Welcome to October’s Venice City Lifestyle. If you are like me, the cooler weather of Florida’s fall season brings forth a greater appetite for getting out and sampling more of the wonderful dining options here in the Venice area. What better timing then, for our Food & Drink issue to arrive? In the following pages we’ve showcased a yummy variety of the creative cuisine, seasonal specials, and familiar favorites being cooked up at Venice’s local cafes and eateries. You’ll also read the latest foodie news – straight from Venice’s superstar restauranteurs themselves. Michael Bacon of Brewburgers, Brew-ZaBagels, and American Comfort restaurants, talks to us about how he got the culinary inspiration for his newest place, Shuck N’ Ale, from locations all along the Gulf of Mexico. Legacy is on Justin Pachota’s mind. The president of the Venice Pier Group emphatically informs Venice City Lifestyle there’s at least a year to enjoy the original, “Smack Dab on the Water” Snook Haven. If you’ve never visited this historic, authentic BBQ restaurant yet, the time is now. As publisher of Venice City Lifestyle, I’m always out and about, connecting with all the wonderful people and businesses in our community. One morning I was in Wellen Park after “Schmooza Palooza” (a networking group) and I started craving my favorite drink: chai latte with oat milk. I stopped into Louie’s Bistro to drop off issues of last month’s magazine and ended up getting a chai and The Kelsey breakfast sandwich with an everything bagel and a side of fruit. Wow. Everything was delicious! You can read about Louie’s, and four more local eateries, in “Food Glorious Food”. Also, in this issue we cover Sarasota Ballet’s 2022-23 season, news from the Child Protection Center, an invitation to a celebration at Lakeside Lutheran Church, and yes, one more Foodie story about the delicious, nutritious, and nurturing fare at Cocoa Yoga Café. THE YARD ADDS LOCAL FLAVOR TO DOWNTOWN WELLEN’S OUTDOOR AMBIANCE

Retrofitted shipping containers sporting bold, bright designs set the stage for an equally colorful and playful environment at The Yard, the newest addition to Downtown Wellen’s many outdoor experiences. Tucked along the signature 80-acre Grand Lake, the outdoor food park and entertainment hub symbolizes the joyful feeling of the coming downtown, bringing good times, cool vibes and community connections. A place to grab a bite and explore, relax or just enjoy being outdoors. As a one-stop venue for food and fun, The Yard will offer a diverse eatery lineup, an open-air dining courtyard and a recreational area for all ages. Casual options in The Yard include grilled hot dogs served Chicago-style or smothered in cheese, gourmet pretzels and butter-soaked popcorn at the Atlanta Braves-affiliated Pop Dawgs. Agapi will offer eat-on-thego Greek kabobs, hummus, salads, spanakopita, stuffed grape leaves, tzatziki and baklava. Claw & Co.’s menu highlights New England favorites like warm and cold lobster rolls, fried clams and clam bellies, clam chowder, lobster bisque, onion rings and French fries. “So many meaningful connections happen while sharing a meal and enjoying outdoor activities,” said Rick Severance, president of Wellen Park. “Downtown Wellen was designed with the intention of creating special places for people to gather, socialize and make memories. The Yard reflects the vibrant, playful spirit of Downtown Wellen.” Woven into a tapestry of green spaces, parks and promenades, The Yard is part of Downtown Wellen’s sweeping outdoor space that meanders along the lakefront. A mustvisit regional destination, the pedestrian-friendly downtown

offers unique alfresco experiences to play, gather, graze, engage and linger longer after shopping, dining, exploring the lake on a kayak and soaking in the unfolding scenery of the 2.8-mile

waterfront trail. Patrons can dine in The Yard’s courtyard, enjoy an impromptu picnic under the canopy of a nearly 100-year-old live oak tree in the neighboring Heritage Tree Living Room, and during family fun time at a playground immersed in nature and a lakefront splashpad and fountain area. “Downtown Wellen offers wonderful outdoor spaces,” said Severance. “Our team put a lot of thought into emphasizing a connection to nature and the outdoor environment. Fresh healthful ingredients, diverse cuisine, and gastronomic delight. Those are the three main characteristics that Whitney Zora Stetler feels food should offer, and so that’s what you will find at her Cocoa Yoga Café. “I learned about the health and wellness aspects of food from a young age,” says Whitney. “My family was health conscious. We cooked meals from scratch, and my mom made us fresh juices to drink before school with ingredients like apple, carrots, and celery.” That was before juicing was ever popular or well known, she adds. “If any of us were unwell, she would put garlic in and say, ‘you will drink this!’” Whitney’s penchant for global cuisine started with the Hispano Spanish and Mexican fare of Southwest New Mexico, where she grew up, and its flavors are alive and well at Cocoa Yoga Cafe.

She was back in her hometown and craving an old, favorite dish: a butterfly burrito. "Then I realized that the only place I could get one now would be in my own kitchen.” Thus, Cocoa Yoga Café’s breakfast burrito, which features fresh pico de gallo and pepper jack cheese, was born. After she attended culinary school in New York and Italy Whitney's tastes turned truly international. So, when developing Cocoa Yoga Café’s menu, she set out to create dishes that reflected the global flavors that she loves the most. “I took aspects of different cuisines that I appreciated and found a way to make each one shine in an individual dish,” explains Whitney. The result is a trifecta of salad choices from around the world, including a Greek salad with feta, walnuts and a creamy raspberry vinaigrette; an Italian caprese salad with fresh Buffalo mozzarella; and the Thai and stop me salad, which comes with a yummy peanut dressing. “When I came back from Italy and started working in restaurants in the U.S.,

I became very disenchanted with how many pre-prepared ingredients they used," she explains. Instead of making sauces from scratch, “they would just open up a three-gallon tub of sauce.” Cocoa Yoga Café is the complete opposite. The salad dressings, pico de gallo, and much more is made fresh in house. “I want to be enchanted by my food, and I want to feed people the same, healthful way I would feed my family,” says Whitney. Helping people get and stay healthy was also the impetus behind deciding to offer a line of supplements designed to help the body function properly. “Whether it is caused by stress, or our lifestyles, sometimes we literally aren’t able to get the nutrients we need,” she explains. “These products were developed by friends within my inner circle. When the modern world meets “Old World Florida” it’s often in the form of construction. Such is the case on some roads that lead to the iconic waterfront eatery Snook Haven. Today, however, nothing has changed at the restaurant haven named Snook. “You have a year or more to experience dining ‘Smack Dab on the Myakka River,’ at the original Snook Haven.” That’s the skinny from Justin Pachota, president of The Venice Pier Group, the parent company of Sharky’s on the Pier, Fins at Sharky’s and Snook Haven. “I want to let people know that despite construction on River Road, the drive to Snook Haven is completely doable,” he adds. Once you turn onto the unpaved East Venice Road, it’s an easy ride down a mile-long stretch of Spanish oak and Florida palm canopy that’s as “wild and scenic” as it ever was. “It feels like you’re entering a portal that transports you” to a time when Florida was all unspoiled landscape and native wildlife, he adds. Snook Haven’s menu has also remained stalwart. “We are an authentic Old Florida smokehouse," says Justin. Options include award-winning, fresh-smoked chicken wings, barbeque pulled pork, brisket, turkey breast and ribs, plus salads, sandwiches, tacos, gator bites, and fried fish and shrimp. “We also have more than 20 craft beers that represent some of the best from around the country and Florida,” he says. That includes Venice’s 3 Bridges, Sarasota’s JDubs, and Tampa’s Cigar City. In addition, “Banjo Thursdays,” which is when members of the Gulf Coast Banjo Society show up to jam on the grounds, will continue to happen weekly – from now through May. Depending on who shows up, musicians may include saxophonists, violinists, harmonica and horn players, and singers. Justin reminds us that there’s a whole lot of history built into Snook Haven. Local lore has it that the site was used by smugglers during Prohibition. In the 1930s it became a location for Hollywood filmmakers and, in 1988, the area opened to the public as a fishing camp with a restaurant. Much of that will be lost when the Snook Haven building, which harkens back to 1958 and its origin as the fishing camp’s cook shack, is demolished as part of Sarasota County’s plans to revamp the entire area. "Eventually the county plans to rebuild food and beverage concessions that will be pulled back slightly from the river and elevated to allow for a clear view and for safety when river levels rise,” explains Justin. However, “the county won’t begin construction until late 2023 at the earliest. That means people have 12 to 14 months minimum to experience the ‘original’ Snook Haven." Local history and family are the things that Justin learned to value most growing up. After all, it was Mike Pachota, Justin’s dad, who launched the landmark Venice restaurant Sharky’s on the Pier more than 35 years ago, and where Justin cut his teeth in the restaurant business. Then, when The Venice Pier Group took over Snook Haven ten years ago his wife Cheri, who is the restaurant’s managing partner, was the first to lead its operations. The U.S. portion of the Gulf of Mexico coastline spans more than 1,680 miles, and the entirety of its shoreline triples that number. For Michael Bacon, that expanse is a culinary dream like no other. “I’ve had this idea in my head of a coastal seafood concept,” says Michael, who is the owner of BrewBurgers, Brew-Za-Bagels and American Comfort. “If you were to trace your finger along a map of the Gulf of Mexico, you’d find that many different cuisines live along its shores. Why not offer them all in one place,” he further explains. The concept was just there, in his head, until a confluence of forces combined to create the right opportunity. First, he knew it would be unique to the area. “There are a lot of seafood options around, but they all do the same kind of thing. This was a different approach,” he says. Then, after Michael noticed that a great location had become available across the street from another new project he was developing, the wheels kept going round, until one morning he woke up, turned to his wife and said, ‘honey, what do you think about this…’” Michael admits that when Shuck N’ Ale: A Seafood Joint first opened in January of 2022 the public got the (mistaken) impression that it offered primarily New Orleans fare. But that’s not the case. Of course, Louisiana is represented by a selection of classic New Orleans dishes such as jambalaya, gumbo, and blackened catfish. However, it's the South Carolina coast that's the origin point for Shuck N’ Ale’s low Shuck N’ Ale’s low country boils – although, with names like “The Circus Bridge” and “The South Jetty,” he’s turned them into local favorites. The restauranteur has always envisioned Shuck N’ Ale as a “come-as-you-are, family restaurant,” he says. However, when you’ve launched as many places as he has, you learn that incremental changes are sometimes needed. So, when feedback from diners indicated that the price-point was “a little high” he revamped the menu to include “a few more approachable items Today, casual diners can enjoy fish tacos with flavors inspired by the Yucatan, red beans and rice with a Cuban flair, and a southern fried-chicken sandwich, y’all. Florida is represented by swamp bites (hand battered and deep-fried gator tail), and conch chowder.

“We have live entertainment outdoors every weekend,” he adds. Regular acts feature the steel drum band Trinidudes, with reggae, calypso, and Island tunes. There’s also Joe Lawhorne, who plays a variety of upbeat tunes from the 50’s up to today, Steve Haines with his genre-hopping acoustic covers, and Bradley Hoskins offers a modern approach to island and rock favorites. Adding to the fun is that, by now, the restaurant will most likely be done fitting out another outdoor area dedicated as “a big cookout/party zone.
