The Landing Fishing Pier, Oakheart Nature Trail and Harvest Community Garden ELEVATE THE OUTDOOR EXPERIENCE IN WELLEN PARK

The simple pleasures of enjoying nature and time spent outside – whether following a trail less traveled, waiting for a tug on a fishing line or digging into the rich soil of a garden bed – will become easier to embrace with brand-new outdoor experiences in Wellen Park that are soon opening. Novel natural experiences and incredible outdoor recreation enhance the quality of life for residents and visitors, nurturing a sense of community, well-being and environmental stewardship. Imaginative, immersive and innovative opportunities celebrate the benefits of nature and community connections created by shared experiences, while new outdoor destinations introduce even more exciting ways of elevating the bond between nature and neighbors. Wellen Park’s new fishing pier, and soon-to-be open community garden and nature trail complement the community’s 30 miles of multimodal trails, parks and Downtown Wellen’s recreation options. They also champion its focus on sustainability and environmental assets. “Research consistently demonstrates the healing properties of nature and water, its abilities to ease stress, enhance wellbeing and inspire positive thinking,” said Rick Severance, president of Wellen Park. “Our community is dedicated to providing residents with engaging and unique active and leisure opportunities within the natural environment. We look forward to introducing these incredible new outdoor experiences.” Nestled along the shores of the Grand Lake across from downtown’s Solis Hall, The Landing Fishing Pier debuted this summer, offering a modern interpretation of a favorite fishing hole with a shade structure and a pier extending above the water. It’s already a preferred destination for local fishing enthusiasts hoping to land the lake’s bounty of catch-andrelease largemouth bass, channel catfish, redear sunfish, bluegill and threadfin shad. On-site tackle sales, rentals and live bait at Kind Vibes

Outfitters accommodate spur-of-the moment fishing expeditions at The Landing and along a 3-mile loop trail encircling the Grand Lake. The magic of technology also allows anglers to map out their strategy in the time-honored quest of not letting the big one get away. A QR code at the red marker near downtown’s floating dock provides a smartphone link previewing and animating the lake’s variety of fish species. The 2-acre Harvest Community Garden and future Oakheart Nature Trail also celebrate novel experiences and deepen the link between residents, the environment and community. The resident-only garden offers 80 raised irrigated plots, an event lawn, covered picnic area, on-site composting, restrooms, parking and a small fruit tree canopy providing an intimate destination for small gatherings and events. Harvest Community Garden is expected to debut in the coming weeks, just in time for Florida’s fall-to-winter growing season. Stay tuned for a community garden informational inquiry form on wellenpark.com and social channels. “The garden is envisioned as a communal farm-totable experience, a connection to the land, and educational opportunities for residents and local schools,” said Severance. “We plan to introduce produce grown in the garden to our weekly farmers market, encouraging sustainable practices within the community.” The future Oakheart Nature Trail, bordering Wellen Park’s newest neighborhoods in the Playmore District, immerses outdoor enthusiasts in a natural tapestry of wetlands, preserves and a 50-acre lake. Spanning a return trip of roughly four miles, it ties into the community’s growing trail system that encourages walking and biking as alternate modes of transportation. Expect the trail to open in late 2024. In this season of giving thanks, we often find ourselves reflecting on the many blessings in our lives. The true spirit of Thanksgiving encourages the conscious expression of gratitude. Its focus is spending time with those that you love, and its energy encourages giving back in a meaningful way. It’s around those themes – thankfulness and giving – that we organized this issue of Venice City Lifestyle. Another wonder is to see that Venice Theatre’s “Curtain Is Up” for the 2023-24 season, despite the devastation caused by Hurricane Ian last year. We are especially grateful to the residents and businesses in the Venice area who help make our city the vibrant community that it is – and to our advertising partners who support Venice City Lifestyle and so many other wonderful organizations. Special performances, a blockbuster concert lineup with Saturday night shows for the first time, and even more spectacular surprises are in store for music lovers as the Venice Symphony pulls out all the stops for its 50th anniversary. The season, which runs from November 2023 to April 2024, will be the Symphony's "biggest and boldest" ever, promises Music Director/Conductor Troy Quinn. The “undeniable highlight,” he continues, “is when we welcome worldclass entertainer Michael Feinstein to our hall (in February 2024) to perform the greatest hits from Hollywood and the silver screen.” President and CEO Christine Kasten notes that the event marks the first time the Venice Symphony has "presented a guest artist of his caliber.”

The season's opening concert is "A Symphony Fantastic!," with guest artist Andrew Bain. As the principal horn player of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Bain is known for performances that range from film scores to vibrant orchestral solos. December will bring holiday cheer with the Symphony's popular annual concert featuring a mix of traditional favorites and new festive works. In January, "Tall Tales and Treasures" will captivate audiences with familiar music from blockbuster films such as "Pirates of the Caribbean" and "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Rings." Lauren Jelencovich, a gifted vocalist, will accompany these performances, ensuring a multi-sensory treat. World-renowned entertainer Michael Feinstein takes the stage February 9-10, 2024. Feinstein is “beloved by audiences around the world for his powerful and emotional vocals and piano playing, (and) we are honored to bring him to Venice to perform with the orchestra,” says Troy. Disney enthusiasts are in for a late February treat. "Disney's Maestro: A Tribute to Alan Menken" will be performed in collaboration with members of Sarasota’s Key Chorale, featuring music from "Beauty and the Beast," "The Little Mermaid," and "Aladdin.” In March, “Arabian Nights” showcases The Venice Symphony premiere of RimskyKorsakov’s masterpiece, "Scheherazade." The Venice Symphony’s 50th anniversary performance season culminates with “The Crown Jewel Finale." This ambitious event will feature an expanded orchestra and the full Key Chorale. International singing sensations Deanna Breiwick and Dashon Burton will join the ensemble, bringing Vaughan Williams’ magnificent "Dona nobis pacem" to life. Beyond concerts, the Symphony has plans to entertain and connect with the community that include having a float in Venice’s annual holiday parade and a “Symphony Scavenger Hunt” involving Venice businesses, says Christine. “In April (2024) we plan to present a free concert in a downtown Venice location featuring a chamber ensemble of our musicians,” she adds. Reflecting on the Symphony's journey since 1974, Christine expressed gratitude to everyone involved. "From our early days at Venice High School to the Venice Performing Arts Center, we have endeavored to inspire and entertain audiences of all ages," she explains. Nestled in the heart of untouched "Old Florida" landscape lies a hidden gem – Creator’s Farm and Garden. This enchanting oasis is the culmination of a dream owner Patti Toney had for many years that has turned out to be an extraordinary blend of agritourism and botanical wonder. “I have three, home-schooled kids (now 21, 19 and 17 years old) and we used to go to a lot of gardens and tourist attractions. I knew I wanted to create gardens where people could learn about spiritual truths in the physical world,” Patti explains. When the Toneys found the property, which is located off Jackson Road between Jacaranda Rd. exit 193 and River Rd. exit 191 of I-75, they knew they had discovered their piece of Paradise. At first, the idea was to build beautiful gardens, but after a visit to the ministry-based Echo Global Farms, Patti was inspired to “incorporate a variety of tropical edibles with the non-edibles.” To do so, she hired Echo’s previous

farm manager, Tim Watkins, owner of the edible landscape design company ecovisiondesign.com. Now, after five years of careful planning and dedication, Creator’s Farm & Garden is ready for visitors to wander among the 400 varieties of exotic, edible, and botanical plants, sprawled across over five acres of lush terrain. With a mission statement of “showcasing creativity in plants, Creator’s Farm and Garden hopes to inspire a deeper relationship with the Creator of the universe,” it’s only fitting that the gardens are designed to represent 12 biblical themes, from "Creation" to "Revelation.” However, there’s lots more to experience here, including a working, aquaponics system. At least once every week, a twin-engine turboprop aircraft leaves Venice Municipal Airport for the Caribbean island of Hispaniola laden with more than a ton of supplies for the mission field. Venicebased nonprofit Agape Flights has been delivering mail and cargo to missionaries in Haiti, the Dominican Republic, and the Bahamas for more than 40 years. This time of year, their freight begins to take on a slightly seasonal tone. “Missionaries have to plan farther ahead than most of us,” says Agape’s Director

of Cargo and Logistics Bruce Bosco. “I started seeing Christmas packages before Labor Day.” With nearly 300 missionaries depending on Agape’s weekly deliveries, the cargo shipments are usually an eclectic mix of Amazon.com boxes, food rations, water filters, solar power equipment, and whatever else it takes to live and serve in a developing nation. But on one special flight, just before Thanksgiving every year, the cargo's hold on Agape’s Embraer 110 ‘Bandit’ is

packed tight with comfort food – and lots of it! The nearly 75-year-old Venice Theatre deserves some major accolades. After 2022’s Hurricane Ian destroyed its primary performance space, the Jervey Theatre, and caused much more wreckage, the organization rallied, big time. The theatre will be producing a full season of performances at the temporary, 130-seat Raymond Center and its 90-seat black box Pinkerton Theatre. “The Raymond Center is hosting the mainstage family-friendly musicals and plays that would have been at the 432-seat Jervey Theatre,” says new Executive Director (ED) Kristopher Geddie. There will also be Venice Theatre concerts at three other local venues: Venice Community Center, Pine View School Auditorium, and The Venice Performing Arts Center. It's a great lineup of shows overall, says Kristopher. The 2023-24 Season’s performances include "Sounds of Soul: Motown and Beyond" at the Venice Community Center on November 27, 2023, and “A Christmas Carol” at the Raymond

That includes the need to upgrade building and electrical codes to modern standards, and the escalation of the cost and availability of building materials. “We can’t (just) replace what we had,” he says. In February 2023 I participated in my very first mission trip when I traveled to Guatemala with other volunteers to install fuel efficient stoves and water filters to families in the Guatemalan Highlands. The experience didn’t just change my view from beaches to mountains, it changed my perspective and my life. Invited by a friend who was going on her third trip, I signed up to volunteer, was accepted and bought my plane ticket. I was going through a HELPS Int’l. program that – together with agricultural, medical and

educational efforts – works to fight extreme poverty and build a foundation for lasting change in Guatemala. The mountains of Guatemala are beautiful, rich and green, and full of life. The people of Guatemala are also beautiful, full of life, and loving, despite the various levels of extreme poverty I saw during my three weeks among them. But it was the children who captured my heart! While shy at first, by the end of our time in the home, usually an hour or so, they were chatting away and playing CONTINUED >

with the small gifts we brought. Most popular were the friendship bracelets and finger puppets. Smiles and play transcend language, so although the people speak Ixil, a derivative of the Mayan languages spoken by their ancestors and native to the people in of the Quiche region, we still found ways to communicate. Each team was assigned a native speaker as translator to assist the teams. These people were invaluable, not only in explaining to recipients how to clean the water filters and maintain the stove, but in locating the homes as no addresses are associated with the families. We needed a village elder, usually a woman, to lead us from home to home after speaking with our translator. Some families save for years to put together the $40 US required to purchase the stove and filter, and it was easy to see how proud they were to do so. In teams of 3 or 4, traveling with a translator, our group of 17 volunteers, from Michigan, Massachusetts, Colorado, and Florida, installed 154 stoves and water filters in various mountain villages, changing forever the long-term health of those families. The work was exhausting, and the elevation was not kind to my lungs, but I went to bed each night

remembering the smiling faces and counting my blessings for all I have in my life. I will never again take for granted my indoor toilet, my access to healthcare, or my ability to buy the things my family needs. At least, I hope so and, for now, my view of what is truly important in life has changed. What’s important is how we live each day, and how we choose to see things. What I saw reflected in the faces of the people, especially the children, was joy. Joy at being alive, at having a roof, at having corn hanging up to dry, and at having a new wood stove and water filter. Falling For Neutrals SEASONAL DECOR TIPS FOR KEEPING IT SIMPLE I love decorating for the holiday season, but it gets tough if trying to keep a home decor airy, light and neutral. My home is full of neutrals, such as linen, khaki, white and gray, so decorating for the holidays can be tricky with the bright and bold themes on display at the stores. Here are tips regarding how to achieve a festive look without going overboard.

LESS IS MORE First, whenever decorating for the holiday season, I clear what's possible to make room for what's coming. I eliminate decor pieces that are displayed year-round to avoid adding clutter to rooms. Giving decor pieces or floral arrangements their own space to shine can pull the room together and make it feel very designed.

or evergreen branches with pine cones to fill vases. Add a battery-operated strand of lights and you’re looking just like a designer home magazine spread.

GO COZY Swapping out usual throw pillows and throw blankets for plushy, cuddly materials and seasonal prints are another simple way to add holiday spirit without being so literal. Opting for neutral plaids, cable knits, or sherpa materials add that feeling of fall and winter.

CATER TO ALL THE SENSES Don’t forget about the smell! Stocking up on candles that smell like the season is the last missing piece for a holiday vibe. The total sensory feeling of the holidays is what really brings a home to life, whether it's pumpkin spice burning for Thanksgiving or a fresh pine and cedar for Christmas.

STICK TO THE PALETTE As best as possible, I try to stick to each of the color palettes in my room. When it’s time to bring out pumpkins or holiday Santas, I stick to white and neutral or add in color pops of gold and silver to keep everything flowing. If I start to add too many primary colors, it ends up looking like a mash-up gone astray.

CELEBRATE MEMORIES The holidays are often bursting with family traditions and memories, and decor can reflect that, too. I have many items handed down over the years that I like admiring, but if they aren’t quite right for my room, there are options to bring the spirit of them to life. Framed holiday family photos in a black and white filter are an excellent way to tie in your history of celebrating in a subtle way.

LOOK TO NATURE Some of my favorite items to use for holiday decor come from a simple nature walk. Using actual items you find, or just getting inspiration from the outdoors is a great way to bring sights of the season indoors. For fall, elements such as branches, leaves and neutral gourds match with everything. For winter, I love using sticks with berries
