Hurricane Ian stormed through our lives on September 28, just three days after this issue of Venice City Lifestyle’s deadline. Today, as Venice and its neighboring communities continue to recover from Ian’s impact, it seems especially poignant that November’s theme is Thankful. VCL’s new managing editor, Emily Leinfuss, and I are counting our blessings, loving on our families and friends, and doing our best to give back to others in a meaningful way. As Paddy Padmanabhan, the president of the Literacy Volunteers of South Sarasota County says, in this issue’s article on the impactful nonprofit, “If I can make even a small difference in the life of others, it is a life well lived.” VCL’s story on Agape Flights’ Thanksgiving Dinner Project is a shining example of thankfulness in action. Each year, the nonprofit flies a full Thanksgiving meal over to its affiliated missionaries in Haiti, the Bahamas, and the Dominican Republic to give them a taste of home." I know that, between the busyness of everyday life and the hubbub of the coming holiday season, it’s easy to forget about living life and appreciating the beauty that surrounds us here in our Floridian Paradise. That’s why we are reminding readers about “5 Awesome Arts & Culture Nonprofits,” whose work enhances our community via art, music, and the environment. The road is about to get easier for Wellen Park (wellenpark.com) and area residents who want to go the extra mile to source locally grown, organic produce. Starting in December the newest member delivery location for just-harvested farm boxes from Worden Farm will be the Wellen Park Welcome Center. “We are excited to support local family farms while providing our residents with convenient access to the nutritional benefits of fresh organic produce grown close to home,” says Christine Masney, vice president of marketing at Wellen Park. “They are great for people who care where their food comes from and want affordability and convenience.” Worden Farm (wordenfarm.com) is now in its 20th season, providing local organic produce, flowers, and herbs to the Suncoast area from its 85-acre farm in Punta Gorda. Its ‘Harvest Share’ boxes, which are available only to members who pay in advance, contain a half-bushel of 100 percent USDA-certified organic produce. Selections vary weekly depending on the harvest and season. The boxes fit easily on a refrigerator shelf and typically include leafy salad and cooking greens, root crops, fruiting vegetables and culinary herbs. For example, a box may contain a head of lettuce – the farm grows 20 different varieties – as well as quarts of tomatoes and squash, bunches of carrots, kale, scallions, green beans, and basil. Worden Farm harvests crops Monday afternoons and Tuesdays and packs them without fillers like ice packs or packing peanuts on Wednesdays for delivery. “Everything in the box is humming with vibrancy,” says Eva Worden, who founded Worden Farm in 2003 with her husband, Chris Worden. By contrast, it can take up to two weeks before produce appears on supermarket shelves, she adds. Recognized as organic farmer experts by the Organic Trade Association and the USDA, both Chris and Eva hold doctorate degrees and are Florida Innovative Farmer Award recipients. Wellen Park’s Welcome Center will be Worden Farm’s only delivery location between Port Charlotte and Venice. Memberships are $38 per week, with the full 20-week program payment due upon sign-up. Pickup will be available to members every Wednesday, 2:30-5:30 pm, from Dec. 7, 2022, to April 19, 2023, at the Wellen Park Welcome Center.

Each year, Agape Flights, a Christian aviation ministry, touches the lives of more than 1.5 million men, women, and children by flying in life-saving supplies to the Bahamas, the Dominican Republic, and Haiti. But that’s just the beginning. Once transported, Agapes' more than 300 affiliated missionaries ‘on the ground’ take the reins. Their ongoing work includes providing clean water, community health, education, evangelism, medical services, vocational training and more. Each year, in November, the company shows its gratitude to these dedicated people through its Missionary Thanksgiving Dinner Project (sponsored by Regulator Marine, Edenton, NC).
WHAT IS THE MISSIONARY THANKSGIVING DINNER PROJECT? It is Agapes' way of blessing its missionary families for all the work they do by flying in a full Thanksgiving meal, with turkey, cranberry sauce, ingredients for a pumpkin pie, and all the trimmings – at absolutely no cost to them. While each year the Thanksgiving Project totals nearly $35,000, the impact is priceless!
WHY IS THE PROJECT SO SPECIAL? Missionaries associated with Agape Flights choose to leave the comforts of home to help alleviate the problems of the poor and offer them opportunities for a better life. That doesn’t change the fact that these families spend Thanksgiving – and every other day and holiday – in far-flung places. “After many, many years, our Missionary Thanksgiving Dinner Project continues to be near and dear to our hearts,” says Agape CEO Allen Speer. “We love to bless our missionary families who are away from the comforts of home,” he adds.

One on one literacy tutoring takes student goals into account.
Over the 40 years that the Literacy Volunteers of South Sarasota County (LVSSC) has provided our area with English literacy tutoring and education, the nonprofit has helped thousands of men and women gain the skills they need to reach their full potential as individuals, parents, workers, and citizens. Moreover, its mission, “to change the lives of adults…by providing tutoring, educational technology, and classes that effectively increase their English reading, writing, and speaking skills at no cost to the adult learners,” doesn’t just help those people. Literacy fosters equality and prosperity within our community and for our nation, according to the organization's president Paddy Padmanabhan. “About 44 million adults in the U.S. cannot read or write above the third-grade level. If their literacy was raised to a sixth-grade reading level, it would add $2.2 trillion in annual income to the U.S. economy,” says Paddy. The factors contributing to that number include the cost of healthcare ($106-$238 billion), unemployment (loss of earning ability and taxable income) and more, according to statistics compiled by ProLiteracy America, of which LVSSC is an organizational member. Locally, LVSSC has tutored 247 area adults from 42 different countries over the past year. The larger percentages of students hail from Ukraine, Russia, Venezuela, Columbia, and Cuba. But not everyone who gains literacy through the organization is from another country, says treasurer Sandy McIntyre. Sandy explains that a U.S.-born student, who dropped out of school in the 11th grade, always wanted to learn to read, but couldn’t - due to undiagnosed dyslexia. With specialized instruction his reading has greatly improved. Now he’s able to help his young son who is having difficulty reading at school.
That example illustrates how the LVSSC endeavors to individualize each learning situation to the needs of the participants. “There is no cookie-cutter education here,” says Paddy. LVSSC has two offices for initial intake. One is in the North Port Public Library and the other is in the William H. Jervey, Jr. Venice Public Library. However, all South Sarasota County libraries provide rooms for LVSSC tutoring. As the program coordinator for Venice, one of Peter Norrman’s tasks is to “assess the skills and goals of people seeking help to make the right match between student and tutor,” he says. Working for a specific goal is a great motivator. For example, a nursing student who wanted to better understand English so she could pass her licensing exam, was paired with a retired nurse. Another successful match was when an oncology nurse from China was paired with a radiology tech, who happened to be a neighbor of Sandy’s. In this case, student and tutor "knew all the same professional terminology. Plus, they really meshed and (my neighbor) helped her through other tests, and her first jobs," says Sandy. Along the way they each made a friend.". LVSSC doesn’t only offer one-on-one tutoring and, more recently, tutoring through Zoom. It also provides citizenship classes for immigrants to study U.S. history and government in preparation for becoming U.S. citizens. Group classes include English instruction for students at any level, and conversational English for intermediate and advanced students. Computer-based instruction is also available, where adult students can improve their English skills at their own pace. Students aside, one of the biggest challenges the organization faces is not having enough tutors, says LVSSC secretary Nancy Pike. “We have 260 active students and 143 CONTINUED >

active tutors, with nearly 70 students on a waiting list,” she said. “When the ‘snowbirds’ return we will have around 180 tutors,” she added. But that’s not nearly enough. “Since the war broke out in Ukraine, and North Port has a very large Ukrainian population, we are helping many new refugees. We need many more volunteers to work with these students who are trying to learn English so they can exist in our community,” says Nancy. That’s why LVSSC provides free training and many other resources to its tutors. In addition to the initial classes required to prepare volunteers to tutor English as a Second Language (ESL) and Basic Reading (BR or Basic Adult Literacy), it offers Start Now! – a mentoring program that
provides support to new tutors as they begin working with an adult learner. Plus, both Venice and North Port have an extensive library of materials for tutors to use, including materials helpful in teaching speakers of English to read, and for teaching those with learning disabilities. There are many reasons to become a tutor and help change lives through literacy. Some of them were stated by LVSSC staff members when asked what motivates them to keep on mission. “Literacy improves understanding between people” is one reason. “Literacy helps the whole family,” is another. And, for LVSSC president, Paddy Padmanabhan, the motivation is clear: "If I can make even a small difference in the life of others, it is a life well lived".

In an amazing example of the past meeting the future, Historic Spanish Point is currently hosting an expansive, outdoor exhibition of artworks created with augmented reality technology. “Seeing the Invisible: An Augmented Reality Contemporary Art Exhibit” features 12+ international artists’ creations. The exhibition, which runs through September 2023, is the first of its kind to be developed as a collaboration among botanical gardens around the world. As visitors’ heads move in the virtual, their feet will be walking on top of the past - Spanish Point’s 30-acre campus on Little Sarasota Bay in Osprey contains an archeological record that dates back to 300 A.D.
