Kids & Pets

I hope this letter finds you in good health and high spirits.

This issue is always one of my favorites. I suppose because of the immense joy that children bring to their families and the significant impact they make on their communities.

Children are not merely the hope for a brighter tomorrow; they are the foundation upon which our society stands. Their innocence, curiosity, and boundless potential have the power to shape the world in ways we can only imagine. Kids represent our hardest work and greatest investment and we are happy to highlight the best for Tulsa kids in this issue.

Secondarily, who could forget pets? The special kind of companionship can be a transformative experience for children and adults alike. Pets provide us with unconditional love, the opportunity to learn, grow and develop essential life skills in a nurturing environment. And who could ignore the bond between kids and their furry or feathery friends? The bond is often deep and meaningful, fostering qualities like empathy, responsibility, and companionship.

Although children are of infinitely more value, what children and pets share in common is that they need us. Our care, attention and intention shapes how they are raised and who they become. We hope this issue inspires you to pour a little extra into the children and pets in your life this month.

Cheers!

Pet Safety: Beat the Heat

HOT WEATHER SAFETY TIPS FOR YOUR PETS

The dog days of summer have definitely arrived in NE Oklahoma. The hot summer temperatures can be very dangerous to our pets making them prone to illnesses and injuries like dehydration and heat stroke.

TIPS TO HELP LESSEN THE CHANCES FOR HEAT RELATED INJURIES

• Walk or exercise your pet during the cooler times of day, usually early morning or dusk.

• Humidity is particularly dangerous when combined with high temperatures; do not exercise or play excessively with your pets during these times.

• Allow access to cool/shaded water at all times when outdoors and avoid metal drinking bowls as they contribute to the heating effects on the water.

• Pavement, roads, and concrete can be EXTREMELY hot and burn the pads of the paws. Walk pets on grass

and try to avoid hot surfaces whenever possible. Paw booties can be purchased and placed over the paws to prevent thermal burns.

• If your pet shows signs of overheating including excessive panting, loud or raspy panting, falling behind on walks, etc. STOP all activity immediately, bath with cool water (not cold water or ice) and contact a veterinarian immediately.

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY ORU ATHLETICS

The Oral Roberts baseball team compiled one of the most historic seasons in program history in 2023 after reaching the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska, for the first time since 1978.

The Golden Eagles, who became the third No. 4 seed in NCAA history to advance to the College World Series, reached the postseason after claiming their 21st Summit League Championship title. Making their 30th NCAA Regional appearance, 18th since 2001, ORU swept the Stillwater Regional as they defeated No. 11 overall seed

Oklahoma State, Washington and Dallas Baptist. The Golden Eagles then rallied to take the final two of three on the road against Oregon in the Eugene Super Regional to punch their ticket to Omaha.

At the College World Series, a three-run ninth inning homer from Blaze Brothers propelled ORU to a 6-5 victory over TCU in the opening game. The Golden Eagles then fell in a heartbreaker to No. 2 Florida, 5-4, before seeing their 2023 campaign come to a close in an elimination game against TCU.

Under the guidance of head coach Ryan Folmar, the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Mike Martin National Coach of the Year, ORU went 52-14 and recorded a 23-1 mark in Summit League play. The 52 victories were a program record (DI-era) and marked the first 50-win season since 2004.

In its final 48 games, ORU went 42-6 and set a program record (DI-era) with 21 consecutive wins from April 23-June

4. The Golden Eagles finished the year ranked inside the Top 8 in every national poll, including a No. 5 ranking by Collegiate Baseball, which matched the highest in program history.

On a team that was loaded with talent, closer Cade Denton and center fielder Jonah Cox shined the brightest as the duo was recognized as consensus AllAmericans. The duo became the first Golden Eagles since Mark Serrano in 2009 to earn multiple All-America honors in a single season.

Denton was also tabbed as the NCBWA Stopper of the Year, which recognized the nation’s top reliever, and the Summit League Pitcher of the Year. The junior, who led the nation and matched a program record with 15 saves, logged a 1.83 ERA and struck out 86 batters in 64 innings of work. In a program-best 35

appearances, Denton held opponents to a .211 batting average.

Cox, who was named the Summit League Player/Newcomer of the Year, led the nation and set a program/League record with 114 hits. The junior topped the Golden Eagles with a .412 average and also registered 11 homers, 16 doubles, eight triples, 68 RBI and 28 stolen bases. Cox also compiled a 47-game hit streak during the season, which ranked as the third longest in NCAA history.

In the Summit League, the Golden Eagles racked up plenty of postseason accolades as the team had a conference-best 13 players named to the All-League teams.

Senior first baseman Jake McMurray tallied his third consecutive first team honor, while Cox, Matt Hogan, Drew Stahl, Jakob Hall and Denton joined him on the squad. Shortstop Mac McCroskey, who was the named the Defensive Player of the Year, headlined the second team, which included Jacob Godman, Holden Breeze, Justin Quinn, Brooks Fowler and Harley Gollert. Brothers rounded out the AllLeague honors after being named to the honorable mention team.

The 2023 campaign was truly historic for an ORU squad that is no stranger to winning as it entered the season ranked sixth all-time in NCAA history with a .652 winning percentage.

The Road to Omaha again

A 45 YEAR JOURNEY CREATES STRONG BONDS AND EVERLASTING FRIENDSHIPS

It was a special time in 1978 when the Oral Roberts baseball team made it to the College World Series. This year, 45 years later, the 2023 team made history and became the third No. 4 seed in NCAA history to advance to the College World Series. The texts and phone calls began between the 1978 team members and they decided they had to go. Six members were able to make it to Omaha and we talked with them to find out about their very special road trip. The teammates were Vince Bienek –Sonoma, CA, Bruce Heiser – Nashville, TN, Ron Meridith – Yarmouth, ME, Gary D’Onofrio – Frisco, TX, Buddy Slemp – Tulsa, OK and Bill Springman – Tulsa, OK. The road trip began when Vince flew into Tulsa so he, Bill and Buddy could catch up on life and reminisce while driving to Omaha.

Q. WHY DID YOU FEEL IT WAS IMPORTANT TO GO?

Buddy: It was important to support the 2023 ORU team and celebrate their magical run to the College World Series.

Ron: It was important to be there to support this year’s team as they accomplished something that took the program 45 years to get back.

Bill: The need to connect and support this historic ‘23 Team, coupled with getting together with my '78 teammates.

Vince: To represent 1978 and let them know after 45 years we still love the program! To also represent our teammates that couldn't be there. We sent pictures and texted back a forth the entire time we were in Omaha.

Bruce: This was my family that I lived with every day. As an 18 year old freshman, 2,500 miles from home, you rely on each other. Going to this year’s CWS felt like I was going to a family reunion. To show support to the 2023 team for their

accomplishment and represent the 1978 team members that couldn't make it.

Q. WHAT DID IT MEAN FOR YOU TO SEE OLD TEAMMATES?

Gary: It was great to be together and reminisce. We still share a strong bond as lifelong teammates.

Bill: It meant everything! More than teammates, they are my brothers.

Vince: We picked up where we left off; a lot of stories and laughing. The stories get better with the years!

Ron: Reconnecting with my old teammates and reminiscing about the journey it took for us to get to the College World Series and where we all went after personally and professionally was a once in a lifetime opportunity and I wouldn’t have missed it for anything.

Q. WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF THE TRIP?

Bill: Seeing my teammates/brothers, reminiscing and watching the games.

Vince: We rented a big house on a river. Five of us stayed there and sat outside and talked until the early hours of the morning. Watching the first TCU game and the comeback in the 8th inning was absolutely incredible! The crowd was going crazy!

Bruce: Spending time with teammates I went to battle with. As a freshman in ‘78, Bill, Buddy, Ron, Vince and George (Bjorkman) were our leaders. 45 years later they are still leading. And, of course, the great stories that have gotten better over time.

Buddy: Being with my brothers and sharing this special moment with them.

Gary: Watching the current team play great baseball and catching up with teammates from ‘78.

Q. WHAT DID IT FEEL LIKE GOING BACK AFTER 45 YEARS?

Bruce: Nostalgic, very emotional and proud of what our team accomplished.

Buddy: It brought back wonderful memories and allowed us to view the CWS from an alumni's perspective.

Gary: It was fun to be a part of the great CWS atmosphere. Omaha has done a great job of supporting and promoting college baseball and Omaha was a great host.

Q. IF YOU COULD TELL THE YOUNG MEN ON TODAY’S TEAM SOMETHING, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

Bruce: Enjoy the moment. Life has many ups and downs. This is a mountain top moment to always hang on to.

Buddy: You are now in an elite group of former players. Enjoy what you have achieved and work to help another ORU team to surpass our accomplishments.

Gary: Stay connected to each other and relish the time you have together.

Bill: This journey and team camaraderie means a lot to you now, but pales in comparison to how much more it will mean as you get older.

Vince: You represented ORU in an amazing way and gained many new fans on the way. Your accomplishments are spectacular! I'm very proud to have been a part of this baseball program.

Q. WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO TELL OUR READERS ABOUT THE ORU BASEBALL PROGRAM OR WHAT IT HAS MEANT TO YOU?

Buddy: It is special to be a part of forming the foundation of this Program. It was just as special that this Program allowed me to earn a college degree, realize a boyhood dream of playing in the CWS and professional baseball as well as being successful in life.

Gary: The ORU baseball program has been good for the past 50 years and produced many great teams and players as demonstrated by 200 professional players and 20+ major leaguers.

Bill: For 46 years, ORU Baseball has one of the highest winning percentages in the country. More importantly, the University and program turns out successful people of faith and influence.

Vince: The 1978 team really likes each other! We have a dedicated text thread that includes the entire 1978 baseball team. We stay in touch and share current events and even pray for one another and our families. I guess a team that prays together, stays together!

Bruce: It's a winning program that's doing it the "right way". It changed my life for the better over 45 years ago. The fans were awesome for our team and the 2023 team.

SEAL CAVITIES out

SEALANTS FOR SUMMER

WHAT IS A SEALANT?

A sealant is a tooth-colored material that is placed on the biting surface of “virgin” molar (back) teeth. “Virgin,” meaning there are no cavities or fillings already on the tooth. The material is flowable enough to go into the nooks and crannies of the tooth to provide a protective barrier against bacteria that can cause cavities.

WHY DO I NEED THEM?

Sealants offer another layer of defense against bacteria that cause cavities. Once cavities form, you’ll need part of that tooth removed and replaced with a filling. Large cavities can turn into bigger more expensive dental work like crowns or even extracting of the tooth. Sealants are great preventive procedures since they are usually inexpensive, quick, painless, and you don’t need to be numb.

WHO SHOULD GET THEM?

While mostly kids and teens get them, anyone who has molar teeth that do not have any cavities or fillings on those teeth can get sealants.

HOW LONG DO THEY LAST?

Sealants usually last from 5-10 years but can last longer. Sealants are more effective at protecting against cavities in the first few years. Like crowns or fillings, sealants will last longer the easier you are on your teeth. We suggest staying away from high sugar diets and not chewing on ice or other sharp things as that can break down the sealant over time or break the sealant completely. While they can last a long time, nothing will replace good oral hygiene-brushing after every meal and flossing at least once a day.

CAN I STILL GET CAVITIES IF I GET A SEALANT?

It's possible. While they are a simple way to help protect against cavities, sealants won’t protect your teeth against decay 100%. In the first few years, sealants offer about 80-85% protectiveness against cavities. After about 3 or 4 years, this goes down to about 50%. When you see your dentist, they can check the health of the sealants and “re-seal” them, extending the life of your sealant.

EXPERT HELP | HEALTH + WELLNESS
20

Again, brushing and flossing, a healthy low-sugar diet, limiting your snacking, and seeing your dentist for cleanings at least twice a year will be the best recipe for preventing cavities. Add in sealants and you’ve got a great chance at preventing tooth decay.

In my experience, people who get sealants on their back teeth will have a much better chance of little or no problems with these teeth in the future. It’s one of the best preventive procedures dentistry has to offer. I highly recommend them to all my patients, especially my younger ones!

Tracing separate property or assets in a divorce can be an important issue for lots of individuals. Take a situation where somebody has a 401k or IRA before marriage. They have put money into this account before marriage.

They then get married. After marriage, they continue to contribute to this 401k or IRA. At this point, pre-marital separate funds and marital funds are being mixed.

The parties then file for divorce. In these situations, the one spouse is often asking that the entire 401k or IRA be divided in the divorce. The spouse who had funds in these accounts before marriage argues that the pre-marital por-

The reality, however, is that the separate funds need to be traced out from the account. This often requires a forensic accountant reviewing statements and doing an analysis to determine the amount that was in these accounts during the marriage.

At a minimum, parties may need to subpoena the statements from the date of the marriage to try to determine the amount that was in there. However, it can often be hard to obtain statements at the exact date of the marriage.

In addition to 401ks or IRAs, tracing can be important for other assets like bank

accounts, investment accounts, whole life insurance policies, and other assets where a party might have built up cash value before marriage. In some instances, a party might consider having a prenuptial agreement drafted before getting married.

Building A Pastime Around The Campfire

BOYS WILL BE BOYS: IT’S ONLY NATURAL

It’s undeniable that we are connected to it, how we feel while in its midst. It was once a way of life, the “great outdoors” as it’s known. But in today’s world, being one with nature is not easy when we are many with life’s responsibilities. But one Tulsa family makes connecting with nature a priority. For them, turning off the modern world is as easy as a stroll in the woods.

For Amy and Ted Cavallin and their three sons, Will, 12, Drew, 10, and Cameron, 8, camping is quickly becoming a pastime. It’s growing and bonding in some of the most beautiful settings in the country. Colorado, New Mexico, Arkansas, Florida and several other states have become their home away from home. This family has chosen to make memories, not within the walls of a structure, but in the limitless confines of the outside world. And to see the three young boys light up when speaking about their adventures in the greatest playground ever conceived, one just knows there is no place like homewhere the campfire is always lit.

“It’s glorified tent camping,” Ted said. But certainly not ‘glamping,’ which is basically living with all the

comforts of home in an RV nestled in the outdoors. The family owns a pop-up camper primarily for sleeping, but all other activities, including cooking, are done outside. For this family, the only way to connect with nature is to be in nature.

They have camped from one coast to the other, setting up campsites in state, national and Corp of Engineers parks across the country. Their travels have taken them to California twice, camping in multiple states along the way. They pitch the pop-up, build campfires, and rig up the fishing gear at each new location. In addition, they have traveled to Florida and up the East Coast at multiple parks. The family always tries to camp near the water because the boys love to fish, Ted said. They have become quite proficient anglers as well, as seen from mom’s proud photos. Of course, dad still helps with the pole rigging. But the boys are learning more with each trip.

For the boys, it’s an experience in life that, in many ways, has been lost to the younger generations growing up in a technology-driven world. It’s an opportunity for boys to be boys… ya

know, with all those pesky little things that fly, slither, sting, and bite. The boys love them! Especially snakes.

“They’re all boy, fearless,” Ted said. Amy, on the other hand, is not so thrilled about the boys’ choice of playthings. But the experiences and memories the family is making are priceless, and certainly worth the cost of a few insect bites, stings, and the occasional snake handling. The boys are also learning about the creatures they are finding, even learning how to tell the difference between poisonous and non-poisonous snakes.

“Ted told me once that I act like I am raising girls when I am freaking out about them picking up snakes. I said ‘Well, I am a girl, and I don’t know what else to do’,” Amy quipped. But Amy, unlike Ted, who grew up camping, has become quite the camping enthusiast, even being the driving force behind the family camping experiences. She was intrigued by the stories relayed to her by Ted’s mother about family camping when Ted was a child. She fell in love with the idea and wanted to make it a part of their family experience. They now travel to campgrounds all over, even planning trips months in advance using the boys’ school calendar to not miss any opportunities.

The boys have certain aspects of camping they call their favorite. The big ones include exploring, snake hunting, campfire meals, meeting new people, and of course, fishing.

Cameron and his dad Ted enjoy a boating trip at Lake Ft. Smith State Park in Arkansas.

“The kids make instant friends when we camp, and camping is just like that when around others you share something in common with,” Ted said. It’s really a unique dynamic where you meet and make friends from all over with people who also enjoy the outdoors, Ted and Amy explained. They have become part of a community both in the parks and in lifestaying connected through social media with their traveling friends.

For Ted, a Tulsa builder, and Amy, a real estate agent, camping is a great escape from their busy professional lives. Although Amy does work while they are driving to their destinations and the boys are allowed their electronic toys during travel, the modern world is put away once they arrive at camp. Once camp is set up, it’s just nature, friendships, and the way the world used to be when outside was still the greatest playground for children and adults alike. Like the Cavallin family, perhaps it’s time we all spend a little more time around a campfire and remind ourselves that peace and unity may be found in a simple walk through the beauty (and the occasional snake’s path) that is nature.

Commercial & Estate Landscapes

The City of Muskogee contracted with JONESPLAN to add an event lawn, a demonstration garden, a formal fountain, and a Butterfly Papilion to their popular Honor Heights Park.

The Butterfly Papilion is the centerpiece of the project, constructed of a double-height timber framed core with a translucent polygal roof and walls. The wings of the enclosure are a greenhouse structure covered in netting, allowing for free and safe movement of butterflies throughout the spaces and around visitors. The park is a beautiful space for interaction with flora and fauna, a peaceful setting for outings, and a great backdrop for special events.

Plenty of Tulsa area restaurants and bars welcome dogs.

THE TULSA GARDEN CENTER PRESENTS: WINE & ROSES "UNDER THE HARVEST MOON"
