September Style: Celebration of Style in All Its Forms September is here, and with it comes a celebration of style in all its forms. From the way we dress and decorate our spaces to how we gather, create, and express ourselves, style shapes the rhythm of our community and tells the story of who we are. After some time away on maternity leave, I’m thrilled to be back, refreshed and inspired—especially excited to share a special moment with you: a photo of my little one, Kohen, who has brought so much joy and new perspective to my life and work. In this issue, we shine a spotlight on Tulsa’s vibrant creative spirit through the stories of local talents whose unique styles inspire us all. You’ll meet Kacey Gilpin, our staff photographer, whose artistic eye brings every feature to life; Chris Kent, a Tulsa-based artist whose bold, layered works embrace imperfection and discovery; and interior designer Justice Quinn, who has quietly carved out a name for himself by blending vintage and contemporary elements into interiors rich with character. Quinn’s recent restoration of The Oath Studio, a 1920s Tulsa landmark, showcases his refined vision—honoring historic architecture while creating luxurious, intentional spaces filled with collectible vintage furnishings and custom details. We also dive into the surprising world of Mahjong, a centuries-old Chinese tile game that has blossomed into one of Tulsa’s most welcoming communities. Founded by longtime friends Courtney Wilson and Heather Duncan, The Mahjong Social Club is more than a game—it’s a movement building bridges across generations and backgrounds through lessons, leagues, and retreats. Together, these stories capture the authenticity, artistry, and heart of Tulsa—a city where style goes beyond trends to embody our community’s soul. We invite you to explore, be inspired, and maybe discover a new style of your own this month. Naturally, this issue features a carefully curated calendar of the season’s best fall events—from the Tulsa State Fair and cozy outdoor concerts to philanthropic gatherings and family-friendly activities. Fall is here—the season when the air turns crisp, leaves transform into brilliant hues, and the pace of life invites us to slow down and savor simple pleasures. As Tulsa shifts into this vibrant season, a unique style and spirit come alive—rooted in comfort, creativity, and community. Two years ago, what started as a casual curiosity about a centuries-old Chinese game blossomed into one of Tulsa’s most vibrant and welcoming communities. Today, The Mahjong Social Club isn’t just teaching people how to play—it’s building bridges, sparking friendships, and proving that Mahjong is so much more than a game. At the heart of this movement are Courtney Wilson and Heather Duncan, two longtime friends and civic-minded women whose bond began nearly 15 years ago while serving together on the board of the Junior League of Tulsa. Though their kids never shared a classroom and life often pulled them in different directions, the two remained close—living just three blocks apart and constantly collaborating. Courtney, the club’s founder, was first introduced to Mahjong through a friend in Tulsa. Intrigued by the rapidly growing enthusiasm surrounding the game, she decided to give it a try. “I saw people I admired playing it and loving it,” she recalls. That spark of interest quickly grew into something more. Initially, Courtney hosted themed Mahjong parties, but it didn’t take long to realize the real need was instruction. So she pivoted—and The Mahjong Social Club was born.
“WHAT STARTED AS A THEMED PARTY IDEA TURNED INTO SOMETHING much bigger. PEOPLE DIDN’T JUST WANT TO PLAY —they wanted to learn. THAT’S WHEN WE KNEW WE HAD SOMETHING SPECIAL.” CONTINUED > S EP TEMB ER 2 0 2 5 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C O M / T UL SA

As the demand for lessons grew, Courtney turned to Heather. “I love Mahjong, but I love Courtney more,” Heather says, chuckling. She was originally “tricked” into learning the game by three mentors who insisted she join a retreat— but only if she first learned to play. What started as a reluctant introduction turned into a true passion. With a background in nonprofit management and retail, Heather brought organizational savvy and a heart for community. She officially bought into the business in January. Together, they’ve built more than a club—they’ve created a movement. For those unfamiliar, Mahjong is an ancient Chinese tile game that combines strategy, memory, and a touch of luck. The version taught by The Mahjong Social Club is the American adaptation, which gained popularity in the U.S. during the 1920s and saw a resurgence during the pandemic. The club offers beginner-friendly lessons, typically lasting about two hours, with a thoughtful 4:1 student-to-teacher ratio to ensure everyone receives personalized guidance. No prior experience is required— just curiosity and a willingness to learn. But what sets the club apart is what happens after those first lessons. Open play nights, strategy workshops, private sessions, and a growing six-week league help players sharpen their skills while staying connected. Their multiday “Camp Mahj” retreat has drawn attendees from across Oklahoma and beyond. The community is diverse and multigenerational—ranging in age from 9 to 92. “Mahjong does not discriminate,” Courtney says. “We’ve seen people reconnect with friends from old chapters of their lives.”

“FOR THOSE UNFAMILIAR, Mahjong is an ancient Chinese tile game THAT COMBINES STRATEGY, MEMORY, AND A TOUCH OF LUCK.” Looking ahead, the vision is expansive. Heather and Courtney see Mahjong as a powerful tool for connection—not just socially, but philanthropically. “It’s fun, mentally engaging, and competitive in the best way,” Heather says. “There’s real potential to use Mahjong events in place of traditional fundraisers.” With her nonprofit background, she sees the game’s potential for deeper impact. Currently, the club boasts seven trained instructors and has plans to grow. A brandnew website will soon offer easier booking, instructor spotlights, and potentially virtual classes. As brand ambassadors for The Mahjong Line—a company known for its modern, colorful Mahjong sets—Courtney and Heather are adding style and accessibility to a game rooted in rich tradition. As The Mahjong Social Club celebrates its second anniversary, the energy is electric and the possibilities are endless. “This has happened so organically,” Heather says, “but the scope is truly limitless.” Curious about the club? Find them online at mahjsocial.com or email hey@mahjsocial.com.

Fourteen years ago, I picked up a camera with the goal of preserving the fleeting moments of motherhood. Driven to capture moments of my children and our everyday life in an evocative way, I taught myself manual mode and discovered a love for savoring home and family through photography. I didn’t realize it then, but this instinct started me on a path I had never envisioned. As friends started their families, they began asking me to photograph newborn and lifestyle sessions for them. By the time my fourth baby was born, I had “accidentally” started a photography business. But being behind the lens felt natural to me. Over time, I explored different avenues, like wedding photography, but it was lifestyle storytelling that truly resonated and laid the foundation for the business I own today. I now specialize in interior design and editorial photography, often traveling to design-rich cities like New York, Austin, Denver, and Raleigh. My work has appeared in publications and books including Architectural Digest, Forbes, Clever, House Beautiful, and The Wall Street Journal. Later this year, I’m excited to shoot in Denver again and, for the first time, in Santa Fe and Tahoe. My path into interiors came through relationships— starting when friends Bailey Austin and Mel Bean trusted me to photograph their Tulsa projects in 2019. Behind the lens, I fell in love with the design industry and its creative community. Interiors now make up the bulk of my work, and in 2022, I hired my first assistant, Vora Quinn, who’s grown into a full-time team member and treasured friend. Much of what I create today is a collaboration between us. Many clients have also
become trusted friends, reminding me that this journey, like it began, is deeply rooted in relationships. Beyond photography, I actively pitch my clients’ work to national media, advocating for Oklahoma designers whose talent deserves wider recognition. I have found that elevating someone’s vision through thoughtful imagery and strategic placement is deeply rewarding. Beyond interiors, I’m also passionate about artist portraiture—documenting makers in their element, from a ceramist’s messy hands at the wheel to the stories and color that shape their work. These sessions aren’t just for websites—they honor the labor and soul behind the art. Another beloved part of my work is Black + White Sessions, which I began nine years ago in my son’s nursery. These timeless, heirloom portraits of children and families are shot in classic black and white. Families return year after year to document their children’s growth, and these sessions, held monthly in Tulsa and occasionally in OKC and Dallas, remain deeply fulfilling to me. I don’t see myself ever stopping them. My photography journey has been anything but linear. It began with a mother’s instinct to hold onto the small things and has evolved into a full-time, multi-dimensional business rooted in storytelling, design, and connection. Balancing this work while raising four young children as a single mother isn’t easy. I’ve dropped the ball more than once and felt the burnout that can come when passion becomes work—but I’ve never lost sight of my purpose. I’m grateful to do this work and to show my children what it means to build something meaningful through perseverance, creativity, heart, and authentic relationships. CONTINUED >

Built to Break, Made to Rebuild Chris Kent’s path from digital design to raw expression ARTICLE BY CHRIS KENT | PHOTOGRAPHY BY KACEY GILPIN
Chris, a native of Big Cabin, Oklahoma, now based in Tulsa, returned to his home state after nearly two decades in Seattle. His journey reflects resilience and creative evolution. He studied painting and sculpture at Rogers State University before moving to Seattle, where he quickly realized he couldn’t afford both living expenses and school. Joining the Air Force allowed him to continue his education while exploring different career paths. Having grown up helping his dad work on cars, he saw auto mechanics as a potential long-term career—until physical injuries brought that to an end. Forced to pursue a less physically demanding job, he applied to the graphic design program at Seattle Central Creative Academy, where he developed a strong visual sensibility and a deeper understanding of his creative process. Two contrasting voices define Chris’s artistic practice. One is sharp, graphic, and illustrative, characterized by bold lines and vivid colors inspired by cartoons and graffiti. These works convey energy and clarity through a visual language rooted in design. The other side of his work is abstract and tactile, emphasizing texture, layering, and experimentation. These pieces often emerge intuitively, embracing rawness and imperfection reminiscent of graffiti’s unrefined edge. After a five-year hiatus from painting while working exclusively in digital media, Chris returned to physical materials following his move back to Tulsa. This renewed

exploration began with a solo show and a desire to create looser, more expressive work. Drawing on a gridbased typographic style he had developed digitally, he initially experimented with mops and larger brushes to bring this structured style into his paintings. His Remnants series emerged from this period. When two large works titled “Rage” and “Hope” no longer fit in his new studio, Chris repurposed them, cutting them up and reassembling the fragments into sculptural forms. Each piece in the series became a new challenge, incorporating different fill materials and mounting techniques. The process of construction and the element of unpredictability reinvigorated his practice. This series marked a turning point: Chris realized he was finally creating the kind of work he had always admired—art that’s both constructed and expressive, structured yet spontaneous. Through this hands-on process, he reconnected with the joy of making, embracing imperfection and discovery as central elements of his creative identity.

INGREDIENTS • 1 1/2 oz- Cucumber & dragon fruit gin • 3/4oz- Toasted black sesame Velvet Falernum • 1/2oz- Lime juice • Topped with ginger beer • Hawaiian black lava salt & black sesame
GARNISH • Small paint brush • Simple syrup • Hawaiian black lava salt mixed with a pinch of black sesame
INSTRUCTIONS Infused Gin: Infuse 1 whole peeled and cut cucumber in gin for a week. Strain the cucumbers out. Add 1 tablespoon of organic dragonfruit powder and mix very well with a whisk. To make the syrup, toast 1/2 cup of black sesame at 350 for 10 minutes. Take it out and let it cool. In a mortar and pestle, grind the toasted black sesame, but not too fine. Add the sesame into one bottle of John D. Taylor’s Velvet Falernum. Let that set for about 2 to 3 days and use cheese cloth to strain out the fine bits of sesame. Juice one fresh lime and strain to remove the pulp.
Cocktail: Paint a strip of simple syrup down a Collins glass. Take a spoon full of Hawaiian black lava salt mixed with black sesame and layer that down where the painted simple syrup was placed. In a shaker tin combine: 1 1/2oz cucumber dragon fruit gin, 3/4oz toasted black sesame Velvet Falernum, and 1/2oz lime juice and shake that up! Fill the painted glass with ice (I use crushed ice) and strain over the ice. Top with your favorite ginger beer (my choice is Fever Tree ginger beer).

this unexpected love affair, fashion and interiors are more than just a simple pairing—they are rooted in culture, creativity, and the human desire for self-expression. As conscious consumers of the 21st century, participating in a retail landscape that is oversaturated and struggling to adapt to the ever-changing demands of the modern customer, our purchasing power should not only respond to a feeling of want but also prioritize items that reflect who we are and who we aspire to be. This is clearly visible through the representation of fashion and interiors. Although we tend to consider cost-per-wear primarily when it comes to clothing, this same principle applies to furniture and the function it brings to the
home. Aesthetics and functionality both play a role in this pairing, painting a picture for the rest of the world of who the wearer is and how they live in their space. The woman who wears a blazer with sharp shoulders that makes her feel powerful in her everyday life—or the black dress that gives her a necessary boost of confidence—may naturally gravitate toward sleek, modern furniture that feels equally strong and elevates the space where the modern woman thrives. In the same way, someone who prefers an effortless ensemble—like their favorite white T-shirt and comfortable denim jeans—may also look for home pieces that are functional and make their guests feel at ease. Just as we carefully choose outfits to express ourselves, it’s equally important to ensure that our living spaces are designed with the same intention. More than ever, modern buyers are making purchasing decisions based on personal morals and values, forming a new wave of consumers who seek products that are both high-quality and environmentally or socially conscious, whether for themselves or their homes. The following imagery affirms that living a timeless lifestyle across all aspects of life is possible through the thoughtful styling of sustainable clothing and vintage furniture. As the modern retail landscape continues to evolve, it’s become increasingly vital to make conscious consumer choices—ones that allow us to express our truest selves through both our wardrobes and the places we call home.

While his work in restoration is deeply meaningful, Quinn’s true passion is residential design. His studio is known for interiors that are rich in character and layered with intention. Living and breathing design, he thrives when given creative freedom, whether through renovations, new builds with custom detailing, or by curating every piece of art, object, and furniture to completely transform an existing space. His approach appeals to clients who want more than trenddriven design, opting instead for spaces that feel luxurious, collected, and intentional. He often blends eras and materials, pairing vintage Italian lighting with luxury finishes, or custom upholstery with contemporary art, to create homes that strike a refined balance between old and new.
