A TASTE OF WHAT’S TO COME: DOWNTOWN WELLEN PARK RESTAURANTS ANNOUNCED Sun-dried tomato pesto red snapper … wings slow roasted in a stone oven … grilled ribeye with smoked blue cheese … deepest darkest chocolate secret super premium ice cream. Restaurants coming to Downtown Wellen by the end of the year will offer a cornucopia of culinary options – from rustic Italian cuisine to tavern fare, steaks and seafood – as well as alfresco and rooftop dining and your soon-to-be-favorite place for happy hour, friends and family. The first round of dining establishments announced include Mirabella’s Italian Coastal Cuisine, Oak & Stone, Villani & Co. and Bright Ice – each committed to epicurean excellence and enhancing the ambience and social nature

of Wellen Park’s vibrant downtown. Currently under construction, the restaurants will open with the first phase of Downtown Wellen, anticipated for the fourth quarter of 2022. “These thoughtfully designed restaurants complement the vision, energy and excitement of Downtown Wellen,” said Rick Severance, president of Wellen Park. “They have the same creative spirit found in Wellen Park and are dedicated to establishing a true sense of community and togetherness.” Mirabella’s Italian Coastal Cuisine is the newest venture for Wellen Park residents Jeffrey and Kathleen Ziccardi who are also the proprietors of the popular Ristorante San Marco in

downtown Venice. Their new 166-seat restaurant will serve century-old Sicilian recipes discovered in a journal written by Kathleen’s grandmother, Mirabella. “We will offer a culinary journey through Italy focusing on the freshest foods and wines only we can source,” says Jeffrey Ziccardi. “Mirabella’s will feature coastal Italian dishes, pasta and seafood, fresh organic vegetables and lighter, healthier recipes that fit with Wellen Park’s healthful lifestyle.” Sarasota-based Oak & Stone’s two-story Downtown Wellen location will showcase views of the 80-acre Grand Lake and offer seating for 185 guests, including a rooftop patio for taking in an amazing sunset with your beverage of choice. Known for its tavern fare, 50-tap beer wall and lively social atmosphere, Oak & Stone’s menu features stone oven-roasted wings, artisan pizzas, burgers and healthy options like quinoa and veggie bowls. “We’re incredibly excited about this opportunity,” said cofounder Brett Decklever. “Oak & Stone complements Wellen Park well.” Villani & Co. is the newest concept for Venice-based OTW Restaurant Group, which also operates Irma’s Tacos and Barrel & Bean in Wellen Park. Villani specializes in steaks and seafood and offers a raw bar, an extensive menu of small plates, sharable cheese and charcuterie boards, and a large selection of bourbon, whiskey and scotch. “Villani & Co. is an incredible culinary mix and dining concept,” said Tommy Villani, managing partner of OTW. “It has an amazing raw bar and a contemporary American vibe.”

Founded in St. Pete two years ago, Bright Ice specializes in small-batch, super-premium ice creams made in house. Its playful twists on classic flavors include deepest darkest chocolate secret, chocolate cookie cake and cream, lemon with crystallized ginger and roasted strawberries with brown sugar and balsamic. “Wellen Park feels very symbiotic for us – it’s bright, modern, all natural and focused on people feeling good,” said co-owner Kurt Drake. “It has the same energy as our brand. Wellen Park is the perfect fit. It’s everything we want to be.” Additional Downtown Wellen restaurants are expected to be announced very soon, including the premier lakefront restaurant, which will also serve as the preferred caterer for the Solis Hall and Canopy Green event venues.

Tony D'Souza | tony.dsouza@citylifestyle.com

I started this publication three years ago because of my love for Venice and my desire to showcase the great things that the people of Venice do for one another everyday. I was reminded again of how kind our neighbors are when I attended the recent ribbon cutting for ten new homes purchased by local nonprofit Family Promise to provide housing for homeless families. Here at Venice City Lifestyle, we try to feature two local nonprofit stories every issue. In this issue, I am so pleased to tell the story of Family Promise and how our advertising partner, Mike Miller of Pro Group Realty, helped make this wonderful story possible. Read all about it on page 24. This issue's theme is 'Explore'. For a town so pretty that we attract tourists from all around the world, it's still important that we get out there and explore! Luckily for us, there are so many opportunities for adventure right here on our doorstep. In our main feature this issue, we cruise the 'Wild & Scenic' Myakka River with Logan River Tours. Our photographer, Stephanie Snow, took more than 300 photos on the locally-owned cruise. In our Local Experiences section, we offer ideas for five local daytrips, including to gorgeous Sanibel Island, to Boca Grande, to the lovely Riverwalks in Tampa and Bradenton, and to a true 'Old Florida' destination—Linger Lodge. We also feature the World Champion Atlanta Braves' Spring Training facility, Cool Today Park. Featuring shopping, dining, and entertainment, the park is open all year, offers excellent events and amenities, and has regular live music and trivia nights. The stadium and surrounding facilities cost $140 million to build, and has helped transform South Sarasota County into one of the fastest-growing regions of the country. In our City Scene section, take a look at pictures from the Braves' World Champions Welcome Weekend, which had the World Series Trophy on display right here in Venice! Our partner, Epiphany Cathedral Catholic School, holds its annual Gala the second Friday of this month, and Lisa and John Giglio will be honored with the Shining Stars Lifetime Achievement Award for service to the school. Read about the Giglios on page 34. Lastly, make sure to check out our feature on traveling to Nashville on page 36. Scan the QR code to win a free trip of your own!

The W ild & S cenic Myakka River LOCALLY OWNED AND OPERATED LOGAN RIVER TOURS CRUISE INTO THE WILDS OF OUR REGION'S MOST BEAUTIFUL RIVER

ARTICLE BY TONY D'SOUZA PHOTOGRAPHY BY STEPHANIE SNOW PHOTOGRAPHY Venice locals know that the Myakka River is an absolute gem. Lush, full of life, gorgeous, calm, and mystical, the river winds through our county on its slow course to the Gulf of Mexico. The further up the river you travel, the more intense the scenery becomes. It’s so beautiful that it is one of Florida’s officially designated ‘Wild and Scenic Rivers’. For those of us not keen on exploring alligator territory in a kayak, Logan River Tours is the perfect way to comfortably and safely visit this natural wonder. Plus, the tours depart from Snook Haven Restaurant, great for lunch or dinner with an ‘Old Florida’ vibe and menu, and plenty of live music. The 'Nan-Sea', a 40-foot custom-built pontoon boat.

Keith Logan narrates the tour with plenty of info on gators and the Myakka River's natural history.

Owned and operated by Keith and Diane Logan, the Logan River Tours are family friendly and include lively tales of Florida’s natural history. The boat is a 40-foot pontoon called the ‘Nan-Sea’, custom-built for nature photography, and with comfortable seats and an enclosed restroom. Each of the operation’s three captains—Cap’t Chuck, Captain Clint, and Captain Chuck—have decades of experience, as well as Master Captain licenses. “I had a ton of fun,” says Stephanie Snow, Venice City Lifestyle’s intrepid photographer, who took the tour for our team. “I saw so many gators and ended up taking 300 photos!” Keith Logan warns that alligators “keep their own schedule,” and seeing one is never a guarantee. That said, the likelihood of bumping into a few is fairly high on the trip, and there are plenty of birds, turtles, and fish to look for as well.

The tour lasts an hour, covers seven miles roundtrip, and the narration is tailored to adults and school age kids. From November through January, the tours leave at noon and 1:30 PM Wednesday through Friday, and noon, 1:30 PM, and 3:00 PM on Saturdays and Sundays. From February through May, the tours have a busier schedule, cruising at noon, 1:30 PM, and 3:00 PM Tuesday through Sunday. The boat doesn’t operate in the June through October rainy season, and inclement weather can cause cancellations at any time. Logan River Tours takes more than 8000 passengers on the river every season. Tickets are $19.65/adults, $12.20/kids under age 12, and reservations are strongly recommended. No Place Like Home Family Promise, The 2021 Venice Area Chamber Of Commerce 'Nonprofit Of The Year,' Has Purchased Ten New Homes From Developer Mike Miller ARTICLE BY TONY D'SOUZA | PHOTOGRAPHY BY VICTORIA DIETZ/ARTISTIC SOLUTIONS Family Promise has greatly expanded its ability to serve local homeless families with the purchase of ten new homes built by developer Mike Miller. Since 2015, Family Promise has helped hundreds of local families find temporary housing through partnerships with local churches, but it has not previously owned its own homes. “We did a feasibility study and planned for a capital campaign,” explains Executive Director Jennifer Fagenbaum. “We reached out to builders, and Mike Miller said, ‘I have ten new homes I’ll sell at a discount.’ Mike has been so wonderful. We raised half the $2.5 million cost in just three months, and a generous donor gave us a loan for the remainder. We have two years to pay back the loan and are still raising funds for it. This has been fabulous and our supporters really came together around the project.”

Homelessness continues to be a problem for working families as the real estate market has seen rents rise dramatically. The houses will serve as temporary housing for Family Promise families as they build savings or gain more education and skills. “Our original goal was to provide homes for working people who have difficulty finding affordable places to live,” says Mike, Manager of Pro Group Realty. “We couldn’t be happier to have Family Promise purchase these homes so they can help families for many years to come. They have been wonderful to work with, and we couldn’t have found a better use for this development.” 941.497.9881. Familypromisessc.org.

When Cool Today Park opened in March, 2019, at a project cost of $140 million, we here at Venice City Lifestyle were as excited as everyone else in our community. After all, the park has been a hugely consequential project, bringing jobs, economic development, positive attention, and new entertainment opportunities to our region. The Spring Training home of the World Champions Atlanta Braves Major League Baseball team, the state-of-the-art facility is much more than just a place to catch a spring training baseball game. In fact, the park is a year-round dining and shopping destination, offering off-season concerts, special events, and more. A quick look at our City Scene section on page 12 is a good glimpse at the kinds of events the Braves organization regularly hosts at Cool Today Park. Over two days in February, the park’s campus was the site of the World Champions Welcome Weekend, which celebrated the Braves’ World Series win. The packed event included free, family friendly activities during the day, and concerts both evenings. The World Series trophy was on display, the Budweiser Clydesdales and Dalmatian were on parade, Braves legends signed autographs, and Wellen Park hosted a Fun Zone with competitive speed pitching. The concerts featured the B Street Band— the #1 rated and longest running tribute to the Boss, Bruce Springsteen—and country superstar John Stone. “Braves’ events are first rate,” says fan Stewart Cummings of the World Champions Welcome Weekend. “They always pull out the stops. The park is beautiful and a great place to go with friends.” Even when the Braves aren’t in town, the park is a destination. The Superior Pools Tomahawk Tiki Bar & Grill is open from 11 AM to 8 PM every day, features tasty pub fare, a full bar, regular live entertainment and even a popular trivia night. The latest Braves merchandise is always available at the Clubhouse Team Store, open 11 AM to 6 PM six days a week. “First and foremost, we are a baseball manufacturing facility, we manufacture baseball players,” says Mike Dunn, Vice President of Florida Operations for the Atlanta Braves. “That’s a year-long process that goes from Major League Spring Training, to our minor league camp, to our summer camp, to our rehabilitation, to our strength and conditioning, to our way of life curriculum. The public doesn’t necessarily see that. They may see glimpses of it when the players are working out on the field. Aside from the baseball side of things, the park is open all year with our Tomahawk Tiki Bar & Grill. We have special events, extended happy hours, there is always something going on. We employ over 100 people year round from housekeeping, to security, to hospitality. We pride ourselves on being part of the community, and keeping our doors open to the public.” CONTINUED >

The main field at the park has the same dimensions as Truist Park, the Braves’ MLB stadium in Atlanta. The back quad minor league fields are also open to the public.

Parking is plentiful, and visitors can arrive by golf cart, or over even by bicycle—there are bike racks at the park. During the summer, minor league games are free to attend, and though the schedule of the games is often released close to game time, typically the first pitch is thrown at 1 PM. The park also offers behind-the-scenes guided tours of the field, dugout, press box, luxury suites, and clubhouse. Tours are conducted on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month after Spring Training (adults $35, seniors $25, age 15 and under $15, under age 4 free). Group tours must be reserved in advance. “Give us a visit,” says Mike. “This is a special setting and the amenities are very nice.”

Cool Today Park opened in March, 2019. The gorgeous facility cost $140 million to build and has brought many economic benefits to our region.

The Clubhouse Team Store, offering a wide range of Braves branded gear, open 11 AM to 6 PM Monday through Saturday.

Founded in 1959, Epiphany Cathedral Catholic School's mission is founded on the school’s Three Crowns: Academic, Character, and Spirituality.

THE COUPLE WILL RECEIVE LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS FROM EPIPHANY CATHEDRAL CATHOLIC SCHOOL AT ITS ANNUAL GALA THIS MONTH

LISA AND JOHN GIGLIO ARE SHINING STARS Epiphany Cathedral Catholic School holds its annual major fundraiser, the Epiphany Gala: Tropical Oasis, at the Plantation Golf & Country Club, on Friday, April 8th. The event features dinner, and live and silent auctions. The Shining Star Lifetime Achievement Award will also be presented, with this year’s recipients being Lisa and John Giglio. The award recognizes those who have built an enduring legacy at the parish and school through a lifetime of service and dedication to Catholic education. The Giglios are well known as the former owners of Freedom Boat Club and Freedom RV Club, which they sold in 2019. The couple has been involved with Epiphany since their daughter, Brianne, now 18 and a first-yearstudent at Auburn University, was three years old. Their younger daughter, Kaitlyn, 16, also graduated from Epiphany before matriculating at Cardinal Mooney High School. John served as President of the school’s board and was active in the Men’s Group, while Lisa was the Room Mother Coordinator and served on the Gala Committee. “One of the reasons the Giglios have meant so much to Epiphany is they helped build our sense of community,” says Leah Mihm, Director of Development. “They’re very involved and they bring people together.”

“I’m really honored by this award,” says Lisa, herself a former Catholic school teacher. “Every teacher my kids had at Epiphany was awesome. I really felt when I’d drop off my kids at school that they were safe, loved, and learning what they needed to learn. They were well-prepared going into high school, and Brianne is well-prepared going into college as well.” “We feel that there are much more deserving candidates than us,” John says. “We are truly humbled by this.” The school’s enrollment period is open, and Leah invites parents to call and schedule a tour. Among the school’s many special programs, it now offers the Young Marines, a national nonprofit education and service program for boys and girls aged eight through high school graduation. The program focuses on teaching the values of leadership, teamwork and self-discipline. Epiphany also implements a STREAM integrated approach to learning, bringing Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics together as they do in the real world.
