Home Is Where the Heart Is THE CONCEPT OF HOME IS DIFFERENT FOR EVERYONE. For some, home is where the family is. It’s the place where weekends were— or still are—filled with baby snuggles, bedtime stories and Saturday morning cartoons. The place where the smell of bacon and pancakes fills the air on Sunday mornings, "do your homework before you go outside" is a daily mantra and unsnoozable slobbery dog kisses take the place of your morning alarm. For others, home is where the rest is. It’s the place where, after a long day, they go to relax. Where they spend meaningful time with their significant other, enjoy home-cooked meals and settle in on a comfy couch to catch up on the week's latest guilty pleasure TV shows.

GIVING BACK

Oysters & Ale A SPECIAL EVENT BENEFITING HOSPICE OF GREEN COUNTRY

ARTICLE JUSTIN LANGSTON

14

Tulsa Lifestyle | March 2018

OYSTERS & ALE IS THE PERFECT BENEFIT FOR TIM RICHARDS, EXECUTIVE CHEF OF DOC’S WINE & FOOD, WHERE OYSTERS ARE THE MOST POPULAR ITEMS ON THE MENU. Richards says they sell 1,000 to 1,500 cooked or raw-on-the-half-shell oysters at Doc’s every week. So, shucking the 3,500 oysters to fill the beds of ice at Oysters & Ale felt like a natural fit. “I loved the look of happiness on the faces of the folks who love oysters on the half shell and have never seen so many in one spot before.” The 7th Annual Oysters & Ale will be held Thursday, April 5, from 5–8 p.m. at the Greenwood Cultural Center located at 322 N Greenwood in Tulsa. Paired with the oysters will be a variety of Oklahoma beers and ales. For those who don’t like beer or oysters, there will be other food and wine options offered by partner restaurants. Hospice of Green Country has been serving the communities of northeastern Oklahoma for 30 years. HGC is proud to be the only United Way supported, multi-cultural, multi-faith, nonprofit hospice in the area. Hospice of Green Country is proud to be the leading provider of hospice care for those without financial resources. Its guiding vision is that ALL patients should die with dignity, in peace and comfort.

Making Beautiful Art Through Dentistry HOW DR. COBBLE'S ARTISTRY WITH INVISALIGN TRANSFORMS

16

Tulsa Lifestyle | March 2018

IF DENTISTRY IS AN ART FORM, THEN DR. JAN COBBLE AT MASTERPIECE SMILES IS A CRAFTSMAN. Nearing forty-five years of practicing dentistry in Tulsa, he has not only transformed patient's smiles, but made many friends along the way. “I don't work on strangers; I work on friends.” A significant aspect of his artistry is establishing great relationships with patients. “People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care. And that’s why I spend so much time upfront getting to know the patient before I put them in the chair.” Assuring new patients they’re in a safe environment is top priority since many have dental phobia. He informs them of their options, steps in treatment, and his goal to make procedures as pain free as possible. Once they’re comfortable, he can go to work, transforming crooked, crowded or corroded teeth into works of art. But it’s not just their teeth that’s transformed, but themselves as well. “I create positive changes in their mouths that blossom into many positive changes both inward and outward. This contributes to their health and self esteem.” A great tool to beautify smiles and promote oral health is Invisalign. “When your teeth are no longer crowded, overlapped or rotated, it’s

Angela's paintings were displayed for a pop up show in Carolyn's retro dining room. Tulsa Lifestyle | March 2018

Carolyn and Angela share a special moment while discussing samples.

IMAGINE WALKING INTO YOUR HOME, AFTER MEETING DEADLINES, FIGHTING TRAFFIC, AND HAULING KIDS TO THE FIFTH PRACTICE THAT WEEK, YOU FEEL SERENE, INSPIRED AND EVEN CREATIVE?

ing business was launched! Twenty-four years later, Carolyn Finch and Co. has grown into a dedicated team of artists. Teresa Jirik has been by Finch’s side as the lead artist almost the entire time, adding her creative ideas into the mix. And Finch also partners with her daughter Angela Finch.

As a designer, Finch creates her own stencils, tools and techniques, including the “broken glass” beading. She adds beads in segments instead of on the entire wall. In her bedroom, she added mica powder to create a multi-dimensional shimmer that’s subdued. Look closely at the main wall,

HOME INTO ART

(CON TI N U ED)

Her STYLE HER STYLE:

As a colorist, she focuses on saturating color through the house for

flow, texture and mood. ”I love to saturate and marry colors so you’re repeating it over and over, and not throwing in a fifth or sixth color.” The gleaming white open kitchen flows seamlessly into the corner nook framed by three paneled abstracts her daughter painted with lime green, aqua blue and dandelion yellows. These colors cohesively flow into the connected living room and the dining room that's joined by a narrow hallway. Sitting on a pub chair in the kitchen, you can see how the colors in the dining room create a visual delight. Pops of colors come from the vibrant chartreuse drapes with lime green circles, the lime green upholstered chairs, and the turquoise chandelier above the dining room table.

Her PASSION HER PASSION:

Painting a home is more physically grueling than working on a

canvas. So what drives Finch to master her craft despite long hours on her feet, sometimes on ladders and scaffolding? It’s two-fold:

Carolyn and her blown glass niche.

One is Aesthetics: “I love creating a beautiful atmosphere in people’s homes which is their place of serenity.” The second is Relational: “I meet the most amazing people —most become my friends— who help me with my passion and see my passion in me.”

Her innovation HER INNOVATION:

Staying current on the latest design trends and partnering with

local interior designers, Finch consults with clients on how to create a unique, modern look to inspire and impress. Recently, she’s ventured beyond walls and ceilings. Collaborating with a silk screen artist, Finch and her team added glass and silver leafing to Christmas artwork, capturing the holiday’s romance and beauty. Sax Fifth Avenue, The Market at Walnut Creek and other local boutiques carried this collection (and it nearly sold out).

Carolyn's stenciled "art" in her husband's home office.

Carolyn painted this starry look on her entry ceiling.

HER DAUGHTER:

Working with her mother since twelve years old, Angela

went on to study art and costume design from the University of Tulsa. After graduating, she focused on painting. While the house serves as Finch’s canvas, Angela works on a linen canvas. She paints custom art, creating whatever the client wants. Thus, her collection is diverse including abstracts, pop art, portraits and even pets. “What’s inspiring about the kind of art I do is being able to enter a client’s vision to create something truly personal. Although this is often a huge challenge, it allows me to grow and learn everyday. From painting textured, glassencrusted abstracts, to pop art portraits, and bright, striking scenes, every project is unique and exciting! It’s rewarding to take what’s in my client’s heart and transform it into an art piece that speaks to them. It keeps me on my toes and constantly helps me to think beyond my own box.“ The beauty of Angela’s business? She can work out of her home, convenient for this married mother of two. (Considering the close bond this mother-daughter duo have, it’s not surprising they live less than a mile away.) “Working in the home with two small children can be hectic, to say the least! I am so thankful to be able to raise them in a wildly creative environment, like the one I was raised in. I was always taught to see the beauty and adventure in everything, and I hope to pass that down to my children as well.” For this mother-daughter duo, they’re passionate about making your home beautiful, serene and personalized like a piece of art.

Artist's Palette HOW TWO ARTISTS DISCOVERED THE ART WITHIN FOR JOE SMITH AND CLAUDIA ALTSHULER, IT WASN’T JUST AN IMAGE THEY LIBERATED, BUT THE ARTIST WITHIN. They discovered their artistic gift in the second chapter of their lives, revealing it’s never too late to carve a new path. And their art is an inspiring expression of this journey.

“I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free.” Michelangelo JOE SMITH: SHEDDING THE SUIT AND TIE FOR A BLACKSMITH’S APRON After retiring as an accountant, Joe Smith, consulted with faith-based life coach, David Jewitt and his Your One Degree program to discover his next pursuit. Eight months later, he freed the artist within. “The Lord was directing me,” Smith shares. Now, he’s created a niche business making ironwork art and furniture. Although

predominately

self

taught,

he now seeks short-term "apprenticeships" from master blacksmiths. He’s passionate about honing his craft. Perhaps this pursuit for precision reflects a trait that first led him to accounting. But now, he’s marrying exacting standards with subjective artistry to create art with high-quality craftsmanship and innovation. (He has been featured in national media arts publications.) “You grow in your craft. I’ve mastered different techniques and created things that two years ago, I wouldn’t have tried.” HIS COLLECTION: He makes customized furniture from handcrafted coffee tables with grapes and grapevine motifs, executive office desks made from refurbished cargo wood, fireplace screens with cattail designs, to smaller decor items from vases with metal roses and hummingbirds, advent wreaths and candelabras (popular Christmas gifts), and campsite tools. STRIKE WHILE IT’S HOT! His studio is a workshop on his property. Here, he uses a gas forge he made himself and a coal forge that heats up to 2000 degrees for larger pieces of steel. Orange heat, dangerous sparks and sharp banging are common, but these harsh elements allow him to work with his hands and tap into the creativity within. And in this second chapter of his life, he wouldn’t have it any other way. FIND SMITH’S WORK: The Market at Walnut Creek and RiverCity Trading Post. We hadn’t heard much about Episcopal education.

We’re a Christian family. Living in a city full of good faith-based schools. Comfortable with our beliefs. We were looking for a school that honored our convictions, a community that celebrates difference, AND an atmosphere of inquiry where our kids witness many traditions.

Holland Hall spoke to us— as the one school in Tulsa offering all they need for ALL they’re becoming.

The possibilities of and. The assurance of all.

PARTING THOUGHTS

Chocolate Hop at the Candy Shop

THINGS REALLY GET HOPPIN’ THIS TIME OF YEAR AT THE ROCKY MOUNTAIN CHOCOLATE

FACTORY

IN

TULSA.

It’s when bunnies abound. They’ve got Easter bunnies in milk chocolate, dark chocolate and white. Solid and hollow. Bunnies with old-fashioned packs on their backs, or others with modern cartoon faces. They come wrapped in pastel foils. In a bag. In a basket. On a stick. You can even get a custom Easter bunny made from a caramel apple, with marshmallow ears dipped in white chocolate. “He’s even got little whiskers,” says Ryan McAdams, who owns the chocolate shop, along with Tulsa Toy Depot at 101st and Sheridan Road. “We kind of have something for everybody depending on what kind of bunny they would like to get.” And that’s just getting started on the Easter candy trail. How about chocolate eggs? You can choose from an array of cream fillings. Or seasonal toffees? This time of year, they come in fresh springtime flavors like lemon bar and key lime, McAdams says. According to the National Confectioners Association, some 89 percent of Americans include candy or chocolate in their children’s Easter baskets. And 79 percent of Americans include non-edible items like stuffed animals, crayons or books. Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory and the Tulsa Toy Depot make it easy for parents to fill those baskets. In one stop, they can buy candy from one store and toys from the other.

Craft Classes are free every Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. and Storytime is held on Thursdays at 11 a.m. Miss Carol Meyer leads the kids in music and story telling for 30 minutes of great active fun.

“Then we’ll put that in an Easter basket, put some grass in, cellophane it all up and put a bow on top. It just takes a few minutes to do it,” McAdams says. “And it’s free.” On March 31, the Saturday before Easter Sunday, the toy store also will offer a free activity in which kids can paint a wooden egg to take home, he says. The shops are located at 10114 S. Sheridan Road and are open Monday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Tuesday-Saturday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Sunday 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.
