It probably seemed like too much, too soon.
I researched schools before my son was born. Toured here when he was three months old. Knew from his first day of preschool that he would graduate from this school. I understood that his preschool years determined how well he’ll learn later, so the time is now for early childhood specialists, a carefully designed curriculum, and solid academic foundations.
Holland Hall gets it right from the start— as the one school in Tulsa o≠ering all he needs for all he’s becoming.

Treatment The treatment involves injecting the filler into targeted folds, lines and wrinkles. This process can be used in a variety of places. Including cheeks, mid face lines, smoker wrinkles around the mouth and the lips. Treatment takes between 30-45 minutes, depending on how many areas are treated and the amount volume loss. As an added comfort bonus, in my office I can numb the lips, and make the experience pain free. Unlike Botox, fillers can be reversed if needed but are somewhat more apt to slightly bruise and swell in the areas injected. When the fillers start to diminish, you will need to ‘top off’ the area to maintain the youthful volume achieved at the initial appointment.

• FINALE
Saturday night, September 30th, Runway Tulsa remains in the Assembly Hall for the 2017 Runway Tulsa Finale. The show, one of region’s best, features four designers from across the United States alongside two of Oklahoma’s finest. “Our intent with the Finale each year is to bring four outstanding designers to Tulsa and always mix in two of our best Oklahoma designers,” says Terry. “We believe this year’s lineup continues the excellent momentum of last year’s show.” The OFI team delights in the fact that when showing photos from last year’s Finale viewers are never able to identify the local designs. This year’s lineup includes: a Project Runway Season Winner from Portland, a Nigerian-born, Canadian transplant, a Miami-based art student turned designer, a self-taught designer recently voted Denver’s Best Fashion Designer, a Tulsa fashion icon, and a young local designer honing his skills at one of the country’s top fashion schools.

The Designers • MICHELLE LESNIAK
Native Portlandian and thrift store junkie, Michelle Lesniak hasn’t followed the traditional path down fashion lane. Born into a family of quilters, seamstresses, and interior decorators, needle and thread were predestined to find their way into her hands. From a young age, Michelle took her minimal clothing allowance and hit thrift and vintage stores, where she purchased wacky pieces that she altered to fit her taste. By remaking previously worn garments, she learned construction, destruction, and how to tailor garments. Michelle continued to fill her closet with her own creations while attending the School of the Art Institute of Chicago where she studied the art of printmaking. Lithography, silk-screening, etching, and woodblock printing eventually found their way onto fabric and the Michelle Lesniak textile was born. Using these textiles, she constructed artist gowns and sculptures. Determined to jumpstart her career in fashion, Michelle tried out for Project Runway, landing a spot on Season 11. Her lack of formal training gave her an edge; there were no rules to follow. As a self-proclaimed, professional rule breaker, Michelle won the season and the ability to design full-time. • ESÉ AZÉNABOR
Esé Azénabor’s designs are inspired by the arts and her culture. They are daring, luxurious, extravagant, and shows her artistic side through her beading and attention to detail. The Nigerian-born, Canadian transplant got to Texas as fast as she could, although her arrival on the fashion scene required a few additional detours. Hailing from a family who considered fashion design more of a hobby than a career, Esé swept her creative urges under the rug. The Azénabor name was grounded in the fields of medicine, law, and engineering, and she, in turn, attended the University of Windsor in Canada, majoring in accounting; and later pursued a Master’s Degree at Southern Methodist University, during which time she started designing dresses for herself, friends and family. In 2012 Azénabor launched her self-titled ready-to-wear line. Sitting at her sewing machine, she conceptualized her fascination for heavy hand-beading, crocheted lace, exquisite fabrics and embroidery. Inspired by a combination of vintage African, Egyptian, and contemporary European influences, she merged these influences to create the debut of Esé Azénabor has now debuted five collections including her Fall/ Winter 2015 collection inspired by Henry, her Spring/Summer 2016 Garden of Eden Collection during New York’s Fashion Week and has proven to be a creative force and an innovative designer to watch. • LISU VEGA
Lisu Vega, began her design career fully immersed in the visual art world. As an art student, she explored several art languages, including graphic art, which helped her later to develop her own visual patterns as part of her holistic process of investigation and exploration of concepts and ideas for each project. Among her runway appearances, Vega has showcased her collections at Miami International Fashion Week, New York Fashion Week 2014 – 2016 in NYC, Dominican Republic Fashion Week, Kansas City Fashion Week, Salon LEXUS and The Collection Moda-Jamaica.

• RAUL FLORES
“Raul Flores is the prototype Oklahoma Fashion Initiative story,” says OFI’s Associate Director Wade Bray. “Timing is everything, and Raul – while on the leading edge of our program – has everything it takes to be our first real success story!” Flores, who grew up in Tulsa took his considerable talents to FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology) in New York City last year and hopes to return after the Runway Tulsa Finale. Through their scholarship program OFI hopes to contribute to Flores’ continued development at FIT and believes he has the talent to be the first recipient of their Launch Grant – an annual grant designed to provide financial, marketing, manufacturing and distribution assistance to a designer launching their brand to the world. Finale. Photography: Rip Stell
Giving Back In addition to the afore mentioned grant, OFI’s Educational Program utilizes scholarships, mentorships and an intern program to develop designers, merchandisers, and other fashion-related professionals. The scholarship program includes an in-state scholarship program, and an advanced scholarship to send students to elite programs like Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York City, and Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM) in Los Angeles.
Looking Forward Phase 3 of Oklahoma Fashion Initiative’s effort is centered around the creation of a small batch manufacturing facility in Tulsa. Small batch manufacturing caters to designers that require lower quantities of their apparel than can be feasibly produced at standard manufacturing facilities. This facility will be constructed to provide apparel in quantities from 6 to 2,000 pieces per unit at prices affordable to developing designers. OFI is currently working with charitable foundations, state and local entities and interested individuals to fund their programs. he Tom’s Design team met with the Hurst family right before the Home and Garden Show this last March
to discuss their need for a pool house in their back yard. The property already had a nice outdoor kitchen area and a nice large pool. The only thing missing was a pool house where guests could come and relax and enjoy the shade after a mid-day swim. So the Tom’s team of designers and architects got together with the homeowner to discuss the project and to start laying out the design. The initial area suggested for the pool house would be naturally near the pool. This area currently had a nice planting bed with mature crape myrtles and roses that would need to be taken out before the project could get started. It seemed at first like a waste to take out all the mature plant material, but in the end the overall results were worth losing a few crape myrtles and roses for this project. As the drawings came together the project became very detail oriented. This project unlike most projects was more like building a small house. The footprint for this pool house ended up being 500 square feet in total; it

included a pool house bathroom and a pool storage room on the back. The bathroom would be equipped with a small toilet and vanity area to help keep wet feet out of the homeowner’s residence. The bathroom would also include a floor drain for easy cleaning, can lighting, a vent fan on a timer switch, and a heat and air system would even be included in the pool house bathroom. Adjacent to the pool house bathroom the architect drew in a nice storage room that would help hold all the pool toys, towels and chemicals and it would also hold the control system for the audio/video unit that was installed for the homeowner. The overall structure would include a 22’ tall custom designed chimney that would also include a copper chimney cap and a custom floating mantle built by the team at Toms Outdoor Living to hold the television. t wasn’t long ago that the Thornton YMCA in Tulsa, Oklahoma wasn’t much to look at. Built in 1968, adjacent to
a large county park located in the heart of residential Tulsa, the Thornton YMCA was once a thriving family fitness center. However, the many years of use and the changing nature of both fitness and family recreation over the last half century left many looking for more modern options. Today, the tides have turned in every way, and the new Tandy Family YMCA feels like an experience once again. “The Y was in an ideal location; it just lacked appeal and functionality,” said Jeremy Carlisle, an Associate Principal and landscape architect with GH2 Architects, the architecture and design firm responsible for the facility’s transformation. Taking on a new name in honor of the primary donor, the Tandy Family YMCA’s $21 million improvement program included the renovation of the existing facility and a new 60,000-square-foot addition. Basketball courts, fitness studios, child care and family learning environments were modernized in the renovated spaces, while the newly constructed addition features a three-pool indoor aquatic center, combining a family pool, a lap pool, and a therapy pool. There is also 4,000 square feet of space dedicated to a new partnership between the Y and the University of Oklahoma Physicians Sports Medicine and OU Physical

Designed to entertain children of all ages, the entirely redeveloped facility applies Universal Design strategies to effectively engage toddlers, seniors, and everyone in between. The entry feature also needed to be a beautiful, year-round work of art, highly activated in the summer and durable enough to withstand constant use and weather. As a wet play surface, the hardscape materials needed to account for a coefficient of friction that makes them safe

for energetic play on a hot summer day. “The concept behind the overall design was developed without knowing exactly what the finish materials would be,” said Carlisle. The complexity of executing the design vision began with the details of incorporating two distinct concrete treatments, which had to be poured above the network of lines and drainage channels required to support the water features. The concrete scope also involved multiple grades of work, permeable and impermeable surfaces, and a variety of adjacencies to natural stone walls and the exterior walls of the new building addition. Bomanite has been at the forefront of innovation in concrete flatwork since the mid-1950s. Carlisle had previous experience working with Bomanite of Tulsa and appreciates owner Charles Foster’s hands-on nature and attention to detail in developing the work. “There were really a lot of different requirements in choosing the right materials for the splash garden and Bomanite met them all,” Carlisle said. He added that it feels good to be able to turn over the entire scope of work for architec-

tural concrete to a single contractor and know it will be done right. Charles Foster, owner of Bomanite of Tulsa, an independent Licensed Contractor within a network of Bomanite installers across the country, and his team worked with GH2 and the Y’s leadership during design to propose products, colors, and finishes that would work well with the architecture and interiors. “The Tandy Family YMCA was a wonderful project, exactly the kind of complex, detailed work we like to do,” Foster said. Presenting tile size samples of the chosen materials is an important step that ensures owners and designers understand what they are going to get and sets a high bar for workmanship and finishes. Ultimately, a total of 3,800 square feet of Bomanite Exposed Aggregate was installed and finished in a combination of Bomanite Revealed (Custom Blue Glass) and Sandscape Texture (Gobi Desert Integral Color) techniques. During construction, the biggest challenge for Bomanite of Tulsa was putting in the intricate architectural concrete while other subcontractors worked in close proximity, installing drainage, water lines, and masonry. Foster credits construction manager, Flintco, for coordinating a precise construction sequence and managing multiple subcontractor overlaps so there were no surprises in the field. Carlisle and the others at GH2 and the Y are thrilled with the finished product – a beautifully updated fitness and wellness center for the whole community. “This project called for high-impact, aesthetically pleasing, and long-lasting architectural concrete,” Carlisle said. “Perhaps just as importantly, we needed it to be installed by a team with the

How it all began...
Last year my husband, one of the founders of our company, wrote a “napkin note” in our son’s lunch box. Holden doesn’t get notes every day, because quite frankly I forget. But sometimes he gets lucky. That day his dad decided to take over, and hit it out of the park with this note. So much so that it is framed in our living room. Laura Leffler, originally from Tulsa, helps her friend Kristi by modeling some of the apparel for Be Strong Story. Laura told us about the site and the story behind it. If you have a favorite site that has Oklahoma connections, let us know so we might share it with our readers!
It became our family motto. We posted it on Facebook and people LOVED the message. So we thought why not make this a message that people can wear. Something that will remind them to live this message OUT LOUD. We made a few shirts, and the rest is history. To see people living this out as they wear the BE STRONG STORY apparel has been the most encouraging and inspiring thing to see. We want our lives, business, hobbies, and our relationships to reflect this message. And we hope you will join us on our mission to teach our generation and the next to...
