Cozy family fun? Games of horseshoes? For Tom’s Outdoor Living, which provides services that run the gamut from general landscaping to building outdoor structures, getting to know the homeowners’ goals and personalities is a priority to turning ideas into realities. “It’s really an extension of the home,” Hightower explains. “It creates another room or space that you can use yearround. And if you go to sell your home, it’s a ‘wow’ factor.” Projects can cost anywhere from $3,000 for basic landscaping to, well, “the sky’s the limit” when adding outdoor structures and kitchens, he says.

The owners of this midtown Tulsa home wanted a space that linked their house to their swimming pool. They wanted to be able to cook and entertain under cover but also maintain enough openness to ensure natural light still reached into their home, Hightower says. What Tom's Outdoor Living designed is an outdoor kitchen and bar with concrete countertops and a space for a large table – covered by a peaked shelter with copper-framed skylights that let light into the home’s windows. “With the copper flashing it really adds a whole new dynamic to the space,” Hightower said. Copper guttering added additional flare and matched existing accents. Enormous 88-inch wooden fans from LifeStyles, a Tulsa lighting and furniture store, cool the space. The structure also features heaters for year-round living.

POOL PAR T Y It started out as a simple project but quickly grew bigger than expected.

Greg says, “We bought the house and the extra lot next to it with plans to put in a pool and cabana. Unfortunately, issues arose with easements and neighborhood covenants concerning the cabana. The approved building area would have to be long and narrow.” Necessity is the mother of invention, so the couple ditched their plans and started at square one. They worked with an architect to design a unique pool house that opened completely to the outdoors from the side. It took two years of construction, but the Lairds say they couldn’t be more pleased with how it turned out.

The stone bridge leaps over the water to a comfortable seating area around a sophisticated fire pit with azure colored fire glass. The sunken conversation area allows interaction with guests in and out of the water. The immense waterfall has a slide for the couple’s children as well as a hot tub, swim up barstools, and lounge chair platform with a bubbler. “I love it at night. Lighting from all the fire and water elements is very dramatic,” says Greg. The patio is made from seemingly miles of travertine and curves around the backyard’s attractive landscaping to tie everything together.

Industrial finishes like the concrete fireplace hearth and custom steel mantle pair perfectly with the stainless-steel kitchen appliances and Caesarstone counter top. Sleek glossy white cabinets are complimented by designer furniture choices such as iconic Bertoia barstools by Knoll and Grillage chairs by Ligne Roset.

The pool house has retractable glass walls to allow more room to entertain but easily closes to capture cool air in the summer and warm heat in the fall and winter. The pool is heated so we use it year-round along with the hot tub. In the winter, we host Christmas parties and gather around the fireplace or fire pit.”

Together, the Laird’s have created a luxurious private backyard oasis, but Greg credits his wife for having the vision and patience to create such a wonderful family space. “Life is too short. There’s nothing better than enjoying time with family and friends,” he says.

New Zealand and Australia are half a world away, but flights

from the middle of America will land you “Across the Ditch” or “Down Under” in less than 20 hours. With thoughtful planning, you

can track down airfares that are comparable to European flights. And, once you arrive, nothing is lost in translation. Aussies and Kiwis relate to Americans well.

When heading to Australia, travelers often focus first on cosmopol-

itan Sydney where culture, cuisine and shopping are unsurpassed. The city’s opera house and nearby Bondi Beach are popular, although crowded during Australia’s summer.

Traveling north from Sydney, Brisbane, Cairns and the Great Barrier

Reef can take a thrilling week or longer to explore. A more extensive trip could include the UNESCO Heritage Site Fraser Island, located off the eastern shore, and Ayers Rock in the Outback.

A recent second visit for my husband and me took us to artsy

Melbourne, and for a full-day in the emerald-vined Yarra Valley wine

region. Also not far from Melbourne, the surfer beaches, seaside

towns and lush Great Otway National Park along the 152-mile Great Ocean Road are a photographer’s dream. Here, wind-formed rocks named the “Twelve Apostles” hold court, and the Loch Ard Gorge resurrects stories of storm-tossed ships that never made it to shore.

Not to be missed on an Australian sojourn is Tasmania. Its gallery-filled capital, Hobart, and the ghostly, preserved Port Arthur historic site, a former penal colony, are two reasons to seek out this unspoiled island.

New Zealand is “Across the Ditch” (Tasman Sea) from Australia. and features spectacular topography. Its southern island is tipped by Fiordland, a kayaker’s paradise. The drive north to jaunty

The Scottish-bred city Dunedin on New Zealand’s south island is a lively college town with an exquisite 1904 railway station. Akaroa, a cute coastal village, settled by the French, is known for its volcanic terrain, fish and chips and the fanciful mosaics at The Giant’s House. At the bottom of New Zealand’s north island is windy Wellington, a big city with much to explore, including a seal colony. Farther north, the Roturua volcanic thermal area consists of geysers, rainbow-colored pools of bubbling mud and steamy lakes. New Zealand is conscientious about preserving the purity of its lakes and protecting the country from foreign plants and animals. Its six wine regions are surrounded by gorgeous food-producing areas and quaint towns. A gourmet meal with great wine can cap each glorious day. Going Down Under could fill several vacations, but don’t let that stop you from booking that Dallas to Sydney-direct flight. Go for it. You can always return for more.

FROZEN LEMONADE ICE POPS WITH JELL-O WHAT YOU NEED Popsicle molds Popsicle sticks Jell-O (we recommend berry blue and watermelon) 4 cups cold water 1 cup Country Time lemonade drink mix 1 tub (12 ounces) Cool Whip, thawed 1 tablespoon lemon zest

WHAT YOU DO 1. Prepare the Jell-O as directed on the box. Pour into dishes so about 1 inch thick and refrigerate until set. 2. Blend water, lemonade mix, Cool Whip and lemon zest until smooth. 3. When Jell-O is set, remove from dishes and slice into small cubes (theyâ€™ll need to fit in the popsicle molds). 4. Fill the popsicle molds about halfway with Jell-O cubes, then fill the remaining space with the blended lemonade mixture. 5. Add popsicle sticks if needed and freeze overnight.
