FOR MANY OF US, AUGUST IS A SIGNIFICANT TURNING POINT IN THE CALENDAR YEAR. The freedom of summer is drawing to a close and school bells will be ringing very soon. While the relaxed days of sipping cool beverages poolside may be numbered, this month brings a sense of renewal. New routines, new clothes and new school supplies often come to mind in August. And, because we dedicated previous issues to both the male and female Movers and Shakers of our community earlier this year, it would only be right to celebrate some of Tulsa’s outstanding youth this month. It’s also the time of year for social media to light-up with ‘back to school’ photos from adoring moms and dads. If you still have youngsters at home, you may be interested in reading our story about how to style your own family portrait. It is written by a professional photographer and even includes ideas for how to include extended family members - our beloved pets.

FAMILY PORTRAITS. Just the thought of it makes you break into a cold sweat. From figuring out what everyone will wear to getting the family jazzed about picture day. Whether you’re doing the pictures yourself or hiring a pro, it just takes a little planning, creativity and adaptability. The trend right now is to find a grassy field and put your boots on. But if that has no meaning to your family, it will feel forced and you’ll definitely be able to see that

in your pictures. So, our main tip is to not be afraid to incorporate things that you love to do as a family. You’re taking these images to remember your family as it is right now, so have fun with that. Go fishing, bake cookies in your kitchen, have a projector movie night in your jammies, dress up like your favorite superhero, hang out at the bookstore, explore downtown, play with your dogs in the backyard. The point is - the more REAL your family portraits are, the more relaxed they will be, the more you will love them. And if you’re doing something that is fun for your family, everyone will want to be a part of it. SPONTANEOUS FAMILY FUN. Same color but different clothing.

styling tips 1. Don’t all wear the same thing. You’ve all seen that portrait. And if you’re like me, you probably HAVE that portrait. Coordinate your outfits, but don’t match them. 2. Don’t be afraid to wear colors AND patterns. As long as the patterns don’t clash and at least some of your family have on solid colors, go for it! 3. It’s ALL about comfort. If you want kids to scream and parents to stress, dress everyone in something they’re not used to. If your family is all about jeans and Converse, show that off. Be you! 14

Tulsa Lifestyle | August 2019

Pose in front of the skyline.

posing tips 1. Not every image needs to be a properly posed. Along with the well-behaved pictures, capture the candid or action shots. Use prompts to elicit responses, i.e., “Everyone squeeze Mommy as hard as you can!” 2. Act like you like ‘em. Lean onto each other, put hands on arms, snuggle in. If you’re not a touchy-feely family, try other physical interactions like silly dancing with the kiddos. 3. Do something! See who can jump the highest. Arm wrestle. Have a tickle fest. Breaking away from the norm usually makes the best memories and creates the best photographs.

owners noticed that when they arrived at work each morning, there was cash inside the glass front doors where Sir Whines a Lot would hang out at night. They came to realize that late night dinner and bar-customers walking up and down the street would play with the cat through the door taunting him with dollar bills which the kitty would snatch and pull inside. The owners changed his name to CASHnip Kitty and set up a Facebook page with videos of the cat in action. As time went by, CASHnip started to develop a fan base of people from across the world who mailed greeting cards filled with cash and checks. The money, more than $7,000 in the past two years, has been given to support the Tulsa Day Center for the Homeless. Today, CASHnip Kitty’s followers have grown to 22,000 on Facebook and he has his own website, CASHNipKitty.com, where fans can get the latest news on his antics and buy CASHnip Kitty t-shirts and specialty items.

“OUR CLUB DECIDED TO GIVE SCHOLARSHIPS TO COLLEGE-BOUND CHILDREN OF TULSA’S FIRST RESPONDERS WHO GIVE SO MUCH BACK TO US.”

IN 2018, THE MEMBERS OF THE TULSA SOUTHSIDE ROTARY CLUB CREATED THE JOHN BENJAMIN MEMORIAL GOLF TOURNAMENT TO HONOR THEIR FORMER MEMBER’S LEGACY AND HIS DEDICATION TO THE COMMUNITY. John was a very active Rotarian and Tulsan having served as a city councilor and founder of Langenheim Park Murrah Memorial Children's Playground at 47th Street and Harvard, and Benjamin’s Biscuit Acres Dog Park at 5804 East 91st Street South. The event, held at the Golf Club of Oklahoma in September of 2018, was a success raising $16,000 for college scholarships and $4,000 for the playground and dog park. Rotarian Mehdi Kherzri said, “Our club decided to give scholarships to college-bound children of Tulsa’s first responders who give so much back to us.” The scholarships were presented at a special banquet held this past summer and featured speakers including Laura Benjamin, John’s wife; and Brett Brough, Rotary District 6110 assistant governor. Southside Rotarians are making the fundraising golf tournament an annual event and the next one is scheduled for Monday, September 23, 2019, at the Golf Club of Oklahoma. Lessons Learned on International Exchange

FRENCH STUDENT LISE DELAYFUYS EXPERIENCES AMERICA ARTICLE LOUANN BUHLINGER PHOTOGRAPHY JOHN HOWLAND

ANNUALLY, ROTARY INTERNATIONAL SENDS HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS ON EXCHANGE SO THAT THEY MAY EXPERIENCE NEW CULTURES. This year, the Rotary Club of Tulsa hosted Lise Delafuys from Auray, France. She lived with three host families and experienced life as an American teenager attending Bishop Kelley High School where she made the

honor roll and was a cheerleader.

Exchange student Lisa Delafuys with Rotarian Duff Weddle.

I enjoyed so much living in a big city (Tulsa). In France, I live in a very small town of 3,000 people. I have always wanted to live in a city. I love how it is always alive. Lots of places are open 24/7 and people hang out after dinner outside. In Tulsa, there are a variety of things to do. Most of my American friends would disagree with this point but for me it was very new to hangout so much outside of the school. It is simple, in Tulsa you can find everything you need. I would say that Tulsa, as in other American cities, teenagers have a different way of living. The school system is different than in France - the days are shorter, the classes more interesting and easier, the teachers are friendlier. During my exchange year, I mainly learned to be myself. I learned to not fear the person I am deep inside. It caused me to understand that mistakes make us grow up and not drag us down. I feel more mature, self-confident, open-minded and positive. I’ll bring that with me back to France. To apply, visit 6110StudyAbroad.com. 34
