July - Summer and Adventure Issue Summer is the perfect time to come up with a bucket list of activities to enjoy and ways to unwind and relax. Some of the best summers spent are often not filled with constant activities and trips, but are those that reflect a slower pace and simple moments of enjoying those around us. Although the “lazy days of summer” isn’t always something we can attain with our packed schedules, it is so refreshing to take some time to slow down and enjoy some of the simple pleasures that remind us of our own childhoods. Some of the best times spent can be a backyard barbecue with friends, making s’mores by a fire pit, spending a day on the water, eating ice-cream on a hot summer day, or simply taking in the night sky with someone you love. In this issue, we wanted to share about some of the happenings around our city this summer and ways to get out and explore together. The Events section has lots of ideas to explore. Now Open: i l seme A new place to have dinner in the neighborhood, serving food inspired by regional Italian cuisine

A new Italian restaurant, il seme, just joined Tulsa’s dining scene. We talked to owners Linda Ford and Lisa Becklund to find out more about their latest gourmet venture and the inspiration behind it.

RECONNECTING FOOD AND FARMING Ford and Becklund aren’t industry newcomers; they own two other Tulsa-area restaurants. At Living Kitchen Farm & Dairy, located in Depew, they offer farm table dinners on the screened-in porch of a cabin on the property. These multi-course meals are all created with fresh ingredients from their own farm or others close by. These dinners were so popular that they expanded, opening FarmBar in Downtown Tulsa. Even in the middle of the city, guests at FarmBar enjoy locally-sourced, multi-course tasting menu dinners. A fire next door at BurnCo forced FarmBar to close for repairs in February, though, and left Ford and Becklund without a Tulsa venue for their popular curated dinners. They adapted by hosting weekly pop-up dinners. Price Family Properties had invited them to use the space at 15 W 5th St., formerly occupied by Lassalle’s, and they realized how much potential the area had for something new. “We were delighted to discover that downtown Tulsa is actually a vibrant residential community and felt it was the perfect spot for a great neighborhood dinner place,” Ford says.

DINNER IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD The result – only about two months later – was il seme, a restaurant focused on regional Italian dishes made with fresh, local ingredients. The menu is organized by course as a traditional Italian menu would be and guests are encouraged to share family-style. Ford says they felt it was important that they honor true Italian cuisine. “Lisa has traveled extensively in Italy, particularly in Sicily, and wanted to provide a menu that would reflect the foods of that part of the world, to create a menu that would look like one at a restaurant you walked into in Italy,” Ford says. Examples of the regional Italian-inspired dishes on the menu include fried olives, roasted carrots (when in season), seasonal salads, handmade gnocchi and cavatelli, and tiramisu. Ford also says the wine list includes Italian wines that may be new to many Tulsans. il seme is in the Pythian Building, one of Tulsa’s many 1920s art deco-style buildings, and Ford says they used their décor to retain that style, but also give it the feel of an Italian country home. “We want il seme to be a place that folks in the neighborhood frequent and feel at home coming to often, and a warm, friendly place for visitors to enjoy,” Ford says.

CREATING EXPERIENCES Each of Ford and Becklund’s dining concepts seem to be centered around community, whether guests are seated at a communal table or enjoying a farm-fresh dinner in their own neighborhood. Ford came to the industry later in life after a career in higher education and association management, and quickly became focused on making guests feel comfortable and welcome at their one-of-a-kind dining experiences. Becklund, executive chef for all of their concepts, describes how her early-onset passion for food was confirmed by the feelings her creations incited. “When I was 11 or 12, I went out on my own and got the ingredients to make a pot roast after watching a cooking show on PBS. The response my parents had when they came to dinner got me hooked on cooking. They were thrilled with the food,” Becklund says.

SHAPING TULSA’S LANDSCAPE WITH JONESPLAN

THINK OUTSIDE Among Tulsa’s greatest assets are its outdoor spaces. Parks, golf courses, playgrounds, athletic fields and the exquisite landscaping adorning the city’s many luxurious houses surprise and enthrall visitors. Tulsans are proud of the amenities that have transformed their home turf into one of America’s most livable cities. Literally moving earth to enhance Tulsa is Jonesplan Landscape Construction. Mary Jones, a building architect who serves as a designer and Marketing Manager for the company, says they look for interesting and challenging projects that would benefit from Jonesplan’s multi-faceted capabilities. “We just try to make everything run smoothly,” affirmed Jones, “and to be the people that can be called and depended upon.” Jones is married to Matt Jones, one of Jonesplan’s co-owners. Matt and his brother Justin have substantially grown their business since its inception in 2003. The company has played an active part in two of the most massive projects to break ground in Tulsa — Tulsa Botanic Garden and The Gathering Place.

At Tulsa Botanic Garden, the company was responsible for the construction and landscaping of the first two gardens: The fanciful Children’s Discovery Garden included ponds, bridges, a tree fort and the “Spring Giant.” The A.R. & Marylouise Tandy Floral Terraces incorporated tiered water features and pathways from the top of the hill to the lake 38 feet below. Currently working with Manhattan Construction, Jonesplan is digging into the Garden’s next phase to create the Stanford Family Liberty Garden and the Bumgarner Lotus Pool. “We have had a very close relationship with the Botanic Garden since it started, and with the designers, the owners and the architects,” shared Jonesplan Senior Project Manager Brad Kmita. “It’s been a great ride, so we’re happy to be back out there. There are 22 major gardens planned — 22 in the master plan.” The work at Tulsa’s Gathering Place required Jonesplan to place 17.5 million pounds of stone and gravel — 350 semi loads. Among the projects there that employed Jonesplan expertise were Peggy’s

Pond, Chapman Adventure Playground and the Laredo Petroleum Slide Vale. “Our work is all about relationships, servicing clients’ needs and providing what they want in a professional and creative manner,” offered Russell Huff, a Jonesplan project manager. Huff oversees golf course construction, among other projects. “I kind of went into a career in the golf profession and then wound up on the construction side,” he said. “I already had a lot of relationships built through being in the golf industry, and now to be still associated with it is pretty cool.” With Huff’s guidance, Jonesplan assisted Southern Hills Country Club before and after its last two major tournaments. The company has worked at all of the area’s courses: MeadowBrook, Cedar Ridge, Golf Club of Oklahoma, Page Belcher and LaFortune Park. Golf projects farther afield

include Karsten Creek Golf Course in Stillwater, the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club in Norman, and Heritage Hills in Claremore. The Jonesplan team spent a year at the Gaillardia course in Oklahoma City, constructed The Woods Golf Course in Coweta, and worked at other courses in Northwest Arkansas, New Mexico and Missouri. “Greens, tees, cart paths. It’s very surgical construction,” noted Kmita. “It takes a light footprint to do that kind of work.” In addition, if someone asks “Who you gonna call?” to convert a baseball field into a soccer pitch overnight and then back again to accommodate baseball, “Jonesplan” would be the answer. A quick turnover is crucial when FC Tulsa has a match slated during a Drillers’ home stand. Huff explained that the process involves the removal of the infield diamond by grading it, laying down fabric and covering it with sod. “FC Tulsa plays their game, and then we take it all out and get it ready for the Drillers to have whatever home games are in their schedule.” Jonesplan also has built community spaces like Tower Center at Unity Square in Bartlesville, and excelled in their execution of numerous large-scale residential projects. “We really try to set expectations and communicate out in front of everything, which is hard to do sometimes, but setting expectations from the beginning is very important, so we try to do that,” asserted Kmita.

Another notable endeavor in which Jonesplan participated is John Hope Franklin Reconciliation Park, where they installed all of the landscaping and irrigation needed and worked with Crossland Construction to build Pathway to Hope. A project that the Jonesplan team is finding immensely gratifying is the creation of a series of outdoor classrooms for Tulsa Educare. Both Jones and Kmita have an eye for design and are actively involved in every facet of work. Each classroom design is custom and often includes a bike path, raised garden beds, shade structures, mud kitchens, stages for gathering areas, mud and art areas, and water play. “We just put our architectural or landscape construction knowledge all together and started doing this,” said Jones. “They can make mud pies,” enthused Kmita. “There are teepees so the kids can have a little fort to play in, little bridges and private reading nooks. It’s just a different conception of what a playground can be,” he said. The team has enjoyed Educare work so much, they have created a side company called Good Fieldwork, which focuses almost entirely on the design and construction of outdoor classrooms. “Brad and I are having to learn how to create opportunities for children to grow and develop outside. Kids are so tactile,” remarked Jones. “They want to get dirty. They want to get wet. They fall down. They

scratch up their knees and they keep going. It’s what they call ‘risky play.’ It’s about learning from falling down and learning from getting dirty.” Added Jones, “It feels good to make an impact like that and to know that this little company that we started a long time ago that was pouring driveways is now doing something that’s really interesting — and doing it well. Yeah, I’m very proud.”

Does It Matter How Property is Titled in Divorce? Many individuals wonder whether it matters how property is titled in a divorce. In other words, some theorize that if an asset is in their individual name, it might mean that they will receive this asset in a divorce. It could be a variety of property or assets. Some might try to title a bank account in their own name. Others might purchase a vehicle and put it in their own name. In other cases, an individual might set up an investment account that only has their name on it, but not their spouse. The possibilities can be infinite. When a divorce takes place, many think the asset will be given to them by the court because it is not jointly titled with their spouse. A common question for many is whether this is accurate or not. The reality is that how property is titled in a divorce is normally not that important. Instead, in states where equitable jurisdiction is controlling, courts look to when the property or asset was acquired. If the property is acquired during the marriage, it is normally labeled marital property. However, if the property was acquired before marriage, it is presumed to be separate property. Courts then have to divide marital property in a just matter when consider-

ing all the factors. The factors can vary by state, but they can include different criteria. This includes contribution of each party, the length of the marriage, the education and work history of the parties, the conduct of the parties in some states, and a litany of other factors. In terms of the titling of the assets, it is truly not that important. If the asset is in one spouse’s name, it does not matter if the asset was acquired during the marriage. A party cannot purchase property or buy an asset with marital funds and assume that the asset will be allocated to them in a divorce. A prenuptial agreement is something to consider for those who have substantial property or assets prior to marriage. To ensure they receive it in the divorce, they must agree to it beforehand. Through a prenuptial agreement, the parties can agree to have property or assets set aside to them in the future. It is vital to draft the prenuptial agreement appropriately and that both parties have independent counsel. Other important criteria are that there needs to be full and fair disclosure and that there be no duress or undue influence. Even after the marriage, parties could enter into a postnuptial agreement to denote who would get what property or assets in the case of divorce. That said, parties sometimes have little incentive to do this after the marriage.

One potential exception is where a party receives inheritance or gifts during the marriage. Inheritance or gifts are generally viewed as separate property in a divorce. Thus, if parties place inheritance or gifts in a separate account away from other marital property or debt, doing so makes sense. Otherwise, there can be a risk that the separate property is commingled with other marital funds or property. When this happens, it can convert separate property into marital property. For this reason, parties who receive inheritance or gifts should speak to an attorney if they want to ensure that it remains their separate property. It often makes sense before they receive the inheritance or gift to ensure it is handled appropriately. A separate account in this instance may make sense for liquid assets. Strawberry Jalapeño

MOJITO INGREDIENTS • • • • • •

2 strawberries 2 thinly sliced jalapeños 4 mint leaves 1 ounce simple syrup 2 ounces Caribe Rum Sprite

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Muddle strawberries, jalapeños and mint with the simple syrup. 2. Add Caribe Rum and crushed ice. 3. Shake lightly. 4. Pour into Collins glass and top with Sprite. 5. Garnish with strawberry slices and mint sprig. We did this with basil instead of mint and it was really good too!

The Strawberry Jalapeño Mojito was created by Gracelyn Davenport of Oaks Country Club. The recipe uses Tulsa Hills Wine Cellar’s custom-aged Caribe Rum Single Barrel by Red Fork Distillery.
