ith the celebration of local men in June and all of our adventures and fun in July, this summer has already been quite an eventful one. We had so much fun, it’s hard to believe it’s almost time to end. But, as the song goes, school’s out for summer (we’ll just go ahead and skip that next line declaring school out forever). And, as summer begins to come to a close (at least in the summer break sense—if you prefer to go by the astronomical seasons you still have almost two more months, yay!), it’s time to start thinking about getting back to those backpacks, lunches and busy days.

2017 NATIONAL SENIOR GAMES CELEBRATES 30TH YEAR The 2017 National Senior Games competition celebrated its 30th year. Seniors ages 50 and up from all over the world came together this June to compete in the games. The competition consisted of 19 different events that took place at 20 separate venues

CRUISIN' FOR THE TROOPS RAISES MONEY FOR SEMPER FI FUND On May 27, the Confederation of Leathernecks Motorcycle Club held a car and bike show to raise money for the Semper Fi Fund. The Marine-only motorcycle club raised $1,200 for the cause. The Semper

Fi Fund is a nonprofit organization

that

was established in 2004 to assist injured or critically ill service members. Since its establishment, the organization has helped over 18,500 members and their families. For more information, visit SemperFiFund.org.

MAPLEWOOD LANE HOSTS MEMORIAL DAY COOKOUT The Maplewood Lane Assisted Living hosted a cookout for its residents and their families. The home changed owners in December 2016 and the new owner, Eddie Cummings, wants to do everything he can to make the residents feel like they are at home. The Memorial Day celebration was held on May 25 and honored all who served this country. Aside from the all-America menu of hot dogs, hamburgers, baked beans, salads, mac 'n cheese and patriotic décor, there was a cake decorated with the American flag for everyone to indulge in.

ALABASTER HOLDS 15TH ANNUAL CITY FEST Alabaster’s annual City Fest held on June 3 was a huge success with dry weather and a massive turnout. Many were concerned about the forecast, but the rain held off for thousands to appreciate the annual event. The day got underway with a cruise-in car show. The rest of the day was filled with live music, food, craft vendors, kid-friendly activities, a DJ and a performance by The Flying K-9s.

They instill the assurance and confidence that is needed to achieve dreams. This is no easy task. It takes a special kind of person to commit their lives to education and to giving children the knowledge they need to succeed in society. Teaching is a noble profession, and our teachers deserve and have earned nothing but extreme respect. Their work is meaningful and important and a functioning society cannot exist without them. I know I would not be where I am today without the leadership, inspiration, hard work and most of all patience that I received from my teachers. Two Eighty Lifestyle (TEL): What are some of the reasons you became involved in education? AW: A person never really knows if they’ve chosen the right career when they begin, but I am lucky. I was 20 years old when I began teaching, and I can honestly say that I have loved teaching ever since. There are many reasons why I have become involved in teaching. One constant is the love of children. They make me laugh! There is absolutely never a dull moment, which brings me to the second reason: the thrill of the challenge. There is nothing like the first day when your students tell you they do not like to write. Then, by the end of the year, students have written beautiful essays that they can call their own. It’s crazy fun helping them become confident authors. TEL: In what ways have you dedicated your life to education? AW: I have dedicated my life to education because I like making a difference in the lives of my students. You hear this all of the time, but I think it is true with any teacher, especially the teachers at Greystone Elementary. When you see a student get it, or when you see them make a change for the better, it’s addictive. TEL: What makes you special to the community and what makes the community special to you? AW: Not only am I passionate about writing, but I am passionate about taking care of our community. I have received grants from our PTA, the Hoover City Schools Foundation and the Birmingham Audubon Society. These grants have provided birdseed, feeders and native plants for our Outdoor Classroom. With their help, students have been given the opportunity to take a more active role in caring for the world around them. In our Outdoor Classroom, native birds, animals and plants are studied at every grade level. The community has helped me by providing me with tools I can use to make a difference. I am fortunate that I teach with passionate, loving teachers and work in a school district that supports innovative ways to educate its students. 18

I have helped students who came to us at 11 and 12 years old who never have been in school, don't even know the alphabet, and, moreover, they needed to learn social behavior, but with love and care they were able to graduate from high school successfully and go to college. We had students who came to us at 13 and 14 who didn't speak a word of English, but again, with love and care, they became fluent in English and very successful in school. Do not let raise! 4. Roll out a rectangle the size of a big cookie sheet. Spread with soft butter. 5. Mix remaining sugar and cinnamon together. Sprinkle and spread over butter. Sprinkle with raisins or nuts, if desired. 6. Roll tightly lengthwise, so you have one long roll. Mark 12 2-inch rolls. Cut with floss or thread. 7. Place on a coated cookie sheet. Let rise 10 minutes while the oven is preheating to 400 degrees. 8. Bake 15-20 minutes. Cool and frost. Makes 12 large cinnamon rolls.
