Urban Nashville Lifestyle | September 2018
DOWNTOWN NASHVILLE OFFERS LOTS OF DINING DECISIONS, THOUGH NOT ALL OF THEM ARE WISE ONES. Two smart choices for the conscious customer with a discerning palate and an inquisitive mind are Fin and Pearl and the Library Bar. Both establishments plate outstanding fare in a stimulating setting with lots to talk about. Fin and Pearl is all about serving the highest quality, sustainably sourced seafood available. You will not find overfished Chilean sea bass here. You will find, however, chef de cuisine Shawney Severns constantly creating unique dishes from the fresh fish that comes in three times a week. One recent week’s creation featured handmade ravioli filled with goat cheese and corn and topped with beech mushrooms, brown-buttered toasted pine nuts and a bit of concentrated lobster butter. The meal was crowned with grilled fish, starting with swordfish but switching over to striped marlin. It is all about what is fresh and sustainable. “We know the captains’ names of the boats and every detail about how the fish is caught,” says General Manager Philip Leaberry. “We’re not just getting a box of frozen fish somewhere. We’re actually getting a biography.”

The setting for the seafood story that Fin and Pearl regales its patrons with every day is an inviting one, with repurposed teak for the tables and bars and glasses from recycled wine bottles. Even the oyster shells get a second life; properly crushed, they make for bags of soil amendments on the Harpeth River. “Our mission is to create a sustainable, earth-friendly seafood restaurant in both our practices and buying strategies,” says Tom Morales, Fin and Pearl’s owner. “We hope to inspire others to embrace these simple tenets through our culinary efforts and a kind, hospitable attitude.” The Library Bar inside the Sheraton Grand Nashville offers some delicious food for thought as well with its “Famous Authors Menu.” Beginning this summer, chefs Kimo Akana and Albert Mallard created seven three-course dinners inspired by seven great writers. Each week, a different author is integrated alongside the regular menu. The Mark Twain, for example, features a farmer's salad of seasonal vegetables wrapped in carrot, radish and zucchini ribbons and served with fresh florals followed by cornmeal-dusted catfish, seasonal greens, blackberry gastrique and seasonal, floral garnishes. Save some room: the bourbon pecan praline bread pudding is for dessert! Thoughtful cocktail pairings accompany each meal. The Mark Twain is paired with The Langhorne, an organic whiskey served neat or on the rocks. As Twain himself might say were he in the Library Bar, the demise of fine dining in a scintillating setting has been greatly exaggerated.

NASHVILLE CELEBRATES VETERANS OF SPECIAL FORCES ARTICLE WILLIAM HARDWOOD
This is particularly true for special operation forces. But how do these highly trained soldiers transition to civilian life once their service is over? Enter Your Grateful Nation, a nonprofit that addresses the unique challenges faced by special forces veterans. It is the brainchild of executive director Col. Rob Kirila, a 26-year veteran of the U.S. Army. We asked Col. Kirila to share some thoughts on his organization and one of its recent events in town. It was held on July 19 at the Loveless Cafe and featured Rob O’Neill, the special forces soldier who eliminated Osama bin Laden. WHAT DOES YOUR ORGANIZATION DO? With an ever-growing list of hiring partners, we work with each individual to curate a professional network. We believe that when business leadership

has the opportunity to interact with special operators, a veteran of special forces, good things happen. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE NASHVILLE FOR ONE OF YOUR EVENTS? First, Nashville is very attractive to special operators in terms of geographic location, business climate, social climate and the proximity of Fort Campbell. Second, Nashville is known to be a highly patriotic, veteran-friendly town. Our special operators can thrive in environments like Nashville. HOW DID THE EVENT GO? Many of the folks expressed their appreciation. We raised in excess of $45,000, a great success that allows us to provide support services to special operators throughout the summer. We return next year and are always looking for volunteers and donors. HOW CAN OUR READERS HELP? Visit YourGratefulNation.org to sign up to help our incredible special operators.

Urban Nashville Lifestyle | September 2018
THEIR “ACCIDENTAL COMPANY.” It’s what Melissa and Rick Hinnant call Grace & Lace— their successful fashion company that bloomed from great tragedy and a pair of boot socks. Rick owned a landscaping company, and Melissa was in real estate. They decided it was time to slow down and start a family, but surprisingly to them, this took more time than they expected. After years of trying, Melissa finally had a healthy pregnancy, and the two were on their way to fulfilling a lifelong dream.
“IT WASN’T SOMETHING EITHER OF US SET OUT TO DO, BUT LOOKING BACK, IT’S LIKE EVERYTHING FELL INTO PLACE DESPITE THINGS FEELING LIKE THEY WERE—AT TIMES—FALLING APART.”
“One day, I was inspired to make a pair of boot socks for myself that had lace on the top of them peeking out of my boots,” Melissa says. “They took me eight hours to make and were a pain in the butt—I swore I’d never make another pair again. However, every time I wore them, women—total strangers—would stop me to ask where I bought these socks.” Rick encouraged Melissa to sell them online, where people fell in love with both the socks and the story behind them. That’s how the “accidental business” started. “It wasn’t something either of us set out to do, but looking back, it’s + Honeycomb Knit Sweater + Lightweight Two Fit Knit + Chiffon Hi/Low Extender

In 2013, Rick and Melissa appeared on ABC’s hit show “Shark Tank” and developed an incredible partnership with self-made real estate millionaire and “Shark Tank” investor Barbara Corcoran. People were continuing to fall in love with the brand and its story. Grace & Lace went

R IT WAS A SPRING FASHION SHOW FOR THE FALL SEASON, BUT A MERE CATWALK WOULD NOT SUFFICE. Instead, a stage was needed, and a titanic one, too. Because upon it—and before a packed crowd

downtown last April—stood a group of larger-than-life hometown heroes: Jurrell Casey and Taylor Lewan, Kevin Byard and Delanie Walker, Brian Orakpo and Marcus Mariota. Each man his own person, each man blessed with his own particular skills and abilities, but each man also fused into a single, cohesive unit through the power of teamwork and the magic of style. It was the unveiling of the Titans’ new uniforms, a preview of the team’s seriously sharp new look. The crowd went wild. Let’s take it from the top, starting with the helmet. Gone are the two blue stripes, replaced by a single slash of two-toned silver. It’s a sword, a symbol that runs throughout the new uniform. The inspiration? Think Titans of Greek mythology, the primordial gods who battled the Olympians in what were arguably the first Super Bowls, a series of epic struggles called the Titanomachy. Also, think Parthenon and Nashville as the “Athens of the South.” It quickly becomes clear that the ancient Greek theme to our city predates even Music Row and hot chicken. Hence the sword element, appearing as well on the shoulders of the jerseys along with “sheaths” on the sides of the pants.
