We live in an efficiency and productivity-obsessed age. And I admit - I fall into the trap sometimes too. The trap of believing the only things worth doing are those for which I can make an exact calculation of the time, effort and investment it will cost me. The things that result in the highest level of control and least amount of uncertainty. But the truth is - that is really a sad and unfulfilling way to go through life. We must leave some room for exploring, for trying new places and things, for being a beginner, even for getting lost. It is those times that are unstructured and open-ended where the space exists for connections to be made, friendships to be fostered and trust to be built. "Adventures" and “exploration” doesn't even have to be something big and crazy. It can be playing a board game out on the patio, walking a new trail or going out to find a fun cookie place we've never been to before in a different part of town. Our hope is that this issue encourages you to make room for exploration. To prioritize time away from the regular schedule of life. To lose yourself on a trail or in a book. To book that trip you’ve been thinking about, to make time for the things that matter most to you, but often come last on the calendar. If April showers bring May flowers, make time to play in the rain! Here’s your reminder to - and I say this with warmth in my heart - get lost! :) Happy April!

NO PUPPY MILL PROMISE We have heard it. “Where do you get your puppies? Do they come from puppy mills?” It is a cold truth that there are breeders and animal hoarders that place money and greed over the welfare of their animals. We are very proud to report that we do not work with puppy mills. We work with USDAregulated breeders that love their pets and care for them properly. They are better as they are subject to surprise inspections. In addition to the USDA, our breeders are inspected by the state Department of Agriculture, local breeder associations, veterinarians, the American Kennel Club (AKC), Petland, Inc., and our stores. We simply will not condone the mistreatment of animals. We also provide the most recent USDA inspection reports to our customers. As USDA regulated and inspected breeders they are required to have veterinarian care onsite with every animal receiving a health check annually. In fact, there has never been a puppy mill raid on a USDA-inspected and regulated breeder. Even so, we are highly selective and only work with the best.

CANINE CARE CERTIFIED Momentum is building and many of our breeders are now pursuing the Purdue University science-based Canine Care Certified program of which Petland is a sponsor. This breeder program sets forth rigorous, science-based, expert-reviewed standards for canine physical and behavioral welfare in areas such as nutrition, veterinary care, housing, handling and exercise. There are Five Pillars of Care and breeders seeking to be certified must meet or exceed rigorous standards for physical and behavioral welfare in areas such as nutrition, veterinary care, genetics, housing, handling, socialization, enrichment, and exercise. The Canine Care Certified program provides additional measures of assurance that breeders of certified dogs are attending to their dogs’ physical, genetic and behavioral health, and are committed to continuously raising the bar on the care and attention they offer to their dogs. These standards for adult dogs and puppies far exceed current regulatory programs.

Being prepared for an emergency whether it’s a tornado, wildfire or simply a gas leak, taking your pets with you should be a priority. Having a plan with options in place, an emergency kit and a first aid kit can save precious time if having to evacuate and can bring peace of mind if sheltering in place. Have a plan for your pets in case you’re not home when disaster strikes. Put the trusted friend/neighbor on your list of emergency contacts (including the microchip company) in case you’re unavailable. There are numerous suggestions for emergency kits but here are the basics.

1 | Documents Have copies of veterinarian records, vaccination records, rabies certificate, medicines, microchip info, proof of ownership/ adoption records, important contact info, pet/s description and recent photos of you with each pet, all in a waterproof container.

2 | Essential items Keep a two-week supply of food - in a waterproof container if not canned, water and medicine for each pet, collapsible but sturdy dishes, manual can opener and spoon, flea, tick, and heartworm preventative, collar with ID tag, leash, harness and pet carrier.

3 | Additional items If possible the kit can also include familiar toys, a blanket and a bed, a first aid kit, paper towels and cleaning supplies, plastic bags, a litter box with litter, and stakes and tie-outs.

Huntington Learning Center Broken Arrow has provided supplemental education through private tutoring for students from preschool, K-12, and college prep since 2011. Cindy Snodgrass, Center Director, and her business partner, Mike Lingo owned the Tulsa Huntington since 2014. In 2021, they merged the Tulsa and Broken Arrow Centers together. The Importance of Tracing Assets in a Divorce Case Tracing separate property or assets in a divorce can be an important issue for lots of individuals. Take a situation where somebody has a 401k or IRA before marriage. They have put money into this account before marriage. They then get married. After marriage, they continue to contribute to this 401k or IRA. At this point, pre-marital separate funds and marital funds are being mixed. The parties then file for divorce. In these situations, the one spouse is often asking that the entire 401k or IRA be divided in the divorce. The spouse who had funds in these accounts before marriage argues that the pre-marital por-

tion should be set aside to them entirely. And they argue that only the funds put in during the marriage should be divided through the divorce. The reality, however, is that the separate funds need to be traced out from the account. This often requires a forensic accountant reviewing statements and doing an analysis to determine the amount that was in these accounts during the marriage. At a minimum, parties may need to subpoena the statements from the date of the marriage to try to determine the amount that was in there. However, it can often be hard to obtain statements at the exact date of the marriage. In addition to 401ks or IRAs, tracing can be important for other assets like bank

accounts, investment accounts, whole life insurance policies, and other assets where a party might have built up cash value before marriage. In some instances, a party might consider having a prenuptial agreement drafted before getting married. Fun on the Go! The GoBoat portable watercraft combines the best of a paddleboard, kayak, and powered boat It all began when local Tulsans and best friends Clint Donaldson and Dave Yonce decided to make DIY bumper boats for Dave’s kids to play with on their family pond. The boats were fashioned out of wood and inner tubes and provided a summer full of fun and entertainment. Donaldson, a product designer at heart, continued to think of improvements to that early boat design and two years later, he and Yonce introduced the first GoBoat. The GoBoat is a personal watercraft that is inflatable and easily folds down for storage when not in use. The Alvord Desert is simultaneously simple and complex, stormy and calm, untouchable and embracing. It is a dry lakebed 12 miles long by seven miles wide located 260 miles southeast of Bend in the eastern shadow of the Steens Mountains. The desert never called out to me as it does for some. Friends told me that I was “missing out” when I didn’t join them at the Alvord for Burning Man-like weekends in the heat of the summer. It just didn’t seem like a place for me. It took the request of a quiet, introspective, gentle one to accompany him on an adventure to arguably his favorite place on Earth to get me to go. Through those eyes, I fell in love. At the Alvord playa, I found a dome of stars the likes of which I’d never seen. The Milky Way shone full length and breadth with incredible clarity. I found freedom – complete freedom – to walk and dance and sing knowing no one would scare me or judge me or bother me. I found silence. I found that the playa was never the same, yet always what I was looking forward to

at the end of a long drive. I learned to listen for the sound of the lakebed drying – to notice the wide variety of patterns each cycle of damp and parch would create. I learned to pick a reference point on the Steens or Tule Springs Rim when I went for mileslong headphones-on mind-cleansing walks lest I become completely disoriented in the wide open. My guide instilled in me a deep respect for the potential danger inherent in driving miles out into the middle of what is sometimes a shallow lake and most of the time a series of sun baked tiles. You can get impossibly stuck in the fine mud with no hope of a tow for hours and it’s often difficult to tell where solid ends and mud begins. For me these days, the Alvord Desert is a regular several-times-yearly pilgrimage. Sometimes I arrive and the playa is inaccessible due to its current wish to become a lake again. Sometimes I hope for the most glorious night under the stars and there is cloud cover. Sometimes I’m reminded that, even though I can, I ought not drive CONTINUED >

The playa can quickly turn from dry plain to a shallow lake. Plan for extreme changes in weather conditions. If it rains, head for the edges. During wind events, head for sealed cover.

at top speed because of the fragile lives – human and animal – that I may disrupt. I’m always glad I made the trip. If you go, plan your trip around a stop at The Fields Station for gas, groceries, a burger and shake. Visit the Alvord Hot Springs, a spot for a wonderful soak with a killer view. Bring the kids to offer them a lesson in the power of nothingness. Let their senses acclimate to the pace and subtleties. The Steens are nearby for a completely different experience on a day trip. Bring along your common sense, your respect for nature and fellow humans, extra water, extra gas, your plan B, and, most importantly, your sense of wonder.

Colorful Creations TRY SOMETHING NEW WITH TULSA STAINED GLASS ARTICLE BY KACIE BROWN

Tulsa Stained Glass has been creating custom work and performing repairs for almost five decades. But these days, they also give Tulsans a chance to immerse themselves in the colorful world of stained glass with several types of classes. And a class at Tulsa Stained Glass isn’t a typical paint-and-sip experience. It’s an afternoon or evening of entertainment. We spoke with co-founder Richard Bohm to find out more.

3-HOUR STAINED GLASS CLASSES In these three-part classes, students learn about the art itself before building their own “EMOSY,” a term Tulsa Stained Glass coined to describe participants’ expressive creations. Before the class ends, students spend time in the “rage room,” where they throw symbolic dishes against the wall of destruction. “It’s a therapeutic release,” Bohm says. These classes are often themed and have a dinner party-like atmosphere, whether it’s date night, ladies night out, or a private party.

3-DAY BEGINNER CLASSES Before these Friday-Sunday classes, students receive detailed videos. Bohm says it’s a serious class meant to set students up for a fulfilling hobby of making stained glass windows. “They’re made in the tradition of ancient stained glass using the same process as the windows you see in the cathedrals of Europe. The teacher’s said to be the best this side of the Mississippi,” Bohm says, as he tips his hat with a sheepish smile.

GLASS PAINTING CLASSES All ages are welcome at glass painting classes, where participants learn about stained glass design and paint glass discs. Students take home a finished project ready to hang in their windows! The studio also hosts other painting classes like wine glass painting and watercolor basics.
