END OF THIS MONTH WE CELEBRATE THANKSGIVING! It’s with the theme of thankfulness that we put this issue of Venice Lifestyle together. Featured in this issue is a real tale of thankfulness, our friend and neighbor Rae McQuade’s story of overcoming Covid-19, what her experience was like, and what her plans are going forward. Next, we visit with the truly caring doctors at Davis & Beyer, Venice’s longstanding dental, facial and spa experts. In this feature, you’ll meet Dr. Davis, Dr. Beyer and Dr. Lewicki, learn about their specialties and technologies, and why they treat each one of their patients like family. The same can be said for the fine people at Jacaranda Trace, who tell us this month everything they are doing to keep their residents and staff healthy and safe. And last but not least, you will meet Jake and Patti Edwards and their Get It Gone moving service. Experts in their field, the Get It Gone team is always there for you, treating your possessions with the love that you do. How in the World Do You Stop a Stroke?
Comprehensively. It’s extremely complicated to stop a stroke’s rapid killing course once it’s started. It takes stroke neurology experts in collaboration with stroke-specific emergency specialists to diagnose and treat each patient’s complex symptoms immediately and with the most advanced care. That’s the difference between our Comprehensive Stroke Center and the next best option. Sarasota Memorial is this region’s only state-certified Comprehensive Stroke Center, providing patients with the highest level of stroke specialty care – multidisciplinary care that can make all the difference in the world for patients who want more than survival. They want meaningful recovery.

ARTICLE TONY D'SOUZA | PHOTOGRAPHY STEPHANIE SNOW PHOTOGRAPHY
JAKE EDMUNDS, FOUNDER AND OWNER OF GET IT GONE MOVING AND REMOVAL SERVICES, STARTED HIS BUSINESS IN 2004 IN NEW HAMPSHIRE WITH A PICKUP TRUCK, A BORROWED TRAILER, AND $50 TO REGISTER THE BUSINESS NAME. Through hard work, determination, and a tireless devotion to customer service, Jake has developed a loyal following. Get It Gone’s focus is to instill trust in their customers, and the team is friendly, caring and pays close attention to detail. Jake and his team treat their clients like family. As Jake says, “We don’t just want a customer, we want a customer for life. We really want our clients to know that we are here for them. From pricing, to every detail of the job, we are honest and straightforward. We never surprise you with added expenses. For us, this business is about building lasting relationships.” Along with his wife and business partner, Patti, the company’s Director of Operations, Jake opened a second location in Venice five years ago. Not only was the business opportunity appealing but the lifestyle and great weather made this an easy decision for these entrepreneurs. With no job too small, Get It Gone removes old furniture, does complete household moves with a special focus on Senior Relocation and Moving services, assists realtors in staging properties, and offers concierge-style attention and care to its clients and their belongings. Even if you just need furniture moved around within your home, Get It Gone is your solution. RAE MCQUADE LEARNED THE HARD WAY TO TAKE THE ILLNESS SERIOUSLY ARTICLE TONY D'SOUZA PHOTOGRAPHY STEPHANIE SNOW PHOTOGRAPHY
RAE MCQUADE WAS SIMPLY GOING ABOUT HER LIFE WHEN THE CORONA VIRUS BEGAN TO SPREAD LOCALLY BACK IN THE LATE WINTER AND EARLY SPRING. A youthful 59, Rae relocated to Venice from her native New England four years ago, to be close to her aging father. Working at Venice Regional Bayfront Hospital the past three years as an orthopedic technician, Rae pushed through long, 12-hour shifts. In her off hours, she loved to play hard, to connect with her friends, and blow off steam. Rae’s job involved caring for actual Corona virus patients. “We have a dedicated Covid unit,” Rae says. “The hospital did everything it could to protect all of us working on the front lines, it provided us with the necesssary PPE. I was floated from my unit to the Covid unit a couple of times because of staffing issues.

“ T h i s i s r e a l . I ’ ve ex p e r i e n c e d i t b o t h p e r s o n a l l y a n d p r o fe s s i o n a l l y.” One night in March, I was in the ICU where there were a half dozen really, really sick patients. They were on ventilators, so very ill, unable to do anything, it was sad and scary. Most had underlying conditions, such as diabetes, heart issues, compromised immune systems. I felt safe because of the fact that I don’t have any underlying conditions.” Six weeks after the state lockdown was lifted at the end of April, Rae found herself on a Friday night sitting with a group of friends at a local pool party, not socially distanced and everyone mask-less. With the mixed messaging on masks and the virus nationally, she thought her good health would protect her. It didn’t. “I was sitting there with my friends when I felt myself getting sick,” Rae explains of her mid-June experience. “A wave of fatigue washed over me and I must have turned pale because my friend said, ‘Whoa! Are you ok?’ I really didn’t feel good at all and decided to leave. I could barely make it from my car to my couch. Within an hour, I had body aches from head to toe, a headache, sore throat, even my teeth hurt and I had the hacking Covid cough. That cough was the nastiest thing I have ever heard. The fatigue was so intense I had to crawl on my hands and knees just to make it to the bathroom.” Rae considered calling an ambulance, but she knew hospital beds were in demand, and in her illness-addled thinking, she didn’t want to leave behind the cat she was pet sitting. She spent the weekend sicker than she had ever been in her life, and was tested for Covid at an urgent care that Monday morning. The test came back positive. On leave from the hospital ever since, Rae now has a message for anyone willing to listen. “This is real. I’ve experienced it both personally and professionally,” Rae explains. “I was really sick for a week. I still have fatigue months later. My short-term memory has been affected. I have what people who have contracted the virus call ‘Covid brain.’ It affects your ability to think clearly long after you start to feel better.” No one else at the pool party contracted Covid and Rae has no idea where she contracted the virus. But the lessons of Covid stay with her. “I thought because I was healthy, I wasn’t at risk,” Rae says. “Now I stay home as much as possible, avoid places that don’t socially distance, and I wear a mask. It was reckless for me not to take this more seriously. I hope others will read my story and make whatever changes they need to in order to protect themselves.” Rae McQuade is a cat sitter and a wedding officiant. She can be reached at 941.218.9196, Rae.mcquade@yahoo.com.

and skin care, and the friendliness and attention that has made the practice an award-winning leader in our region. At Davis & Beyer, patients’ health and needs always come first. It’s a team effort at this elite practice, one that results in gorgeous skin and beautiful smiles.
Dr. Brent Beyer DDS Dr. Beyer joined the practice in 1995, when it was Higel & Davis. The history of the practice is of interest to Dr. Beyer, as it shows how long excellent dentistry has been practiced by Davis & Beyer. “We were founded in the 1950s by Dr. Duke of the Duke family who owned Duke’s Garden Center,” Dr. Beyer explains. “In the 1960s as Dr. Duke’s practice grew, Dr. Duke’s nephew, Dr. Higel, joined the practice. Dr. Higel’s family helped establish Venice and has been in the region since the 1800s. In 1988, Dr. Higel brought in Dr. Davis, and then I joined, and the rest is history. Our practice has always had a clear philosophy. Simply put, we do our very best for each and every individual who comes to us for care. We treat our older patients as we would treat our parents; like family. That’s our philosophy. Based on our patient loyalty, it absolutely works. Our patients often tell their friends about their good experience, and word of mouth has always been great to us.” Father of four adult sons and married to Rhonda, Dr. Beyer enjoys travel and sports—he played football during his undergraduate years at Lafayette College in Pennsylvania, and one of his sons played minor league baseball for the Detroit Tigers. “My goal is to make my patients feel good about their teeth,” says Dr. Beyer, a cosmetic and implant dentist.

Dr. Charles Davis DDS As with all of the dentists and staff at Davis & Beyer, Dr. Davis stays ahead of the technological curve to keep the practice at the very cutting edge of new treatments and procedures. To that end, he is always looking to invest in the equipment needed to provide the best dental care available in our region. “We have a motto at Davis & Beyer,” Dr. Davis explains. “It’s ‘Excellence By Choice.’ We practice excellence because we choose to. We each work hard everyday to stay abreast of breakthroughs in our fields, master the new technologies, and use them to improve our patients’ teeth and skin. We take good care of our staff as well. It’s why we have

patients who have been coming to us for over 30 years, and why so many of our staff stay with us for decades. We care about each other as much as we do our patients. When you come to Davis & Beyer for treatment, you really will experience a total team effort.” Dr. Davis has three daughters—one in dental school—and he enjoys outdoor adventures like boating and scuba diving with his ‘better half’, Janel. He provides IV sedation for patient comfort and enjoys using the latest dental technology to provide the very best outcomes for the patients in his care. Among the technologies employed at Davis & Beyer are 3-D scanners, 3-D printers, an on-site mill for making crowns, intra-oral cameras, and much more. “Our equipment is top-of-the-line,” Dr. Davis explains. “We use the X-Nav. It integrates a 3-D CAT scan of a patient’s teeth so that we are able to make our treatments absolutely precise, to within a fraction of a millimeter. The X-Nav is like a GPS system for my surgical drill. It places everything I do with extreme precision. I followed the technology in development for years and bought it as soon as the FDA approved it. That’s what we do here at Davis & Beyer. We strive to offer our patients the very best in every way.”

2010. Originating in Sarasota, the festival moved to Venice in 2014 and now performs in both Venice and Sarasota.
The artists travel here from all over the world and create 12’ x 12’ or larger 2D chalk paintings over the course of three days, Friday through Sunday. Viewing the finished work is best on Sunday and Monday, but to watch the process and meet the artists it is best to attend Friday or Saturday. The artists who create 3D pavement paintings invite festival spectators to step directly onto their artwork. These 3D works are generally completed by opening day. By stepping onto the painting, spectators become a part of the illusion when photographed. The artists come up with intricate ideas that make images, and the ground, appears to dip or rise when viewed from particular vantage points. The festival also invites anyone of any skill level to sign up as an artist and work alongside the professionals. No other cultural organization offers an opportunity the public to work alongside renowned artists better than this festival, giving novice pavement and student artists a truly unique experience. The Pavement Music Festival portion of the festival features musicians throughout the event and has a dance floor. All kinds of beverage and food trucks are also on hand. There is an interactive family art areas to inspire the ‘Young

The festival is managed entirely by volunteers—even the director, Denise Kowal, is a volunteer—this non-profit organization strives to bring a global community of culture enthusiasts together who value the work involved to make and share memorable experiences. Winning Sarasota Magazine’s Readers Choice Award for Best Event in Sarasota County from 2012-2017 and SRQ Magazine’s Readers Choice Award for Best of SRQ Local 2012-2015, as well as setting world records, it is no surprise that during any given year, the festival attracted over 200,000 visitors during its time in Sarasota and upward of 50,000 visitors to Venice, with an estimated economic impact in the millions. The Festival is always looking for new artists, volunteers, and sponsors to participate in this exceptional community event.
Artistic expression is something that can be found in every culture from every point in history. Expression through creation is a fundamental part of the human existence, and is a powerful force for binding people together. The 16th century Italian street artists known as the ‘Madonnari’ were vagabonds who traveled from festival to festival, often acting as the visual counterparts of minstrels. They made their living from coins tossed into a collection plate beside their artwork, a tradition that is continued at the chalk festival by placing containers beside the artists’ work. However, the difference here is that the money goes towards the festival’s survival, and the artist who collects the most coins receives our People’s Choice Cash Award. Traditionally, chalk drawings have a religious theme. In fact, that is where the Madonnari get their name; the word is derived from Madonna. The traditional Madonnari traveled from town to town creating small-scale chalk drawing with limited materials. They used chalk, brick, charcoal, and colored stones as their medium, and earned a meager living. World War II and the desolation it brought with it saw a great reduction in the number of Madonnari, and a greatly diminished number continued chalking until the 1980s. 32
