FOR THE SECOND YEAR IN A ROW, PORT CHARLOTTE FLORIST GAVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY BY DONATING FLORAL ARRANGEMENTS TO LOCAL HOSPICES, NURSING HOMES AND ASSISTED LIVING FACILITIES. The surprise floral deliveries were greatly appreciated by the facilities’ residents, the flowers brightening their days. “The idea for the ‘Give Back’ event was that we wanted to share our love of flowers with those most in need of receiving them,” says owner Donna Cardenas. “Few gestures bring as much joy as a surprise delivery of flowers.” Donna’s father Robert Gill founded what was then known as the Punta Gorda Flower Shop in 1979, eventually expanding the business into Port Charlotte Florist. Located on the Tamiami Trail, the business has a 7,000 square foot shop, where popular floral arrangement classes are held. Donna, along with her brother Dennis Gill, purchased the business from their parents in 2005 and they have run it together since then. “We have always been a local business,” Donna explains. “The ‘Give Back’ event is one of the ways we let the community know how much we appreciate their support.” 941.627.2236. 900 Tamiami Trail, Port Charlotte. Students from the shop’s design classes donate their time and talent to put the arrangements together. “The combination of Port Charlotte Florist and our amazing students enables us to provide over 100 arrangements to the recipients,” says owner Donna Cardenas. “Our students absolutely love participating in this event. Each person donates two hours of their time, designs two arrangements, and the following day we deliver all the arrangements to the selected recipients. I’m not sure who gets the most out of it, us, our design students, or the recipients. It is truly an awesome event for everyone involved. OPPORTUNITIES FOR OUTDOOR FUN. Try some of these family activities, and fill yours and your kids’ senses with delight. Ice cream treats. We live in Florida, so while kids up north are putting on their fall jackets, the weather’s always warm enough here to justify some cold treats! Host a campfire cookout. Have the kids round up neighborhood friends for a cookout. Hot dogs, hot chocolate, marshmallows, and s’mores are a traditional way to top off the season. Have everyone take turns telling stories around the fire. If you have little ones, check-out library books with autumn themes to read to the youngsters. Attend a football game. Gather your blankets and head to the stadium. High school, college, and pro football games are great fun for kids and parents alike. Take along a bag of popcorn and get ready to cheer on your team. Make a scarecrow. What’s fall without a scarecrow on your porch? It is easy to make. Just buy a couple of bails of straw, then have each family member gather some old clothes and hats. Stuff it using string to tie off the hands, feet, and head. Walk in the woods. It’s the perfect time of year for a walk in the woods. Look for animals scurrying about and don’t forget your binoculars. From Sleeping Turtles Preserve to Myakka State Park, trails abound in Venice. Visit a pumpkin patch. Begin a family tradition of picking your pumpkins from a patch. After cleaning out the pumpkins, make roasted pumpkin seeds, a yummy treat that kids love. Rinse the seeds, pat them dry, and coat with melted butter. Spread the seeds on a cookie sheet, sprinkle with salt, and bake at 350 until golden brown. 24

Bird migration watch. As fall fills the air, many birds begin to arrive in Venice from the north. Plant perennials and bulbs. Let your kids try out their green thumbs. After all, fall is the time of year to plant perennials and flower bulbs. Let your kids choose some plants from the gardening store, and allow them to help design the garden. A hand-painted rock or two adds color until the spring blossoms bloom. Hold a pumpkin sale. If you have little entrepreneurs, have them set up a pumpkin stand in your front yard. Find an orchard where pumpkins are cheap, then have your kids purchase a small stock to sell for a higher price. Hot cocoa, baked pumpkin seeds, or doughnuts are profitable additions. Horseback rides. Head to the stables and enjoy the fall colors on horseback. For horse rental listings visit http://www.horserentals.com/index.html. Make a bird feeder or house. Kids will enjoy the carpentry experience and marvel at watching birds make use of the kids’ creations. Kits are available in hobby stores and online for making bird feeders. To make one from scratch, visit your library and check out a book on how to build a birdhouse, or find free instructions on the Internet. Parades and marching bands. Find out when your local college or high school will hold its homecoming parade. Be sure to bring snacks, and enjoy the colorful floats, majorettes, cheerleaders, and marching band. FOR THIS ‘STYLE’ ISSUE, OUR FRIEND MICHAEL BISHOP, OWNER OF BISHOP CONSTRUCTION SERVICES SENT US THESE BEFORE AND AFTER PHOTOS OF A RECENT PROJECT IN WHICH HE WAS ASKED TO BUILD A MODERN ADDITION TO AN OLDER HOME WHILE MATCHING THE ORIGINAL STYLE. Michael’s family has been building in our area for more than 70 years and his company is known for its standards and excellence. “On this project, we did an interior remodel and then built the addition,” Michael explains. “It took three months and added 780 square feet to the home. The client wanted to enclose the back patio. The house is U-shaped, dated to the late 1950’s, and we matched that style to the best of our abilities while making the addition’s exterior walls 12 feet tall as opposed to the original eight feet. The client loves the higher ceiling, the exterior look, and the final product overall. This is what we specialize in.” Our region is in the midst of a building and home improvement boom and Michael urges potential clients to plan ahead. “We are absolutely swamped right now,” he says. “I’m asking people to bear with us, but people are looking at a six month wait time from the first call. PHOTOGRAPHER STEPHANIE SNOW, MAKEUP ARTIST ASHLEY ROBINSON, AND MODEL BAILEY SCOTT TEAM UP FOR A FASHION FORWARD PHOTOSHOOT LAST YEAR, VENICE LIFESTYLE’S PRINCIPLE CONTRIBUTING PHOTOGRAPHER, STEPHANIE SNOW, MET MAKEUP ARTIST ASHLEY ROBINSON WHEN BOTH WERE WORKING A WEDDING. Their work synched together perfectly and their lovely styled and photographed bride, Abby Reagan, made Venice Lifestyle’s September 2020 cover. Since then, Stephanie and Ashley have been looking for creative ways to collaborate and highlight the variety and versatility of their work. Into this mix comes Bailey Scott, 19, a Venice High School graduate with aspirations in musical theater and modeling. 32

“With this shoot, Stephanie and I wanted to step outside the box of what we normally do and show our range,” explains Ashley, owner of the Give Me Glam makeup studio in Port Charlotte. “We started with Bailey barefaced, that ‘Cover Girl’ eyes look, then I added lashes, defined her brows. Next, I went to makeup, a bold, winged-out eye shadow, added scarves, red on her lips, gave her a Christmas look, a Fourth of July look. It was great to try so many different things.” For Stephanie, the shoot was an opportunity to experiment with lighting, composition, handling a range of colors, and editing. “I’ve been wanting to do a photo shoot to play and experiment and just create new and different looks,” Stephanie says. “I had the idea of using the sunglasses, which came from Island Optical. The red/white/blue top is actually a scarf that I thought we’d use in her hair that we turned into a top. Then we had fun with adding more dramatic makeup and using red as our feature color. I’m always looking to learn and improve my techniques.” For Bailey, the shoot was an opportunity to further her modeling aspirations.

ARTIST’S PALETTE (CONTINUED) “I felt confident in this shoot, really comfortable,” Bailey says. “I like being creative in front of the camera, but I also listen to the photographer and respect her vision. I love being on the stage and modeling. I know they’re difficult careers to break through in, but they’re so much fun and they are my passions.” Bailey has appeared in Venice Theatre productions of Dreamgirls, A Christmas Carol, and Peter Pan. She’s considering UCF’s theater department because of the university’s proximity to opportunities at Disney. Ashley and Stephanie are available for weddings, events, proms, family experiences, or just when someone wants to dress up and have fun.
