian, Peter recalls the dire need for equipment. "Firefighters were out there for 12, 13 hours. Maybe they needed a pop-up tent, a cooling towel, or an extra set of gloves." He highlighted the importance of Fire Ninja's Sub Zero Cooling Towel, a crucial piece of gear during such disasters. "It holds a reservoir of water. Whip it around, and it stays cold," he explained. When asked about how it feels to give back, Peter's humility shines through. "That's a weird question for me. It's not different from what I do as a firefighter. I’m looking to get help to people." His initiatives have extended internationally, with training programs for the Bombaros (firefighters) in Mexico, aiming to equip them with better resources. Aside from his commitment to firefighting, Peter's passion extends to self-defense training, notably Jiu-Jitsu. In 2019, he established the Fire Ninja Training Center in order to empower first responders with the skills to handle intense and potentially dangerous situations. Looking to the future, both Fire Ninja and R1R have ambitious plans. "I have six patents in the works. The next couple of years will be huge for Fire Ninja," says Peter. Today, Peter has two goals for R1R. The first is to build emergency pallets that can be dispatched immediately during crises. The second is to develop and streamline the logistics that get things where they need to go – emergency-level fast! Both goals need funding! Members of the community can find out more on how to help on the Fire Ninja website by going to fireninja.com/r1r-donations-501c3.

“THROUGHOUT THE SEASON WE’VE BEEN ENTRUSTED TO PERFORM REMARKABLE AND PRESTIGIOUS WORKS, WHICH NOT ONLY HIGHLIGHT OUR INCREDIBLE COMPANY, BUT ALSO THE EXTRAORDINARY ARTS THAT SARASOTA HAS TO OFFER.”
The Sarasota Ballet’s upcoming 2023-24 season promises an enchanting blend of beauty, heartbreak, and artistry. Featuring a range of repertoire from world-renowned choreographers and composers, the season also offers a series of world and company premieres juxtaposed alongside works by some of the world’s most beloved figures. Company Director Iain Webb is excited about the upcoming performances, especially knowing he will stay on with Sarasota Ballet for at least ten more years. “This is an important Season not just for The Sarasota Ballet,” notes Webb. “Throughout the Season we’ve been entrusted to perform remarkable and prestigious works, which not only highlight our incredible Company, but also the extraordinary arts that Sarasota has to offer,” says Webb. This season’s shows will be staged across two venues in Sarasota – the FSU Center for the Performing Arts, which The Sarasota Ballet shares with Asolo Repertory Theatre, and the Sarasota Opera House. In addition, live music performed by the Venice Symphony will accompany Programs 3, 6 and 7, and special performances by The Sarasota Ballet School of “The Nutcracker” are scheduled for Venice – at the Venice Performing Arts Center on Dec. 8-9, and at the Sarasota Opera House on December 17-18. The Venice performances are proudly sponsored by Venice City Lifestyle. While the company holds a special place for Sir Frederick Ashton's creations, highlighted by its current invitation to perform Ashton chorography for a week in 2024 at The Royal Ballet in London, the season also honors other choreographic legends. This is front and center in Program 3, (December 15-16), which opens with George Balanchine’s “Theme and Variations,” and closes with Twyla Tharp’s “In the Upper Room.”

A trio of works by resident choreographer Ricardo Graziano, including one world premiere, make up Program 4 (January 26-29, 2024). “Sonatina” is one of Graziano’s most classical works, followed by Graziano’s 11th oneact world premiere for the Sarasota Ballet. Closing the Program is the choreographer’s most critically acclaimed work, “In a State of Weightlessness,” which received its world premiere during the ballet’s week-long residency at the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival in 2015. Each year, The Sarasota Ballet presents a visiting company as a part of its season to provide audiences with a different insight and connection to the art of dance. For Program 5 (March 8-11, 2024) Ballet Hispanico will be exploring the diversity of Latino Culture through a fusion of Classical, Latin, and Contemporary dance. George Balanchine is again featured in Program 6 (April 5-6, 2024). The evening of reprises features the “Emeralds” section of his full-length “Jewels” and the Gershwininspired “Who Cares?.” That bookends Kenneth MacMillan’s dramatic “Las Hermanas,” a dance version of Federico Garcia Lorca’s haunting play “The House of Bernarda Alba.” Program 7 (April 26-27, 2024) will begin with Tony Award winning choreographer Christopher Wheeldon’s “The American,” bringing to life the tranquility and open sky of America’s Great Plains. Company premiere, “Lyric Pieces,” by acclaimed choreographer Jessica Lang – who joined the Company this Season as Artist in Residence – follows with an engaging and visually dynamic creation. Closing Program 7, and the 2023 – 2024 Season as whole, will be Sir Frederick Ashton’s “Sinfonietta,” an exciting and fiendishly difficult abstract work.

The Power of Generosity GIVING IS GOOD FOR YOU & THE WORLD
ARTICLE BY EMILY LEINFUSS
We all recognize that giving – of your time, talents, or treasure – helps others. But did you know that the act of giving has scientifically proven benefits for our own brain and overall health? Here’s how.
UNDERSTANDING THE BENEFITS OF GIVING 1. Emotional Rewards: Every time you decide to give or be kind, your brain's pleasure centers light up. It's not just about feeling good in the moment; it's a scientifically backed boost to your well-being. 2. Volunteering is Healthy: People who volunteer say they feel healthier, have higher self-esteem, and are more satisfied with life. They often feel a rush of euphoria, thanks to the release of endorphins, our body's feel-good chemicals. See page 43 for a list of places to volunteer right here in Venice. 3. The Science Behind It: When we act selflessly, our brain's mesolimbic pathway gets activated. This releases happiness chemicals like dopamine. This means that acts of generosity can make us feel content, peaceful, and purposeful.
Neuroscientific research shows giving helps light up the brain in positive ways.
42
LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | HEA LTH + W E LLNE S S
4. Chemicals of Kindness: When individuals extend generosity, their brain releases a mix of “feel good” chemicals such as serotonin, which elevates mood; dopamine, known to induce feelings of pleasure; and oxytocin, which enhances our connection to others.
In conclusion, the act of giving, coupled with a mindset of gratitude and positivity, offers dual rewards: it betters the world around us and significantly enriches our personal well-being.
THE POWER OF POSITIVE THINKING
PLACES TO VOLUNTEER IN VENICE:
Focusing on positive thoughts and practicing gratitude are also linked to improved mental and physical health. Focusing on gratitude can improve your thinking skills, because the brain area controlling emotions also affects our ability to focus. But the opposite is true too. Continually thinking negatively pulls resources from your brain's thinking center, making clear thought more difficult. Positive thinking can also reshape the brain due to its adaptability. This is called 'plasticity.’ Consistent positive thinking can eventually improve our relationships, our health, and our goal achievement. The results are similar when a person simply acts with kindness towards others. Renowned psychologist Susan Albers, PsyD, highlights, "Acts of kindness don't just benefit recipients. They amplify our own sense of purpose and happiness, contributing to overall well-being."

Giving Campaign

O UR TOWN | L IFE + CU LTURE
“
This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”
The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.” “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds. City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep giving on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is truly rewarding and it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster a culture of generosity.”

Tips for creating the perfect board: • Start with the larger items first and build around those. If you are using jars on the board, place those first. • Be sure to have enough to fill the space. it is best to overfill so that the board doesn’t look sparse. Stack, stack and stack some more. • Use a variety of colors and textures when choosing the foods you want to use. Pick cheese with color and patterns, fruits and veggies that come in a variety of textures and colors and a protein that can make a statement. • Be sure to place similar colors in away from each other to help give symmetry.
