It's Time To Celebrate, Venice! HERE AT VENICE LIFESTYLE, WE ARE ENERGIZED WITH A RENEWED SENSE OF OPTIMISM, OPPORTUNITY, AND DARE WE SAY IT—CELEBRATION! It’s true that the past years were difficult. But we have always had faith that better days were ahead. In this issue, we hope to share with you positive local stories that have us believing in a bright future. Growth and progress are springing up all around us, Venice! First, we were fortunate to be invited to the wonderful Downtown Wellen groundbreaking event hosted by Wellen Park. Wellen Park is completely transforming South Sarasota County, modernizing our region and making us one of the fastest growing places in the nation. Downtown Wellen will be a hub of dining, shopping, and enter-

tainment. In these pages, we tell the story of that exceptional event, share pictures of the creatively decorated ceremonial shovels, reveal the stunning, new Tropia at Wellen Park, and most importantly, have an interview with Wellen Park President, Rick Severance. His profound experiences in Florida development gives us many insights into where our region is headed. Just a hint—great things are happening! Next, we visit the newly opened Sarasota Memorial Hospital-Venice. This five story, state-of-the-art medical marvel will host over 600 physicians. This project, almost three years in the making, is responsible for hundreds of local jobs. We then take a tour of the gorgeous, boutique community, The Gallery at North Port, which brings new lifestyle choices to South County. We also visit Town Square, which is recreating the 1950’s through a Disney World atmosphere tailored to our beloved seniors. On the arts side of things, we meet ‘lugufelo’, who makes beautiful, thoughtful sculp-

Make Room For Life

Joe Makes Room for a New Chapter Riding his motorcycle, everyone knew Joe better as “Big Dog.” But obesity comes with a heavy cost, and at age 56, Big Dog was running out of road, a borderline diabetic with high blood pressure and heart disease. Then his doctor told him about the Sarasota Memorial Bariatric and Metabolic Health Center. Today, Big Dog is back at the front of the pack, with a healthy heart and the horizon’s promise ahead.

VENICE RESIDENT PUBLISHES FIRST CHILDREN’S BOOK AHEAD OF 70TH BIRTHDAY Venice resident Jim Grant has published a children’s book, “My Big Toe.” The book is fun for parents to read along with their children. The colorfully illustrated pages are reminiscent of Grant’s daughters’ discovery of their toes as toddlers. Grant had the idea of creating a children’s book as daughters Lauren and Brianne grew up. But it was the birth of his grandson Jameson that served as the motivation to bring his dream to life. Available for purchase through Dorrance Bookstore, Amazon, and Barnes & Noble.

VENICE YACHT CLUB AT 70 Past

Celebrating 70 years in 2021, the Club is inextricably tied to and invested in the history and success of Venice. The founders were sailors, weary of the long drive to Sarasota to get to their boats They wanted to establish a maritime tradition here for enduring friendships of common interests with fun on the water and on land. Founded in 1951 as semi-private, its business and social affairs were conducted in space rented at the Tarpon Center Resort, owned by George Gibbs, Jr. The Jetty Villas condominiums occupy that site today. Two years later in 1953, converting to a private Club, it built an addition at the resort’s main building at its expense for its larger functions as they also continued to enjoy the resort’s public dining room. By year end 1951, there were 118 members. As membership continued to increase, more space was required. In 1957 an extensive search began for land with immediate access to water. By 1961, land had been acquired on Roberts Bay, and the new clubhouse was commissioned. In 1960 while constructing its new clubhouse, the Club was one of the 13 founding members of the Florida Council of Yacht Clubs, now 36 yacht clubs. The Council monitors and promotes pending legislation for boating and water safety. Reciprocal privileges at all 36 clubs are enjoyed by individual members of the clubs when visiting other places in Florida.

Present

Through its 70 years significant enhancements have been made to the property and clubhouse. From a single, small dining room, there are multiple dining venues today from formal to casual inside the clubhouse and outside under cover at the significantly expanded Tiki and all along the expanded pool deck. Menus are refreshed often, and varied specials are offered daily. Steak nights, taco nights, seafood nights along with beverage specials add to members’ pleasure enjoying dining in a venue of their choice. A robust social and event calendar begun in 1961 has expanded through the years. Multiple “clubs within the Club” exist for special interests: Golf, fishing, books, bridge, Mah Jong, the Joy sailing club, a wine club, along with others, and weekly Bingo. With its waterfront presence of 61 slips along 5 docks, a fueling station and dockmaster’s office, the club’s location is perfect with immediate access to the Gulf. There are kayaks for daily rental by members, and adult sailing is also available. The Club sponsors the U S Sailing-designated Community Sailing Center, Venice Youth Boating Association, Inc., that is always open to the public and was begun in 1952 as the “Pram Fleet.” Here young sailors become “captains of their ships” long before they can drive a car. Investing in greater Venice for 70 years has been a priority. Our members helped

initiate the original volunteer corps at Venice Hospital with funding and volunteers. Sundowner Cruises for many years for the public, conducted by our boaters, were for the benefit of Venice’ chapter of the American Cancer Society. Founded in 2011, the Venice Yacht Club’s Charitable Foundation in only its first ten years has provided nearly $1 million in grants to charitable organizations in greater Venice.

Future

With a long-range strategic plan in 3-year segments in place, launched this year, a membership of 700, a staff devoted to members’ satisfaction and enjoyment, and with continued diligence in financial oversight, the Club looks forward to the next 70 years with great excitement and confidence. A resurgence in sailing is underway along with several other important initiatives. A gala originally planned for February, when the Club received a Proclamation from the Mayor of Venice, was canceled due to the pandemic. Now planned in November, it will be the grand occasion to “Honor our Past, Enjoy our Present, and Celebrate the Future.”

The beauty of Wellen Park is the culmination of what Rick and his team have learned through the years. “Every single project has been different,” Rick explains. “And I have learned from each of them what to do, and especially, what not to do. But the hallmarks of Seaside in terms of creating a great place, a hub of activity and vibrancy, and an area where people can make memories are the same. We brought these commitments to Wellen Park and to all of the residents of this region who will benefit from Downtown Wellen.”

DOWNTOWN WELLEN BREAKS GROUND! (CONTINUED)

President Rick Severance brought ideas he had learned at Seaside--TIME Magazine's Development of the Decade--to Wellen Park.

As part of the groundbreaking, Wellen Park announced a new series of curated events to start this fall that will preview what’s to come with Downtown Wellen. Featuring a range of makers, craft artisans, fitness and wellness experts, and culinary talent, the ‘Countdown to Downtown’ event series will take place in and around the Wellen Park Welcome Center, which offers a front-row view of the construction progress in Downtown Wellen, expected to open in the fourth quarter of 2022. “It will be the heart and soul of Wellen Park,” says Severance. “There are just a lot of really thoughtful elements that will be interesting, fun and definitely worthy of posting on social media.” In addition to shops and restaurants, Downtown Wellen will include a permanent food truck park, a Great Lawn for community celebrations or just enjoying the sunshine, and a Town Hall that will host concerts and events. Nature-inspired features like a hammock grove and a lounge area underneath a nearly 100-year-old heritage oak tree will connect visitors with the outdoors and offer spots for rest and relaxation. A unique natural playground, designed to look like part of the surrounding landscape, will provide an imaginative spot for young residents and visitors to play. A 2.8-mile trail will traverse the centerpiece lake and create opportunities for biking, walking and running. The future lakefront will also feature kayak and paddleboard rentals from a floating dock. Wellen Park has three districts: West Villages, Downtown Wellen, and Playmore. The full build out will eventually have 60,000 residents and 22,000 homes. “The growth has been phenomenal over the last two years,” Rick says. “We now have everything from luxury apartments, rental cottages and senior living, to new home builders and age-restricted condominiums. When I think of what we have accomplished here, I don’t ever look at it as something personal. It will be our collective legacy. I simply couldn’t do it without the outstanding team of people around me.” For more information about living at Wellen Park, call 941.229.7124, go to Wellenpark.com, or visit the Welcome Center at 12275 Mercado Drive in Venice. The Welcome Center is open Monday-Saturday, 10 AM-5:30 PM and Sunday, 12 PM-5 PM.

SMH Comes To Venice PHOTOGRAPHY SARASOTA MEMORIAL HEALTH CARE SYSTEM

SARASOTA MEMORIAL HOSPITAL–VENICE IS CELEBRATING ITS GRAND OPENING! Located at Laurel and Pinebrook roads, the 365,000 sq. ft., five-story hospital has 110 private patient suites, a 28 bed emergency center, and six surgical suites. It is slated to open this month with more than 700 staff members and 600 physicians representing more than 40 specialties. The new campus is designed to be flexible and expandable. It is hurricane hardened with a seamless connection to SMH’s electronic medical records and information technology, has negative-pressure isolation rooms across the hospital, and a negative-pressure ventilation system to convert a portion or all of the ICU/critical care unit to a pandemic unit if needed. “We are excited to bring Sarasota Memorial’s high-quality care to the rapidly growing south Sarasota County community,” says SMH Vice President Sharon Roush. “Opening the new hospital in Venice will enhance care to the entire region, while also creating and sustaining jobs and livelihoods for hundreds of people and area businesses.” SMH-Venice offers a full array of medical and surgical care, including: Cardiology Unit/ Catheterization Lab; Critical Care/Intensive Care Unit; Emergency Care; Endoscopy & other procedural areas; Gastroenterology; General/Vascular Surgery; Labor & Delivery/ Post-Partum Unit; Laboratory/Diagnostic Testing; Nephrology; Neurology/Neurosurgery; Oncology; Orthopedics; Pulmonology; Imaging/Radiology; Urology and more. The hospital’s growth will likely continue. In August, the Sarasota County Public Hospital Board approved $113.6 million to construct a third bed tower, which will add 68 more private patient suites. The campus has the ability to more than double, to more than 300 private patient suites, 16 surgical suites and a 50-bed ER. 2600 Laurel Road E., North Venice. 941.261.9000. Smh.com/smh-venice. 34

LIFE AT THE GALLERY AT NORTH PORT SENIOR LIVING IS ELEGANT, ACTIVE, TASTEFUL, AND FUN. A rental-only, upscale community of apartments and villas with garages for independent living, assisted living apartments, and a memory care facility called The Cottage, The Gallery at North Port brings Sarasota-style amenities and an active senior lifestyle to the North Port region. “This is a boutique community,” says Community Relations Director Alice Yerkes. “We are called ‘The Gallery’ because we’ve appointed the property with five beautiful sculptures by local artist Mark Aeling. We also display the work of other featured local artists throughout the property. We are located on Main Street, right across from the George Mullen Activity Center. Our residents get to benefit from everything downtown North Port has to offer, including concerts in the park.” 38
