Fall into October

ah, can't you just feel it the air, the nice crisp feeling of fall being ushered in? Or in my case, growing up in middle Tennessee around Nashville, we could smell it in the air. In those days tobacco farmers would cure tobacco crops in the barns by a process known as "firing." In today's world, if you Google firing tobacco, it gives you this definition: "Fire curing produces a tobacco low in sugar and high in nicotine. Pipe tobacco, chewing tobacco and snuff are fired cure." Either way, if you feel it, or if you have been lucky enough to smell it, I'm sure we are all excited to finally have fall upon us. October is one of the most beautiful times of the year in the Two Eighty area. Mornings are crisp but not cold. Afternoons are pleasantly warm but not obnoxiously hot. October always brings a blaze of color: crimson reds, buttery yellows and pastel pink ribbons. October is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and as a family that has been impacted by this terrible disease, it's a cause we feel particularly compelled to support. There are numerous ways to support Breast Cancer Awareness Month around the Two Eighty area. The important thing is to join the fight! This month in Two Eighty Lifestyle we take a look at what it takes to be the best football fan. We also offer suggestions on the ultimate tailgate, and we introduce you to a business that is making sure the athletes in this area are "Better, Faster and Stronger." Until next time, I hope to see you out in the Two Eighty area celebrating and enjoying the change of seasons. NATIONAL NIGHT OUT BRINGS TOGETHER LAW ENFORCEMENT, COMMUNITY National Night Out 2017 was tons of fun for all ages. The Helena Walmart Neighborhood Market parking lot was filled with fire trucks, police cruisers, ATVs and police Hummers on August 1. This night was designed as a community-building campaign to enhance the relationships between law enforcement partners and their neighbors in the community. This year’s affair had a great turn out. Police officers and firefighters gave out safety tips, free pizza and hot dogs, and there were some great photo ops with the officers, firefighters and their vehicles. Firefighters also demonstrated the proper way to put out a kitchen fire, which is the No. 1 cause of house fires in the United States.

EIGHT TEAMS COMPETE FOR BEST BARBEQUE BUTT IN HELENA On Saturday, July 15, the air was filled with tasty aromas as competitors prepared their best butts. There were eight different teams this year competing for the first-place trophy and the title Best Barbecue Butt in Helena. The event is an annual fundraiser to help support the Miracle League of Helena. This year, $1,892.50 was raised to help the organization. The Que Brothers won the people choice award, and Driveway Boyz BBQ won the judges' award.

WALK RAISES AWARENESS FOR ADDICTION Veterans Park hosted the first Heroin Overdose Prescription Elimination Walk on August 12. The walk was established to create CONTINUED >

awareness about addictions and drug and alcohol abuse. Around 120 supporters showed up to back this amazing cause. After a silent walk through Veterans Park, a candlelight vigil was held to remember all the families who have suffered and addicts who have died from their addictions. Co-sponsors Shelby County Drug-Free Coalition and Bradford Health Services invited several guests to share stories about how these additions have affected the area over the years.

12 ounces cream cheese, softened 1 cup shredded cheddar 1 teaspoon garlic powder 1 teaspoon smoked paprika Kosher salt Ground black pepper 1/3 cup chopped bacon pieces 1/3 cup finely chopped fresh chives 1/3 cup finely chopped pecans Pretzels or crackers for serving INSTRUCTIONS

1. Mix together cream cheese, cheddar, garlic powder and paprika. Season with salt and pepper. Form into 18 small balls—a mini scoop works great—and refrigerate until firm, 1 hour. 2. In a shallow bowl, stir together bacon, chives and pecans. ARTICLE JULIE MEYER

Each of these recipes makes 18 bites. My boys loved the chicken bites and had a hard time limiting themselves to three each. For a crowd, you may need to double or triple the batch. We do like it hot, so you may need to adjust the hot sauce if you prefer a tamer bite.

BUFFALO CHICKEN BITES INGREDIENTS

2 cups shredded chicken—rotisserie chicken works well 3 tablespoons hot sauce—I used Tapatio brand 1 1/2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese 2 tablespoons chopped chives 2 tablespoons ranch dressing 1 cup flour 2 eggs, beaten 1 1/2 cups panko breadcrumbs 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper Cooking spray Ranch or blue cheese dressing for dipping INSTRUCTIONS

1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F. 2. In a large mixing bowl, combine chicken, hot sauce, cheese, chives and ranch. Roll into golf ball-sized balls. Refrigerate as you set up dredging station. 3. Use three shallow bowls, fill one with flour, one with the beaten eggs and the third with panko and pepper—mixing the two ingredients to combine. Dip each buffalo chicken ball in flour, then the egg, then the panko mixture. Set the balls about 1” apart on an aluminum foil-lined baking sheet. Spritz buffalo chicken balls with cooking spray. 4.
