Rediscover Tulsa This Summer

Summer is in full bloom here in Tulsa, and with it comes the energy, warmth, and sense of adventure that makes this season so unforgettable. For many of us, summer stirs memories of childhood—running barefoot through the grass, cooling off under sprinklers, hiking the dusty trails of Turkey Mountain, catching lightning bugs at dusk, or swaying to live music in a park as the sun sets. There’s a certain magic to summer in Tulsa—one that’s rooted in both nature and community.

This month, we’re embracing that spirit with our July issue, themed “Explore.” We invite you to rediscover Tulsa—not just the city, but the people, places, and passion that make it a destination in its own right.

One of our featured stories takes you around River Spirit Casino Resort, where CEO Pat Crofts shares how his vision transformed the property into a destination resort right here in the heart of Oklahoma. It’s a testament to what’s possible when ambition and community investment come together.

You’ll also journey into the serene beauty of the Tulsa Botanic Garden, where Jonesplan, led by Justin and Matt Jones, has helped shape a world-class space that seamlessly blends horticulture, art, and family-friendly exploration. Their craftsmanship and care are woven into the paths and pavilions they helped create, making the garden not just a destination, but an experience.

For those looking to get moving this summer, we highlight local fitness resource Ready 2 Row, offering an insightful how-to on proper rowing form. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned athlete, it's a perfect way to stay active and cool while exploring new ways to exercise.

And, of course, this issue includes a curated calendar of the season’s best events— from fireworks and festivals to concerts, markets, and family fun. Whether you're planning a picnic at the park, heading to a summer night concert, or browsing handmade treasures at a local fair, there’s no shortage of ways to explore Tulsa this month.

Our hope is that this issue inspires you to step outside and embrace the beauty and adventure that summer in Tulsa has to offer. From our family to yours—happy exploring!

Warmly,

July 2025

Endoscopy and Laparoscopy Surgery in Tulsa

At Animal Emergency Center of Tulsa, the team aims not only to care for pets’ immediate needs but also to plan for their recovery. Their veterinarian, Dr. Khris Keller, is trained in both endoscopic and laparoscopic procedures. These surgeries involve two to three keyhole-sized incisions, through which a small camera and surgical instruments are inserted. These dog and cat surgeries provide a less invasive alternative to traditional open surgery, significantly reducing many associated risks.

A World-Class Escape in THE HEART OF TULSA

Just minutes from downtown Tulsa, nestled along the banks of the Arkansas River, sits a resort that feels more like Las Vegas than Oklahoma. River Spirit Casino Resort is a luxury experience, an entertainment hub, and a retreat that rivals the country's most renowned resorts. In a recent conversation with Pat Crofts, CEO of Muscogee Nation Gaming Enterprises, we gained insight into the vision, partnerships, and purpose behind what has become one of Tulsa’s most iconic destinations. When Pat Crofts took the reins, his vision wasn’t just to build another casino. It was to elevate the entire guest experience and redefine what a resort could be in Oklahoma. “From the very beginning, we wanted to create a true resort,” he said.

“Something refined, polished, and immersive. A place people would choose not just for fun, but to relax, to dine, to celebrate.”

It’s this mindset that led him to reach out, completely unprompted, to the CEO of Margaritaville. “I cold-called him,” Crofts shared with a laugh. “I said, ‘I think Tulsa is ready for an internationally recognized brand like Margaritaville.’” That one call sparked what would become a game-changing partnership, transforming the resort into a tropical, laid-back destination with signature Margaritaville flair. With the addition of

Jimmy Buffett’s iconic brand came an instant energy shift: tropical theming, lively music, and an atmosphere that felt like vacation from the moment you walked in. But River Spirit didn’t stop there. They partnered with Ruth’s Chris Steak House to anchor their fine dining offerings, further elevating the experience with world-class cuisine. Add in a sprawling pool terrace, private cabanas, a luxury spa, and modern guest rooms featuring tribal artwork and high-end finishes, and it’s clear. This isn’t just a casino, it’s a resort in every sense of the word. Whether you’re booking a romantic weekend, a girls’ spa getaway, or just need a mid-week recharge, River Spirit offers more than a reason to stay. It offers a reason to stay longer. Guests can enjoy live performances at The Cove Theater, sip cocktails poolside, or unwind with a massage at Emerge Spa & Salon. “We’ve really focused on building an all-encompassing experience,” Crofts said. “You don’t need to hop on a plane to Vegas or fly to the coast. It’s all here.” The resort’s customer service, Crofts noted, is a cornerstone of its success. “It’s not just about amenities. It’s about how people feel when they walk through the door. Every touchpoint matters.” While River Spirit embraces internationally recognized names, its foundation is proudly local and CONTINUED >

deeply cultural. Owned and operated by the Muscogee Nation Gaming Enterprises, the resort seamlessly blends modern luxury with tribal heritage. Guests will notice carefully curated tribal artwork throughout the property, a nod to the community and culture that made this vision possible. Crofts emphasizes the importance of intentionality in leadership and business. One of his key takeaways for other professionals? “Always take the time to hear both sides of a story,” he advised. “Especially when working with staff. Never make snap decisions.” Tulsa locals have quickly learned that they don’t need to go far for an upscale getaway. River Spirit has become a staycation favorite, and with its growing popularity, it’s gaining national attention too. Whether you’re there for a night of entertainment, a spa weekend, or a five-star meal with a view, River Spirit Casino Resort invites you to indulge, unwind, and escape without ever leaving Tulsa.

Row. Rhythm.

CATCH

Start in a strong, ready position. Sit tall at the front of the rower with shins vertical, arms extended, and core engaged. Keep shoulders relaxed. This is where the power begins. Settle into the beat of the music and prepare to drive through your legs. Think calm before the storm—controlled, connected, and ready to move.

DRIVE

Push through your heels, extending your legs while keeping your arms straight. As your legs near full extension, swing your torso back slightly, then finally pull with your arms. This explosive movement powers each stroke. The music helps keep your drive sharp, synchronized, and strong—just like in a dance class, you're moving in rhythm and intensity.

FINISH

Lean slightly back with legs extended and elbows pulled in close, handle at your chest. Then reverse the motion: arms forward, hinge at the hips, bend the knees, and return to the catch. Controlled recovery sets you up for the next powerful stroke. Now you’ve got the rhythm, the form, and the flow—consider yourself a rowing pro. See you next class!

CRAFTING AND CULTIVATING TULSA’S

Botanical Treasure

Jonesplan has played a key role in shaping Tulsa’s premier garden destination.

Nestled in the heart of our city, the Tulsa Botanic Garden offers a serene escape into nature, blending art, horticulture, and community spirit. Over the past decade, Jonesplan, a local construction firm, has played a pivotal role in bringing this vision to life, transforming the garden into a vibrant destination for families and nature enthusiasts alike.

Founded in 2003 by Justin Jones, a horticulturist and landscape architect, and Matt Jones, an expert in the landscape construction industry, Jonesplan began as a company specializing in golf course construction. With a keen eye for detail and a passion for outdoor spaces, the company evolved to tackle larger, more intricate projects. Their expertise in landscape construction, combined with a commitment to quality and communication, has made them a trusted partner for public and community spaces.

Their journey with the Tulsa Botanic Garden commenced in 2014, when they were selected as the general contractor for the Floral Terraces project. This marked the beginning of an ongoing series of collaborations that has spanned over a decade, each project adding a unique layer to the garden's evolving landscape.

The Floral Terraces, completed in 2015, set the tone for Jonesplan’s involvement. Spanning over three acres, the terraces feature formal landscaping with cast stone and concrete water channels, native stone walls, and glass pavilions. Every detail was meticulously crafted, with measurements precise to a quarter-inch, ensuring a harmonious blend with the natural surroundings. “This was our most technical project,” says Brad Kmita, senior project manager at Jonesplan. “Beyond the fact that it required a lot of straight lines and symmetry, plans were also developing during construction, and details were being given on the fly.”

Following this, the Children's Discovery Garden was constructed, offering a whimsical environment where children could engage with nature through interaction. Designed not as a traditional playground but as an exploratory space, it includes features like the Spring Giant—a 20-foot hand-carved stone face—and the Stream Valley, a flowing water feature that meanders through the garden. “Designs are actually underway for a renovation of the Children’s Garden to add more child-friendly activities that support gross and fine motor skill development,” Brad added.

In 2023, Jonesplan completed two significant additions: the Lotus Pool and the Liberty Garden. The Lotus Pool is an aquatic garden adorned with floating gardens and water lily shelves, creating a tranquil oasis. Adjacent to it, the Liberty Garden extends into the central lake, connected by a 31-foot pre-engineered bridge, offering panoramic views and a serene setting for events. “These two projects were probably our most difficult due to the large incorporation of the lake into the designs, not to mention they were being built simultaneously,” Brad noted.

Working within a botanical environment presents unique challenges. Jonesplan’s approach emphasizes preserving the existing landscape, utilizing native materials, and integrating design elements that complement the natural beauty of the garden. For instance, during the construction of the Children's Discovery Garden, the team employed helical piers to minimize disruption to the mature post oak grove, ensuring the longevity of the trees. “We have a conscious mindset in our projects to preserve the existing landscape. If we need to hand dig it, we’re going to hand dig it. We aren’t looking to take the easy way out, we want to go about our work in the way that is best for the project.”

Attention to detail is evident in subtle features throughout the garden. “A lot of times, we have to be surgical with our projects, fitting them into the surrounding landscape without disturbing it,” says Brad. “A fun fact about each of our projects is that somewhere within each one, there is an inconspicuous date etched into a stone or part of the scenery to mark the

With over 20 years of experience, Jonesplan specializes in complex landscape construction projects, including parks, botanic gardens, and environmental restoration. Their expertise encompasses construction management, general contracting, and subcontracting roles, consistently ensuring meticulous attention to detail and the highest standards of quality. Notable projects include the Floral Terraces and Children's Discovery Garden at the Tulsa Botanic Garden.

“Our involvement has always been about more than just construction; it's about creating spaces that families can enjoy and cherish. ”

year each section was constructed. But they are very inconspicuous, you have to try and find them!”—a hidden gem for visitors to discover.

Beyond their technical expertise, Jonesplan’s commitment to the community is reflected in their work at the Tulsa Botanic Garden. Brad notes that the company's involvement has always been about more than just construction; it's about creating spaces that families can enjoy and cherish. Their contributions have helped transform the garden into a beloved destination, fostering a deeper connection between the community and nature.

For families seeking a place to explore this summer, the Tulsa Botanic Garden offers a wealth of experiences. From the towering Spring Giant in the Children's Discovery Garden to the tranquil reflections in the Lotus Pool, each corner invites discovery. The Liberty Garden provides a peaceful retreat with its expansive lawn and scenic views, perfect for a leisurely picnic or a quiet moment of reflection.

As you explore these thoughtfully designed spaces, take a moment to appreciate the craftsmanship and care behind their creation. Throughout the gardens Jonesplan has helped bring to life, their legacy is etched into every path, pavilion, and planting—making the Tulsa Botanic Garden not just a place to visit, but a place to truly experience, explore, and enjoy. It really is a world-class destination.

Canyon Odyssey: Fedarko and McBride

A 750-mile journey revealing the heart, beauty, and fragility of America's greatest natural wonder

Kevin Fedarko and Pete McBride will take Tulsa Town Hall attendees on the expedition of a lifetime. Two friends, zero preparation, one dream: a 750-mile odyssey, on foot, through the heart of America’s most magnificent national park and the grandest wilderness on Earth. Celebrated author and adventure writer Fedarko, and photographer, filmmaker, writer, and conservationist McBride, were named “National Geographic Adventurers of the Year” after making the journey documented in Grand Canyon: Between River and Rim.

Native Coloradan Pete McBride spent two decades studying the world with a camera. A photographer, filmmaker, writer, and public speaker, he is a Sony Artisan of Imagery and has traveled on assignment to over 75 countries for the National Geographic Society, Smithsonian, Google, and The Nature Conservancy.

After a decade documenting remote expeditions from Everest to Antarctica, McBride decided to focus his cameras closer to home and heart—his backyard river, the Colorado River. Four years and 1,500 river miles later, McBride produced an acclaimed book, three award-winning documentaries, and co-hosted a PBS TV program. The National Geographic Society named McBride a “Freshwater Hero.”

Kevin Fedarko spent most of the past 20 years writing about adventure, conservation, exploration, and the Grand Canyon. He studied Russian history at Oxford before joining the staff of TIME magazine’s foreign affairs desk, then became a senior editor at Outside magazine. His writing has appeared in National Geographic, The New York Times, and Esquire.

Fedarko, who lives in Flagstaff, Arizona, is the author of The Emerald Mile: The Epic Story of the Fastest Ride in History Through the Heart of the Grand Canyon, which recounts the true story of a small wooden dory and three river guides. In the summer of 1983, they pitted the dory against the largest flood to sweep the Colorado River in generations, with the aim of setting an unbreakable speed record. The New York Times bestseller won the National Outdoor Book Award and the Reading the West Award, and is regarded as an essential text for those who revere the Grand Canyon.

Together, McBride and Fedarko journeyed on an epic quest on foot through the entire length of the Grand Canyon—not “rim to rim,” as many have tackled—but 750 miles “end to end.” Hiking over 100 days, Pete and Kevin traversed mostly along the goat trail, through slot canyons, blinding sun, and snow. Part sufferfest, part glorious trek, their expedition sheds light on the health and future of this national treasure and invites us to contemplate the value of wild spaces.

Jonesplan’s primary focus at the Gathering Place was to install the oversized native stones throughout the park.

You would recognize them as the landscape walls for bench seating, the jagged hillside for the Slide Vale, the spiral walkway at the Adventure Playground, the boulders at the Water Mountain, the giant rocks at Willow Beach and the giant embankment slabs at Peggy’s Pond.
