Welcome Fall! With the changing seasons comes a change in what we are craving, and with fall that often means comfort food. October is our most delectable issue of the year, filled with some of our favorite dishes available in Tulsa. We had the pleasure of sitting down with four restaurants, and learned what their specialties are—so get your taste buds ready, you are in for a treat. Fall also brings hay rides, pumpkin pie and scary fun so be sure to visit the Castle of Muskogee for the Halloween Festival. If you’re ready to seek a new adventure and try new food, we’ve included a travel trip to Spain complete with all the links you need making it easy to book and preparing you for a great time. Helping others is 12 months a year so we’ve highlighted a few upcoming events for non-profits that you may want to sponsor, attend or learn more about. We all want to help but when we find something we are passionate about, it fills our soul with joy and gives us purpose. There is an art to creating a flavorful dish that not only satisfies our taste buds but evokes memories. The aroma of certain spices and foods can bring us right back to our childhood kitchen table, which can be incredibly powerful and comforting. Food brings us all together, and whether we are sharing a meal with loved ones or enjoying a night out on the town, the time spent while enjoying food is invaluable. October also brings fun things to do in the Tulsa metro. Some of the events include Oklahoma City Thunder v. Dallas Mavericks at the BOK Center, Chili on the Green, the Brush Creek Bazaar, SkinnerFest, Tulsa Oiler’s opening day on October 21st, the Rose District Wedding Show in Broken Arrow, the Tulsa Run and McNellie’s Pub Run. The Importance of Tracing Assets in a Divorce Case Tracing separate property or assets in a divorce can be an important issue for lots of individuals. Take a situation where somebody has a 401k or IRA before marriage. They have put money into this account before marriage. They then get married. After marriage, they continue to contribute to this 401k or IRA. At this point, pre-marital separate funds and marital funds are being mixed. The parties then file for divorce. In these situations, the one spouse is often asking that the entire 401k or IRA be divided in the divorce. The spouse who had funds in these accounts before marriage argues that the pre-marital por-

tion should be set aside to them entirely. And they argue that only the funds put in during the marriage should be divided through the divorce. The reality, however, is that the separate funds need to be traced out from the account. This often requires a forensic accountant reviewing statements and doing an analysis to determine the amount that was in these accounts during the marriage. At a minimum, parties may need to subpoena the statements from the date of the marriage to try to determine the amount that was in there. However, it can often be hard to obtain statements at the exact date of the marriage. In addition to 401ks or IRAs, tracing can be important for other assets like bank

accounts, investment accounts, whole life insurance policies, and other assets where a party might have built up cash value before marriage. Traveling last summer through the La Mancha region of Spain, I spied a column of stark white windmills clinging to a ridge above the town of Consuegra. The vision prompted me to ponder what I knew and understood about Spain. I’d read Cervantes’ Don Quixote and Hemingway’s Death in the Afternoon, marveled at Goya’s penetrating art at the Prado and Picasso’s turbulent Guernica. On a jaunt through as many places as one could comfortably see in two weeks, I searched for what is called duende — the passion and inspiration that shape the country’s identity and the Spanish way of life. Spain is so deeply steeped in history, you can sense its sustained power in the precisely laid and locked stones of every Plaza Mayor. When everyone thought the world was flat, Spanish sailors cruised to the ends of the earth. It was a time when the Spanish Armada and Spanish Inquisition were forces people feared. Spain also was home to enlightened mathematicians, craftsmen, poets and major faiths.

The textures, colors and tastes of Spain are what I savored. The tactile Moorish architecture found in Granada’s Alhambra, Segovia’s massive Roman aqueduct, the flamboyant baroque in Toledo, and the world’s largest Gothic church, located in Seville, overload the senses. Whether dining in metropolitan areas, on the Costa del Sol, or at an unpretentious taverna on a medieval side street, you will enjoy meals that make you drop your fork in elation. On a quest of your own, be sure to sample tapas, sangria, and the vibrant art form of flamenco. Divide Spain’s several regions into separate trips if you can. Always believe you are coming back. For those reflective endof-day moments when your tourist body has absorbed the max, there’s a sip of wine, less expensive than water, that goes perfectly with a view of a late-afternoon amber-glazed courtyard, or sun-gold sand against Columbus’s ocean blue. The Chalkboard Kitchen + Bar – and its bread pudding – has been a Tulsa staple for decades. And this month, the team behind this Ambassador Hotel icon unveils a new take on the restaurant, one that’s nostalgic but forward-thinking, elevated but approachable. The Chalkboard Kitchen + Bar’s menu will still feature its classic dishes like the Beef Wellington and Chicken Ballotine, but it will also showcase new creations from executive chef Daniel Gibb. New menu offerings include a Double Bone-In Pork Chop with poached apples and a mushroom chestnut risotto, a Pan-Seared Halibut with French fingerlings, arugula salad, crispy fried egg, and a mustard cream sauce, and the new Chalkboard Wedge, complete with crispy shallots and a buttermilk blue dressing. Originally from Edinburgh, Scotland, Gibb has been executive chef with The Chalkboard for four years now. And armed with culinary experiences all over the world, he brings an innovative perspective to this Tulsa kitchen. “He’s been a big influence over the past four years, and we wanted to give him an opportunity to put more of his name and his history into what The Chalkboard is,” says The Chalkboard’s general manager Gerald DuBose. Gibb’s horizons may be broad, but he says he’s happy to call Tulsa home, especially as the city continues to evolve. “The food scene is growing so dramatically in Tulsa,” Gibb says. “With these new foods and flavors and profiles, we’re hoping to become a big part of what Tulsa is growing to be.”

The team says through this development, part of their mission is to pay homage to The Chalkboard’s legacy as a cornerstone of Tulsa’s dining landscape. “I really see this as a unique opportunity to not only maintain a Tulsa icon, but also elevate it, and I think that’s a mantra we’re seeing across the board in Tulsa as a whole, too,” assistant general manager Ben Robinson says. Guests will soon see murals by local artists on chalkboards in the restaurant’s new warm, modern dining area. From the renovated space to the fresh new food and beverage menus, this new era of The Chalkboard Kitchen + Bar isn’t just for special occasions. It’s a gathering space that’s inviting and amicable. “We’re not going to do fancy foams or gastriques. There aren’t going to be ingredients you haven’t heard of,” DuBose says. "A visit to The Chalkboard can be a special memory, but you can also join us on the patio or in the restaurant for a casual afternoon drink or meal."

Tulsa Luncheon to Promote Alzheimer’s Awareness The Alzheimer’s Association Oklahoma Chapter will host the 2022 Tulsa AWARE Luncheon on Tuesday, November 8 at 11:30 a.m. at Southern Hills Country Club. AWARE (The Alliance of Women for Alzheimer's Research and Education) is a movement to raise awareness of the effect Alzheimer's disease has on women. Tulsa Co-chairs are Mary Ann Cameron and Bethany Good with Honorary Chair Tina Parkhill. In Oklahoma, more than 67,000 people are living with Alzheimer’s, and 129,000 friends and family serve as their unpaid caregivers. Across the country, over 13 million women are either living with the disease or caring for someone who has the disease. This unbalanced burden forces women to make difficult, yet necessary, decisions that impact our families, our careers, and relationships, As the 6th leading cause of death in the United States and the 3rd leading cause among seniors, Alzheimer's is a disease that selfishly sandwiches generations of loved ones in an endless battle where no one wins. As women, we are unique. Our brains are inventive, smart, powerful and creative. Together, our goal is to raise one united voice with the passion and commitment to make a real change, and that change is to “lead the way to end Alzheimer’s and all other dementia --- by accelerating global research, driving risk reduction and early detection, and maximizing quality care and support”. When we talk about Alzheimer's, we raise awareness, inspire action and change the future. The Halloween Festival at the Castle of Muskogee is held on Fridays and Saturdays, September 30 through October 29, 2022. After the gates open at 5:30 p.m., our street character crew begins the evening dancing to Thriller, Time Warp, Nightmare before Christmas, and more.” The newest event is Jester’s Revenge in the Castle Cave. Becky White, General Manager cautioned, “Gather your wits before entering this haunt with Boardwalk Fun House vibes, a heavy dose of Sinister Clown, and terrors of the jesters who reside in this abandoned fun house.” They’ve added a second train to reduce lines. “The best way to avoid lines is purchasing tickets online at OKCastle.com,” Matt emphasized. “The Adventure Pack and Fright Combo bundles are for guests who plan to visit multiple haunts.” The Adventure Pack is geared toward family fun and includes haunts such as the Haunted Hayride and Castle Train. Azaleas have painted the backdrops of graduations, family reunions, engagements, architecture and stirred the imaginations of children exploring the mazes and trails this shrub often creates over the years. While a member of the Rhododendron family, they are both deciduous and non-deciduous, meaning they often retain their leaves in Tulsa. The Tulsa Area Azalea Society pays homage to the palette of colors initially brought to Woodward Park by the Tulsa Garden Club in 1964, inspiring a love of azaleas throughout northeast Oklahoma. The history of our local azaleas gives our Society a strong foundation as a prime horticultural resource to explore questions, exchange knowledge, and understand the principles, love, and beauty of everything azalea. Oklahoma weather and soil conditions create an incredible research environment from local gardeners to landscape architects to national research institutions. Announced in 2020 and coming to fruition in these next several years, Tulsa Parks will bring azaleas back to their prominence at this 100-year-old Woodward Park. Our Society will play an active role in the planning, planting, progress, and celebration of this investment for generations to come. We only grow by what we nurture and share with others. Please join with us as we acknowledge this beautiful backdrop in our life journeys. The Tulsa Area Azalea Society (TAAS) is a program of the Tulsa Garden Center located at 2435 S.
